Woo fandom chat
Should we go around saying what fandoms we're 'in' or something?
I started out with Harry Potter (and am still ridiculously invested - seeing Cursed Child in the autumn and excited as heck for Fantastic Beasts) and now am into bits of a whole range of stuff including Doctor Who (the old stuff I don't like Capaldi much), Sherlock, GBBO, Gilmore Girls (& Guys!), Recovery Road, Shadowhunters, the Marvel films, generally most films/books tbh

Yay, fandom. Where to start...
I ship Dramione in HP for God knows why. I just love the idea of the anti hero is really a good guy, he was mislead, circumstances force him to be the bad guy etc.. They were so cute together in my head.

Johnlock, of course. Haha. No explanation needed on that one.

I also ship 00Q for some odd reason. (james bond)

How I Met Your Mother - swarkles (robin and barney)
Gossip Girl - chair (chuck and blair)
Marvel Cinematic Universe - stony because there is so much sexual tension I just cant
Ace Attorney - Edgey-poo and Phoenix, ofc

Anybody from UK remember the whole Milifandom thing last year? It is amazing because I was constantly on tumblr that week, and suddenly milifandom come out of nowhere. I lived at a labour-stronghold, so everyone talked about it in yikyak. Haha. Milibae.

Ha, that was great. There's actually a big UK politics fandom on tumblr and it was a huge thing on LJ at the beginning of the last government. Somewhat embarrassingly, it's the only fandom I'm really invested in other than D & P (and harry potter but everyone's into that right), but its tumblr side gets a bit weird sometimes (plus ça change)

2013 was a shitty year for a queer person to be in any fandom
so it was probably more of a result of multiple things happening in a short span of time. for me it was kicked off by SPN in the first half of 2013, following by Moffat - getting on my nerves for a long time with the final nail in coffin of Capaldi announcement and dismissal of non-cis-male doctor, OUAT breaking up Mulan and Aurora (yesthankyousomuchforanothertragiclesbianstorylikeIneedthatshit) and the final nail was s3 of bbc Sherlock (and again more what Moffat said behind scenes) that made me decide to retire from any fandom world as such, (Finale of Faking it just justifying my decision, and some other shows as well), but damn world is a sad and blank place and without fandoms even more. (so with phandom it seems relaxing cause I don't have to worry about things that I would worry with TV like representation in characters and such and getting pissed off because as Dan said (I wasn't there for his 2012 thing, but yeah) 'on tumblr people accept, but real life is shit and has tons of judgment' (not exact words, but can't find the ls now) and then have a tv show where the runners treat me as a viewer as shit - well who needs that, not me 8-) )
I suspected SPN would be the answer, but yeah I forgot about a lot of the Moffatt stuff ugh. I've been watching The 100 and it was going pretty well and then of course they had to fall into the (yesthankyousomuchforanothertragiclesbianstorylikeIneedthatshit) trap and I'm close to rage-quitting based on some other dumb character choices. Decent queer-friendly fandoms are hard to come by in any year..
ah I completely forgot about The 100 - so many repressed memories. Yes that one too... :( Also quit orphan black cause delphine&cosima were again starting to fall under above mentioned trap and I also hated the introduction of male clones (like srsly wtf why nope). (and honestly I am probably the only one who doesn't get why so many ppl worship GoT...) Still watching orange is the new black and am intrigued what will happen in 2nd season of Powers (I don't want to praise it before I'll see where they'll take it).

and I've highlighted your sentence, cause never a truer words have been spoken - I'm seriously at loss what to watch/read...

I'm in/have been in... possibly too many fandoms... As seems to be fairly common, HP, Doctor Who (pre-showrunner!Moffat)/Torchwood, and MCU are pretty big keystones of my fandom life, and I'm actually a bit of a sports nut, though tennis and F1 and probably the only sports I'd really say I was in the fandom of(/that a fandom really exists for). My very first fandom was High School Musical, then Twilight (briefly!), Merlin, Inception, The Social Network, One Direction, Les Misérables, James Bond (I also ship 00Q swofro!), Teen Wolf, Shameless, and Pride probably all deserve a mention. I will read fic of pretty much anything I've read/watched though, and am a ridiculous multishipper too - D&P are pretty much the only people I don't have about five ships for!

Oh man, Milifandom... Honestly, I still feel like that might have been a very bizarre dream the UK collectively had!

I kept meaning to get into The 100, but glad I seem to have dodged that bullet :/ IDK what your general interests are, awkwardly, but I'd recommend the 2014 film Pride to absolutely anyone looking for queer friendly stories! It's based on the true story of a queer group in London who supported the UK miner's strike in the 80s, and while not 100% happy - the presence of HIV/AIDs is unavoidable - is a wonderful uplifting tale of solidarity and unity at its core! (though it is also 100% white, and entirely focussed on the G and the L... but still my favourite film!) And books-wise, I haven't read too much recently, but Malinda Lo is reliably pretty great for YA fantasy.

edit:
Don't know how I forgot to mention Hamilton!! I am obsessed with Hamilton at the moment, it's a little ridiculous.

ah yes, I've seen the trailer for Pride, but haven't had time to watch it yet. I really need something uplifting (cause I'm just so disappointed with the local irl LGBTQ+ community lately..) So thank you for reminding me

regarding fandoms (or all things I've watched cause I've watched things that I didn't participate in fandoms) I guess the list would be super long as I'm Phil's age group. So it would be anime for me as well (though NOT pokemon :D but lots of sailor moon only to find out years and years later that there was a lot of queer censorship on that one from german tv. :x And then of course many many more (around 150, I still have a list with my top ones ), but I stopped some years ago cause I think the quality of anime stories went down around 4 or so y ago.) Then along came Buffy, and I had my room full of sarah michelle gellar posters :D (and yeah, will never forgive willow/tara which made me realize for the first time why I had so many SMG posters...ehm... but I wasn't affected by it at the time as much, cause I was too preoccupied with buffy herself, so I only later I realized a lot of problematic stuff - like honestly I don't understand why Phil is such Spike fan with the [trigger warning - though I won't mention it] things the writers made him do. Yes when you watch it as very young person you don't realize, but omg please tell me that he realizes now... :? ) Then there was HP for YEARS (I guess those were the best times I ever had, nostalgic  ) Then again anime, then DW, SPN, Sherlock (I deeply regret Superlock time, though it was a valuable sj lesson I guess...). I wish DW got a different showrunner & diverse cast so I could go back to watching it... (watched Torchwood as well, but that depressed me for good - I mean why do even queer ppl themselves have to write horrific tragic stuff) and lots of the other shows that I mentioned above after that. (and of course the whole thor/avengers, cause of Loki cause living in perpetual crisis just makes me connect with such characters but can't wait forever for lady loki can I...)

The only thing I never watched is in the flesh, cause of being it depressing too, and I'm just at the point that I can't anymore, but everytime I watch katrindepp I just... gosh

Thank you awkwardly for that fanvid of in the flesh. fantastic. I really like the series, just wish they had done 3 episodes for the second series and then hopefully had had a third one after. And I agree, Torchwood ripped my heart out and the last season was a waste of time.

I get frustrated when potential character development that is tangible and honest, is left to wither, or warped due to mainstream acceptability.

As for Harry Potter, not enough space in the universe (even if it is expanding)(in some parts)(supposedly its' shrinking elsewhere)(not my point) to say all I would say. If there's a pairing out there, I've read it. Tentacles are everywhere (and so are snakes). Marcus Flint/HP always stood out. Also, read o/a/b (whatev they're now called) before they were called anything. I've actually been around long enough for the second wave to come along. Moving on.

Anyone remember a canadian teen series named Higher Ground? great music, great actors, single season.

!!!! Man I powered through the whole of Dance Academy in like two weeks and was so sad when it was all over. I still go back and re-watch it all the time though. It was silly fluff and so dramatic but something about it was so good! Most of the actors were so good. I think I just had a big soft spot for Sammy. goes into corner and cries

In the flesh is so, so good, but as you said, very, very sad. I'm so mad the BBC canceled it. First they did that with The Hour, and now this perfect show >:^(

Yep, that's the one! I just truly appreciate his perfect perfect face.

You know, I've liked many a band than featured gratuitous making out on stage, but that era of Glambert was almost too much for even me. No fandom should have that much 'content'.

My husband has (finally) started watching Sherlock, and today he came into the room and asked, "So are they gay? Were they gay in the books? Or did they just write them as a couple in this version." I just burst out laughing. He was so confused as to why I was laughing so hard. After my laughing had subsided he asked again, "So are they?" I just said, "just watch the show. then get back to me with that. He is on episode 3 of the first season. He was so annoyed that I wouldn't tell him. I told he to look us some stuff on it if he wanted to know so bad.

He just came back to me (hours later) and said, "So they are." I just laughed again. I asked him where he looked, he had googled it and was bombarded with JohnLock stuff.

I for one can't wait until he watches the rest of the show and see what he says. He is very much in the 'they are' boat now I can't wait til season 2. I told him he has accidentally entered a fandom. He had no idea what I was on about. I am having way too much fun with this.

I didn't think I had that many fandoms until I started thinking properly about it. Now I wonder how I have time for anything

-Harry Potter- Easily my longest fandom membership. Still obsessed to this day. I wouldn't say I have any ships though (except for me and oliver wood)

-Game of Thrones- I will literally avoid social media until I watch the new episode

-The walking dead- Forever shipping Caryl

-Gossip girl/glee/torchwood etc- I'm not still as obsessed with these fandoms, but I definitely was when they were at their prime.

I have a request-
are there any fandom niches that are as in depth as indepthbants? not even Phan related- any site that writes like 5 paragraphs over a blurry item in the background. I enjoy reading people using thier intellectual power for useless things.

I am a star wars trash and have been for years. I love the expanded universe so much it hurts (and hurt when it was said it's all legends... sigh)

And well I do enjoy my anime fandoms deeply - be it apocalyptic shonen or a sports anime . Eh. If anyone is into SnK, I can share with you my ultimate treasure - two eremin (the best ship, fight me) fanfictions of extreme lenght but very good quality. Will make you cry, but not more than the actual manga.

My first fandom has been Harry Potter. I'm not keeping up with current things, but I will never forger. Hinny was my otp when I was tiny. Probably my first ship lmao.

i used to be in a TON of fandoms, blood on the dance floor, my little pony: FiM, doctor who for a short time, uh..justin bieber (if there was a fandom for that). now i'm just in the phandom and the steven universe fandom. i'm also sort of in the glee fandom, even though it's dying off :c

edit: also now that i remember i was in the victorious fandom big time on tumblr back when it was popular. i was also in the game grumps fandom for a while as well. i'm..also sort of in the star vs the forces of evil fandom somewhat.

omg this!! I love this kind of overanalyzing and speculating and live reactions.
the only thing I can think of are subreddits? I used to be an avid reader of the Mr. Robot one when S2 was airing, also the Serial one was lit during the hype.

I also like following the reactions on tumblr for fandoms I'm in, especially stuff that gets updates weekly, like manga chapters. The memes and analysis that come out of these can be top-notch. (like during the final 100 chapters of Naruto, when everybody was freaking out about how terrible everything was and the fandom turned into one big shitpost and it was glorious)
But honestly you need to follow the right people and it doesn't feel as much like a community.
Being on IDB reminded me how great forums actually are, and I'm glad they are still a thing (also not much changed in style and functions during the last 10 years so that is also hilarious)

Reminds me of the SnK fandom analyzing a piece of floor the other month. Turns out it was just editors trolling, but the analyses were amazing. Would recommend it, but I haven't ever seen unbiased meta posts. Mostly for the characters that aren't the main trio because that wouldn't be edgy and adult enough.

I've been to some fandoms before, but most of the time... it's only a month before I quit and transfer to another one where I'll be more invested in (or not, and transfer again). Prepare for a long rant, people.

The first fandom that I became a part of was the KHR fandom, and is probably one of the fandoms that I got really invested in. It was around 2013, I think? After reading the manga, I was so unsatisfied that I tried to look for... stories that are, like, KHR. So, I discovered fanfics and fanfiction.net... I remembered shipping 1827, but learned that R27 is actually better, so I tried to avoid 1827 fics all together. One source of those R27 fics is metamorcy from FF.net, and... her fics are really great! Also, I got so invested in it that... Yeah, I remembered some of the characters' fandom short hands.
27 = Tsuna, R = Reborn, 18 = Hibari, D = Dino, 80 = Yamamoto, 59 = Gokudera. So, when shipping, it's easier to apply their shorthands, so it ends up like this: R27, D18, 8059, which is still my OTPs even now. (Also, when I'm stuck on traffic, I look at the car plates and try to decipher some shorthands lol.)
This fandom also inspired me to write fics because... at the time, there are very few R27 fics, which made me sad, tbh (now, it's on par with 1827... I think).
(Btw, RL sucks because Reborn is like, over his thirties already, and Lambo is, like, 5, so... eww. It's so disgusting. That's probably one of the most disgusting pairings that I've ever came across.)
...Most of my usernames at that time was KHR-related, like... Fiamma-del-Cielo or something... (Ugh... So much cringe.) Anyways, to the next fandom.

The next main fandom that I'm in was the PJO/HoO fandom. My friend actually introduced me to it, and... yeah, can't be avoided. I ship Percabeth, Liper, Frazel (which is, imo, the cutest and the most bland pairing ever), and... Jasico. Don't ask why Jasico. I mean, I was a Percico shipper until my friend kinda spoiled the ending of HoO for me, and I became a Solangelo shipper, but then... for some reason, I just thought that Jason and Nico will look good together, like... whut? Even now, it's one of my OTPs, but... I have no idea why I even shipped it in the first place, like... whut? Why? (I'm still bitter that Rick Riordan included Solangelo in The Trials of Apollo, which I still haven't read just because of that. I know, pathetic, right?)
Also, that same friend who inroduced me to PJO showed me a list of the possible fics that she wanted to read (it's a screenshot of fic recs from Tumblr, I think), and... I literally laughed out loud because... gods. She would have been scarred for life if she hadn't shown it to me! Because... It was smut. The fic rec was of smut fics. I hope she'll someday understand the pain of going through every tag possible to discover what every single one meant.

I'm going to give some honourable mentions now because the third main fandom that I'm in is the Phandom, so...
KnB - AoKise. MuraHimu. MidoTaka. I know, basic ships, right? I also ship Aomine with Momoi, btw. They look adorable. Also... KagaKuro. AkaKuro is the bane of my existence - very similar to 1827 in the KHR fandom. Also, this is the fandom where I learned that MPreg was actually a thing, so... yeah.
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu - Everyone ships KarmaNagi. Admit it. (Not really) When my cousins learned that I was actually reading Ansatsu Kyoushitsu fanfics, it was kinda awkward to just yes when they asked if I ship Nagisa with Kayano because... I don't ship it. Also, this is where I learned that people don't even bother to check the wiki if the name of the school is correct. Instead of "Kunugigaoka", it's "Kunigaoka" or "Kuninigoka" or something.
SnK - Ereri, obvs. Also, Rikasa.
DRRR! - Shizaya all the way! Though... my ship kinda hit an iceberg when I read the light novel because... they're literally fighting to the death. My ship hit the iceberg so hard that it's still under repair right now. I ship them, but not as hard. There's nothing romantic when they tried to kill each other in the last volume of the LN. (My favorite dj of this fandom is Aberrance. No smut, just fluff. It brought tears to my eyes.) Also, DRRR! is, like, one of the greatest anime ever, so... (One of my old friends actually reccomended this to me a long time ago, but I didn't find the animation appealing, so... until the story line. God damn it. I don't regret watching it.)

I've been to other fandoms for about a week until I find another one, so... yeah. Sorry for this long post.
