I thought Dan did really well!! I liked how some of the comedy came through in the Stand Up comedy style. It was a sweet and hilarious story.
The only thing I’m salty about is that this totally could have been a dinof/ main channel video. Honestly he could still upload it as one, for all of the people who won’t see this performance. It’s a great life update post-BIG

It would have been weird for Phil to just stand there and react or whatever. And think it would have been strange if the first joint thing we got was a stage performance at Vidcon.
I agree with that. I don't think this particular story would have been better with Phil. I think probably what happened is that Vidcon wanted them both but Phil doesn't enjoy things like this as much (which we've seen him admit before) and Dan was happy with the chance to test out some stage skills solo. There may have also been an element of not wanting their duo 'comeback' to happen in that format.

Obviously, I would have preferred seeing Dan and Phil get up there and do something together - I always prefer them together if I have an option. But for this story, Phil would have been fairly pointless, and I'm still happy to see Dan trying to get back in the dinof zone.

I wouldn't rule out it being the next dinof video anyway, tbh. In the scope of his millions of subscribers/viewers, most people won't have been there live/aren't dedicated enough enough to have hunted down footage of him there. I think he could recycle it.

I haven’t watched any of the VidCon content (yet) but from what I’ve read, it seems they are very much happy and confident about their content, which is so nice to see after the hiatus :) This year I’ve been thinking about their careers a lot because it’s very interesting to compare them to the people around me, and also try to find inspiration for my own life decicions. And tbh I didn’t really think they’d be making content again. But it seems that Dan’s video really was the one big obstacle (aka main reason for the hiatus). It feels weird to now know it was all mostly because of that. It really wasn’t an 1D type of a break...
kavat wrote: Sun Jul 14, 2019 11:28 am And Dan shouting "Where my lesbians at?" at the beginning was great, they really are aware of their queer audience by now
:D Yep...
I’ve been loving the recent shout outs to lesbians. I feel like Dnp have been very aware and inclusive for years now. We’ve got all kinds of formless blob -talk, which has ofc been heartwarming, and Dan mentioning trans rights and all that. Very, very good. But as a lesbian I’ve felt very valid and supported by my biggest idols since they started saying it constantly :D It actually feels quite affirming. Thanks Deppy <3

I loved Dan's Night of Awesome piece. It can be good to read a couple pages of commentary here first to get all possible critcisms and negative reactions out of the way. I'm one of those who, while I enjoy the bants, will always like Dan's solo content best, so this was pure pleasure. I thought he did great with the format and I can see him doing more stand-up style performances in future.

The bit about his mum was lovely. She seems like such a nice person (which you would expect, really, given she has such nice sons). Such a nice picture of her too; I, at least, have seen only a scant few photos of her before. That Dan is mentioning her more often now helps convey his new comfort and openness about his life (without really breaching anyone's privacy, which is great).

I also enjoyed Dan's subtle shoutout to his brother Adrian. Dan carbo-loaded on sweet potatoes, and anyone who has paid attention to Adrian's vegan cooking tutorials knows that they are the main staple of his cuisine; Adrian has said that he could just eat a sweet potato for dinner. (As someone who has made and enjoyed several of his recipes, I agree that sweet potatoes are a great ingredient to build a meal around.)

It still feels as though we are on some alternate timeline--I still get a visceral jolt when I hear Dan call himself a big queer or Phil state that he's gay. It'll be interesting to be able to look back at this time in six months or so after having processed how everything changed. :rainbow: :lilheart: :rainbowtears:

^ Same with the reading comments before. I just watched it and he did great, big agree that this was ideal solo comedy. I just hope he made a sizable donation to his chosen charity. I only just heard the “I am baby” meme the other day and unfortunately it was in the form of spam comments in one of the live-streams (do young people only speak in memes?) so I was already very over it, but Dan made it work in context. And heck yeah to absolutely owning being queer. I also hope people can finally accept that he’s using the term gay to describe himself.

Very excited for the podcast, the road trip and I guess the VidCon Now thing (keeping my expectations low there). Last night I was wondering why D&P like Vegas enough to go a third time. At first it seems very not them, but once I thought about it, it kinda makes sense. Phil loves playing for prizes, there’s alcohol, buffets, shows and sexy entertainment (though Dan has said he hates the open options at a buffet and actually converted Phil to his side in the space of a min, come on Phil stand your ground! Plus they’ll undoubtedly go to fancy restaurants instead). I’ve only been once as a pre-teen with my parents just as an overnight stop between national parks, so I only got to enjoy a buffet and a walk down the strip. Still of all the places to travel in the world or even the states, that just doesn’t make the list for me. I wouldn’t mind catching Cirque du Soleil sometime when it’s traveling though. They went once didn’t they?

As someone who actually lives in vegas, I could see how it is fun to go every couple of years. There is (in most cases) always something new. In the past two years alone, we've gotten a new arena, one of the casinos just opened a huge esports lounge, way too many new restaurants, stuff like that. Even though I don't expect deppy to leave the radius of the strip and do anything super active, there are a bunch of great hiking trails too!! Vegas is more than gambling and shows lol :ribena:

I am here at VidCon but watched the livestream from my hotel for reasons. I thought he did an outstanding job and commanded the stage! I think that he is so comfortable in the spotlight and he just beams with confidence.

On a slightly different topic, and I am not sure if I should mention this, but the interviewer who was with Phil interviewed John Green the next day and made a slightly dismissive comment (imo) about the questions she got for Phil. She said, paraphrasing, "I'm seeing such a difference in the creator track questions from the community questions. I did an interview yesterday and all people wanted to know was what kind of socks he was wearing". I was like, um....that's a THING. I don't expect her to have a deep knowledge of everyone she interviews and to watch all of Phil's videos, but I just found that to be a bit dismissive. John didn't seem to know who she was talking about and the moment passed quickly, but I didn't appreciate it.

That being said, I thought Phil did a SUPER job in his Q&A and that he exuded confidence and shared more than I have ever seen him share.

I loved Vegas every time I went, and I don't really gamble (we went on the 10c slots one time just so we could say we had; I went on a hilarious Ancient Rome-themed slot machine in Caesar's Palace which played a loud obnoxious fanfare every time you pulled the arm; plus the free drinks for gamblers don't hurt. I won $18; last of the High Rollers).

I once heard it described (the strip, anyway) as 'Disneyland for alcoholics', lol, but there really is lots to do even if you're not much of a drinker/partier. Each of the hotels is a resort by itself, there are shows and tons of shops and crazy things to look at (world's biggest chocolate fountain, anyone?). Beautiful gardens and buildings and things to look at. (The Bellagio fountains!! :happytears:) Exhibitions and concerts and live music. A freaking fake volcano. I did a round-the-world coca-cola tasting LOL. There are several Cirque du Soleil shows in residence - I think D&P saw O once? I saw that one too, and Love, both amazing. SO many great restaurants (including the 'dreaded' buffets lol). Animals, even; I went to the Siegfried and Roy place at the Mirage which had lions, alpacas and dolphins etc.

tl;dr - Vegas is super fun even if you're not into gambling, drinking and strippers. (And also if you are, I guess. ;)) I hope they have a great time and can't wait for the pics!

I checked the questions people asked and there were a lot who where very interesting! she choose to ask those, why is she complaining ? or maybe what she said wasnt in a pejorative way ?

Uhhh... really? Wow. So not only she came to the interview completely unprepared, chose some really boring questions, asked REALLY boring questions of her own (the British ambassador one was so stupid, like really?? Is he the only guy from the UK that came to Vidcon??), embarrassed herself by not knowing how to read simple usernames, but she also decided to insult the fanbase. Great.

The interviewer was mediocre and Phil deserved better, I'm still kinda mad about this tbh. She had no idea who he is or what he does, I wonder if she even googled him prior to the interview. She should just be quiet and improve for her next job instead of being judgmental.

I had seen the interviewer on twitter prior to vidcon because she had been digging her nose into other youtube drama. I rolled my eyes when I saw she was interviewing Phil because he deserves a better interviewer than someone whose job is complaining about youtube. So I'm not shocked she is talking crap about Phil or any youtuber behind their back. She seemingly thinks the whole youtube community is a bunch of spoiled 10 year olds. Also wow that whole q&a with Phil and all she got out of it was socks. As if Phil didn't talk about anything else.

And that is why Phil doesn't complain about people he's worked with/doesn't let Dan complain about people he's worked with in liveshows(like whatever happened with their microphones before the BONCAS(?)). It's always going to get back to someone, and even if it's an offhand comment, it makes you look unprofessional as fuck to the people who care.

I agree with what others have already said about this: I was trying to be kind towards her in my mind because she seemed nice enough despite being horrendously underprepared for the Q&A, but this has made me salty. You had weeks to prepare, and to do your research; you must have got thousands of questions in that hashtag and yeah, while a lot of them were kind of inane and some people just want to get noticed no matter what, there were plenty of ‘deeper’ questions to choose from as well based on just a brief browse through the tag. But nah, you were tweeting what you should ask him right before the event started and ended up making Phil rate a picture of someone’s dog live on stage. Great content. Truly, well done.

Regarding Dan’s bit in the Night of Awesome (christ) yesterday: while I ultimately prefer them as a duo and that’s how I discovered them, I don’t see how this story would have benefitted from Phil’s presence in any way. If I have any complaints, I would say that I would have preferred it as a dinof video as it was essentially a live rendition of one. It just seemed like a strange setting for him to do a segment like this, what with all the... dancing and bad comedy that was apparently happening (didn’t watch any of it so idk). I remember seeing the marathon theories here months ago and not putting any actual weight to them but good theorising, lol. There’s something really comforting about his message of trying to do something out of his comfort zone, failing at it and accepting it. Though it must have been absolutely mortifying to have to drop out the night before, I commend that he’s able to joke about it already - but as he says, talking about his failures and struggles in life is kind of his career so. I also liked the reflecting on how we may feel pressured to do things that we think are good but may not actually want to do in the end (I’m paraphrasing from what I remember of watching it earlier, that’s probably not exactly what he said). I mean, who knows if he’ll run a marathon one day when he feels more prepared but yeah.

Glad everything’s already been said on that interviewer so I can just add “ugh” cos I could really go on a rant. You get to interview Phil and John and have no fricking clue, I mean they’re just guys, not gods, but still ugh. There were lots of generic and notice-me tweets, she just had to bother delving to find the others.

That final photo with frenz is so cute, I’m glad they met up with Thomas Sanders again (did you all see his photobomb of a bunch of his cosplaying fanders? Amazing) and Charlie, who I didn’t even know was there. I had forgotten who Molly is entirely, gonna have to look her up. Also Anthony of course. There’s a very sweet video from his m&g too, and his hair’s got so long.

The Night of Awesome is generally a mixture. I don’t remember the difference between it and the other show from what I saw in Europe and London, but there was singing, poetry, food challenges (yay  ) amongst others. Also in London a magician did the same trick as Phil’s from ii, same hazard-taped box and everything, that was hilarious.

And damn, I was thinking this morning that maaaaaybe I had been too harsh on the interviewer but apparently not lol. How incredibly unprofessional to say something like that in another interview, especially since she was the one who did not do her homework very well. Like obviously the nature of questions will be different depending on the creator, audience or subject, but there's no be rude about it. If you feel like community interviews are below you as a journalist or something, don't do them.

I don't know why, but this post just sent me. Obviously stealing it was wrong but the whole thing made me snort.

Anyways, I always wanted to see Dan try stand up and his bit at Vidcon was close enough. Loved it, he's good at it and if it was something he wanted to pursue further, I'd be here for that. (I also would love to see him on a panel show one day or maybe celebrity bake off. Zoella was on that, so why not? But I guess that won't happen.)
