I see Dan as a great(ful) friend - not sure why anyone would see anything different.
Yeah I noticed that too, I wondered why at times, this need for Dan to vocalise his "feelings" about Phil (supportive/defensive etc). Is there anyone that said Dan is not grateful lately, I think maybe a few years back when he was trying to establish himself as danisnotonfire (thankfully those days are gone).
When were you harsh?
I noticed this too and my theory is that with all the fan interaction and the tour ... Dan probably feels conflicted by the fact that *relatively* speaking, he seems to be more popular than Phil. It may be quite subtle, but when say.. 7 out of 10 of ppl in the meet and greets start walking up to you first, or if the audience sounds just a tad more enthusiastic and cheer just a little harder at your lines it can all start to add up. Bottom line, it's probably fair to say that Dan has a wider audience and the difference might be noticeable to them.
If i think I understand Dan, he probably feels a bit bad about him stealing a bit more of the spotlight.
I do think when he met Phil and they exchanged those 'sweet editing tips', the relationship was already much broader and Dan genuinely admires Phil, looked (and still looks) to him for friendship, support and as an echo board. i think Dan realizes that he has his Phil to thank for his quick breakthrough into the youtube scene, and that he is very grateful for the encouragement Phil gave him at the time in his life (he just dropped out of college and didn't know what he wanted to do with his life - he said so himself that if it weren't for Phil he might not have made videos)
So i think he feels the need to credit and defend Phil because in his mind he deserves just as much popularity as him and feels that their success was and is intricately linked, and he might get triggered by subtle hints and signs that undermine that equality.
But who knows what's really in those boys heads

He does take the defensive stance for Phil a lot (thinking about the whole rant about credit and the encouraging Phil to speak on panels and all) and I think it's a mix of:
1. Their dynamic: they balance each other incredibly well and we have notice of how supportive they are of each other in private by their discourses (the news of how they show their videos to eachother before posting, or debating ideas for their channels) and hints of it when we see little acts on public (how they cling to each other in parties where they don't really know many people, I'm also thinking of the hand Dan put on Phil's back after the vidcon hug was it last year o the year before? as a comforting gesture... and many others)
2. The fans reception: the increasing vocalization of their history and domestic things because when he does it he receives very positive feedback from the fans, (be it by shippers who just like when he mentions Phil and people who are still shaken up from 2012) the amount of likes and positive feedback can be very encouraging and also (I don't want to make it sound bad because it isn't) a good way of controlling the phandom, first thing that comes to mind is the rant about credit and the results of tons of people going on other's youtubers channels demanding credit and basically scaring a lot of people into never forgetting to credit them (that maybe have gotten out of hand with other youtubers now starting to get really annoyed by it - might burn some bridges or make people less willing to have contact with them/the phandom)
Could also be:
Something that we talked before in here is how their secrecy policy is changing (just an educated guess) and how they're becoming more open about their privacy/not scared about every little thing anymore, that could also explain how we increasingly have new 'moments' of these things. People take it in various ways, some hoping they're slowly building up to coming out and some thinking they just aren't freaking out about the weirdness that is shipping.
wow I had some opinions! I hope everything is coherent, if not just reply and I'll try again, lol
I'm happy you came up with other positive reasons while my mind immediately went to the chancey nature of success to explain his defensiveness
Also, i totally read that collab with Rosanno Piano
I can't be bothered to learn names k as "NERDY MUMMIES'
Not gonna scout out her vids because they don't sound appealing to me at all. Hm. Maybe they'll all start acting, get into the Miranda Sings version of their personna and make some delicious cringe humour.
I so hope it's not kiddie safe xd
