Long time no post  I had a bit of a year last year. I think since I last posted I've got married which is just a bit weird to think about.

I may have gone a bit overboard and pre-ordered the book 3 times. In my (slight) defence, one was with a Waterstone's gift voucher I got for Christmas, one is a kindle edition so I don't destroy my hardback, and one is an audiobook because it was £4 on audible and I've recently got more into audiobooks. But the total cost of those two was still less than what it would've been for me to buy the hardback.

I'm looking forward to starting it this morning, even though I'm putting down another book (The Big Short) which I'm really enjoying to read it.

I liked the Waterstone's live stream last night. It was fun! He read out my question! - are you going to burn that jumper? BUT he continued with his track record of absolutely butchering my name

I digress, I'm actually really excited to read this book. I've struggled a lot during the last year, and it feels like it's coming at the right time to help me address some of my more burning issues.

(being out with your wife and having people yell at you for not social distancing with your friends is SUPER fun and not at all putting me in a weird headspace. Add to that everyone at work calling her my PaRtNeR and ugh...)

Congrats on getting married Sparkle 🤩🤩

I'm not getting the book but I'm enjoying hearing about it. I also think in the last week Dan's book promotions have amped enough to correlate with him saying we'll all be sick of him being everywhere haha (not that I am, but he's definitely doing more promotions now, except on his own channel 🤣)

I ended up caving and ordering the audio book on Audible as well. The tracking notifications for my physical copy have been pretty weird so I have no clue when that's going to come in. I do prefer reading physical books though so I'm kind of tempted to do what @sparkle did and order another copy to read and leave my signed one perfect...

Something I found interesting that might be of interest to you guys as well: I asked my mum this morning (who works in a library and is 60+) if they're getting any copies in today. She searched it and ended up watching the promo video having absolutely no idea who 'Dan and Phil' are and now she's really interested and wants to borrow my copy once I've read it! Actually, that's just given me the perfect excuse for the extra copy

Anyway, point being that his goal to reach a wider audience is working! I find it really hard to get out of the mindset of someone who knows so much about him to try and see the promos from a neutral perspective so I was really happy on his behalf that it's sparking interest from someone so far out of his usual demographic.

Two things about Dan's book after flipping through a physical copy today:

1. A lot of the things he's written are techniques and coping mechanisms my therapist has taught me, which makes me happy that they will teach a wider audience as my therapist has taught me and helped me so much. Way to go Dan!

2. I flipped to the acknowledgements to see if Phil was mentioned and read "to my partner, Jon" and I swear my life flashed before my eyes until I saw it was the psychologist who wrote that, not Dan. Need to utilise his book for the panic attack it caused me

I've typed up the Q&A from the audiobook since I realised I could just listen to that first - have PM'd to those that asked. Do with it what you will, put it on your website, stick it on tumblr, just please don't blame me.

If you were thinking about getting the audiobook it's really nice to hear him, very comforting for the serious parts of the book.

It doesn't have an index on audible so you have no idea what chapters 1 through 64 even mean, so I'll put the ones that are the bonuses under the cut with a spoiler so don't read if you don't want it spoiled!

Chapter 62:
I want to hate him. I can't believe in a serious audiobook he has done this lmao. It is full troll anti asmr.
Starting with dis gus tang mouth noises, then he says close your eyes unless you are driving ffs, he eats some crisps very loudly, drinks some water, has a coughing fit, reviews a disgusting black cherry candle. Now this is very funny but to listen to it, especially when he was tickling the mic and saying tickle tickle aaaaaah so gross I yanked my AirPods out and chucked them across the kitchen. Dan is an evil little troll and my ears and I may never recover from this.

Chapter 63: The Q&A

Chapter 64: Ending bit but if you keep listening a bit there's a bloopers reel which is a good minute or so of him getting the words wrong, singing random nonsense, confusing a candle with a cactus, humming and hitting his head/hat on the mic and then being confused what happened.

I'm sure someone will stick this on youtube or tumblr at some point though.

I got curious and checked -- my local library system already has his book on order, which was nice to see.

I really appreciated him saying this (cos same, and sometimes it feels like a lonely place to be when looking at social media).

Also just remembering, Dan is donating £10,000 to Young Minds to mark the publication <3
[thought it worth mentioning again here, as I don't think any recent media coverage mentioned it, and presumably Dan won't either]

My local big bookstore only two had copies, and I don't know if that's because they didn't order many or people actually bought the rest? I didn't expect them to have a ton but only two seems not a lot, considering it hadn't even come out yet technically. (And since I have zero idea when my IRL one will be here - only received someone else's shipping info not my own - yes I went ahead and bought it. Since I have an extra now if anyone wants to trade a US for a UK cover, hit me up.)

i'm still reading but i really like it so far. it's gentle and accessible. i think i would recommend this to anyone who is struggling and needs a practical guide before diving deep into all the other various psychology and therapy style books.

i'm so proud of this lil peanut.

Considering what he says in the book about not being able to really enjoy the success after TABINOF and the tour, I really hope this one is a redeeming experience for him. :rainbowtears:

I know people have different opinions and enthusiasms for this project, but it's quite an accomplishment to have an idea, develop it, execute it, and send it out into the world. I think for creative people especially, being able to make something is so important and satisfying.

(John Green has also done some crying about his book and the support of his brother over on Vlogbrothers if you are wanting some extra book-release-day emotion).

I've been listening to the book during work today and ugh, I'm so proud of him. It's really well made and you can tell he put in a lot of work in to it.

I'm so proud of him for getting that big outlet attention!

But also, god, he rambles when he's nervous. I love Dan when he's comfy and in his element (the two book events were a fantastic example) but the nerves are coming out strong in the others. I am sure none of this is super fun for him despite how well he's pulling it off, and I hope he enjoys many tasty rewards for all the effort today.

Strong head canon of Phil checking in between interviews with chocolate and snacks. <3

Unrelated, but I wonder how clued in his family was prior to publication, particularly his mom—you get a sense she wants to so badly be Team Dan (as much as he’ll allow), but without having read the book yet, I know there’s sensitive family issues and trauma brought up, so it begs the question how does his mom feel about the book and Dan’s effort, especially being a subject (even indirectly) in the book and as it pseudo-relates to her profession. Hope it doesn’t create more strife.

Such an ironic(?) turn-out that two of his closest relations, mom (therapist and “confidence coach” catering to the corporate crowd) and brother (happiness and wellness through exercise and diet coach) both associated with mental health and wellness as their occupation. Makes you wonder just what the heck that upbringing must have been like.

I’m also pretty interested in how his family is taking it. I feel like he must have asked permission from at least his mum to include stories that involve his family life if he was wanting to maintain any kind of relationship with them. It’s the kind of thing that, even if they chose not to read his book, the likelihood of people they know reading it is very high and it would be a bit rough to not warn them of what friends, family and strangers may be reading about them. I also haven’t started the book yet so idk how in depth he actually goes into these topics and maybe it’s a complete non-issue.

On the topic of other family members working in the sphere of mental health and therapy, I’ve definitely been noticing some potential digs in his interviews about the current lack of trust in science and the book being rooted in actual, proven methods and seeking (emphasis on) professional help comments which are all exactly what he should be saying but I’m guessing certain relationships aren’t holding up so great with the extreme difference in tackling the topic.

There's also a crazy uncle dig - which is reminiscent of a comment he made in a liveshow years ago about a "crazy uncle" that gave him a conspiracy theory book. So I'm guessing he either thinks there's no way that uncle will read it or he's not concerned about hurt feelings there either.

Wow, this interviewer clearly watched "Basically I'm Gay" for the first time the night before in preparation for this interview - and she is not through the emotional response journey yet. She's got tears in her eyes throughout the interview, and when she talks about intrusive fans and not outing people before they are ready there is righteous fury in her voice. I think she's gone full Dan-stan. I love it. Dan ate it up too, good for him. He deserves to be celebrated after his hard work.

So Dan wants the book to go to people even outside the phandom and he has made the book thinking of them, yet I wonder how many pp outside of it won't think as my friend just said, when I mentioned a famous Youtuber I follow has written a mental health book of tips "did he study psychology?" and was not that convinced when I added that he had written it w the help of a 'professional'.

I think when you present it as "a famous Youtuber wrote a book about mental health" then it's gonna be met with more skepticism than if a random person who doesn't know Dan stumbles upon this book. So there is potential for outsiders to finds this and like it. Also, I'm sure there are plenty mental health books and articles out there that people eat up despite not having a shred of research behind them.
