Re: nail polish. Will everyone who pushed for Dan to paint his nails actually feel satisfaction when or if he does it? It’s a good point that Dan probably will be doing it because he actually wants to, but on the flip side, there’s literally no way for him to do it now without acknowledging that the fans really want him to do it. In other words there’s no way anymore for him to do it independently of the fan’s demanding it since he’s well aware that it’s something a lot of people want. So therefore there will certainly be some influence by the fans. Now the fans wanting him to do it can either influence him to not want to paint them or influence him to paint them. I honestly don’t think he’s able to completely ignore it. Yes he chooses to read out those messages but perhaps that’s because of the sheer number of them. I feel like at this point, if Dan painted his nails, I would have no way of knowing if he actually wanted to do it or not, because the fans have made it such a big deal. If I had advocated for it, I wouldn’t feel satisfaction once he did it, because I would know I influenced it at least a little bit. If I wanted Dan to do something, I’d wait for him to choose to do it on his own.
I think pressuring someone to express gender a certain way isn't cool, whether it be within a norm or not. I understand the desire for Dan to break gender norms, or anyone for that matter, gender roles are harmful, but don't you think it's also a little harmful to strongly encourage someone to express gender a way
you want to see them express it?
Tl;dr The fans want him to break gender norms, but will they really be happy once he does if it’s only to appease them?
