I just really cannot believe Phil was like yes I'm going to tell everyone that I have a very niche taste in men(?) for 9 minutes and 30 seconds, and my audience will enjoy it.

 Literally my impression, but he's so cute.

ALTHOUGH, I completely stand with soveinco about the singing Efron/Dan! I was so curious to catch a subtle reference to Dan here and there but there were none? :( And that singing thing completely killed any hope

I took the captain america/thor meme that says best friend as him trolling us tbh. but maybe that was just me!

I need to rewatch that part!

And yeah, I know he's just being funny ahah I would simply find it more funny (engaging/loving) if he had mentioned Dan in this video about gay crushes - just for the sake of shipping them, as the awful shipper I am ahah

Btw, can you access his social media through his video? I just tried and I can't. I just watched Evan's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmQYskXD1EQ ) about him having the same problem and I wonder if Phil is experiencing it too!

"best friend" is the wording from the original meme image, so not phil-specific, unfortunately! :D

My other question is . . . did we already get an earlier explanation for why Steve the pigeon is named Steve? Or am I to assume he named the pigeon after Captain America?? :o

Yeah I've seen the meme, just thought the joke was that he specifically edited pictures of himself, Thor and Captain America onto that meme which Is totally irrelevant to a story about fancying captain america more than thor, unless it's to joke about 'best friends'?

Loving that Steve is named after captain america, a pigeon called thor would have been far too embarrassing to call the vet about! :D

My takeaway from the video: If Dan needs motivation to exercise, maybe his goal can be to be able to pick Phil up to smoothly sweep him off his feet like the guy from B99 could.

Also, Phil on Captain America, "but we're talking about my taste here, not his physical attributes" and the Phil, 30 seconds later "He's getting an A and that A is for america's ass."

I really want Dan to talk about any gay crushes he hasn’t already on tomorrow’s stereo. My biggest take away from Phil’s video was that since he’s advertising the stereo shows, they must be going to do them longer than just tomorrow (but that’s all that’s currently listed).

Please tell me that the new cover of Dan's book is an early April Fools joke because this ain't it.

Like having his face on it just gives generic celeb book vibes. Which is fine if it's a personal memoir type of thing but it's not... right?

That cover looks so amateurish, it’s giving me chest pain. And yeah I know that having his face on it could help selling the book but it really doesn’t any make any sense if it’s just a generic self-help book.. if that’s what it is. I still don’t know what’s it’s deal, if I am being honest.

The video gave me a few good laughs! I love that he's catching up on 10 years of gay content, I fully support it :gayaf:

The cover is... not great. I suspect it's the publisher who thinks a book with his face on it will sell better but... it looks like a poster for a motivational speech at a conference.

Yeah I'm really not a fan of that cover at all :? It's on the harper collins american website too (https://www.harpercollins.com/products/ ... 3601589282) but not on the UK (https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/yo ... 1879920718) so I'm selfishly hoping that they are doing two covers which is pretty normal for the different markets and I get to keep the nice graphic one...

I'm sure Phil has a list of video ideas he couldn't do till he came out and I'm loving it, I'd love if he discussed either in a video or maybe better suited to Stereo LGBTQIA+ films, TV, books and youtubers he loves, particularly things from when he was younger and the impact it has to see yourself represented and maybe the impact of negative representation. It might sound weird but as someone who's the same age as Phil I've always wondered if he saw some of the same things and how he felt about them.

I was surprised Dan's face wasn't on the book in the first place because 95% of people who are going to buy it are buying it became it's Dan's book. I didn't like the first cover either honestly both give me self published on Amazon vibes, it just doesn't look very Dan to me.

Well, at the end of pinof 8 we can see Dan sweep Phil up off his feet, if not exactly smoothly.

I'd much rather have it be a personal memoir, but the subtitle doesn't really suggest that, does it.

Oh, yikes. I’m definitely not a fan of it, if that’s the official cover. :/ I mean.... Look, if Dan likes it, then fine.

The further along we go, the more I do get the impression this leans more memoir and less self-help. Which isn't what we were necessarily sold, but like... maybe makes more sense for Dan? So, I agree with you, lefthandedism.

Like, I’m beginning to think this book is a lot like “10% Happier”, in which case his face being on it makes sense.

The graphic is really not my taste but I do see a lot of Dan's taste in it. I hate his Tumblr/current aesthetic on Twitter/graphic for merch ads because it looks so amateurish to me ahah but he loves it! He completely loves it.

Could he be changing his mind about making it more personal than just self-help because of the criticism surrounding self-help books when it comes to mental health?
A self-help book that promises you to make you happier... is so cringy because it won't and it is just a marketing point for simple minded people which most of his fans are not.

I also would rather prefer the focus on him as 90's British gay man: British-ness characterises his life so much, politically an socially, that I would found it so much interesting and profound than a simple 5 tips to improve sleep pattern - drink more water.

I did see a tweet from the publisher a few months ago describing the book as a toolkit so I don’t really know what to expect but all the official language around the book makes it sound exactly like a self-help book

The copy on the website, now the subtitle, etc., don't play up the memoir aspect, but he also went out of his way to emphasize that there IS stuff about his life in the book in the "something we want to tell you" video (presumably because he knows that's what a fan audience cares more about, whereas the publisher is presumably trying to appeal to everyone else as well).
Dan: HarperCollins were basically like "But Dan, what if you do a book that is about the stuff that helps people but you actually make it enjoyable and easy to read, and it's all about you and your life story."

Phil: I've actually learnt so many thing that I could be doing better, and learning some stuff about you as well.
Dan: Would you say it was funny?
Phil: Yeah! It was--
Dan: Would you say it was juicy?
Phil: The thing is, it's funny, but also helpful--
Dan: --I mean, it's full of juicy tea about me . . . Like I've been doing for the last ten years on YouTube, I'm just splicing myself open saying "look at my insides and laugh at my pain, you're welcome." You might go in wanting to sip the tea from Dan's life and then come away going "Damn it, I accidentally learned how to completely transform my life and now I'm happier and healthier. Ugh! You got me, Dan!"
I feel like now we know what all his annoying notes to the designer were: "can it be 3% darker?" Nightmare author, hahaha :D

ETA: Random publishing tidbit: our ship dates for our May on-sale dates are all in the next few weeks, so the US edition is probably either printed and ready to go, or will be in the next few weeks. (idk what ship schedules in the UK are like, since I don't know where they print their books.)

I'm having a deja vu back to when II was announced and no one understood what the show was going to be about or what the concept was  and then Dan would go on a ramble that just left people more confused.

Tbh I've watched II a few times and I still don't 100% understand the concept...

My honest opinion: definitely don't love his face on the cover. I didn't love the graphics/color of the other one but given the two as options yeah I prefer that previous one.

My opinion at 4 am when I woke up because my period had started and decided to scroll twitter until I felt sleepy again: intense sympathetic anxiety at the idea of Dan seeing backlash and remembering the backlash from the TABINOF trailer and hoping enough people do genuinely like it that he gets good feedback and hoping that if he sees all the negative feedback he's in a better place to cope with it because I got the impression back in 2016 it was a pretty crushing thing for him. Four am me was having some feelings, friend.

But in the reality of day my thoughts are more streamlined. Bad cover, but probably wasn't something he had final say in. Even if he got creative input if they approached him to write a book they did it for his name/face recognition and therefore them requiring his name and face big and bold on it at least in the bigger market makes sense to me even if I don't like it. I think it's very hard for me to muster a passionate opinion about it because I'm fully aware that face on the cover or not, this isn't a book I'd have ever bought if Dan wasn't writing it.

I snorted at this but it's only because..... it's true. I definitely still don't quite get it. My theory on II is that it really all just boiled down to "This is maybe the last time we're gonna make ourselves-as-a-duo the focal point of our careers, so we're letting you control what we do. You're welcome."

Gotta tell ya, I had the same thought. Which is, in part, why my post said, "But if he likes it, then that's fine."

It's his book. His vision. Frankly, he could take that wine glass, half-naked instagram of his and make it the cover and I'd still read it, so my opinion matters ZILCH.

One could even argue that the photo does a good job of pulling the attention away from Dan a little? It doesn't entirely look like recognizable Dan, ya know? It looks like a broody dude and it's about mental health. So I could see someone from the outside still being willing to pick it up.

Re the cover: I'm was expecting to see the co-author's name on the cover, but maybe since the book was announced the role of that person has changed to maybe more of a supervisor of the content rather than an author?

A project like this is gonna have people respond to it with all kinds of reactions -- to be honest, I'm not particularly looking forward to that. Not that I want uncritical responses, but I might just sit out fandom for the week the book is released because there's only so much argument I can take. And if I'm feeling anxiety about that, oh boy, I'm sure Dan is feeling it 100% more.

Overall, I just continue to be most invested in watching Dan stretch and grow creatively, and I hope Dan is giving himself credit for that.

I think given that it says 'in consultation with' and not that the other person did any of the actual writing, it'll be an inside the book credit and probably not on the actual cover.

I feel the same about the potential reactions. It's also not that I want uncritical ones, I just want... compassion in the criticism. And I don't always trust phandom with that.
