Maybe not all of these are rebelling against religion exactly, some are just memes, but to a Christian person they could be considered disrespectful

First of all thanks for compiling And as someone religious- not Christian,(jewish actually whaddup) some of those are def in Camp Sacrilegious. As in, from that, I see a clear indication of what he thinks of Gd and stuff! Interesting but I kind of already figured it out.

Thanks for the tumblr analyses! I'm not brave enough and don't have enough time to go through either of their tumblrs, but I'm enjoying the reblog sorting. As a Christian, I was also curious about the religion-related reblogs. Some definitely made me frown, but hey what can you do. It's not my sense of humour but it's sure to be somebody's.
[offtopic]And violet-writer, I totally get you about watching internet stuff with people who don't know how to internet beyond facebook memes. My mum got wind of my deppy obsession once, and the convo was SO awkward. She still doesn't really know who they are tbh.
Mum: so, who are Dan and Phil?
Me: They're YouTubers
Mum: like Rhett and Link?
Me: yes
Mum: but what do they DO??
Me: um
Then I showed her a few videos by them and she looked thoroughly confused the entire time, while I just sat there cringing. I don't think she watched enough or the right vids to pick up on the phan undertones though.[/offtopic]

Thanks! As a Christian person I honestly found the majority of those super funny (oops?) but I can definitely see how some can easily be viewed as offensive. But honestly it doesn't exactly surprise me that much based on what Dan has said in the past. But a while ago I was looking through his archive and I found a post that I thought was really weird he reblogged:confetti-j wrote:Maybe not all of these are rebelling against religion exactly, some are just memes, but to a Christian person they could be considered disrespectful

yeah. but i want to consider this tweet as both phil talking about boys and a phan proof at the same time. can i?please?let me dream.JoeAverage wrote: Pretty sure this doesnt count as him talking about "boys" again, but I thought it was cute of him to share.
he also replied to someone about the filming yesterday: does he mean getting up from bed at 5am or did they do actual "exercise" for youtube rewind?
Weird that I wake up after having dreamt about Dan talking about religion, there's talk here about Dan&religion. Offtopic dream description alert:
If they present the Teen Awards (Dan's tweet certainly made it seem like they will) they still are doing something radio 1 related so yay. (Even though I don't care one bit about the Teen Awards)

I know it’s not really my place to say anything but if anybody is interested in an opinion from the other side, as someone who has similar views on religion as Dan, I find pictures 5, 6, 7, and the last one (somehow) offensive (mostly 5 and the last one). Nothing major but it goes along with what we know about him.confetti-j wrote:Maybe not all of these are rebelling against religion exactly, some are just memes, but to a Christian person they could be considered disrespectful

Hi!
Wow, I'm out of the loop. Been real life-ing it for a month now and I gotta tell you, IRL is a very weird concept. No one knows who Deppy or 1D are or what OTP or cis person stands for - but I did get to shake hands with James Marsters so I'm cool with it. Decided it's about time I caught up with the internet and all you lovely people again. From what I understand Deppy's been mostly Tatinof-ing and making the charts and dropping hints they're moving, yeah? Am I caught up?
I updated the drug deal since apparently the link broke while I was gone, it should be up and running like usual again now, with some new additions.
STOKED for Spooky Week and Undertale Week, what a time to make a comeback!

thank you for being brave
I wouldn't have put it quite this strongly, but essentially I agree. Maybe just because I don't find any of those posts even remotely offensive. I'm not religious, but I do frequent the internet, and I agree that these are basically just memes and jokes. If you're offended by these, were you offended by that DITL where Phil drew a pentagram? I don't see much of a difference between that and these posts, honestly I feel like if I were religious I'd be more weirded out or offended by the random pentagram than clear jokes.human wrote:Disrespectful? I can't speak for myself, since I'm an atheist, but I feel like even religious people joke about it sometimes. Like, I had a super Christian friend, like diehard, but she would reblog memes mocking her religion like it was nothing. Maybe she's an anomaly, but what I'm trying to say is, that I don't think these memes directly speak to Dan's exact feelings on religion. They're not serious. I don't think we can look at these and be like "Dan is a jesus hating atheist." I just don't think that's a logical connection to make. Dan's sense of humor has always been kind of...is crude the right word? For example, he had that link to eelsoup on his blog until, like, 2013-ish. I never clicked it because I knew I'd be scarred, but he seemed to think it was hilarious to trick people into going to a weird-ass porn site. Obviously he's never been too worried about offending sensitive people. And it's never really come to bite him soooo
Bonus:
Lol, I hope deppy lurk here just so Phil can mock Dan about this post now.human wrote:I laughed at the "this will be me when i'm 30" because Phil is almost 30, I wonder how old Dan thinks 30 actually is haha.

Didn't Dan hint in his last liveshow that whatever tatinof related content they had left (that works as a separate thing and will be on Phil's channel) was going to be posted before his next ls, so he'll talk to us about it?
Phil likes to upload on Mondays and Fridays, so I'm guessing Friday then?

I disagree to some of your comments dan should be able to reblog anything he wants its his blog, its freedom of speech if we say that he shoudnt reblog it because its deemned offensive thats just akin to cencoreship, if he says something thats offensive we should be able to critisize dan and argue who is in the right thats how we grow as people. And thats how social issues are solved.hypothesised wrote:oh man, i don't really lurk on dan's tumblr but some of those posts are... in my country he could be charged in court for these comments! these are posts that may offend people, but i guess he's surrounded by supportive friends and a fanbase so maybe he feels he could reblog those things? hm maybe as the phandom grows larger he might have to mince his words more online before he gets into a argument.violet-writer wrote:As in, from that, I see a clear indication of what he thinks of Gd and stuff! Nobody is censoring Dan. Someone was offended by stuff Dan posted on social media and expressed that not by sending him 50 messages telling him he needs to stop what his doing but by going on here a message board designed for fans to discuss him amongst themselves and sharing their thoughts on the posts. That's not censoring him.
I personally don't find any of the posts in question the slightest bit offensive but I know I don't get to decide what offends other other people.

On Dan's religion posts: coming from a Christian background, I don't think any of them other than maybe that last one (and even there, there are technicalities) are outright sacrilege (and yes, I even grinned at a few). He may think of them as such and they'd definitely be offensive to some but sacrilege? Nah. What is there is a trend (in line with the rest of his aesthetic) of finding humor in juxtaposition and irony.
He has other religion posts that are similar but milder and more neutral with references to popular and/or internet culture rather than more hot button topics like politics and/or sexual expression (and this seems to be the trend on his blog more recently):

I still read these posts as critique in the same vein but with a decision on his part, whether he felt pressured into it or not, to move away from forms of it that may offend some of his audience, fanbase, and/or present and future collaborators and colleagues. Maybe it's his way of testing the waters with a topic that he wants to get into more but has opted against outside of tumblr for the time being. He's talked about defying categorization when it comes to identity before and I suspect it's a similar case with religion for him.
I'm always fascinated whenever deppy + religion topics come up because I don't think either of them outright reject all matters of religion and/or spirituality completely and they seem to be more respectful than many in their line of work (well, except for some of dan's "colorful" swears...but remember earlier this year Phil reminded him that people were telling him to stop - in one of the gaming videos, I think- and he actually did. And Phil saying in his recent ls that he won't do ouija boards for spooky week b/c some people are offended by them). I was only at the Other Place briefly but didn't they have a board on the subject? Perhaps we can bring it back if others want to continue the discussion on another thread? OK, overanalyzing!star over and out [dan salute].

People are offended by ouija boards???
I mean sure if you feel a bit spooked by them but
PERSONAL OPINION ALERT
Ouija boards are total nonsense and the only reason to not use one in entertainment media is copyright of the board design which is the arguably most popular one. It's cool to use their imagery in clothes or whatever but the occult is *mostly* not tied down to a religion, unless you're using pagan or Wiccan imagery. Phil has been openly superstitious and like whatever he's not harming anyone if he refuses to have shoes on the table, but I can't see why "contacting" the dead through a plank of wood would be offensive.
Now, Jumanji, now that I can understand not playing

I think it's sweet. There are so many things I do/won't do out of respect for my incredibly superstitious mama: walk under a ladder, knock on wood, make plans on Sundays, throw salt over my shoulder, talk ill of the dead, etc. Superstitions tend to run deep. I certainly do do those things, I just try not to in front of my mother.melon lord wrote:People are offended by ouija boards???

My mother is also somewhat religious, and I am an atheist. I am very respectful about what I say in front of her. That being said, I am also quite keen on those with any sort of popularity/public sway speaking out against religion. It is still taboo in the US, tbh. Yay, Dan!

So that being said, if you really believe in ghosts and not "fucking around" with them, then I can understand how ouija boards can be offensive? Like, leave the ghosts alone?
Also a quick google search shows that Christianity condemns talking to spirits. So there's that.[/offtopic]
I think that Phil not wanting to offend people with a ouija board is really sweet. Dan, though, probably doesn't give two fucks. Which is who he is, which is also endearing, in a way.
I saw a post on tumblr being like "tell people not to fuck around with summoning ghosts this halloween, it's really dangerous" and I analyzed it for any inkling of a joking tone and I couldn't find any, so I complained to my friend like "do people really believe in ghosts" and he was like "yeah." I pressed him but he stood his ground. Previous to that experience, I was completely convinced that no one actually believed in ghosts and it was all a big joke, basically. Maybe I was right and my friend was fucking around with me and I'm just gullible, but I'm under the impression that people really believe in ghosts and ouija boards and spirits.melon lord wrote:People are offended by ouija boards???
So that being said, if you really believe in ghosts and not "fucking around" with them, then I can understand how ouija boards can be offensive? Like, leave the ghosts alone?
Also a quick google search shows that Christianity condemns talking to spirits. So there's that.[/offtopic]
I think that Phil not wanting to offend people with a ouija board is really sweet. Dan, though, probably doesn't give two fucks. Which is who he is, which is also endearing, in a way.
Phil looks like he went to sleep at 6 AM and is dying inside, Dan glows like he spent the night having orgasms - Ticia
The only thing that offends me about Dan's tumblr is that he never tags anything I HATE when people do this
...also makes it sooo much harder (or fun???) to speculate about the posts in question and his reasonings.
yes I am the person who goes to your blog if you reblog one of my posts and will be personally offended if you didn't tag it with an opinion

There are so many things I do/won't do out of respect for my incredibly superstitious mama: walk under a ladder, knock on wood, make plans on Sundays, throw salt over my shoulder, talk ill of the dead, etc. Superstitions tend to run deep. I certainly do do those things, I just try not to in front of my mother.
My mother is also somewhat religious, and I am an atheist. I am very respectful about what I say in front of her. That being said, I am also quite keen on those with any sort of popularity/public sway speaking out against religion. It is still taboo in the US, tbh. Yay, Dan!
@Philena Phil being superstitious is harmless and endearing, especially since it's Phil.eevee wrote:

But I come from a religious family and a deeply religious area and I have come away with very negative experiences from both parties so to me the thought of religion is that knee-jerk reaction of "ew", especially when my family try and impose it on me. So I guess it's just my worldview or something, I wouldn't like... intentionally upset Phil and his superstitions if I was around him, for instance.
@eevee People do believe in ghosts for real. It's one of the less harmful supernatural beliefs, to be sure, but I wouldn't call using a board "offensive". I mean, why do you have to be offensive towards the dead, rather than genuinely curious? Why have malicious intent? Do you know what I mean? Like to me, to offend ghosts is to purposefully use the board to antagonise or mock people, regardless if they are corporeal or not. Most people find it exciting and fun, and not in a mean way.
I want to explain I find a difference between literally offending the actual dead people and offending what the dead people once stood for (activists, people who died to protect their rights, the list can go on). Being disrespectful to a dead person's legacy is a real thing, but offending a dead person isn't, even if they are ghosts.
And then you have the spiralling conversation of what a ghost is. Can it pick stuff up? Is it solid enough to move objects around it? Is it transparent? semi-opaque, just visible enough to see? Is it there all the time or does it vanish? Can it actually harm you or is it just a static ball of energy? Does it have feelings? What does it feel? How does it feel? How does it get picked up in photos? Why does it assume a human body shape rather than just a floaty blob? Does it have memories or a conscience? Does it know right from wrong?
I enjoy my spooks in games and campfire stories, that's about it tbh.
