The glasses picture is actually @AFuturePhil on twitter without a doubt.
They've already met several fans "in the wild" and have been nothing but gracious even when they're seemingly trying to avoid attracting attention. I don't understand how occasionally taking that small step to avoid possibly being hounded can rub you the wrong way. How does it affect you?eevee wrote:I didn't even consider the Christina Grimmie situation to be at all similar to meeting people in the wild but that's a good point. They could be worried about safety which is valid. But to me it just seems like they're actively avoiding meeting people in the wild by posting delayed instas and that kinda rubs me the wrong way, but I don't have much right to feel that way since they do so much for their fans with this tour and all the M&Gs as well as cons. And you're right, they could get swarmed, I just don't think that's super likely tbh.fancybum wrote: Maybe they don't feel like being swarmed out 'in the wild' if they can avoid it. Maybe 2 people would show up, or maybe a giant crowd, it can't be predicted so it's probably better to be cautious ('better safe than sorry'). Plus after Christina Grimmie (which was even a planned M&G environment) I'm not going to begrudge anybody their personal safety precautions/comfort levels.

Hooookay this photo is absolutely doing it for me Phil's hair that length. Dan's hand in that pose. Bless!
I'm still going to be at work during the 2:30 show and couldn't even try to get free tickets -- bleugh! Maybe I'm suddenly feeling ill... yeah, that's it. cough

It doesn't personally affect me you're right I just feel bad for fans who can't afford to pay for VIP or vidcon or something like that....I know they've been super nice to fans they meet in the wild, I'm happy about that!! I didn't mean to imply that they aren't.Lain wrote:They've already met several fans "in the wild" and have been nothing but gracious even when they're seemingly trying to avoid attracting attention. Ok, delayed response because I just got home from work...
BUT!!!
Here we goooooooo!!!
Although I already have a reserved seat (big ups to hiddenwombat, I've been keeping a very close eye on the ticket sales since day one.
The front 2 rows sold out immediately, the following 2 shortly after.
For the next several days there were trickles of sales throughout the middle orchestra section. The only tickets sold in the mezzanine areas were scalpers (the first couple seats in the front and center of each section) and were immediately available for sale on the respective sites. (At last count there were over 250 tickets available on those sites)
The rest of this is commentary as someone who has, on and off over the past 15 years, worked in live show and touring music production:
A couple of days ago, the entire top mezzanine area suddenly blocked out, which is what happens when one of 3 things are planned:
1) VIP section for special guests (this is commonly done during shows that expect high-level celebs that need to be segregated from the general crowd in order to enjoy themselves. You see this happen at like, Beyonce concerts.)
2) Camera set-up (fairly obvious)
3) Poor ticket sales, so they block out an entire section in the farthest seats. (You sometimes see this happen in arena shows, especially for the sections along the side of the stage, and to the very backs.)
Dan claimed that a limited amount of tickets were being sold because they had previously been reserved for camera set up and "for some reason we can't sell them".
This is a lie for a number of reasons:
1) I attempted to reserve tickets a number of times after entering the promo code over the past couple hours in order to test where the available "limited number of seats" were. I was offered seats throughout mezzanine 1 and 2.
When trying to purchase tickets without using the code, I was immediately offered tickets in the more expensive orchestra section. This indicates that the "free" tickets are all the cheaper $45 seats.
2) I have personally worked a filmed production at The Dolby recently. The Dolby is specifically designed for filming. The section that separates the orchestra section from the 2nd section has a very wide walkway, and the paths by the exit doors closest to the orchestra are wide as well, to allow cameras to easy access that area. The theater is also equipped with dozens of theater boxes along the side walls next to the orchestra and 2nd section that are not used for actual guest seating. They are specifically there to allow cameras and cranes to fit in and film in order to get full unobstructed access to shots of the stage and performers without minimizing view of the guests in seats.
3) That's not how crew comp tickets work. Before any show, a number of tickets, usually a number specifically requested but he artist and management, are put on hold for cameras, crew, friends, and family. If at any point the performers or management do not need as many tickets as they have requested, they release them back to the venue, who in turn release them to the general public for sale on the websites. If there are still available unsold tickets day of show, the production team and venue staff will begin offering comp tickets to friends, family, and non-union crew in order to fill seats.
I can personally attest to the fact that this is how it is being done for this production, as I spoke to event management staff for the venue recently in an attempt to scam free tickets and was confirmed of this fact.
Why the fuck you lyyyyiiin. Why you always lyyyyiiinnn...
If you look at the map now, a vast majority of the free seats are now filled, and yet there are still a good amount of orchestra seats (see: not free, expensive) seats available.
While I am slightly annoyed by the fact that they released *so many* free tickets, I am more annoyed by the fact that those that did buy seats are not getting a M&G. On the plus side, those that did buy tickets have better seats. Though in that venue the layout is so superb that there really isn't such a thing as a "bad seat".
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
END RANT.

"We had to block out a huge section of seating for a camera crew of 10 in a venue that hosts the fucking Oscars."

No beef on Deppy for trying to fix an awkward situation of a filmed show and an empty house. It happens, and it sucks when it does. it's embarrassing, and it's costly.
And I know they aren't gonna come right out and be like "HEY GUYZ! FREE TICKETS CUZ TICKET SALES SUCK!"
But it doesn't take much for people to see that the seats being offered for free were never blocked off. They were completely available right up until that free offer.
So this is just yet another example of how they could make the whole situation so much better for themselves if they didn't try to over explain stuff and just let it happen.

Thanks for your knowledge cora808!!!
I wonder how many people believed Dan's explanation as the 100% truth. They're giving away free tickets because they want people to be there so it can look decently full. If this extra day was only for filming and they didn't care at all about how many people came, they wouldn't be trying to attract people with free seats. They must care to have more seats filled at least a little bit imo lol.

I'm on team #notlying, ftr. Also, 10 cameras in my world means a DP, an operator and 1 or 2 ac's per camera, DITs, etc., but I'm coming from a feature / series TV background - not live entertainment / sports where there is only one operator per camera and everyone else is back in the remote truck. What we don't know is whether they will be filming the shows multi-camera live tv style or multi camera doc style (or a mix of the two) My guess however is that there will be camera positions in the crowd - not something you would do in a standard awards show format.

missemma confirmed that at the UK shows there were cameras everywhere and there were camera people going around filming the audience as well. Idk if this answers your question or not. I'm guessing they'll do the same for the US and all future filmed shows though. Despite how much room the cameras take up, I don't understand why else they'd need to give away free tickets, as opposed to just releasing the "blocked sections" back for purchase to the public.uglyamerican wrote:I'm on team #notlying, ftr. ok but like... they film the oscars there.... and that doesn't get in the way of the seating bc the venue is designed for filming..... their show can't possibly need more cameras and crew than the oscarsuglyamerican wrote:I'm on team #notlying, ftr. Watch the Oscars and see where the (roving) cameras actually are: in the aisles and between tables - not embedded in the crowd / audience. Granted camera cranes and Skycams are pretty much in fixed positions, and probably placed where the interfere with the audience the least. But you never know: they may have hired a DP that insists on placing a camera where he/she wants, not a prepared camera position. Been there...trashqueen wrote:ok but like... they film the oscars there.... and that doesn't get in the way of the seating bc the venue is designed for filming..... their show can't possibly need more cameras and crew than the oscarsuglyamerican wrote:I'm on team #notlying, ftr. I've been rewatching their DITLs and noticed how they went to a Starbucks in every one of them. I thought that was rather cute, considering we know Starbucks was the first place they ever went together on that fateful day in Oct '09. So seeing that they went to the original Starbucks today and seeing Dan's little hand over his heart and their smiles has me like
Maybe I'm sentimentalizing something that isn't remotely meaningful to them and hey, maybe they just rly like the coffee. But idk I can't help but see it as cute as fuck.

I would accept this were it not for the fact that all the seats that are free today we're available and for sale yesterday. The only area that was blocked out before was the mezzanine 3, which remained blocked out today.uglyamerican wrote:I'm on team #notlying, ftr. What a lovely picture, and just what I wanted in a new avatar. They both look so good.
I feel like they're bending the truth a bit but then I didn't expect any less. Are they truly meant to tweet "guys please take the free tickets cos we can't sell them", that would be very poor advertising for their Australian tour that they've just announced.
I don't think it really matters to us even if they are lying anyway, they clearly need the show for pick-ups (I went to a small UK 1D gig at the O2 that was for pick-ups for their film, it was really intriguing watching them shoving cameras in the boys face and having them re-run bits of songs and set up for Liam "surprising" Harry by yanking down his trousers haha) and so long as the area around the stage and the front of the balconys are full, they won't care - camera tricks can be used to pad out a venue. At this point, it's probably more important they get the material they need than have a DVD full of mistakes or angles they missed or bits of the show they screwed up. My two cents anyway lol I don't really care.
In the UK, they flogged tickets for cheap to plant butts also but it's just the same as people being able to get last minute flights for cheap or free, it's just the way the cookie crumbles and I don't think anyone needs to be jealous or angry about it. This isn't a unique situation and makes sense. It's still a bit lolzor though, I did whatsapp missemma about it though and be all like haha lolzor. But so long as they produce a good DVD I'm pretty chill.
Sulking there was no ls this week though, I really had a feeling they'd do one Sunday or Monday and nothing. Pouts.
As for that pic, well. Phil you stay exactly where you are because you are PER-FECT (cookie to anyone who knows where that's from ahaha).
