I'm getting tired of this war of hearts

Sarah Z usually does pop-culture and fandom type videos but her latest one is about capitalism and the way brands use their social media presence and advertising in 2018, it was really interesting and she delves quite deep into its history and made me thing about a lot of things. I'd recommend it and also would want to hear what other people think.

I have to share this video because it made me actually full on cry laugh. It's got some familiar faces like Tomska and Dodie but I think Reb makes it so damn funny.

I don't have much to say about the video itself except that I'm glad she took the break she needed, and I enjoyed how respectful and honest she was while still maintaining her brand of humour.

What I mainly took away from this is that the more youtubers I see taking breaks, announced or unannounced, and whether that becomes permanent or not, it's almost a necessity at this point to avoid the really bad, maybe even really public, burn outs or breakdowns, and to be able to maintain a career. It's a pattern I've at least seen with people who seem to actually be passionate creators rather than people grovelling for mostly money and fame. And I also think it just adds to the fact that youtube is such a shit place to create, whether that be the people on the platform or the platform itself, and while I think that breaks or burn outs and the like can be a natural part of the process as a creator feeling your way around what your creating, youtube is a bit of a cesspool of toxicity which just adds fuel to the fire. I do think people like Liza--or others who have taken breaks and honestly spoken about it like Elle Mills--speaking out is important and a good conversation to have, but it does shine a light on the fact that youtube is weird and unstable and often toxic.

I'm a big fan of Molly Burke and have been watching all her videos since the Shane Dawson series she was in last year. She has a lot of great content and I've learned so much about the blind community from her videos. She's so inspiring, and also just seems like a great person all around.

I came to post the video from today specifically, which made me cry and feel a lot of things. Trigger warning for anyone who deals with anxiety, specifically around attacks at large gatherings (which has been my main source of bad anxiety for the past few years, but I've started to conquer this year). The video ends fine - it turns out there was not actually an attack. But damn, hearing the story from her perspective, as not only a human being, but also with the addition of her being blind in this situation, is really intense; but there's also moments that restore faith in humanity, with the people who helped out, and it just made me feel a lot.

Here's the video if anyone's interested:

i haven't watched kingsely in so long, he basically dropped off the face of the earth and i didn't know he made a "comeback". I mean there's only 3 videos on his new channel but I came across this video. His thoughts are probably really popular amongst the youtube community and i think its worth checking out

Good on him and all of them, I was just reading The Guardian’s article and “specialist police spent two hours unsticking protestors from windows” made me snort. Also this guy looks how I feel when I actually think about it :snow:

I just discovered the channel Squirmy and Grubs a couple days ago and I wanted to share it here. I've been making my way through the videos from earliest to newest and am obsessed.

The channel is a man with SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) named Shane and his girlfriend Hannah. It's been so interesting to explore the relationship and normal daily life of people in an interabled relationship, and the videos are just so entertaining in general. They both have such great senses of humour and their humour is so compatible and it's just so lovely to see their love. I strongly recommend the channel for anyone who just wants some entertaining videos of two people very much in love, and also to get such positive exposure to an interabled relationship like theirs.

I'll just link the first video on the channel here (they pretty much just jump right into vloggy videos so you can watch any video really, but the beginning's a good place to start as any):

I also want to bring attention to the channel Special Books by Special Kids as this was the channel that led me to the Squirmy and Grubs channel a couple days ago (youtube randomly recommended me a video this channel did on Hannah and Shane, which then led me to their channel).

I've only watched the one on Hannah and Shane, and then the video I'm about to link below, but the reason I wanted to link this (aside from the channel being what looks to be a great organization) is because I wanted to share yet another way Youtube has completely fucked up. The video below explains it all (this is from a few months ago, but I'm pretty sure the issue has not been resolved), but basically Youtube turned off the comments on all videos on this channel because of policies on removing comments on videos involving children due to issues with pedophilia, etc. I think this has been mentioned before in the main thread in relation to Louise Pentland's videos, but as the video below explains, this issue is pretty devastating to this channel. The channel features people with disabilities and conditions and gives them a platform to communicate, and the comment section is very important to them because it's a place of positivity for these people. Here's the video, where they explain it way better than I could:

my favorite YouTubers include:

Daz Black - british comedian who does sketches on his main channel. they actually kinda remind me of Dan in that he plays all the characters and does minimal costuming. strays into the horror genre. i really LOVE his channel Daz Games where he does reactions to some rather odd videos and plays the wierdest games ever, but also some regular ones (fortnite, the sims, ect.)

Captain Sparklez - minecraft youtuber and car enthusiast and musician-y person. i love him lots. got into him for his minecraft videos, stayed for his second channel Jordan Reacts where he does Top 19 posts of different subreddits. he's just geniuely funny and adorable. i haven't checked out his vlogging channel or music channel. soz.

Chris Ramsey - magician and puzzle solver. every Wednesday he solves (or attempts on the rare occasion he fails) to solve a complicated tangible puzzle. usually very expensive and well made pieces. almost always level 8 or above (or the japanese equivalent). also does magic tricks and just seems really chill and cool.

Hannah Hart - i'm sure you know her. lesbian youtuber who is perfection and known for My Drunk Kitchen.

Try Guys - sure you know them too. love them loads.

Shane Dawson/Ryland Adams - i don't usually care for vloggers but these two are kinda good at it.

Cystik1 - Morgan is a youtuber who expierenced some massive growth when he did a review of the 5 Feet Apart trailer because he himself has cystic fibrosis. his channel is a very real look at his life with the disease and he is just a geniunely funny and sweet guy who knows who he is and what he wants to get out of his time on this earth. suffers from depression, body image issues and a few other things and is very real and frank about it. games alot. i follow him more for his tweets/insta, but he's a really great guy.

those are the youtubers i love alot. there are some people i'll watch one time or maybe do a little scroll through their videos, but these are the ones that i usually check out as soon as they upload something new. also love watching a good medical documentary on youtube as well.

I’m hoping to make a thread for this one, but he’s in the midst of a rebrand/reboot and if he’s planning to update his name, he hasn’t yet. For now he’s “x”, but had been PetesJams for about 8 years. Good friend of Gary C amongst others, he’s still in collabs on Gary’s and a few others’ channels, but has removed all his own old videos and posted the video below last Friday. The vibe gives a vague idea of the whole self he’s embracing (he did make a lovely Disney prince, but he describes his older stuff as rose-tinting himself - he’s been on Twitch under PetesJams for a few months too, lovely fella through and through).

Really funny video, really honest, a little dark. I've really lost some sense of time since early 2020, I don't think I even realized he'd disappeared for that long, or that weird drama/"tea" channels were using him for content in the time since? Anyway it was interesting to hear him discuss how strange it is to see people making fake/overly dramatic content about him get more views than his actual videos and how people talk about/to him online since he's been gone. And how he talked about some of his MH stuff hit close to home, probably for a lot of people re: 2020. And he's just really funny dammit, I've missed him.

He said something I found very interesting: "If I leave [the internet], Drew Monson is up for grabs. People can make up their own Drew Monson story if I don't tell it." He then continued to talk about how detached he felt from the comments he got and how it didn't feel like they were talking about him.

It must be such a weird experience seeing others speculate or comment on your life in such a public way. And either feeling like you are failing them for not living up to this pretend person in their head, or becoming resentful because they are wrong. I don't know, but it made me have a little think.

I’m not familiar with Drew Monson at all, but this video was really funny and weird and sincere. I was really struck by the way he described the difficulty of creating during the pandemic and just what a strange strange time it has been.

Wow, thanks @fancybum for sharing this video. I didn’t know who Drew Monson was but I’ll definitely be looking into more of his videos, I really enjoyed his sense of humour and a lot of what he said, while being very relatable to what happened the last two-ish years with the Dan hiatus (sorry, I know this is the other youtuber thread but the comparison is too perfect), also hit very much on a personal level for me too. I wrote down a lot of notes watching the video but this is what I could wrangle into something kind-of legible.

It was really interesting hearing a very personal perspective of how parasocial relationships can be perceived by, and affect, the creator rather than only seeing it from a fan perspective like we frequently read here. Especially from someone who did, in fact, completely drop off the face of the (public social media) Earth for a whole year. How even kind, well-meaning fan messages could have a negative impact on him was something I wouldn't have thought of.

I’ll admit that recently I’ve been knee deep in reading old dnp threads here when I’ve got nothing to do and I read a discussion in one thread criticising Dan’s decision to delete old videos. The part in Drew's video about being so removed from his previous self and his old content to the point he didn’t even recognise it as himself was something that resonated with me.

The quote of it being “Like an ex being like ‘I miss you’ from high school. It’s like ‘do you?’ Coz I’m not him.” Was a really interesting perspective on this from the creator side of things as well. As a YouTuber, your content is there permanently unless you choose to remove it. So, for new viewers especially, there isn’t much of a divide between the content produced most recently and the stuff uploaded years ago that you may no longer gel with. I recently saw video footage of myself at 21 and that really helped me understand the dissociation some YouTubers must feel between content they put out when they were (usually) quite young and when they start to mature a bit more, which will obviously be an ongoing process. I'm honestly surprised mass deletion of videos isn't a lot more common. It’s not natural to be constantly faced with footage of your past self in the way YouTube has made possible. There are real people you can watch as their lives unfold over the last ~15 years. That’s absolutely crazy when you think about it!

Final point I found particularly interesting was the bit about becoming best friends with yourself, especially the quote “I just want too shoot the entire movie of my life into your head, that’s the only way you’re going to get this”. This part hit really hard for me. The idea that you need to become your own best friend because you are the only person who has experienced exactly what you’ve been through and can be guaranteed to be there for you 100%, while kind of dark, is also something worth thinking about.

lollll re: the deleting videos thing. That convo has probably happened a few times by now, but I definitely remember the time Dan deleted a bunch of vids including his collab with crabstickz/Chris which I took very personally lmao, I was definitely on the "how dare you delete the past" side of things. I've maybe chilled out about that a bit because if I'm honest, I would totally delete old/unflattering content of myself if I had any out there in such a public way (hell I'd probably delete a bunch of my old posts off this godforsaken website if I could lmao), but then again I don't make a living having my face/voice on the internet, which makes it slightly different? ..Maybe?

I've been watching old Bo Burnham things lately, and he's got a perspective on 'deleting the past' that I really appreciate and mostly agree with (even though he himself has deleted some old videos even in just the past few months lol):

This whole interview is a great watch:
But I'll just quote some relevant parts:
12:15 “I posted a lot of YT videos when I was 16/17/18/19, funny songs—“funny edgy songs”—which like the edgy comedy of a 16-year old in 2006 does not really square with the cultural moment of 2018, or square with me personally now. So I’ve tried to be pretty transparent with that, and say I’m sort of living out loud, like a lot of us are, and I’m growing, and I’m changing.”

12:50 "I try not to think about the, sort of like.. “me”. I think everyone has this pressure to sort of think of their own brand and their own narrative and where they’re going and what they represent. Focusing on that too much for me has just lead to anxiety and sort of oblivion, and it’s much better for me to take moments as they come, try to be forgiving of myself-”

13:25 “So that’s the balance. We should absolutely be holding people accountable, but can we also allow young people—and everyone—to live and fail and learn? I don’t know what the balance is.”

13:45 “I apologize for being an idiot at 16. Oh no, I totally do. I’m not gonna delete the videos because I feel like that’s me pretending like I wasn’t that. And I want to be an example for people to show, like, ‘you can start here and get there’.
14:10 “I’ll disavow literally anything I did like… 8 months ago”
I don't know, I'm still mad about Jimmy0010 deleting all his videos (he can't stop me from rewatching Cereal Time every so often though!!11), but I guess it's just an awkward thing about digital "content", you don't own it unless you've downloaded it or something (I mean even then you don't "own" it but you know what I mean). And also it's Jimmy's content (ie. his life lol) to do with as he likes, sooo who am I to feel any ownership over it..... and YET. Yeah, idk, it's weird.

But back to Drew, yeah this:

That's also something I wouldn't have considered. Even just sending nice thoughts to someone could be like... pressure to feel better than they do or something. Hmmm, Much To Think About. But anyway I really hope he's enjoying his made up job at the aquarium.
