He should absolutely embrace a quiff, I give it all my votes! Does anyone know where the photo above the first 'I' is from?

This week has been amazing content wise! I'm really looking forward to Dan's (and even Cat's) new video and I'm actually completely embracing Phil's 'Jenna Marbel-esque content' lately. It's fun watching people have fun! But I still sometimes miss his weird and creative side which was better expressed by more original content. On the other hand, we never know what they're working on, maybe other secret projects exhaust him creatively. Edit: spelling and wording because I just woke up

can someone please tell phil that you can, in fact, also dye your eyebrows? i mean, if he's so committed to having black hair, the least he could do is match his eyebrows with it...

I have a feeling that Phil dying his eyebrows has been attempted before...but then he just never bothered to do it again. I say black eyebrows would be quite horrific on him too.

In my wildest dreams he dyes his hair a light brown or a copper/ginger colour. I think it would look a lot nicer than black. Phil doesn't look bad with black IMO but the hairstyle he has is just terrible

I think black eyebrows might be a step too far, I quite like his light eyebrows. I was looking at Hank Green the other day and thinking his hair might be the same as Phil's natural colour, so there's an idea of how it looks (unless it is actually a darker brown). Black hair suits Phil really well, though, and it's iconic. It would be quite an end of an era if he stopped dyeing it.

Having darker eyebrows would take away from the stark contrast between his paleness and his dark hair, so basically he will look like a cartoon character.

I'm hoping for a quiff, but really like how black hair looks on Phil so I hope he keeps that.

Now that this has been chosen as the thread title, i'm going to commit blasphemy and say: the fringe suits him more than an actual quiff.
A side swept fringe looks best on his face shape, he just needs to abandon the straighteners and give it some volume.
Image
(and maybe let his shaved sides go his natural color)

Keeping the fringe has the added bonus of being able to play different characters in skits just by pushing it back.

That article was interesting. But it really kind of paints deppy in a bad light. Saying they left for the money they could make on tour is probably not true. The opportunity and adventure of a world tour and the gift it was to so many of their fans was probably just as much of a factor as the money. Dan has always said youtube was his priority.

This is very interesting, although it makes them look like they are just about the money! I wonder what really happened with Radio 1...was it that the BBC couldn't come up with enough cash to keep them?

Re: Phil's hair - I don't mind the color, he just needs to cut the fringe. I seriously can't stand the fringe. I think Phil has a problem with change as in he doesn't like it. His bedsheets have stayed the same for SO LONG! Like, he doesn't seem like someone who likes change and wants to avoid it if it can be avoided and his hair is just one of those things he doesn't wanna change. Doesn't mean he shouldn't change it.

I think he used to dye his eyebrows in the past and imo it looked fine? They didn't stand out or look cartoonish, just added to the illusion that his hair was naturally dark (which is what I thought when I first started watching them in 2012, oops).

But it's probably all about balance. Add too much dye and they stand out, too little and it's gone in a day. Speaking of, he must have to dye his hair or do his roots at least every 2 weeks. That must get tiring. I think the black really suits him but I wouldn't mind him embracing his natural hair colour

Re. Radio: I wonder how much time it took up? Because I know Dan always said they would always prioritise Youtube and never abandon it over the radio and other events. Also, did they ever offically leave the internet takeover? Or was it just the internet takeover was announced to never be returning? Did Dan and Phil do any goodbye/end of an era tweets?

I think money defo was a factor with them leaving, but I doubt it was the number one priority.

Wow that article re: BBC Radio 1 was so interesting, Ben Cooper sounded genuinely salty about dnp leaving the radio to tour with TATINOF. I wonder if there was actually some degree of bad blood regarding their decision to quit radio? If I remember correctly (I only re-discovered dnp in April last year, so right after they did their last show on the radio) dnp didn't initially outright declare that they'd left the radio for good, and kind of semi-hinted at maybe possibly one day returning.

I think it's pretty obvious now that they actually have no plans to return to the radio, but it does make me wonder what exactly went on behind the scenes when they decided to leave. Maybe they were contracted for longer? Who knows

re: Phil's hair - I'm Team Quiff but malday I can actually see where you're coming from, and if Phil were to style his fringe closer to the guy in that picture I think he'd look quite nice (obvs deep down I'm team Phil-can-do-what-he-wants-with-his-hair-so-long-as-he's-happy, but damn I really do think he'd benefit from a bit of a change. Although like others have said, he really doesn't seem to like change. The fact he's had the same bedsheets since he was in uni - at least ten years ago!! - astounds me).

Thanks for linking this!
Cooper says: "We've looked at YouTubers, people like Dan & Phil, but they get tempted by huge amounts of money and go off on world tours around America and Australia."
We may well see more vloggers hired to present on the station in the future, but it's likely the publicly-funded Radio 1 will struggle to compete with the money that YouTubers can make from lucrative merchandising and endorsement deals.
lol. Jobs are about making money, so going off to make more somewhere else isn't a character flaw, but the way that's phrased sounds kind of bitter? Though I guess it's better to be the dumper than the dumpee and this makes it sound pretty definitively like D&P were the dumpers. Still :sideeye: about everybody calling it a hiatus though instead of just ripping off the bandaid. And WAS it their own actual idea to cut their own schedules down to one hour once a month? Because R1 can't really be tetchy about them leaving if they (BBC) were already fucking with their (D&P) schedules and income.
Thanks and have a great day! Oil me

Ben Cooper sounds kinda bitter. Can't blame him, the Phandom is quite huge and now all of those listeners are gone. I obviously understand why Dan and Phil did what they did, but I understand why Ben sounds so salty.

Regardless of Ben’s comments that they left radio 1 for tour I still don’t see any reason why the American tour had to mean the end of the radio show. They only did the show once a month! It seems like an arrangement could have been made for them to pre-record and/or have other youtubers fill in for them, they were on tour like 10-12 weeks they will have only had a few shows falling in that time. They could have even make up their missed time slots by doing more when they got back.

IMO either D&P wanted out anyway so they used it to an excuse to leave or when they asked radio 1 if arrangements could be made to accommodate their tour radio 1 refused forcing them to choose. Which if radio 1 weren’t willing to compromise is fair enough really. Who is going to miss out on an touring their own show around America for a gig doing 12 radio shows a year?

Thanks for sharing this, Squish!

I have a real hard time with the comment on D&P, because from my perspective (and perhaps from others' here), it certainly didn't seem like they walked away with what they wanted. Be it a better schedule, an agreed upon return, or a little more money (which frankly, they're deserving of - there's only so much clout/honor/pride working at the BBC can give you before it becomes a job you want to be properly paid for). To me it seemed like the whole thing ended a little poorly. (See: Dan unceremoniously dropping his BBC FB profile pic.) Or I'm reading into all of that too much, in which case, ignore me.

What this sounds like to me is an excuse for the departure that primarily blames Dan and Phil. As fancybum noted, there's nothing inherently wrong in wanting to make more money. And also that tour was an incredible opportunity. D&P didn't have to completely drop radio once all of that came to an end and with the word "hiatus" it was almost implied they wouldn't.

I'm not gonna pretend I'm not bitter about the loss of their show. That's easily my favorite content they ever made. So maybe it's coloring how I perceive the situation, but I'm sure the BBC aren't innocent in all of this.

If I had to make a guess I'd say it was Dan and Phil's choice to walk away from the weekly show, the BBC's choice to end the monthly one when the other weeks of Internet Takeover weren't performing.

But I still don't blame them for stepping back. Maintaining a weekly three hour radio show would never have allowed them to do the book or the tour, and would have continued to tether them to one location and restrict their time for other projects. I don't know if Dan and Phil just didn't want that, or they weren't compensated enough for that - but either way, as much as I wish the radio show still existed, I hold no grudge against them.

Ok sure,'money this, money that' but can you really put a price on the constant opportunity to awkwardly touch hot celebrities/musicians? I think in that respect D&P were being a lil shortsighted and the potential for memes has suffered greatly as a result.

On the same vague conversation line, anyone got any ideas as to why Dan and Phil didn't want to host the brits this year? I remember them mentioning it in the (i think) Lighthearted Lester liveshow near the beginning, and seemed quite self depricating with their comments regarding them cancelling it and asking people (in a joking manner) to hire them for their professional hosting needs.

Was something more important occuring at the time? Did they just not want to do it again after so many years in a row? I need theories here, lads.

bbc r1 dj article: wow. not subtle in the least on salt. sodium enriched reading material. Bitterness from both controller ben cooper and the writer. Chips on shoulders that large are both sad and ridiculous. If D&P had only just left r1, maybe I'd get the hit piece, but its' been over 2 yrs(?)...and they started with a once-a-week show, then did once-a-month, not exactly a show vital to the continued existance of the channel. Kinda hard not to miss the direct rebuff at D&P when they mention "tours around America and Australia". And all that money talk, as if we are to believe that the writer and controller ben would not take advantage of opportunites that came their way. But the part that made me gasp with tears in my eyes and a heaviness in my heart was "it's likely the publicly-funded Radio 1 will struggle to compete with the money that YouTubers can make from lucrative merchandising and endorsement deals." O woe the publicly funded media, from the tax payers own money, how ungrateful and obscene of D&P to dare to walk away. (if they did the walking away or were escorted out, no one no where has confirmed anything)
Honestly, thanks controller Scott Cooper and writer Steven McIntosh, you've proved my distaste in the BBC yet again on how sanctimonious and hypocritical your people and corp are.

Phils hair vid: cute. but boring. But cute, but also boring. A couple bants. They were fun, and I was a bit bored.

re: hair Part of Phil's issue with changing his hair could be that going from black to a lighter color is a slow, difficult, damaging process.

If he wanted to do his natural sandy-ginger-ish color, he'd probably have to start with a dark brown ombre of sorts and let it grow out. Although short hair does grow quick, it'd look weird at first. But imagine! The ombre would be backwards, haha!

If he wanted to just make the whole thing brown, he runs a little more risk of newcomers having issue telling him and Dan apart. Although Dan's lack of fringe will probably help, since I'm pretty sure the matching fringes is what threw people off in the first place. He could probably strip the black to a dark brown if he really wanted to. Plus, the i-cant-tell-them-apart thing from parents etc was never much of an issue for them, really.

Honestly, it's time for the black to go, if you ask me. It just makes him look odd in this day and age, especially with the shorter haircut sorry. It also kinda hides/distracts from his face. I want to see the face!!

That review really is salty though. "Youtubers like Dan and Phil go on tours across America and Australia" wow, what a coincidence that these people like Dan and Phil do exactly what Dan and Phil specifically did next time, make your shade more subtle. Now you look like the jerk.

I don't know much about BBC Radio 1, but could it be possible that Radio 1 thought they were giving Dan and Phil the best gig of their lives? Do you think they saw it as a big charity to give the platform to them, and then were kinda smacked on their ass when Dan and Phil were able to get another great opportunity on their own? I got a little bit of this gist from the article. Thoughts?
