I keep seeing this floating around today. It's a definite fact that Dan will get bad reviews somewhere so that doesn't particularly upset me, but the whole casual approach of 'we're ex-phans that got drunk and read it' really does not match the hostility in this review. Did Dan come into their home? Did he steal their dog and fuck their dad, or... something? I will never understand the mentality that because you moved on to something else as as your primary interest, you need to find fault and express negativity toward what you left behind.

@Shan - nothing against will young, I just haven't heard his name for about 10 years so I had no idea he was even still famous!
Oooh gotcha! His wiki was super British so I assumed he was well known in your neck of the woods.

And I love that their new place lasted at max a couple of weeks before they started destroying it with their clumsiness (that we know of anyway). I desperately need a moving vlog.

My theory is that the people who turn so violently nasty towards a thing they used to enjoy are just embarrassed of how they behaved as a member of that specific fandom. Whether they were a toxic fandom member and can’t take responsibility for their actions so place it in the fandom itself or they can’t handle that they were once a younger, carefree child/teen who drew cat whiskers on their face. That seems to come up a lot on Twitter as a kind of shameful confession of ex-phans for some reason. God forbid you look back on the innocent ways you expressed your joy and excitement over a fandom with fondness right?

Yeah I don’t see any of the things you have pointed out. The photo was taken in the room they have showed us.

Why does the "reviewer" consider masturbation an inappropriate subject for teens 11-17? Is said reviewer a Puritan or perhaps a time travel from 1953? Nearly everybody engages in masturbation by the age of 11 and being able to discuss it in regards to personal health (both mental and physical) is crucial.

Absolutely. These "reviewers" strike me as still being very young - the stage at which you feel you have to denounce every childish thing you every did to prove you are an adult.

Eh, I might be in the minority here but if an ex-phannie decided to read the book and gave their opinions on it, I don’t see the problem here. I mean, I saw so many phannies buying this book and then admitting they didn’t even bother to open it. Is that better? Would Dan love that more? Idk. Let people say what they want, who cares honestly.

Hank Green discussed this in a tweet last year in regards to people being awful about John's books. He said "Yes...I'm aware that there's a tweet going around that says my brother's work sucks. You can stop sending it to me. As people grow up, they often find themselves resenting their former passions as a way of redefining themselves. It's not a big deal."

I do wonder why some people go to such nasty extremes with it though. Is it a maturity issue? Insecurity? Needing to feel superior to those who still enjoy the thing? Like that review of Dan's book, it just seems mean spirited and bitter, not constructive at all. It's behavior like *that* that I would be embarrassed about and want to redefine myself away from.

I would agree if it was written as a genuine opinion but some of the things they complain about are literally not in the book. They obviously had pre-formed opinions before they’d started reading so they’ve twisted what was written to fit in with their preconceived narrative.

ETA: I do agree that people posting positive reviews without having read it is also not remotely useful, nor do I imagine they’d be appreciated by Dan. Probably a bit off-putting to the random non-phan swinging by goodreads to see if it’s worth the read.

See, I understand that, i just don’t see what’s the point of talking about the review, like.. the author of it is not gonna take it off just because people don’t like it, so why keep giving it so much importance? Just to be mad? I feel like it’s getting more buzz that review than Dan’s book itself, lol.

There's so much general phandom hate out there whenever I decide to take a peek at deppy tags on other sites that sometimes it just feels nice to have a little rant and acknowledge that the fairly extreme level of forced negativity some of these people have towards deppy and the phandom itself isn't really warranted. For the amount of negativity that's out there on twitter etc., I don't think it comes up here all that often.

I'll take this opportunity to beg for more thoughts or reviews of YWGTTN on here or the book thread though!

I agree with glitterintheair.

They are definitely just having a laugh because they must not have much going on in their lives, which always makes so sad. Phandoms are a happy place, but they also reveal how much loneliness and isolation there is in society, and giving them more publicity simply fuels their (unfortunately false) feelings of fulfilment, which further distances them from real life/themselves, creating a pleasurable addiction. And the same goes if they are kids. Although, kids have luckily more strength/opportunities to get out of that zone.

And I also agree with Shan about the YWGTTN thread! I had started a message and couldn't complete it but please you readers keep going! <3

That’s definitely it for me.

That review wasn’t a review of the book it was someone trying to make the biggest spectacle they could of their dislike for what they used to enjoy.

Additionally, I just always find it interesting to study the anthropology of fandom like that. I’m not out here sharing that review to defended Dan’s book it’s just sometimes worth sharing to me in a community like this where we discuss things not just that Dan and phil do but that people do in reaction (be it negative or positive) to them.

Does anyone else on the internet still mention Shrek or is it singularly Dan at this point? Idk what's going on with that instagram story but hey, he's alive.

I am intrigued who Yogi the dog is that they've both followed. Does anyone know? Is it Adam's dog? I'll be honest I kind of don't actually care but I'm so bored without a Phil viddy and so hot as the aircon's broken in 2 rooms that it's either go into an instagram deep dive about an unknown dog or go and sit in the fridge at this point.

Unimportant question that I can't remember if I've already heard the answer to but has it been confirmed yet that the new deppy place is an apartment and not a house? Whenever I think of buying a house I think somewhere detached with a yard but that's my suburban upbringing talking. I can see the appeal of an apartment considering I think it was @fruitcriminals? who said someone already knows where they live. Not to say that that person would spread the info but if someone saw them that quickly, it's likely that sooner rather than later their new address will make the rounds. There must be some comfort living in an apartment complex where even if someone knows you live there, it's much less likely they know the number of your flat and even if they did, likely couldn't pass the security measures to get to your door.

Other info I'm inexplicably interested in; does anyone know how much they were paying for their double-apartment living situation? I heard that the main apartment listing was found after they moved out but the only posts I saw floating around after the fact excluded the price. Just a bit curious and nosey!

I’m sure they purchased in London, but there is a part of me that secretly was hoping they were buying a country home if only so I could get posts about walks on pretty country lanes and Phil’s encounters with sheep and birds.

There are detached houses in London!

But I do agree that perhaps buying a flat gives them more security. Not to mention that growing up in detached houses, flats must seem so cool and edgy for them! ahah

Okay it's that time of year where I'm making the playlists for 30 hours of Dan and I always love the suggestions I get here so I gotta ask.. what video has your favorite Dan in it? I don't mean your favorite "Dan video" - it can be anything - a Phil video, a gaming video, on someone else's channel, an interview, something from SAP or the radio. Just like, what makes you think quintessential Dan, where Dan shines the most and makes you love him lots.

To me this sounds like someone trying to overcompensate for being a super cringe fan once and thinking they can cover up their embarrassing past by trying to be super critical (but really just covering it up with their embarrassing present). I've seen this happen in other fandoms. Also they probably didn't even read it closely enough to know that he worked on the book along with a psychologist who they also managed to indirectly insult in the review.
Also saying that the demographic is 11-17 (which I don't think it is) and saying that the masturbation section therefore doesn't belong there? Because apparently only people older than 17 masturbate?

edit: I read the rest of the discussion on this page after sending my post so I see most of you agreed, so I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this.

Once out of curiosity I took a peak into the anti tag on tumblr to see whether there is anyone saying any shit about D&P and what they'd even criticize and the one post I remember was someone hating on them purely because they used to be obsessed with them and now they were judging other obsessed and invasive fans. So really, in many fandoms it usually boils down to "I was you once and now I'm embarrassed so I'm gonna shit on you to look more mature and superior because I got over this obsession and you haven't."
