Wasn't totally sure whether this should go in D&P or Off-topic, cause it is Youtube related but anyway..

What have your experiences been going to events like VidCon, Playlist, SITC etc?
I can go to SITC this year and it's pretty cheap but idk if I'd enjoy it, especially as I don't think anyone I know irl would be willing to go with me.. I went to Buffer Fest in Toronto for a screening a few months ago which was great but that's a lot more laid back than SITC I think..
Also I'd probably feel really old at SITC at 21?

I'd be interested to hear experiences as well, especially at Vidcon because I'm going this year and they've organized it a bit differently

Haven't been to vidcon, but I've had many friends go so I sort of live through their experiences. Besides the lottery won meet-and-greets, you spend most the time perusing the merch room/running into smaller youtubers who aren't famous enough to not be able to walk around and chat with them. Also panels, but those are crowded and loud AF from what I know.

I'd also love to hear if anyone has any experiences to share! I'm very strongly considering doing SITC this year but am still undecided. I almost feel like I should after so many years of being so annoyed at having to miss it, but equally am already so busy/spending so much money this summer that I'm not sure I can justify it. Hoping D&P might do another TATINOF show at SITC and make my decision for me!

Hmm. That doesn't sound fun tbh... Do you know how one gets into panels? Do people wait outside for like hours?

That's pretty much how I feel, if they did another TATINOF show at SITC/in the London area I'd definitely try and go, they're announcing the lineup in the next few days I think so that might make my mind up for me.. IDB meet-up at SITC anyone? :) None of my friends are youtube obsessed and it makes me sad

I want to go to SITC this year but I am going to Florida only 3 weeks after so I don't know if I should save the £40 for that!! Never been to a YouTube convention before. I agree with waiting until they have accouned the line up.

Me and my sister are hoping they do a European tour so we can get a cheap easy jet flight/Eurostar mahjong to the shows!! Or just a London Show would be great haha

Same here on European shows, I'd probably try and go to Paris or Amsterdam if that was an option! Once the SITC lineup is fully announced I'll look into it more but I reckon it would be worth £40 for the weekend ticket if the lineup is good :)

I went to SITC last year and have a ticket for this year. Honestly, it's a bit much. As in, it's held in a conventional hall and there's one big room and their places for you to sit and be comfy are in the middle of the room and there is literally NO unwinding area at all. I spent a lot of time in the hall outside because I dislike crowds a bit and it was really noisy or in the loo when I wasn't busy doing something else lol.

However, they had gender neutral bathrooms which was really good to see.

The panels were kind of poorly organised, apparently nobody told the security that these guys have fans so they were surprised to see people queueing in advance of some of the panels; any with Deppy in them had people queueing for hours and the security teams had absolutely no idea how to control crowds or how to accommodate them. Miraculously, I got into all the panels I wanted to including the one with Dan and Phil but many weren't so lucky.

The M&G's were actually really well done and well organised, the only downfall was they are held in the same conventional hall as the music stage so during my M&G with Laci Green, she was struggling to hear what anybody was saying and we were having to shout at people over loud music which sucked.

Overall, would go again but would definitely take food from home (the choices of food are pretty poor, or great if you want unhealthy fast food junk) and would definitely take more breaks from the intense atmosphere of the main room.

I also just want to say that I met Tomska there and he is such a lovely guy. He was tireless with how much time he spent at his stall, standing infront of it to meet people and chatting at length to people about all sorts of things. He must have been exhausted and when I spoke to him, he was going to be late for a panel and I told him to go because he'd be late and he still insisted on talking to me for a few minutes and taking a picture. He was a star.

human thanks for the info! I was gonna quote but it made the post huge, but that's given me more of an idea of what to expect so thanks a lot
I think M&Gs and stuff are being organized by a ballot now, not sure about panels though, but that may make things less chaotic?
Strongly considering going now if I can coerce a friend into joining me :D or decide to brave it alone idk

Yeah, the ballots were pretty good tbh. I wondered if Dan had a hand in that because he whined about it a few times in liveshows and the way it works now is pretty much what his idea was but I did like how it worked. The M&G was way less chaotic than the panels hahah.

Maybe they should do a ballot for the panels too? Should be possible in theory I think, from what I've heard SITC has grown ridiculously quickly so I guess they're only just figuring out how the hell to make it all work..

Thanks so much for the info human, it's great to have a better idea of how it all operates! Hopefully they'll learn from some of those mistakes for next year, it's still very much a growing event, like bluebox-away said.

I went to SITC for the first time last year and the panels were the best part, though the queue for the one Dan and Phil were in was awful. They cut it off before it was full because of so much pushing so there were possibly another 200 people hanging around next to the queue and eventually they let in as many as they could (I think almost everyone got in), but only because the panellists asked. The security and SITC staff were adamant no one else was going in. They said they'd been asking people to leave the queue and come back as they were there way too early, but people in the queue didn't listen.

That was such a stress, but it was great to see them live. I found the other panels more fun and saw three or four, first Charlie and Jimmy's Cereal Time, women gamers and comedy with Weebl, Tomska and Jack & Dean. I got Catrific in the meet and greet, and she was lovely. The stalls were okay, I wasn't overly bothered by much of what they were selling, though I did go to D&P's right at the end of the day once the queue had died down (it must have had nearly 100 people all day, I was stunned by the phandom presence, the panel room seated about 1000 so D&P fans made up 10% of the whole thing). Echo that TomSka is lovely. I met him at the VidFest section of MCM Expo in May.

I'd be up for meeting up with people if they want someone to go with this year.

Ooh thanks for that! I don't know if I'd even want to do a M&G because of the awkwardness of it all but I'd be really interested in seeing some panels!
Definitely would be down to meet IDBers to go together if I get a ticket :D

My one friend who goes to vidcon never goes to panels, honestly. She stopped into one of Dan's last year, and the room was like a completely filled out concert hall. She took a crappy pic of the screen he was projected onto (for my sake) and left

The other nice stuff the events have are like youtube concerts and a little guest prom like thing?

Lol if it's at the Excel again (not sure since some other company bought the convention, which is good because the poor guy who used to run it looked like he wanted to die for the months a year he had to organise it and it was far too much work for just him, I'm happy for him that it's taken off and I hope he was paid well for it tbh) there was a bar upstairs where all the parents went. But there was nothing anywhere else ahahaha.

A lot of the time I was on GG posting when I was there I was sitting on the loo or in the diner area with a Starbucks, wishing it had vodka in it.

Hmm.... interesante, gracias. What about the big events, on the big stage? If anyone knows, I'm super curious as to how someone gets into those without being absolutely trampled.
