i don't think comparing these four to phan is fair... troye and connor were already out, idk about joey and daniel but were they making tons of videos together before the reveal? d&p have a 7 year long history of calling each other buddies. :platonic:
as always, just playing the devil's advocate's here!

This was an unfortunate typo that made me laugh so much hehe! I also want to your post and I related to some of it.

I've said many times that I'm on the fence (ie I just don't give a crap) about their relationship. It means nothing to me if they are or aren't as I don't watch them for that. This gets mistaken a lot for antiphan even though I think they would be super cute in a relationship and think they would be an ideal couple. I am in no way antiphan I just like seeing the other side of the argument sometimes for sheer discussion. It would be hella boring if we were all just in the pink trash can all the time. This doesn't mean I'm against them being together I just don't personally care either way.

They most likely can afford better now, even a house, but I've seen far shittier London apartments.
Their flat is super nice. I wouldn't mind living in something that big in London. The fact they have 3 rooms, two of which are humongous for London bedrooms is pretty good. They'd find it hard to find anything that big for less than a million pounds if they were to buy somewhere. Some of the 1 bedroom flats where I live are going for £500,000 so a house with as many rooms as they have now, well they're looking at a small fortune.

I've asked other people this before but I want to hear all the different reasons everyone has.

Why is moving into a house together the ultimate confirmation of phan? Someone argued that it's a joint investment. That it's the next natural step in a romantic relationship.

I don't know. I feel like youtubers (and regular people) move into houses as roommates a lot and I don't think phan buying a house will be a complete confirmation. It'll be cute and make me happy and all but I don't think I can go as far as to say it's a confirmation.
Nah, certainly not 100% confirmation in any way, shape, or form. 100% confirmation would only be taken from the exact words written or spoken by them.

It would make me happy, though

Oh, hey there. Welcome!

Just don't want my words to get misconstrued. I think there is a big difference between accepting something as a probable truth and deeming something as 100% irrefutable. That was my reasoning there. It's a good life lesson to only accept actual facts as truth. I'm not saying that it's not okay to surmise, only that we certainly can't accept that as a true representation of reality.

The reason I think that moving into a new house will confirm phan for me is because Phil is nearly 30. If he had a bf/gf and wanted to move in with them, it would be kinda weird because I'm guessing he would have only lived in the new house for a year or two. At some point, if they aren't together, they're gonna settle down. Phil said he wants kids (right?) and get married, and that would most likely happen sometime in his 30's. I think it would be pointless to move into a another house if he's going to move out from that soon.

I can't speak for every person obvs, but some points I've heard over the years is

- the idea of such deep friendship is just as meaningful as a relationship, so some people find value as it's portrayed and don't feel the need to put a romantic spin on it

- dan and phil were both very young lads on a platform that encouraged out the box style, behaviour, and ideas. Even Phil saying that Muse isn't his "omg best band ever top love" anymore is a huge sign of growth, and growing up is something we all do. So we can't know the full context of those tweets and messages when maybe it just belonged in the past and not the present.

- the conversation on toxic masculinity and why can't guys express themselves and act in ways that really close girl friends do without it being honked at as "GAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY".

- for some people it reminds them of their own same-sex friendship and the prejudice they also faced and they project that onto Neither a bad nor a good thing, just their perspective

- they just don't see it that way, and that's up to the person and their lives and experiences

- I can't deny that a lot of female fans have fantasies about being with them and that's a big part. But that's usually among younger fans who are in bad situations and use them as a way to escape their current life. Most grow out of it as they get older or find happiness in other, more tangible places

- some are really protective over how dan and phil act to the fans in regards to old tweets and images. you could argue if dan and phil didn't want them on the internet anymore or spread aroudn then that's their right as people and privacy yada yada, so you take it as "well maybe it means they don't feel that way anymore" and some fans can take it to extreme measures

- some just like being devil's advocate (hello that's me)

- I dunno it's just interesting to discuss overall. they are interesting people and for better or for worse this conversation has been going on at least since 2012 and even before that. But 2012-3 was the big explosion of subs and fans and they got bombarded with leaks and old images and "are you gay?" and "what type of girl do you like" and "is phan real" that I doubt there'll be a repeat of that whole scene unless something indisputable happens

This is probably a bit of different situation but I kinda think it is applicable(?) so I just gonna paraphrase-quote Connor over here. I haven't watch Connor for a looong time so I don't know which video it was from but in one of his videos after he came out, he said something like "I saw people said 'I knew he is gay, i knew it!'. No you don't, you don't know, you only knew it because I told you." When Joey announce Janiel, I also feel irritated with ppl who comment 'We know Joey, we all know' because they really don't? They don't know him irl so absolutely anything is possible (but of course Occam's razor, Janiel is real and it indeed is).

I feel the same about phan. I was almost always on the fence about it because I don't mind either way and maybe, because of that, only something like absolute declaration (or action) from them will makes me 'know' what indeed is real.

Also, to quote someone from earlier threads, we (the phandom in general) have been trained (somehow) to be their lab mice and everything that happened must have context to be declare as phan proof or antiproof.

Example: we have that recording (that I can't archive right now because god knows where that snapchat had gone to) where Dan said 'I love you and your bird nose' but it can't be a proof because Dan might have said it sarcasticly or ironically; ie it needs context. Lol.

(im sorry im not eloquent and articulate :'( )

Also, hello and welcome!!

and this post is not meant to attack anybody, it is just my opinion and how i feel/think about the topic

Yeah that's why I think that even if they are looking to move somewhere else, they're not exactly in a hurry. They live in a nice place and they really made their little home out of it, I'd personally stay where the hell I am. I'd love them buying a house of course, but it's not necessary (they just need to hoard less shit and declutter). Buying a house would indeed cost them a lot money unless they move out of the city, but they like living in London and they'd give up a lot of mobility as neither owns a car or has driven in years. Dan doesn't even know where his license is :') I feel like they're gonna stay where they are for a while.

on the current topic: yay Deppy move to a house plz won't really confirm or deny anything, but better than the #busgate, that's for sure

now, re: the negative reaction to the fanfiction in TATINOF, because I've just written a freaking essay, sorry :?
dezzawintz wrote:This might have been covered before (apologies if so) but can anyone explain the negative reactions to the fanfiction segment? Is it a baiting concern?
While I can only speak for myself, it's a question that I've been thinking about a lot (and I mean a lot), so I'll post my opinion. I'm afraid people are tired of this topic, though, so I apologize in advance (feel free to PM me, though, if you want to talk about it)

Disclaimer: I still haven't watched TATINOF video, I just can't, I start the video and close it almost instantly, I really should try maybe getting drunk beforehand, but I have too much work recently, even on weekend, what is my life  I did watch the fan video from (I think?) Toronto before (which was mostly audio, thankfully), but I did it mostly with my eyes closed and only finished that one because that day I desperately needed to do something to avoid dealing with all the shit irl.

So, I have to start by saying I've been reading fanfiction since I was 13 (I'm in my late 20s now) and since the beginning, I've almost exclusively been reading m/m and f/f pairings. I've written some fanfics in my native language when I was a teenager (m/m and f/f) which I've tried very hard to erase from my memory because of how bad they were (I hope they've since been deleted from the Internet, but I'm afraid to check). I've read (but not necessarily enjoyed) fanfics from all major fandoms with some exception for RPF. My only rule is I don't read RPF about romantic relationship between people that I don't believe are (or could be if it's an AU) in a relationship and I mostly don't read omegaverse because it perpetuates the worst stereotypes (although, I've seen one or two stories that did a good job subverting the trope).

I honestly love fandom culture very much, I appreciate the progressiveness of the community which taught me to accept myself and I will forever be grateful for that (I've been living in France for several years, but originally come from a fairly homophobic country), but nowadays I sometimes feel that fans really are as entitled as some critics suggest, which makes me really sad (there was an interesting article about it on Vox http://www.vox.com/2016/8/7/11950648/fa ... al-warfare. At the same time, there seems to be a gender dynamic in play, too, what with the horrible objectifying fanboy culture being generally accepted by the society and (sometimes equally horribly objectifying) fangirl culture being ridiculed. I like discussing fandom and reading about it mainstream media when it's done with respect, but I hate when it's only played for laughs, like on Graham Norton show where famous people, usually actors, are asked to read fanfics about themselves (I like his show and him as host, though). I can't deny there's this whole objectifying, the Internet is for porn, aspect of fanfiction, it's not all subverting tropes, promoting diversity and giving voice to side characters (I do read smut and I'm not ashamed of it, imo written or drawn porn is much better that video because there's no issue of consent). But I feel that the mainstream conversation about fanfiction is very one-sided. It all comes down to "Why do straight women enjoy writing and reading about two men fucking?" with answers like "for the same reason straight men watch lesbian porn". Which, of course, may be true for some straight women, but not all fandom members are women, even a smaller percent of us are straight (look up, like, every fandom survey out there), not all fanfiction is about relationship and specifically fucking, and even this whole concept of stories about relationship being somewhat inferior to other kinds of stories because it's for women is really, really problematic.

So, after that long intro, what really bothers me about Dan and Phil including fanfiction in their show is the ridiculing aspect of it and especially their reaction. Even if it's something they've written themselves, they basically made a parody of fanfction about Dand and Phil, according to which the main feature of that fanfiction is sexualising their relationship while putting the characters in different cliché AU scenarios. Which is something that exists, but not all phanfiction is like that. It's like the line in Dan's roast yourself video about people shipping phan because it's cute. Disregarding, you know, the whole history of how they met, them living together for so long, visiting each other's family and no SO. But the thing about the video is that it's not about objective truth, but about Dan's own perception of himself, or the perception of him by a random hater on the Internet, or his perception of the hater's perception... Anyway, I'll allow it, even if I don't appreciate it. The thing with the show is, though, that it's the Internet's perspective on the whole and not their own (if we follow the story). And at the same time, this Internet's perspective was written by Deppy, so I can read into that as well.

Ok, I feel like I'm doing a really bad job explaining it, but what I take from the show is that Deppy as, you know, real people who wrote TATINOF think that the quintessential fanfiction about Dan and Phil is an AU in which they have sex. Which already offends me a little, but whatever. What's even more problematic (sorry, I can't find another word, I've already spent two hours writing this thing) for me is their reaction, sorry, the reaction of the characters they play in the show. If it had been something like "of course, it's a smutty AU, what else it could have been, knowing our audience" with a wink-wink nudge-nudge "here you go" or "is it what you've been wanting your whole life?" after some PG fanservicy action, that would have been acceptable. Still a little bit problematic because pure fanservice, but acceptable. But it wouldn't have worked for the script which needs the segment to end on something offensive/they "can't take". They could have put something in there that could objectively be viewed as a squick, like daddy kink, or anything really from a truly amazing number of shock fics about them (which was the case with the skin fic in Tumblr tag video), or repeat what Dan did in that old video of his about fanfiction (you know, "my favorite pokemon is goldeen?!" one). What they did instead frankly amounts to and that's what my problem is with. Is it real Deppy's reaction to fanfiction? Seems strange, because previously they didn't have such problems with it. Is it Dan-and-Phil-as-characters' reaction? Why is it different from real Deppy's reaction? Or is it specifically about roleplaying it for their audience? WHY PUTTING IT IN THERE THEN?

Sorry, I just don't understand. What is their point? That's why I wanted something, anything, about it in the documentary, instead they completely -ed it and all we got is a platonic bus tour (with the emphasis on "beds and stuff" in the opening sequence, so I suppose they know). I object to this kind of deal!

Ok, I'll stop now, because I feel like I've written much more than anyone has ever wanted to read about this topic, and kudos to you if you did. Feel free to respond if you disagree, because I'd really like to see something good in this segment, get over my cringe and enjoy the show. Just don't tell me, please, that they didn't think about this, they are obsessive control-freaks

wait ok what did i miss. there was no smutty fanfic option as far as i remember. the most scandalous one was the cake option and it was literally just
phil shoving cake down dan's face.
the only "smutty" thing about it was the innuendo phrase "open wide for captain lester". :?

Kinda OT but the Janiel talk made me wanna clear up a few things. So I'll just put it under a spoiler so only those interested will have to read it.
Joey did Daniel for a few months. Speculation about their relationship appeared around November or December 2014 because Daniel uploaded pics of him with Joey's dog. I honestly cannot trace how the speculation began, but I think it had to do with that pic, and the fact that Daniel always posted a selfie in the place where Joey was, but never appeared on his vlogs. It got to the point that fans of Joey spammed Daniel's insta (and I think FB too) asking him about his position in Joey's life. Daniel then privated his social media accounts and that made everything more suspicious to the point that it was "common knowledge" to Joey's fans that they were together. Months more of haru-ing Daniel until he was introduced in Joey's coming out video on May 2015. And 9 more months of introducing Daniel first as a friend, then a bestfriend, haru-ing the fact that they lived together, before finally confirming that indeed, they were a couple on February 2016. At this point of haru-ing Joey was still click-baiting Shoey shippers so there was ambiguity there for a bit.
So I think that in a way, yes, Janiel's situation and Deppy's are comparable because both did have elements of fan stalking and investigating, speculation to the point that fans claimed to know the "truth" of the situation (both in favor and disregarding Janiel), ambiguity by the parties involved, except that the ambiguity perpetuated by Deppy has been going on much much longer than Janiel.

Just don't tell me, please, that they didn't think about this, they are obsessive control-freaks

second time typing this post- my shitty three/four year old 5c crashed halfway through so i've pulled out the computer.

just to switch up the topics a little bit, but not too far- how would you feel if Deppy really weren't together in the end? i'm personally still forming an opinion, but as an example, i've seen people say they'd feel betrayed, or lied to. i can't remember exactly, but i'm sure the reasoning was that d+p play phan up, and quite a lot sometimes. p confident it also started an argument over it becoming queerbaiting in the case that they weren't together(i don't wanna start another queerbaiting v fanservice debacle- atm i think it's not queerbaiting because i'm confident there's actually feelings involved, so it would be fanservice or for fun- but now isn't the time for this discussion lol).

the thing is, Deppy really don't owe us anything in terms of phan, so would it be right for us to be mad? no. however,, some have argued that they do b/c of how much they play it up. makes me realize how much we don't know abt their lives in the long run

still working out how i'd feel about it, so when/if i figure that out i'll quote w it. for now, how would you react?

The whole thing was pg13 but laden with innuendos, it's not explicitly stated but the whole camping under the stars drawing each other then if I remember correctly it goes on to say Dan unbuttoned something before he cut the narrative off, so it's a very pg way of setting up a sex scene I thought?

This is super interesting but can you explain how it amounts to no homo? B/c they act like the don't want to have sex w/ each other?
no, they act like they don't want to play on stage/read through having sex with each other, which is different. reading the script they wrote themselves, I might add. Now, I don't actually think it should be viewed on two different levels, but let's accept Deppy's logic here. The show is about Dan and Phil as they are on the Internet. Ok, so the people who do the segment are Dan and Phil from the Internet, not Deppy. And apparently, they have problem with playing having sex (they didn't actually get to sex, though, it's touching or something, isn't it? I don't want to force myself to rewatch it to check) on stage. And it's really about playing it, not doing irl, because even in the world of the show they are on a stage and not in the woods/on a ship, there are props, they don't become those characters and they have free will. The only reason for stopping we get in the show is that's uncomfortable. Why? The audience doesn't know. Either, it's weird because they are friends and friends can't play having sex on stage (lol wut), or it's weird because it's real (I'm only talking about the characters in the show). Nothing in the show goes out of its way to tell me the characters Dan and Phil are in a relationship, on the contrary, they sing about not needing "a real mate". Ergo, for the characters in the show it's , I can't think of another explanation with the way it's written and played. Is it a "no homo" from Deppy, too? That I don't know because I honstely don't understand their motivation. I would be really grateful is someone could explain in to me :(

Lurking Trash thank you for answering my question, I'm the type of person who watches the behind the magic type shows because I need to know how tricks are done lol (I'd love to spend an evening with someone like dynamo lol)

Their flat is huge for a flat in London, I'd imagine if they did move it'd be because they wanted to buy somewhere rather than rent, although with them not doing the radio show anymore (which I think was the reason for them moving to London?) they aren't really tied down to living there anymore so they could get a much bigger place on the outskirts of London or even up north (my friend used to work in London but live up north and just get a train down for his shifts and then stay in a hotel and he wasn't being paid anywhere near as much as these two) and go down to London just for events etc.

this is something i've thought about a lot. if Deppy planned to use the fanfic section as fanservice, why would they act so when reading it out? is it to keep it from getting too 'real' on stage? did they not want to weird out the parents in the audience? they wrote the scripts themselves, if they were that uncomfortable they could've cut it out. i swear i'll never understand these boys :sideeye:

The way you describe it with the way I perceive it: the "oh my god NO, you cheeky bastard" dynamic is the real thrill. The oooohhhh they almost did it! teehee giggle giggle, not if they were pretending to enjoy it. First of all it's a relatively PG show. How do I say this, it's like the selling point of the fics IS the "no homo", not that "no homo" is the side effect. They aren't selling these fic skits as tribute to fiction but more like "oooh look what you guys make us do in your spare time, how's about that eh? wink wink, what if we actually did it though? ;) " and from the reaction of the fans, they love it. They love that wow they are actually going there oh my god look they are backing out and stopping there haha I wonder what the rest is like part of the dynamic. Even the way Dan stares at the camera at innuendo or whatever; it's a nod to the people who want to grab at it but stops right there because it's also funny.

does this make sense? is this real life? or is this just phantasy?

I don't really know. I would be disappointed and sad, I can't deny that. But I wouldn't be mad. As you said, they don't owe us anything. They didn't start the ship on purpose, they even tried to deny it. Then they became more comfortable and decided to make jokes and innuendos instead. I can't blame them. It was an opportunity, people would have shipped them anyway, so why not give them more things to talk about? I understand where people are coming from, but this is Deppy we're talking about. How can anyone imagine these gentle souls being so problematic and treating us deliberately like shit? If they aren't together, they somehow fell into the Phan hole. Yes, maybe they could have stopped and didn't because they saw how it was good for gaining more followers and keeping them invested, but I doubt that was the only reason. I think they didn't see a way out at some point, they didn't want to disappoint, they were afraid that people wouldn't like them without Phan being a thing, etc. I understand why they wouldn't deny Phan if it wasn't real. But accusing them of ship- or queerbaiting is just not something that I feel is okay to do because what on earth makes people think that Deppy could be this bad?

this is almost offtopic and i feel bad for bringing this up, because they've obviously both matured since then, but i just want to point out that these were supposed to be the holy days of 2009-2010 when "there were no shippers" and love was real
i.e. it's not like they never shipbaited before

Pretty indifferent. I like how they interact together and I'd be lying if I said I don't think they would be a cute couple but finding out for certain that they are not together wouldn't really change anything for me. BUT I'm super new to the fandom in general and I haven't had nearly as much time to get as emotionally invested as many of their other viewers, so

Well, yeah, but as you said, they've changed a lot. I meant if you look at Dan and Phil nowadays. Back then they were so young and also didn't have much experience with a huge fanbase. I think it was just to be provocative and not even shipbaiting (at this point I'm starting to wonder what shipbaiting even is, I feel like people interpret that word very differently). They were experimenting, having fun and liked the idea of people freaking out about it without really thinking about any consequences. But they would know the consequences now and they also know how to be respectful. Back in the day, Dan also said "retarded" and made a video about gender roles that his older self unlisted. I do believe that the Dan and Phil in that video wouldn't mind shipbaiting just for the lols. But I don't think this means we should believe that they'd still do it.

I almost 100% believe in phan, so I'd be shocked. When I started to get into them, I thought they were just friends and I didn't really care about the shipping/their relationship. A lot has changed, and their chemistry/ambiguousness is a big thing that keeps me here. Sometimes I wish I didn't care about their relationship as much as I do, so that way I'd be not surprised/not care if they weren't together. I'd be sad and disappointed for keeping it ambiguous for so long, but in the end they didn't have much of a choice. I'd almost want to be mad, but I really couldn't be.
Though as I'm a 'demon phannie', I'd probs think they broke up.
But anyways, I would have to take a big break at the least if they aren't together. Maybe even leave, which would be really sad.
