I can't be the only one who thinks Dan is going to regret perpetuating the "Dan is a stoner" meme, right? It's very cringe, imo. (Not being a stoner, just Dan's participation)

Yeah I do hope this joke will not be for too long, it is such as inside joke that "outsiders" may not understand the story behind it and take it differently

Browsing tumblr and there were younger fans actually thinking he was actually smoking tobacco or the devil's lettuce. But some apparently concerned parents also apparently thought Deppy was smoking and a stoner.
Trigger Warning :
Like that is an inhaler fam chill, that's ain't any vape pen I've ever seen before.
I mean the 'we get it you vape' and 'vape nation' comments on his ig and twitter were funny for a hot minute but that's it.

I get the concern that some younger fans won't may not get the joke, and some moral panic is to be expected whenever you skate the thin ice of 'memes' and 'internet culture', but i'm just happy that he's joking about something that isn't kids show material.
If they only joke about safe subjects and avoid saying anything that will possibly be misinterpreted by young fans and parents, you get bland jokes, kill your creativity, probably get misunderstood eventually anyway and ultimately build an audience that expects only your self-censored humor.
Also, if they never take a risk how are they ever going to get out of your box as child entertainer. So while it might every single time sound as the smartest thing to keep beating the same bush (pun intended) you're ultimately cornering yourself. Considering they aren't going to be able to keep up this act forever (and probably don't want too) they do well to keep their appeal alive to other older fans too. A good chunk of their fans probably grew older with them (at least this is usually the case for other youtubers) so i'm expecting a lot of twenty somethings are their fans too. Those could take a weed joke.
Their appeal is it now is pretty 'mixed' anyway. The shoutout to Hank in Entertainment Weekly tells me how Dan would like everyone sees the concept: best friends who want to stimulate a sense of community. While i agree that's what it boils down too in reality sex appeal, their presumed relationship and the awesome power of hormones on teens is certainly one of the main drivers of their 'brand' too. So you could say there are 'problematic' aspects to their popularity anyway.

It all depends on the direction they want to take their professional lives into but i certainly welcome any move away from the PG 13 label. To me, the screaming and the 30 sec, 50 dollars meet & greets are the really cringy parts.

Where the frick is the thanks button when I need it to all of this. The only thought that I would add is that one more thing that became beyond cringey to me lately has to be the dumbing-down and memefying of the existential crisis thing.

I honestly don’t really see how joking about smoking things and the whole stoner thing is so mature, that’s what teenagers do, at least where I live. So I just find it a bit cringe worthy.
I'm all for more mature content, but this is not it for me.

I think someone started a thread for questions like this not long ago! (Which I think was a great idea, things you're trying to identify can get lost when the thread is busy - not that it is right now, but in general.)

All of this.

Though I did wonder about what the BBC might think. D&P work at Radio 1, which is desperately trying (and failing apparently) to aim for a young audience of teens. And with an audience like that come over concerned but uninformed parents who heard about vaping on the news once. The Vegas video probably never got uploaded because they realized the BBC wouldn't like it if their new jocks had a recent video of their piss drunk faces all over the internet. Then again, they got hired back when Dan wasn't trying to his audience's cool older brother figure, so they just need to deal :')

Well, what exactly is 'mature' humor? Does it even exist? The point is more that the stoner/vape memes and jokes aren't child friendly. They're about a mature subject, in this case drugs, and I think that's what some people here want from them. More adult themes, not just CBBC subjects like dogs and popcorn.

You do realise that he's being cringy on purpose and is actually very publicly poking fun at himself, right? Naturally you may find this attempt at being meta and self-depreciating deeply unfunny, this is a subjective matter after all, but I think calling him a lost cause and implying that he's mentally an immature 13-year-old is a bit much in this case. I don't think the proverbial 13-year-old that you have in mind displays this level of self-awareness ;)

i think he is just trying so hard to be relatable to his young audience. how its called?? "to be down with the kids"
i dont see it as self awareness and poking fun at himself. Or even a sign of rebranding and being more mature in his content. More like the opposite. he is just catering to his tween audience
the bolded part is true but i still find him incredibly cringe and embarrassing

There's this post that has been bothering me and I wonder if any of u guys have thoughts.
http://ennuidan.tumblr.com/post/1460809 ... l-and-boys
First I want to say that I usually really like this blog and most of their posts. Secondly I want to say that mostly what is bothering me is the attitude that they display in the tags. Idk just for me phil's sexuality (outside of his possible relationship w Dan) has always felt like a mystery and this just feels like someone's personal headcanon projected onto him.

Add me to the list of people who find jokes about weed/smoking deeply inmature. Maybe it's because I'm always in 'teacher' mode, but I prefer staged jokes about dogs rather than staged jokes about drugs. I find nothing 'adult' in them, and many 15 year olds joke about weed (and/or actually smoke weed) on a weekly basis, so it's nothing out of the teenage world.

it's not really a mystery when he explicitly states his sexuality. but that gifset is a bit of a reach. 'that man exists' 'omg phil loves boys!!!'

the weed jokes definitely aren't 'adult', but it excludes people who are younger/more naive and think that joking about (or actually taking) drugs makes you a literally awful evil heathen. it's more about maturity than age in seeing that morality behind topics like that isn't black-white and can be something to joke about. anyway let's face it, dan would choke immediately, bless him. im getting bored of plants and dogs like i got bored of llamas and lions and delia smith.

anyway dans tweet made me laugh. all of his 'jk not really yes jk' tweets make me laugh
my name is jaejmine masters and i have something to say. dan and phil have fucked up japan :japhan:

I mean, a lot of people on Tumblr or any other social media force their headcanons on them so I'm not that surprised. I'll admit that I do it sometimes too but let's say that I keep those "headcanons" to myself and don't put them on tumblr saying to people they shouldn't try to argue with me about the headcanons that I made up.

edit : I've used the word headcanon way too many times

Okay, I see. I think I understand your point of view but I just have a different taste and intuitions. That leads to us obviously having different starting points, yours being the "he's trying to be down with the kids" approach, mine being the "he's amusingly self-aware" view so we're bound to differ here. Whatever, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
