Generally, when you look at your monthly AdSense, very little of the money you make in a month is actually due to the videos that were uploaded that month. [...] The majority of your views are residual views from the videos from your back catalog.
And this is Cristine we're talking about, so - while this convo has been had 8 million times already - I think it's extremely safe to say that Dan and Phil don't need constant new uploads to continue getting a regular income. With all the old videos people love to rewatch and the entirety of the gaming channel? I can see how they're nice and comfy.
This is actually really interesting to know! And yeah, with how much the phandom loves to rewatch content, the $$$$ really be rolling in even without much new content. :moneybath:

I do wonder though, how many ad breaks do they normally have in videos? I perpetually have adblock on so I'm quite curious!

This is a month ago now, but I remembered someone posting on Twitter that during the first month or so of lockdown, views on DAPG were up nearly 50% on the previous month. It even increased a bit more after that, and is still showing an increase (just under 10% in the previous month, which is quite impressive considering how long the channel has been dormant for).

I have no idea what sort of effect that would have on their bottom line size-wise, but it's probably pretty significant - an unexpected positive for them in the middle of all of this, perhaps?

Now I'm not saying I want a Sailor Moon cosplay video, but I may have a lot of feels if they were to cosplay as Sailor Neptune And Sailor Uranus.

I think Phil just likes the art, and it is really good. :deppy: A lot of art looks like it could be any random gay couple. :dogue:

But how great would it be if their unlikely return to joint on-camera-together-in-physical-form-on-YT content were that...! :D

I like the new cactus too! So cute. At first I thought 'will he have to give rainbow-cactus-Dan a shoutout' but I think it's an opt-in thing by the sound of it, so presumably Dan won't be leaving his name on a membership post to be included, haha.

Interesting, though - the Q&As and chat emotes have been removed. Understandable for the chat emotes (though it probably eliminates YouTube as a possibility for future liveshows, should they ever return) as they were never used anyway, and I'm not surprised about no more Q&As (he hasn't done one in foreeeeeever) but it is a shame. I don't remember if the 'question of the week' thing he did for liveshows was an official perk, or just something he did through community messages, but either way it isn't there now. Still, I guess it's good that he's keeping it going into year 2 and beyond, as it shows whatever else happens at least he isn't going anywhere on YT for the time being.

Totally agree with everything you said! But I also wanted to add on–and this isn't a judgement of anyone who pays for it ofc–but given how easily spread these perks are, and how honestly there isn't much ~exclusive content~ that's come out of these memberships, it kind of is wild to me that he's still keeping this going without any hugely tangible content pieces from it? Maybe that's me expecting too much, and tbh I'd be worried about something like that causing more walls and fights in phandom, but I guess I thought he would do more with this membership option.

I don’t judge him for it much, but I feel like maybe I should since he must know people share the stuff, but he’s added the 20 replies and shoutouts with an unlisted video, I mean that might be shared too, but clearly he’s trying to keep some exclusives. I find it very hard to keep my anxiety at bay to put myself out there for anything work related so it is a bit galling (but also just my own crap, ofc). I’ve been watching PetesJams on Twitch lately and a few people keep gifting subs to others in the chat, 5 at a time and I think that’s £5 a month each too. He was in tears for a little while tonight over the generosity and not feeling deserving, so that was different.

I’ve been a member for over and year and I don’t have a problem with it. I’ve always known you don’t get anything from it but I look at it kind of like a patreon. I’m a member because I enjoy his videos. If he stops posting I can always unsubscribe.

i was wondering the other day; what happened to everyone who sponsored danandphilgames? was that just a temporary thing that was active for their live streams, or what? how did that work?

do you mean sponsored them in the chat?

my understanding is that sponsoring in a youtube livestream just means bumping up your question/comment with money so they're more likely to see it. a bit like sending a message on younow with bars vs just typing into the chat.

but someone else can correct me if i'm wrong.

iirc they had a monthly membership that just ended one day and that’s how we found out gaming streams were over.

I discovered something from way back today that I thought was cute. I didn’t discover deppy until 2016, so I don’t know if people noticed this at the time. Listen to what Dan says at 0:05 in the first vid and what Phil says at 2:20 in the second vid.

I like how they both like the same scent and they both claim ownership, so I guess like Norman, the candle is jointly owned.

I realize I'm loosely proving Hazel's point here, but in her latest video (that is otherwise irrelevant to D&P), she says:
Do you remember the days where you'd do a really long vlog and Dan and Phil would pop up for like one second and you’d put ’em in the thumbnail?
I sure do, Hazel. I sure do. Since we've got..... nothing else to talk about besides pigeons......... I'll talk about this. IDK if it's the mood I'm in today or what, but... I donno, y'all. Thinking about vloggers doing that made me a bit sad for D&P suddenly. I realize they made bank and there's nothing really to complain about for them, but... Imagine for years being the thumbnail to a bunch of videos you're barely in just because that person ran up to you with a camera? Wild. Rough. Glad they're focusing on friends and family for now.

Miss them though. So much. :sobs:

I hope Phil does a video tomorrow (any video, except a appearance in YouTubers react) not having live shows to look forward to sucks, I miss his face, I miss Norman cam, I miss news story of the weeeeeeeeek but mostly I miss the little snippets in to his life.

Phil’s pigeon saga is hilarious and echoes what I have with the back garden, extra grateful for it lately, with my cat, a young tabby boy, and now a new one I just saw this morning (thankfully it and mine just missed each other). I was nice to the tabby the other day so later he stepped inside the back door, briefly, and was then a git to my cat again, but anyway, pigeon probably wants food, Phil. Curiosity could be it I suppose  That glimpse into their exciting life is great, though, glad he’s happy to share even that much.

Pigeon saga so far for those who haven't seen it yet:

I agree, it is kinda sad. I know most YouTube friendships are based on numbers, but other vloggers really just used DnP for years and it wasn't even mutually beneficial. I would make me kinda feel like shit tbh, especially because I do think there was a time where they genuinely tried to be more friendly and hang out with people (Dan going to the 1D concert with Louise & Co comes to mind). The more time passes, the more I realize that it's no wonder that all their YouTube friendships died a quiet death.

On the subject of how much they would make on DNP games based on 2.5 million views in a month (of which I was a few lol)- depending on # of ad breaks, CPM, percentage of people that have youtube premium, and countries viewers are in - that would net between $10,000 USD and $30,000 USD. So a tidy sum.

Tangentially on this topic a youtuber I watch whose channel recently shot up posted a video about what her first video to hit a million views made - the tl;dr is that her one million view video (a channel with 100k subs and presumably low CPM) made $3000. So yeah - I'd say for Dan and Phil? It's probably closer to the end of 30k for their views on DAPG in a month.
