Honestly? Me.

I wasn't too bothered by the video. The way I see it is that Dan knew there weren't many memes this year, but this video's a good way to do a sort of "year in review". And as long as he isn't dramatically screeching my ears off, I'm thoroughly pleased.

It was less over-acted than previous years and also a bit more honest. He mentioned feeling good about himself and those ripped jeans, shaded Shane/Marcus, noted that Phil took the donut pic, and if he made any comments that seemed particularly critical of his fan base, then... he's not wrong? Fandoms can be invasive - his in particular - and if anyone has the right to get a bit feisty about it, it's Dan. All that said, I didn't actually see anything especially negative in what he said.

It was slow in parts and a bit unsure of its own tone, but oddly, this video left me with a calmer feeling than I usually get from Dan videos. So, if that's any sign of videos to come this year (lol not with TIIT, but one can hope), then I'm fairly positive.

 I remember reading that reddit thread when it was on the front page.

I liked the video! But it's also morning here and I had a cup of tea with it and I know that you can skip 5 seconds in the video with the right arrow key when it gets too much with the persona/acting :D

I know he said that the wall recess is a "gel fireplace" but man, if it wasn't for that bright red mirror, it would be such a sad background/room. Grey walls, couch and pillows? Also, deffo two apartments cause who would not learn how to switch on the fireplace when it's winter...

I might have to save the video for later to watch with my partner (who is totally not a fan  ) but....

I need to know if I'm the only one who keeps misnaming the tour as Interactive Idiots in my head?

(Also to the person a while back who shared their ideas for the JAusten AUs - yes I agree!)

citizen_erased wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2018 12:33 am I enjoyed that video. My memory and sense of time are absolute shit, so for me there was a lot of "wait that happened last year???". Plus I didn't join this forum until halfway through the year and I'm not active in the phandom anywhere else so I had no idea about memes or edits or videos. The Pennywise video really cracked me up, I'd never seen that before

I can see how some people find this version of Dan really annoying, but personally, I really liked it. I really appreciate how he's not all "I love you guys! You're amazing! Love you forever uwu!" at us but basically just goes "all you fuckers had this coming and you knew it" it's a different way of treating your audience and I, for one, love it <3
See, theoretically, I do like that? The parts that cracked me up involved some more genuine aspects of that; that week in March, for one. I also had hoped he'd mention his tweet during the Bahamas stuff where he basically said we needed to accept there are things we don't need to know. That feels honest.

But the over the top reaction to things like the pastel videos and wholesome howell and the donut photo, essentially any time something originated from Dan himself without fans dictating it and then Dan makes a big deal about how people react (when it's quite obvious that reaction was the full intent) annoys me. Not majorly, and it's something I fully expect, I just can't bring myself to find much entertainment in him acting exasperated by fan edits of things Dan 100% knew would be edited. It muddles down the actual organic ones to me. (Of which there were few this year for Dan and many for Phil.)
that's how i feel about it as well -- i'm not really, really annoyed but...a bit...and definitely more than last year. the problem is, i can't give any constructive criticism -- i genuinely can't say how i'd have wanted this video to go so that i wouldn't feel this way. if he were leaving aside cringe and exasperation, i think it would break the fourth wall to the audience too much to be comfortable. a brutally honest "i hoped this would happen and it did *evil mastermind laugh*" would be funny as heck, but probably... not on brand... or a good idea... also, see above. like, dan's tone and the "narrative" of the video actually really ensure that the wall to the audience is upheld in a way (in the sense that we know dan is not constantly lurking in phandom spaces and laughing about memes about himself)?

idk maybe the series was just only ever meant to be a oneshot because i genuinely liked the first one a lot and thought it was hilarious.
thank's you were great

Warning: negativity. Meh. I can tell he put a lot of effort into it, so I feel a bit bad for not liking it very much. I definitely agree that it was more of a year in review and less meme-y than the previous two installments, which is why I personally liked those two better. I didn't mind the length of the video but well... quality over quantity. I'd rather have a shorter yet funnier video and I find that some segments could've been left out or shortened, while there were also other things that I wish had made it into the video or were discussed for longer.

I wouldn't say the DINOF persona annoys me, in fact most of the time I find him very funny, relatable and enjoyable to watch. However, in some cases (like in this video) he just comes across as tired, dejected and unenthusiastic to me, which kinda spoils my mood for the video from the beginning. The video also shows that is he somewhat out of touch with his community, which makes me wish he was a bit more active on Tumblr (because of its easy navigation and variety of fan content), by which I don't mean reblogging random shitposts but more like what Markiplier and Jacksepticeye do: checking their tags, reblogging fan art, gif sets, edits, memes, text posts etc. I feel like that would give him a better general idea of "what's hot and what's not" throughout the year, making it easier for him to make this kind of video and so he doesn't have to rely so much on just what people send him. (Yes, I know people put "phan stuff" in the tags as well but that didn't stop him a few years ago.)

The video was everything I was expecting (and 10 min more). I agree that is was more Dan's 2017 in memes than Top Dan memes, but I think that's fine. I liked this more than last year (partly because his hair was truly awful in last year's video, dear lord) and it made me laugh and smile several times. I have to rewatch it when I'm not half asleep but my first impression was 7/10 would watch again.

My favourite parts of these are always when he drags his fans. We always deserve it and lowers the fourth wall just the right amount. I think he could do it more but there's always those who take everything he says very literally (the ones who thought he got genuinely upset at the memes last year for example)

I have no issues with the dinof persona. I know that dinof is different from Dan in many ways and don't have a problem separating them. I like when the softer, more sincere Dan shines through but it's nothing I expect. Loud yelling Dan on dapg is far worse than dinof imo, but that's just because I hate loud noises.

I get why he wants to end it at three, he probably don't want to drag it out like isg that seems to go in forever.

Hey! I'm not sure how many of you know about The Phandom Games already, but since we're experiencing the January drought, I think some would be interested in this!

The Phandom Games in a completely free and online Tumblr event for everyone who likes Deppy. Think of Hunger Games, art competition, PBB and random YouTube challenges combined. And ofc all :deppy: themed :tu:

There will be over 100 players, who'll be sorted into 5 teams, and you'll compete together against other teams. There will be two 48-hour rounds (+final round) which each feature different challenges (examples of the stuff we've done before: "Create phanart using a beverage as paint (coffee, juice, milk...)", "Make as big squareflake as possible", "Write about your experience as a phannie in other language than English", or "Make a picture collage that shows the contrast of Dan and Phil's aesthetics").
Winners get warm virtual handshakes, lots of glory, and an opportunity to become the next Game Makers. (I absolutely recommend this for everyone who thinks they are competitive... the Games will truly take it to another level :D )

We've had a wide range of players, younger and older (20+ & even 30+), many very talented writers and artists, and people who've never considered themselves part of the fandom, but have still enjoyed the experience.
I've personally made lots of new friends from all over the world, and have heard the same from other players of the past games too!

The next Games are the Winter (mini) Edition, running from February 2nd to February 11th (the first round & the final round are during weekend, if that helps!). Sign ups opened on the 12th, and will be open till January 26th, but there is a limited amount of spots and they have been going quickly!

Why... why aren't we all talking more about this photo? I don't understand how it came into being. It looks like someone's photoshopped his features onto a bigger face. Can someone who's met him IRL weigh in - does he film videos and take pics from a deceptive angle and his face is actually a lot rounder than it looks (no shade, I have a round face)?!?!?! Please someone help I think I'm having a breakdown over this photo.

Also I feel personally victimised by Dan using a Reddit thread that I read and contributed to in his video.

I honestly don't know how this photo came about because it doesn't look like he's pushing his face into his chin and there is no way he has any excess skin there to make it look like that. When I saw it though I was kinda glad he posted it, it made someone like me, who has a round face also, feel weirdly better about myself. I guess for me, it was a relief to see that even the most handsome of people have terrible photos sometimes.

I finally watched the video and I read the opinions about it in this thread. I think it was a nice video, typical Dan humor, I liked it although I don't mind that he won't do more (to me it seemed like this was supposed to be just 1 video in 2015 and not a trilogy)

Also a bit of a rant:

I need to say that I feel like people have irrealistic expectations sometimes. Dan and Phil do have online personas and their videos are scripted - I don't see the problem with that, because they aren't those shy nerdy guys with a webcam and 150 subscribers that they used to be 8-10 years ago. We can't expect them to behave like that because that era is long gone, Youtube is not their hobby anymore, it's their (part-time) job and it's inevitable that they changed a lot in the meanwhile. For a matter of fact, I don't expect any celebrity to be 100% honest and give themselves all the time, they'd burn out instantly. Also it's hard to be yourself when no matter what you do, nothing is enough. D&P offer their hand and people want their whole arm. We can't deny that some people often go waay overboard. There needs to be boundaries (and a video like this is a perfect opportunity to discreetly call out some invasive behaviour, because what else can Dan do about it without alienating anyone, than present it as a bunch of cynical jokes)

Half of the phandom is incredibly creepy. Let's be honest it's not like Dan only saw those memes that he then put into the video. Tumblr is full of porn fanfiction and edits, creepy theories, and so on. If I had to deal with that while I was trying to build my own career outside Youtube (that my teenager fans don't even want to acknowledge) I wouldn't visit Tumblr very often either and I'd drag my fans (lovingly... or not... who knows, that's why it's worth it to be ironic all the time) in a video too

To be honest, I don't think this was a callout video any more than last year's was or the year before. I think Dan enjoys the fact that memes are part of his brand and this year there happened to not be so many of them that popped up organically - as opposed to 2016 and 2015, where there actually were things that happened entirely outside of Dan's control.

The only real callout part would be 'that week in march' and honestly - I hope Dan took away as much of a lesson as we all did with that one. Don't tell your rabid obsessive audience of millions to remind you of something in five months if you don't genuinely want to be reminded of it in five months. It was Dan's choice to mention it, Dan's choice to build anticipation (because - as he said - he did intend on later explaining) and then Dan who at the given time frame of five months wasn't ready yet and put it off another two months. I understand why, and I'm not mad about it, and I think it gave us a good reminder that not everything Dan wants to say is a project and some things do just have to do with him as a person. But at the end of the day: it wouldn't have been an exciting mystery to us for half the year if Dan hadn't told us to ask him later in the first place. I veer on the side of treating him like an adult who sometimes makes his own bed and then has to lie in it.

(Which isn't to say phandom isn't invasive, I'm also not going to treat fandom like it never does anything wrong. But in this instance, we were invasive because we were literally invited to be. Essentially I think my point is that this doesn't need to be so polarizing, the March situation was a combination of us being overly enthusiastic and Dan opening a door he later wished he hadn't opened.)

I think I had the same reaction that a lot of people here did which was...I liked it?? I think?? Maybe??

I’ve been chewing on it, and I think the reason why I feel this way is because the way Dan presents himself in these videos is different from the way I see him, like, it’s still him but viewed through a different lense. I think the dinof persona is so hard for some of us to swallow, not because it’s totally fake, but because it seems to pendelum between to opposing personalities. The self-deprivation, downer, low self esteem, dark humor Dan vs the Dan that is passionate about using his platform for good and cares about his fans and is genuinely enthusiastic about stuff (guild wars reddit posts melted my heart, honestly). They are both Dan, but they seem so contradictory from an outsiders pov.

So, from my POV, I look at Dan and see someone who is very talented, hilarious, someone who is a positive influence to so many people and who cares a lot about his platform and voice and using it in a good way. Not to say I don’t see his faults too, but overall I view him in a positive light. So in videos like these, where he highlights his low self esteem and looks at himself and his year through a “woe is me” lense, it leaves me feeling very meh, and makes me want to reach through my screen and snap him out of it.

Agree with you on both points! He's not doing his 'look how many chins I can have' pose, it's literally just like... extra face that's come from nowhere. It definitely makes me feel better about all the candid photos I've seen of myself that have made me go 'ok I know my face is round but it's not THAT round is it!?'

Belated Memes video reaction: it was okay. If I was new in the fandom, I would think that Dan is a prick who takes his every sneeze too seriously, making a 30-min video recap of his year. But yeah, it's his way to be funny. Dan was enthusiastically banging on (however fragile) fourth wall in that video, playing with our and his own comfort zones, but keeping it mostly safe.

I want to agree that the video felt more honest as he acknowledged certain events (that he had glazed over in liveshows) having a bigger impact.. but with an online personality everything becomes a "thing" and it's so hard to evaluate the degree of importance of each individual moment.

End of the video felt weirdly defensive with the -accept me for who I am- message. Hope one day he lets go of thinking of himself as sarcastic edge lord and listens to Phil when he calls him a "soft lad". ;)

I just watched the video and I'm the most sad about the fact that he didn't mention DanielDreamX and his Ýoutube channel.

The whole time I had a feeling that I've seen funnier edits of things he showed, but they usually included Phil (or were phan-heavy otherwise). Was it just me or did Dan avoid edits that included Phil? ...Tho now that I think about it he always had and I don't know what I was expecting.

I got irritated by his mood also. He just seemed so...defensive, like he had a big armor on? Just do what you do Dan, you don't own us any explanations.

I'm extremely tired, so sorry if this doesn't make any sense.

My waffle on this whole thing is that I think he is again just reiterating what he's said before - he has limits and boundaries and he'll give us what he's comfortable with.
Phil was a big part of this video so I don't think he was avoiding things as much as just trying to keep certain things private or out of the conversation. It's not new for people who have watched dapg, dinof, and AP to know that Dan and Phil mention each other constantly but for casual viewers of just dinof I wonder how they perceive it?

as far as defensive- I got that vibe from 2016 Memes but I didn't get it from this video at all. In fact, he felt more open to me this video and stating that he's not going to be what other people want is a mature thing to say- I like this Dan.

Don’t worry it all makes perfect sense and I agree, especially about the armor. I wanted to add something about that last night, because it does feel like he hasn’t shed that (the armor = his old branding), despite the readings by Phil the Amazing in Predicting Dan’s Future :crystalball:

Also agree that you would learn to light the fireplace if you lived/hung out there. The snug is apparently not for snuggling. Still appreciate the irony of the laptop fire.

delayed response to dan's video - i liked it, but i didn't love it? i also find him over-the-top in these videos, and i'm glad that this seems to be the last one, but i'm not going to complain about a half-hour long main channel video from him. i like when he gets snarky with his audience, because it always feels like good-natured banter to me, but like. he was absolutely encouraging memes and edits with some of those posts and it does annoy me a bit when he acts overly exasperated at some of them. it was still genuinely sweet to hear him talk about his intentions last year and opening up about his mental health, though, and i think that's what i ultimately took away from the video.
