Dan & Phil Part 100: full-time internet homowners

As the topic of Dan's family was brought up on the previous page....

I've noticed that he always speaks about his father in past tense - do we know if his dad is still alive? Especially the way he spoke about him in his book, it really stuck out to me.

(Btw, hi. Long time lurker here who finally decided to make an account).

I don’t remember exactly where but I’m sure he mentioned his dad in an interview recently? Only for a second about his response to BIG but it was jarring because he doesn’t really ever talk about him.

Don’t want to get too gossipy, but…

I suspect his parents are divorced/ separated. I don’t have any information that isn’t public, but he was removed/resigned as director from the company Karen runs a few years back according to UK business filing records. Given that context if true seems to fit with Dan’s silence on the subject of all things dad (especially in the present sense).

A little late to this but I definitely think his parents are not together anymore. Because a while ago (not sure where this could be found again to confirm) I think Dan mentioned something about going to "his mom's place" or something like that. He doesn't seem to mention his dad other than watching F1 with him in the past. But I also wonder how his dad reacted to him coming out. Because I think the only reactions we really got were from his mom and grandma. But I've never stayed on top of gossip unless it was fed to me So please, be feel free to add to my knowledge on this topic.

Also I'm trying to decide whether to listen to the audiobook now (I'm gonna join audible and use that free trial) or wait for the book to arrive... which will be in a month and a half because of course it's not coming to my country T_T.

I ended up using a free trial to grab the audiobook and while I do like hearing him read it, I'm finding that I also tend to zone out a fair bit. His voice is very soothing I'd say it's definitely worth the listen if you don't want to wait a month and a half but I decided about an hour into the audio to read it first so I actually take in what he's saying. I'm also not really an audiobook person so it could just be a 'me' problem!

uhh great, thanks! i absolutely love audiobooks but i think i'll take your advice and wait, just cause usually when i listen to short audiobooks (this one is probably less than 8 hours, right?) i tend to devour them and i want to take my time with this one and actually digest it. also with the physical copy i will be able to fill it with post its.

So, I finished the book last night (on my Kindle, my physical copy is on my beside table and is being treated like a newborn baby). I've also given the audiobook a crack in my car, and I've flicked through the physical copy - though mine was inexplicably covered in glue when it arrived?

Verdict: kindle edition is the worst version. The physical copy is very pretty, and will be easier to use as intended. The audiobook (through Audible) would be better if the chapters were labelled, but Dan has a very pleasing voice.

Other verdicts: Oh my God do I want Dan to write more. My ONLY criticism is I wish it had been longer, give me 450 pages. I absolutely loved it.

I've actually tried some of the things he mentioned when I had an almighty panic attack the other day. As someone who's therapist ghosted her when my grandma died, I wish I was lying when I said that, it's also given me a lot to think about in terms of what I need going forward. And in multiple parts I felt very called out by him.

So yeah. Loved it.

But also, god, he rambles when he's nervous. I love Dan when he's comfy and in his element (the two book events were a fantastic example) but the nerves are coming out strong in the others. I am sure none of this is super fun for him despite how well he's pulling it off, and I hope he enjoys many tasty rewards for all the effort today.

Unrelated, but I wonder how clued in his family was prior to publication, particularly his mom—you get a sense she wants to so badly be Team Dan (as much as he’ll allow), but without having read the book yet, I know there’s sensitive family issues and trauma brought up, so it begs the question how does his mom feel about the book and Dan’s effort, especially being a subject (even indirectly) in the book and as it pseudo-relates to her profession. Hope it doesn’t create more strife.

Such an ironic(?) turn-out that two of his closest relations, mom (therapist and “confidence coach” catering to the corporate crowd) and brother (happiness and wellness through exercise and diet coach) both associated with mental health and wellness as their occupation. Makes you wonder just what the heck that upbringing must have been like.

I’m also pretty interested in how his family is taking it. I feel like he must have asked permission from at least his mum to include stories that involve his family life if he was wanting to maintain any kind of relationship with them. It’s the kind of thing that, even if they chose not to read his book, the likelihood of people they know reading it is very high and it would be a bit rough to not warn them of what friends, family and strangers may be reading about them. I also haven’t started the book yet so idk how in depth he actually goes into these topics and maybe it’s a complete non-issue.

On the topic of other family members working in the sphere of mental health and therapy, I’ve definitely been noticing some potential digs in his interviews about the current lack of trust in science and the book being rooted in actual, proven methods and seeking (emphasis on) professional help comments which are all exactly what he should be saying but I’m guessing certain relationships aren’t holding up so great with the extreme difference in tackling the topic.

There's also a crazy uncle dig - which is reminiscent of a comment he made in a liveshow years ago about a "crazy uncle" that gave him a conspiracy theory book. So I'm guessing he either thinks there's no way that uncle will read it or he's not concerned about hurt feelings there either.

that uncle might be the one he mentioned in daniel and depression, who was bipolar and who is now dead. back then, he kinda said that in a way that could seem a little insensitive to his family, but maybe joking around like that is just something they take lightly in his family.

My goal is to start reading the book tomorrow and I'd love to discuss it either in the main thread or elsewhere. I really enjoyed the discussion we had a few pages back about differences in how people view the medical profession and expertise and so I'm looking forward to digging into the book and seeing people's different reactions to it.

I don't think it's the same one - the jokes about the 'crazy' uncle seem to be centered around conspiracy theories and fringe beliefs, not actual mental health. I think he'd be more sensitive about something actually mental health related.

just a small note to say that the chapters are labelled in my copy of the audiobook (also Audible). It looks like this:

the sound production with the audiobook is top-notch. There are soothing instrumental transitions between chapters/parts and sound effects to help illustrate points. there's a "go to horny jail" boink sound effect that is used more than once that is actually hilarious.

I have two physical copies coming (one from IRL that I preordered on day 1 and one from the john green thing) but lord knows how long it will be before they end up in canada. august? :p

I do hope they are finally moving in but I also hope they're getting to spend some time with the Lesters first. A reunion spent moving boxes doesn't sound like all that much fun!
