so some people on twitter have been imagining answers of Dan and Phil at M&G where they would be super honest or tell something outrageous instead of their in brand™ answers. Some of my favs:

Things that make Dan happy:
1. Not having to hug strangers.
2. Being held to no rigid schedule for sleep, work, or recreation.
3. Casually being more successful than youtubers he feels morally superior to.

Things that make Phil happy:
1. Yanking voldy reuploads.
2. Accidentally ruining select clothing items of Dan's in the wash.
3. Casually being way-the-fuck-richer than everyone that mocked him in his early youtube comments.

I'm in a weird mood and it's late af over here, but I was quietly laughing at this for at least 5 minutes.

Then I looked at the tweets daphenaxa posted and my giggles wouldn't stop. Some of my faves:

is it just me or does anyone else feel like there's a huge disconnection between part of the phandom we see online and most of the people that show up at meet ups for example? like how can the stuck in 2011 cat whiskers people exist next to the actually not cringy more self aware part of the phandom? idk, most of the fandoms i've been part of had been a lot more uuuuuuuh homogeneous? than the phandom

Those imagined quotes are kind of funny, but I don't see them as honest answers. Definitely more on the outrageous side, and some on the side of crude. The only 'honest' one might be the Dan hating writing things down b/c of his handwriting.

I can think of three factors. About the heterogeneity of the phandom I think the time you have been in the phandom actually plays a huge part. Like at first I would say people are more "normal fans" they are liking the content and dying over the cuteness and stuff but through interaction with the phandom itself and immersion in the phandom culture and bants but also with getting to know Dan and Phil's whole universe and histories and you know tics and flaws etc. people become more self aware and ironic while still being stuck and becoming a bigger and bigger
so I would say the cat whiskery special snowflakes probably have more chance to be newer fans (but it doesn't mean newer fans are gonna be like that automatically).

I also think in their content, Dan and Phil actually have an incredible talent for ambiguity. Like honestly I think really young or more innocent people can watch them and think they are cute and funny and then older nose perverts or self aware teens can laugh at their dirty innuendos and analyse the moment they are more real but usually passing off as a joke. I think they have this ability to have a double entendre on their content so that two groups of widely different people can both like them.

Finally for the difference with the persons at the meet ups. I actually think all those peeps being real and ironic on twitter are exactly the same that type in capslock that they "are so tall" and post cutesy picture and text posts about Dan and Phil being angels. Because at the end of the day, I would say the majority of us all really like deppy and so when we meet them or go see the show, the full on takes over.

like I have never read anything abt the llama/placenta/whiskers/etc fans being bullied or that they felt bad for expressing themselves either with the cat whiskers or dinasour/lion onesies, that's kinda cool

I love this, I didn't notice this before. I wouldn't classify that as a 'shoulder rub' but more of one of those 'touch your shoulder to signal to you that you have to move over but I don't need to speak' kind of things? if I'm making sense? I do that all the time with my friends (girls) but just like you guys said I never see guys act quite so gentle like that so now my mind is filled with them doing little gentle touches like that at home.

I am loving Phil's breakfast food tweets because I still remember one long road trip my husband and I went on and he had, like a billion things to do for work and his hobbies and stuff and my brain was full of "fuck this", and "where next?" and "bacon" and "waffles". If twitter'd been a big thing back then I'd've had 4 weeks of nothing but breakfast food. (Still better than the previous road trip where I was 67% Taco Bell by the end of it).

I find this stuff all really interesting and I think another factor is the nature of YouTube—in that videos from way back (apart from the privated ones ) are just as easy as ones from, say, last year? I think the disconnect in the phandom is mirrored by a huge disconnect in Dan—I actually find it so hard to believe that 2009 Dan and 2016 Dan are the same person. Phil on the other hand is apparently unchanging. So people can be taking 2016 as a sort of starting point, or the 2009 version or anything in between, but if it wasn't all so easily accessible on YouTube, the cat whiskers/placenta part of the phandom would surely be less numerous.
