I'm so glad this is a topic! I can't say I follow any particular phan artist,and I'm too lazy to link personal faves, but I'm constantly blown away by how much talent and creativity there is in the phandom. The works of art that I see on tumblr actually look so legit. Obviously, that isn't unique to D&P's fanbase; of course there are bigger, mainstream fandoms who are likely to have more artists as participants. But I wonder if this is consistent among other YT fandoms. It seems that D&P, in particular, attract a crowd that have a propensity for creating, and then they encourage it with their past art contests, their Tumblr tags, TABINOF, and now with TATINOF.

D&P have basically been the subjects of my art for the past year, so I guess I am a "phan artist". Something that's always stuck with me was in the latest Tumblr tag when a set of lovely watercolor paintings came up, and Dan wondered what it was about him that inspired people to draw or paint him like that. I feel like I can't articulate the answer to that, but I know there is something I really enjoy about drawing and painting them. It would be cool to read any other IDB phan artist's take on that, though. I know there are a few.

Finally, back at You-know-where, there was a brief convo about who was more difficult to draw: Dan or Phil . Most people said Phil, but I actually have waaay more difficulty capturing the details in Dan's face than with Phil. I guess Phil's features are a bit more distinct, so it's easier for me to translate it into a way that obviously reads as Phil, while with Dan, there are so many soft, subtle lumps and folds to his face that I'm constantly having to go back and make adjustments before I feel it looks like Dan.

To the bolded: Yes, absolutely, but not in the way that the Phandom does it. For one, YTer fandoms that far exceed the Phandom in creative output are LPer oriented. Obviously, more creative people will be drawn to a creator that celebrate an experience with a game then a creator who talks about themselves. That said, because D&P are vloggers and not gamers, it really is curious how so many people are inclined to create things about them. You really don't see much fanart for other vloggers at a similar scope.

What I think draws in these "phan artists" is basically the same reason any other person would create fanart for anything: To show appreciation for their subject (in other words, to get noticed) and to interact with the fandom in any way they can (which would explain why there's so much art for popular AUs). In a way, this could go back to the "why are D&P is popular?" discussion.

Anyway, to make my post more in line with this thread: I love phanart, but I don't really follow any fanartists. I mostly like looking at stylistic, abstract works rather than anything realistic, but that's just me.
