COOL
I like musicals and horror and animation. Which I think is a weird combination, but I love it. Also the kinds of movie that hated on the most!

My faves are: Fantasia, Scream, Moonrise Kingdom, Mary Poppins, Struck by Lightning and Rent.

Oh my god favourite films it the hardest thing ever: recently I really enjoyed Spotlight, Room and The Hateful Eight (all of these are really sad and serious oops) but I also love animated films (Inside Out made me cry) and movie musicals (anyone seen The Last Five Years?) and adaptations of YA books although I generally hate them cause they ruin the stories I loved..
In general if it makes me laugh a lot or cry a lot I'll enjoy it
Also I recently started using the app letterboxd to keep track of what films I've watched and it's pretty awesome

So ok... I’ve made a short list of films dan maybe hasn’t seen yet, but might enjoy them for one reason or another. Since I can’t really give it to him I might as well post it here:

les quatre cents coups (1959)
au revoir les enfants (1987)
ohayō (1959)
yoidore tenshi (1948)
der junge törless (1966)
les amities particulieres (1964)
l'enfance nue (1968)
zéro de conduite (1933)
stranger than paradise (1984)
mouchette (1967)
ivan’s childhood (1962)
a pigeon sat on a branch reflecting on existence (2014)
le samourai (1967)
le feu follet (1963)
rocco e i suoi fratelli (1960)
les enfants terribles (1950)
mishima: a life in four chapters (1985)

I reckon he has probably seen naked lunch (1991) since it’s pretty well known and he has seen kill your darlings
and again, has probably seen total eclipse (1995) too, since young leo is in it. It’s not really a good film, It’s more about the subject - the one and only: arthur rimbaud.

I might make a list of my favourite films in the future ...or not since not many people like bela tarr

Without thinking too deeply, because then I'd start listing by the dozens, movies I always come back to:

Victor/Victoria, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (I have many issues with this movie, but eff it, love the music and songs), The Slipper and the Rose, The Terminal, Ever After, Little Miss Sunshine, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron, Fantasia (first one), a lot more disney.

Terribly mainstream, I just realized. But hey, someone's got to be.

I'm terrible at 'favourites', but I guess in terms of films I've watched recently:
Wild (2014) - found this a little twee in places, but i really liked the way it was filmed and how it was structured with the flashbacks and different characters drifting in and out. reese witherspoon was good. it also made me want to go on a crazy walk to escape from life, so proceed with caution if you're easily persuaded like me.
(rewatched) The Mist (2007) - i love this film purely for Marcia Gay Harden (also loved her in The Newsroom). although the ending makes me want to shriek with frustration every time, it's a great study in how humans cope in peril. also, i'm not a huge horror person and still enjoy this.
The Last King of Scotland - just great, Forest Whitaker is brilliant and unstable and terrifying, and it definitely prompted me to go away and research the situation in Uganda.
Deadpool - (i know this is technically a superhero film but... sorry) went to see this in the cinema when it came out and thought is was great. the irreverent tone was a great antidote to a whole lot of superhero films that take themselves a tad too seriously.

In terms of films I'm highly anticipating, High Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley, is on my to-watch-asap list. As an adaptation of one of my favourite books, I'm obviously wary and there have been mixed reviews, but I need to see it for myself, even to tear it apart lol.

Spotlight and The Big Short are definitely my 2016 oscar favs!

Spotlight because I like this kind of socio-political movie, it has the richest story structure, every character is well written, and all the actors are super good, my only critic will be, the mise-en-scene is too simplified and lack of director's personal style. But the script is so so good.

The Big Short is a lot better in terms of being cinematically creative, feels like the director is playing with the forth wall and the boundary of movie genre itself. It's like the way he tells story is completely free, and full of surprise, and it's weird, but amazing.

I've heard a lot of good things about that film, it's near the top of my ridiculously long watchlist!
I watched Me, Earl and the Dying Girl the other day and it's really weird but I loved it, it was really beautifully shot and I've been thinking about it a lot since.
Not quite as much sobbing as when I saw TFIOS but would recommend :sobs:

I am not a pro at horror movies but both the conjuring and sinister scared me quite a lot.
There is also Orphan (2009) and Mama (2010), Psycho.
Ju on (the original version of the grudge) and the ring japanese version are scary too.
I haven't seen the babadook but everyone says it's great

Came here to rec A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. It's like a very aesthetically pleasing B-movie, imagine if Sin City + From Dusk Till Dawn were filmed by an iranian feminist. Quite violent but all the bad guys get punished by a cool and sometimes endearing vampire girl who saves women of the city. Awesome, awesome soundtrack and beautifully shot

elias, great list

Just saw the first trailer yesterday and I am really happy with how it looks. When I first heard about the movie I wasn't very interested in it, but this made me change my mind. I will go and see this movie in cinema when it comes out.

The actual trailer for anyone who is interested:

No it’s not. It’s a standalone movie set in the Star Wars universe, that takes place shortly before A New Hope begins. Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah, I think it looks pretty cool! It wouldn't have been my first choice of topic for a standalone SW film (I wanna see something Old Republic), but I'm excited to see it. I believe it's supposed to be a kind of 'heist' film - telling the story of how they stole the plans to the original Death Star.
(I'm curious if we'll find out who the 'Bothans' are of Mon Mothma's quote - 'many Bothans died to give us this information'') oops, they stole the second Death Star plans. nvm

There will be a new Star Wars movie every year for the next... while... haha. They will be alternation between the 'main' movies (i.e. Ep 8, 9) and standalone 'Star Wars Anthology' movies focusing on some other part of the Star Wars world:
Rogue One comes out December 2016, then SW Ep. 8 Dec. 2017, an untitled SW Anthology: Han Solo origins story in May 2018, SW Ep. 9 in 2019, and then another SW Anthology (rumoured to be Boba Fett) in 2020.

In unrelated news, the teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been released, and it looks pretty cool!

I really like heist movies, so one set in the Star Wars universe is something I'm all for. I'm very much okay with having a Star Wars movie every year as well, the more the merrier.

I'm so excited about this! The music and the mention of Hogwarts in Newt's past, I can't wait! Its been way too long since the last Harry Potter film and I need more of that whole world. :)
Depending on when the premiere is I'm considering going to London and camping out like a crazy person to try and get autographs at the red carpet, cause I was always too young for the premieres when the HP films came out

I'm always up for new stuff from the Harry Potter universe. I'm still waiting for a book set in the marauders' time period. Can't blame you for wanting to do that, if I lived closer, I might be doing the same thing.

I went to see zootopia/zootropolis yesterday and I gotta say I was quite disappointed after hearing so many dithyrambic reviews. The characters were cute and there were a lot a nice touches and funny moments but the plot and character stories were so cliché and formulaic. Everything was unoriginal, I knew the villain and basically the whole plot as soon as he was shown.

*excited noises and flailing ensue*

although if I'm going to nitpick: - that ain't how the animus works... but watching MF lying motionless throughout won't be hugely interesting, so I'm inclined to let it slide. Maybe.
