I agree they were defo passing the childcare off to Tabs, but is that what you mean by misogynistic or do you have other examples, cause I would call what I'm referring to playing into gender role stereotyping.
No, I wasn't referring to child care, except when they say she's not pulling her weight. They have also said she was a hard working woman so that's okay. I was referring more to constantly calling her T-Bag and the episode when she was pregnant, calling her a whale and just the overall feels there. They clearly had no concept of how pregnancy worked and seems unsympathetic (which whatever it's just the Sims) but their doting over Dab made me feel better. They have also focused on her for one or two episodes, so that's nice. Shrug.
Sorry, but that's quite a statement to make that they are misogynistic, and I don't think that's fair. It's the wrong use of the word? It's not what deppy do at all. Arguably, some of what they can say at times can be considered *sexist* but I wouldn't just "call them out" on mistakes or slip ups as indicating that they're out to hate women. I know they aren't exempt from criticism, of course, but sometimes gender roles, no matter how much Dan tries to "break down", are still there, and sometimes people still make the mistake-that doesn't mean people should take out the pitchforks. For one, they are mistakes, and second, I think people could be misinterpreting them. I never considered them calling her "T-bag" as bad, but I guess that's up to interpretation

In the case of Tabitha, I don't think they pass the "child care" onto her, the only case this may be interpreted is that they mostly play through Dil, therefore Tabitha might get the job of feeding Dab while they are off doing the science plot. They also have Dil do child-minding interactions. Unless someone went to the trouble of analyzing the amount of time they allocated Dil and Tabitha to child minding, and the circumstances relating to the character play. Maybe they should spend more time with Tabitha? Or maybe they're more focused on their main character?

Secondly, I think deppy are kind of out of touch with what women behave/like/act like. They have female friends, and are very intuitive, kind people. However they wouldn't understand what it is like being female and may make mistakes or assumptions on what women like/behave. I think in some cases, they pay very close attention to respecting women/female characters in something, and people like them for that, but whenever they start ignoring a female character, not pay them any attention, and treat them like any other character, people don't like that eg. calling Tabitha a "stinky Ho". I do think they were unsympathetic to her being pregnant, and Phil admitting to calling a pregnant woman a "blimp" didn't help the case. But really, it's just a game and they're jokingly saying this stuff to a bunch of pixels.
Yeah, to each their own, but I haven't found what has been said as particularly misogynistic. I think that's a very strong word. I think they focus on Dil because he's the main character of the story, and to an extent Dab (possibly because they have plans to make a legacy? ) but I don't think it's a female thing at all. I did kind of judge Phil with his comments about the whale when Tabs was pregnant, but I wouldn't say it's a misogynistic thing, so much as just generally not realizing that it's not a cool thing to joke about (he's by far not the first man, or even person as women do this too, to not understand that even though it's socially acceptable to gain lots of weight when you're pregnant, it's still not appreciated to talk about. I have no idea why he or anyone would think that's okay, but it's definitely not just misogynists who do this.) And yeah, while Dan's comment could have been interpreted as being sarcastic in the "let me overreact to this innocent sexism for comedic effect" but I think we have enough context about his character to know that was not his intention.

I didn't interpret the "blimp" or "whale" comments badly, I feel as though that was something Phil may have pushed for comedic effect within those episodes as well - it's unlikely that he'd say that to any female friends in real life, and he has had pregnant friends (Laura comes to mind) so I'm sure if he were making any of those comments regarding real situations he would have been berated long before now.

I also feel like they focus on Dil because he's the main character, and Dab because he's the baby, with new, fun interactions. I'm sure if the baby were a girl they would interact with them just as much.

So yeah, definitely not mysoginistic. Low-key sexist, without even meaning to be? Yeah maybe. But I don't think the examples provided here relate to that at all.

I should have been more carefully with how I worded things. Misogynistic was my husband's word choice and I honestly don't think they are. I think they do use a lot of terms, like dirty ho, flipantly or ironically and I totally get why they are focused on Dil and Dab. I wasn't trying to call them out on it and probably shouldn't have said anything at all. I do think they are both decent progressive guys. (I'm just glad we are over the days when Dan would use the word rape so casually. Sorry for any typos I'm at the doctors office right now.)

I've woken up and can't get back to sleep my life is a disaster thank goodness I have tomorrow today off

I think they are subtly making up for the pregnant jokes by not forcing Tabitha to lose all the weight she's gained and instead just letting her AI do whatever it wants. People keep commenting about how fat she is now and I don't think D&P have said anything about it at all, at least to my memory. Plump Tabitha is here to stay as long as she wants

[offtopic]As for how they're treating her in general, they seem to be treating her more or less the same way that they would treat a man. There's a very interesting phenomenon that I'm reminded of though (very interesting if you're a nerd like me anyway ). Studies have shown that most people actually view egalitarian men as misogynists (you can see this a lot in feminist groups, who often call "egalitarianism" as anti-woman, but most people do it internally even if they don't identify as feminists). D&P behave more egalitarian despite calling themselves "feminists", so it follows that some people would view them as a little sexist.[/offtopic]

I didn't think you thought badly of them in particular! I am just saying in a general response to what your husband had said!

Yeah, I see what you mean about playing more as the main character and him having the careers they can join him st. I think I'm guilty of holding them to a super high standard of not playing into gender roles so when I notice anything it's more blatant.

Good, good. I have enjoyed reading all of your perspectives, but did have a moment of panic and embarrassment when I saw all the long responses. I mean I definitely don't care much about Tabitha myself, that pregnancy episode just stuck out to me and was when I decided not to let my son watch the Sims series until he is older and has more context.

Something I wanted to say earlier, but missed my editing window, is that I think Dan and Phil, but particularly Dan will say phrases that are popular right now (or are passé), in a meme like way, and sometimes they are a bit offensive, but they are meant to be ironic jokes. It's just his style. Sometimes I find it really funny and sometimes I cringe, but it's all good :)

To add on to the misogyny/gender roles conversation, I don't think any of their behavior as of late has been problematic as far as gender goes. I think in the past they've done some stupid shit men vs women, but haven't we all. Maybe they've made a few slip-ups, but don't we all do that?

Someone said that Dan and Phil seemed pretty out of touch with women and I think that's spot on. Even though they've become less problematic, it seems like they still have an idea of a woman that is far from the truth. I don't know if that makes any sense or not.

Actually, this is pretty much how I see them as well. I find that most of the time they don't make a big deal out of gender roles, unless the situation calls for them to make a statement, otherwise they treat everybody the same. This includes also making fun of Tabitha's character. I think some people want them to be particularly sensitive to female characters while other people (me for example) find it disingenuous or demeaning if they were to continuously make statements like women can do anything. It just sounds condescending.

I didn't find the phrased statement Dan made in the last Horse Prince video to be this, but other people did due to of his poor choice in tone. Of course, them making these statements at appropriate moments (that I think they have) have been nice and refreshing. Yet, I personally like how they make fun of Tabitha and she isn't safe from their ridicule. I love when she's the butt of the joke, that we get a laugh out of the ridiculousness of her character, instead of her being this perfect trophy wife, she's like an actual person and not someone they dress up to make look pretty and for Dil to make kids with.

EDIT: His new icon looks like an edge lord who sets their profile picture to Filthy Frank. I hope it inspires everyone out there to pick up the edge and change their profiles to Dan in frames.

And I also saved a picture of Dan in similar frames from last year from a M&G, I didn't think it would be so relevant again.

I can sum it up half of IMDB with one sentence:

Dan tries so hard to be peaceful and diplomatic, but he can't make toast without people thinking he's problematic.

Also, did anyone notice that the picture of the receipt to the Bahamas is gone from his twitter? or did he never put one? I can't remember. I remember seeing a pic but that might have been someone explaining the joke, not sure.

Dan's new twitter layout looks like a hot mess I feel like it was just a troll to change it for the sake of changing it, and he'll have a real (good) one up by next week.

Maybe this means he is back home now?? I just can't wait for him to change his tumblr theme already! It's so ugly

My guess is that he's still on holiday, and has been indulging in the ribenia (and other stronger beverages)

He's being a sneaky little minx though... that wasn't the sunset from today—though he timed it as if it were (notice the lack of clouds compared to the picture below). They probably took that 2 days ago, since it looks like he has the same shirt on as the pictures posted by Cornelia.
