I hope more people are wising up to him now that he's done this (as Katka said, it's sad that it had to come to this, but at least it's happening). That apology video though is more damage control than it is a real apology. He shouldn't have said it to begin with, and why didn't he use his MASSIVE PLATFORM to talk about why this shit isn't acceptable and that you shouldn't defend him?
My younger brother (who unfortunately watches a lot of people like iDubbbz and FilthyFrank and h3h3 and until recently Pewds) defended Felix at first with the whole WSJ thing (and I argued with him about it) but once this happened he admitted there wasn't any excuse for what Felix did and that he shouldn't be saying shit like that, ever, let alone to 57million subscribers. I hope he's not too taken in by this 'apology' and that this is the beginning of Felix's fall from power.

`i think this apology video is absolute bullsh*t - he doesn't think he did anything wrong, he was just trying to make sure he still has a paycheque, since he lost most of the rest of his YT-related revenue streams last time he showed his racist side.

I'm ashamed to say I thought the previous scandal was just a poor attempt at being 'edgy' and people were taking it too seriously/out of context. I feel really terrible about that.

Even if the word slipped out of his mouth 'in the heat of the moment' 'without him thinking' or whatever, that word is never on the tip of your tongue unless you use it often. Even if I was trying to think of the most offensive name I could possibly call someone, I don't think that word would even come to my mind, never mind out of my mouth.

I read this Twitter thread (starts with the tweet I'm linking) which holds exactly true for me, although I was a teen in the 00's, not the 90's. Am reposting it here as I think it's important reading.
It makes me sad that horrible racist slurs like this have lost their power to shock today. Pewdiepie doesn't deserve to have the platform he has - I hope Google speak up/take action as the person with the biggest platform on the whole of YouTube should not be allowed to behave like this. Freedom of speech doesn't mean 'I can say what I want without any consequences' and I hope Felix realises that.

(Sorry, I feel so strongly about this).

all I see is someone refusing to educate himself. He didn't say WHY that's a word he can't say and tbh I dont believe he won't say it again (in private). Plus- he could have used this video to maybe educate his audience, which judging from the comment section is pretty ignorant.

Ugh, what an 'apology' that was. Any apology that contains a variation of 'sorry if you were offended' is trash. This was only the bare minimum to protect himself and so his minions can say "WELL HE APOLOGIZED SO HE KNOWS HE DID WRONG YOU SHOULD FORGIVE HIM" whenever someone dares to speak against him.

He's really not sorry at all and I don't believe for a second he has any feelings over other gamers using the word (it's also pretty disgusting he tries to blame others for his own behavior like you're a grown man take some responsibility for yourself) because if he did it wouldn't have ~slipped out~ like that's not how that works. I swear A LOT (it's a problem lol) but the n-word is not in my vocabulaire so I never say it on accident either. His initial reaction to saying it would've been different to.. all he did was 'lol sorry' and laughing it off.

"I know I can't keep getting away with this.." made my blood boil. Uh yes he can and that's the damn problem. His position of power not only in the world as a rich white cishet male but also in the community as most subscribed and face of the platform makes it that he can keep getting away with this shit. And he knows it.

That's an insult to cavemen. (No really, stone age people were probably way less ignorant and hateful than Felix...)

That non-apology just left me angrier than I was before to be honest. It's your typical "I don't understand why what I did was wrong but I'm going to say sorry because people are mad at me" bull. Completely insincere. He could have tried to explain to his fanbase why that word isn't okay to say, he could have asked his fanbase to stop coming after people who criticise him... he didn't do any of that and now we can all sit back and wait a couple months for his next scandal.

I don't normally watch PewDiePie, especially recently, but this video popped up on my YT main page:

If you don't want to watch it for yourself, he kind of owns up to the mistake (still nowhere near enough) and talks about copyright claims, because the developer of Firewatch said he would take down what videos he can via copyright laws, and invited other game developers to do the same.
Felix said that 3 copyright strikes = channel will be terminated, and he already has one thanks to the Firewatch company.

What do you think? Would be interesting if other developers join in.

I think it would be terrible if other developers joined in, if they based their copyright claim on the fact that they don't like him.

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending what he said or saying that his apology was sufficient, but the Firewatch devs shouldn't abuse a grey zone in their favour. I respect him for not taking this to court, but if more devs joined in and forced his channel shut, I guess I'd have to take legal actions - and neither outcome (Let's Plays deemed legal/illegal) would be good for him. If the copyright takedowns were wrong, he's an ass for going after them; if Let's Plays are indeed illegal, he (and a large chunk of YTs) lose their job.

Take legal actions against him for using slurs, or whatever other things he has been up to, but don't abuse the copyright system.

Yeah, I'm sure that won't happen, but I do hope some other companies join in. He doesn't deserve special treatment. :/

Lol, people, he's spent half the video criticizing the game and then end with "i think it's a great game". He was so smug, the video just felt like he was showing his muscles to that game dev. and laying the groundwork so he can twist this to his advantage in the future, nothing more.

This development is perfect for him, diverting attention, he doesn't even apologize properly, and will even make him the victim and then he'll probably come back as a champion to the crowd that defended his behavior and language.

(this is what I can remember from a media law module I sat 3 years ago so take it with a pinch of salt)

The copyright strikes won't hold up and therefore YouTube won't take down his channel because it would come under the category of 'Fair Use'. Its not like he is uploading himself playing the game direct to YouTube, he is commenting on it (and to an extent, promoting it) which provides a transformative element that essentially means, he is using their material as a basis for something different. And it is a mutually beneficial transaction because the game gets exposed to millions and million of people. Besides, YouTube and Google wouldn't let a precedent like that be set, especially not by their biggest celebrity. I don't want to see gaming YouTubers be forced out of their jobs by Felix being a racist arsehole. Which is sad because it realistically means that the best thing smaller devs could do in this situation is to not send Felix codes, rather than trying to file copyright complaints, but this sadly means they lose out on a LOT of promotion.

Also re: what he said.

Basically, the anti-semitism was abhorrent and disgusting. But it could be defended, if you tried hard enough, as a bad joke. (rant about how anti-semitism is still somewhat acceptable goes here) but this... like what? How do you defend literally the mother of racist slurs - like how does that come out while you're streaming? Wtf. And its not even a phrase that is outmoded or has undergone pejoration to become something that is offensive - it's unanimously agreed that its a word that is so loaded with racist meaning that you just don't say it. Its not something that was once acceptable in his lifetime, like my grandparents calling Asian people coloured - which they have been socialised into believing is okay, this is something that EVERYONE is socialised into knowing is not okay. I don't understand how this comes out during a stream, i.e. a day at work, unless it is something that is part of your lexicon.

Honestly, the more I think about it the more i'm pissed off. I understand that when you're gaming and its intense insults can fly (I have called Link some horrible things in the past for example) and swearing happens more frequently - look at the D&P Crash Bandicoot video etc. But when you're streaming and you can't edit it out, you should have a filter? Look at Phil with swish swish bitch and how he tried to cover it up and bitch isn't even that bad in the grand scheme of 'bad words', not very on brand but it's hardly the end of the world. This... like NarrysCanary and goldenmermaid said, unless it was either deliberate or is part of how he normally talks, there is no way this is an accident because he was in a situation where he should have been thinking more than normal about what he said. Saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if it was deliberate controversy he's stirring - because I still can't believe that THAT word would just fall out.

Agreed, this move pretty much backfired for the people who made the copyright claim.

And even if it was an accident, his apology was pure bullshit. I do think that he is sorry for what he said but he could at least explain why it's wrong to say that word and try to educate his audience that now spam the comment section with the n word like it's something funny to say.

I know lots of people here don't like Jefree Star (me neither) but if you watch his apology video, for the racist things he said in the past, that's how an apology is made. He talked about racism, why he said those things, and that his feelings at that moment doesn't excuse him for his bad behaviour. It's a 15 minutes video vs. the 1 minute video Felix made.

They are his friends and were one of those who rallied around him when the first scandal happened. But H3H3 criticized Pewdiepie in their podcast, basically saying they were disappointed in him, and are getting crazy backlash for it.

Apparently, the next day after the "apology" video he almost did it again in another livestream and laughed it off with "oops almost slipped up again". I don't think he's sorry.

I'm happy that h3h3 criticized Felix for the use of that word, that's pretty brave of him, especially after what happened to Jacksepticeye.
Though some of what they're saying about the situation I don't quite agree with, such as the "We all say this kind of offensive stuff with our friends because it's funny, but he shouldn't have said it because he was livestreaming" attitude. Felix really just shouldn't have had that word in his lexicon at all, and you shouldn't use racial slurs as a joke with your friends.

YT keeps recommending his videos to me and this came up. He is actually MAKING FUN OF RACISM at the beginning of this video. Is he? Or am I too sensitive?

What really annoys me is that he isn't asking "Why was what I did bad? Why did it hurt people?". He's just scared of getting caught at it and getting into trouble. He just doesn't understand what the problem with his behaviour is at all and at this point, with so many people explaining it over and over again for him on the internet, his ignorance is just embarassing. I hope he's going to be over for good soon.

Yeah, I don't like how he is using sarcasm as if it's going to make everything better. He keeps saying he's a "christian channel" now I didn't know you needed to be a christian to not be racist, it annoyed me so much. And at the end he said something like he's grateful that people keep supporting him and that he knows he shouldn't get more chances. Since he knows why does he keep being messy then ? I honestly don't know why I watched the video until the end.

Yeah, he almost makes it sound like it's a sacrifice not to be racist. He isn't sorry at all, just like the last time.
