That's right, it's the return of the In Depth Bants holiday pop-up shop!

Much like last year, this Redbubble store will be up from today through Dec 30.

And this isn't just for us! Just like last year, we're splitting proceeds 50/50 with our faves at Phandom Gives!

Want to help, but don't want to buy anything? We've set up a paypal donation link right here.

Thank you and happy holidays to everyone from IDB 🎄

Love this topic title @kavat , such an adorable moment which Dan characteristically immediately attempted to counteract with sassy bantz. But we know he meant it really. :tu:

Something I noticed while looking at the viewcounts from PINOF 10 on SocialBlade (over 1M this morning yay!), is that not only did AmazingPhil get a modest sub boost (989 since Friday), but Dan's main channel seems to have gone up by 617, which is interesting as he had been in the red for a month (and probably longer as he hasn't been uploading), and the gaming channel actually increased the most with 1017!

Obviously in the grand scheme of things this isn't that many subs, however, that's still a lot of people in 2018 to be motivated enough after watching two lads being random for 10 minutes to subscribe to that channel AND the related channels. Also with the 1k bump on the gaming channel, I wonder how many were casual fans already who just weren't subbed, or what? Like who were these people? How many were just totally new fans who randomly watched this PINOF and were like ok cool! Subscribed! To all their channels! Or were a lot of them more casual fans who, after The Big Vid of the year, decided they should actually sub? Or maybe some were old phandom members who watched it out of nostalgia and then resubbed to their various channels?

Maybe I'm just old, but it seems odd to me that someone might see PINOF 10 and decide to sub? Like sure some moments were really hilarious to me, but how many are funny outside of the context of their history/personalities/personas/video references/running jokes? Maybe I'm underestimating their appeal, and I know a lot of people did originally sub because of past pinofs, so who knows...

I feel the same way! As an experiment, I asked a friend who had never watched deppy to watch PINOF(1) and PINOF10 back to back and send me her thoughts. Here is her texts to me:

-"I'm watching the first video. And uh. What am I seeing?" (Me: what do you think you are seeing? Her: "I literally do not know")
-"Ah. End tackle."
-"Eeww the licking why"
- "From those two videos...I don't get their channel"
-"Christ my youtube recommendations will be a billion recommendations of this forever won't it?"

So, yea, it really is hard to understand PINOF10 without context especially given how it pretty much still follows the random editing style of 2008-2010 but with a ton more inside jokes. I have trouble seeing how you would sub based on that.

That being said, I was subbed to Amazingphil in 2009 and subbed to Dan from the original PINOF so clearly that random humor without knowing anything about Dan was fun (fun fact, I recently went back into my youtube comment history and found my comment on the original PINOF. It was "Your twink boyfriend is really cute" OMG seriously, Past!Im_New_Here, you have been a terrible shipper since the beginning.)

I would also venture looking down at the comments, a lot of the comments are "I don't really watch your videos anymore but I always come back for these!" so I suspect some people re-subbed after that.

Aww it sounds like Dan and Phil are helping Martyn and Cornelia move house. I swear that’s Dan’s “yep” in one of her stories. Please follow suit boys.

Phil is confusing everyone, since Dan said liveshow today. :/

Oh whoop just as I submitted that:

I don't think they're moving house, in one of her IG stories from Sweden last week she said she was packing up stuff from her parents house and then would have to go home and pack up the kitchen since they're renovating it.

Ahh I'm sad as I was really hoping for a livestream today :( Ah well, at this point I was kinda expecting it, so at least I can now go down the shops without fear of missing them. PINOF made me crave more content I guess...

Thank you for conducting a case study on your friend for us! Yeah I definitely think that nowadays that kind of thing is much more like "what am I watching?" and less "lolrandom! so relatable and quirky!" and so as fans of them as people and creators we enjoy it, but it's much less likely to attract a new audience since just, the tastes of the day are different, and people are looking for a different kind of content. There are also more expectations of being able to watch a YT video and understand what it's about and who the people are.

Oh my god!!!! Well that is interesting to note, I always figured most of his initial subs were from that! Cool to know you were one! I feel like if I had seen PINOF back in 2009 when I was a huge teenaged vlogger fangirl, I also would've subbed to Dan, especially if I already liked Phil's humour. But as an adult in 2018, I'd probably be like "well that's nice then... glad they're having fun I guess..." and then move along. However, in context they are quite fun, and I can appreciate the nostalgia in them and the sacred ritual they've become, and I love that they're a testament to the longevity of relationships formed over the internet. Like really they seem more like a symbol than anything else, you know?
A symbol of love... :happytears:

With the liveshow on hold until tomorrow, now seems like as good a time as any for some promotion and in depth data. :D

So you've seen the results of the 2018 Dan and Phil Survey, but you still want more? Send us a request for additional analysis!

Want to see what the relationship between answers to two questions looks like? We can do that!
Example: What does the relationship between the age and gender identity of the survey participants look like?
Click the image below to open an interactive version of the plot.
Image
Want to know how the answers to a question have changed from survey year to survey year? No problem!
Example: How have the answers to the question “Do you read Phanfiction?” changed over the years?
Click the image below to open an interactive version of the plot.
Image
Want to apply a filter to the responses to a question? We're on it!
Example: What does the age distribution of the IDB Phandom look like in comparison to the rest of the Phandom?

I also took the liberty of doing some analysis based on the posts below:

wow i love the survey, so much detailed insight... also the majority of the phandom is lgbt+ and thats a very interesting shift over the years, one that could only have been fostered by how loving and safe dnp and the phandom have been :happytears:

Some of the survey results I found really interesting:

17% of fandom identifies as bi, 15% as straight. 35% marked multiple options apply, which I think can at least rule out straight - so essentially phandom is queer as fuck.

526 people (7%) of those who took the survey have started an online relationship through phandom.

44.6% think they're in a long term relationship, 21% think they're platonic, 18% don't believe they have enough evidence to determine, and 7.6% percent prefer not to answer.

In terms of Dan and Phil's individual sexuality: more people prefer not to label Dan than to label Phil, more people think Dan is bisexual/queer than think Phil is, and almost twice as many people think Phil is gay than think Dan is... but more people also think Phil is straight than think Dan is (though, over all, not very many people think either of them is straight. - 1.2% for Dan and 3.6% for Phil).

I can't wait to see how some of these stack up against 2017 and 2015 results.

The other crazy thing to me was merch. Personally, I don't have any D&P merch, and the only YT merch I own I've bought at VidCons as mementos, as well as my parents getting me Nerdfighters/DFTBA merch as presents when I was a kid, so the fact that 52.7% of respondents bought TABINOF (and an additional 15.6% getting it as a gift), 50.5% owning a copy of DAPGO, and 51.7% having bought something from the Dan And Phil Shop (and probably 56.8% owning something from it based upon the satisfaction question) is so surprising to me! I don't have any other data to compare it to, but the conversion rate of "fan" into paying customer seems really high! I would be interested in a general "Have you ever spent money on a Dan and/or Phil product or event?" question as well, or at least pulling from this data how many respondents answered yes to any of the tour/book/merch questions.

Another interesting factor is age, since 15-year-olds were the highest responding age group, so I wonder whose money the younger fans were spending on D&P, and whether they responded as buying things themselves or getting them as gifts (like if they paid for stuff with their allowance/birthday money/babysitting money/etc. or if they just asked their parents if they could pay for it). Also with age, if you are a teenager living at home, supported by your parents, and going to school, you probably have less things to spend your money on than older people paying rent/insurance/grocery bills/utilities/gas, hence why people with younger audiences can tend to make more money.

Questions I will never get the answer to: why did Dan include songs that were not even released when ii was happening on the tour playlist? What is he doing?

Yea, I am the same age as Phil and I was an "adult" when PINOF came out (so I guess I was 22? yea that sounds right omg I am dying and gettingold), with like a house and career and such, but I was still a baby who was into randomness on YT back then, as was the style. Like I was a hardcore nerdfighter in those days, and PINOF was very much a flirty gay version of the random style of Q&A's that Hank did.

Also, back then there weren't many queer *out* big youtubers. There was Tyler Oakley...and... umm... I can't really think of any one else that was out yet (Shane Dawson was not out yet even to himself at all, My Drunk Kitchen wasn't making videos yet, no male beauty vloggers I can think of, etc...) So many many of us just subbed based on fit possibly queer youtubers based on PINOF chemistry alone (also if you want to see the original comments on the video in a disorganized way and be a creepster you can go to Hadzy analytics and sort by date) but warning there's a lot of phil saying he's not gay in the comments (although also not saying he's straight) and a lot of people just being like "oh you two are so sexy"...

Sorry I don't want to derail from the phandom survey analysis because HOLY HECK is that good data fun.

The playlist kept getting updated throughout the tour. They added new songs, and the playlist is the one they ended up playing in Brazil.

Some of Dan's twitter replies earlier were so great.
and man, pulling no punches on this one:
It totally reminds me of when he wanted to complain about the sound guy during dapgoose, and Phil wouldn't let him name and shame.

I’m loving the data analysis @itasca00!

It makes sense to me that the phandom feels older than the overall measure, as I spend most of my fandom time on IDB where the age range doesn’t reflect the same curve as the phandom generally.

I’m guessing in 2015 ‘prefer not to label’ wasn’t an option on the survey?

I had my mom watch pinof 10 with me when she visited because I love it so much. She could see why I found them funny despite not getting the references. She seemed more amused by the first half than the second,

I imagine there are lots of people who watch Dan and Phil occasionally but just hadn’t subscribed until after pinof (or any other popular video like the mukbang). I do that with other channels: watch them sometimes if they pop up, but only subscribe after some video I really like comes out and I realize I don’t want to miss anything.

This is entirely unrelated to everything that’s been discussed today but there is one single thing about PINOF10 I don’t like

And it’s when Dan says “David Attenborough is quaking in his grave”

Granddaddy Nature is not dead, Daniel, he’s an immortal being!! :wahh:

(But seriously it makes me shiver with discomfort a little because he is hella old)

One thing that stuck out to me in PINOF was when Dan grabbed a handful of those sheets and said, "When was the last time you washed these??"

They're really not using that "bedroom" much, huh

It's the 10th but the II dvd set is still set to "pre-order now" on the merch store - and you can't add any other items when you pre-order it. Hello Phil, I would like to give you money, please let me order the dvd and a sweater in one order.
Or am I too stupid to use the store?

Lol, I really thought I was Mandela effecting on this one, but I'm glad to hear it was actually Dan who was misremembering things. I was like "I can't remember David Attenborough dying, but since Dan said so, it must be true".

I'm excited to start my morning now by listening to the II playlist! I'm still pretty sure they played songs that aren't on the list when I first saw the show in May. Not that I'm missing Swish Swish or Look What You Made Me Do...

They were on the interval list! I'm glad they left them out, because it's actually a really good list otherwise! My taste in music overlaps a lot with Dan's so I'll probably listen to this quite a bit.

Hadzy is an interesting site, I looked up Pinof 1 and it’s funny to see the reactions to the randomness and to Dan. Even Gary C is there. Can’t see which ones Phil’s replying to, but he answers a few.

Happy II release day, let’s hope they talk about it in the live show and then maybe apologise for the fact that people (like me) who have ordered it from their official shop haven’t even had a dispatch email yet! Not that I’m bitter about it (not much).

oh yeah that part! it was like last year's when dan said the same thing, except this year he was more blunt in tone and seemed like a wink-wink-nudge question.

Whenever I've pre-ordered CD's they've always dispatched like 2 days after official release. Shipping from the UK also somehow takes longer to arrive to Sweden than when I order from the US. It's annoying as hell.
