So, after Dan's shoutout to Bertie Gilbert's video "Let It Be", I thought I'd check it out. I liked it! It's very arty, and it tells an interesting story with a tight plot and layers of complexity. The acting is pretty good too.

I'm not sure how to check whether there has been a bump in views since the BONCAs (the video has been up for eight months and has about 442k views total), but recent comments show at most one phandom member. Which I find telling, since we all know that the phandom can just flood a video/channel, and clearly that didn't happen here. I wonder if Dan thought his shoutout would encourage his fanbase to check out Bertie, or if he was just expressing his own appreciation.

I actually don't know much of Bertie's work, though Bertie is responsible for one of my favorite videos featuring Dan ("A Chat with Dan Howell"). He captured peak pretty-boy Dan <3  <3 in a sketch that I found very funny (even when the topics strayed into the problematic).

Yup, Bertie is a brilliant director.
I'm going to be a love/hater though because I find that he grates on my nerves, I find him overly pretentious and I think he makes a better director than actor. I may be mean in saying, but I think Let it Be would have been a long better if it was just Dodie and Savannah Brown acting together because Bertie acts like stale cereal and it's infuriating. He just cant fucking act. I'm also a little pissed he decided to delete all his old videos to focus on keeping his channel aesthetic as a film director...kind of adds to his pretentiousness tbh

However, his directing is fucking superb, especially for his age, I agree with Dan, I see him going on to direct more and more films and win more awards outside of YouTube. I just hope he doesn't star in any them, he needs to focus his energy in being behind the camera

Films like "Blue Sushi" have great ideas and great scenes but when they end you're like, "Is that it? That makes no sense!" And tbh all films pre-dating Tick where it Hurts I can't watch, they're just Bertie moping around on screen and the entire thing's a crock of shit. (I notice there's a correlation that all good films he's made doesn't have Bertie on screen that much??)

Sorry for my bitching, I'm just very opinionated by my hatred yet fascination for Bertie,I kind of want to see his demise but also want to see him succeed and was rooting for him for the BONCAS award, albeit deppy won, I am delighted Dan gave him a rightful shoutout

If you want to watch some more of his films, I find some of them train wrecks, others are some of my absolute favorites on YouTube. I love:
Let it Be (I find both Bertie and Savannah a bit dry but Dodie steals the show tbh)
Rocks that Bleed (This is one of the best short films I've seen wtf and it has Bertie and Jack Howard acting together....there's no correlation for me empathizing with their characters and yet I do. Watch this, the ending will screw you over!)
Tick where it Hurts (warning, you will feel like shit and want to cry)

Thanks for the recs! :2thumbsup: I agree that he's better behind the camera than in front of it--he's a bit annoying. It's nice to see a YouTube channel with such polished videos. (I wonder if his role in Harry Potter was enough to fund his artistic endeavors.) I'll definitely be keeping my eye on him.

after Dan's shoutout I too checked Let it be but i didn't leave a comment and certainly not a "here because of Dan!!!!!1!1!" so the phandom didn't flood the video but I would say it probably had an influence??
I found Let it be had good ideas, touched themes that interest me and with an interesting artistic vision. I can't say I really enjoyed it though, i think it was just ok.
I agree that I think Bertie is a bad actor but I also think Dodie is not very good either.

The most surprising for me was that it ran in the same category as TATINOF and the story of TATINOF. I don't think it was fair to any of those projects because they really don't belong in the same category for me, they have nothing in common.

He started vlogging again!, who knows how long this will last, but I'm throughly enjoying his sense of humor and quality cinematography.

Also can't wait for his new film with Chris!

He's making another film with Christ I'm kind of hoping Bertie is only directing though, and not co-starring

has anyone watch playground yet??
i'm having some conflicting opinions on it (as i do with all his stuff...) i love the idea/meaning/themes behind playground and the character development was amazing, but i always feel that bertie's style is too "whimsical" which makes it harder for me to understand and connect with. while most of the acting was great, i feel like the relationships are slightly underdeveloped (especially with chris and the sister's characters)
anyone else have similar feelings?

I have and I absolutely love the "whimsical" style. I'm a sucker for stuff like that, maybe because it seems original or I am a weirdo and feel home  It was kind of predictable that someone died, but I thought it was their child at first. I do think they could have focused a little more on the relationship between the protagonist and his sister, but it wasn't too important for the short film, I think. The ending really got me :(
