Everyone has thoughtful comments and review posts and I'm just like vomiting emotions, immediate reactions, and

The show:

I ended up watching the show first as I wanted to settle in with dinner and an, ahem, nice beverage for the docu. So here are my pre-docu viewing thoughts on the show only.

Reactions are primarily the same as my reviews from seeing it live with a few small moments that are specific to the video-viewing experience:

- Close-ups of Phil, all day, all night, all the time, yes please thank you much
- They added so many little spicy moments? I think? It’s as simple as a gesture here a joke there but it kept me on my toes (and in giggle fits) even though I’ve already seen it live twice. I suspect it will upon repeat viewing too.
- I’m glad they nixed the giant 7-Eleven jug that they had for the “drink of the people” and got the “wine” for Internet Support
- Close-up on Dan’s face during his existential crisis: he must be mortified but…wow. If that is the face of a man putting his heart and soul into his work...
- Dil’s. Entrance. Yasssss. Done perfectly, shot perfectly.
- Phil’s singing was better than I remember
- I felt so happy seeing the professional credits with their names, you have no idea…I know everyone’s heart was bursting like a proud parent’s
- “Dil as Himself” ya little tricksters

The docu:

- It’s not gonna kill me. It’s not gonna kill me…it’s just a documentary…it’s not gonna kill me. ::sees their feet two seconds in:: Lord have mercy, this is gonna kill me.

- “Check out our tour bus yo”- I laughed for about three minutes before I could even get beyond “What’s up? I’m D-hizzle and I’m P-lizzle” Not exaggerating….like at all. I had to remember how to breathe (side note: my “beverage” may or may not have been kicking in about now )

- OMG, Phil looked so good at the room extending part
- I know y’all don’t like the Kanye references but the “fact” and reaction made me laugh
- Phil’s crotch… Phil in the shower… What’s wrong with me?
- The rest of the nose-touching scene. ::just stares at you:: Yep. That happened.
- Them writing their name on that wall, yas, deppy claim your place in history
- Them doing their warm-ups, adorable
- Tha Dil stuff was cute, haha, I liked it
- All of the wardrobe ppl ship it, y’all know
- Phil handling the champagne though
- “Let’s go home” Awwwwww....

Now for the reflections.

#busgate

There is no. way. Phil let that tall ass Dan sleep in that tiny ass bed for two months. No. fucking. Way. That "bye Dan"/“wake up, Dan” scene was the fakest shit I’ve ever seen them do. Poor Philly couldn’t even pretend to kick Dan off the bed without looking guilty as sin.

That being said…does that mean they shared? Not necessarily. Maybe they alternated, maybe they shared, maybe they did a little of both. I think maybe they opted to show as much as we already knew about and then left it there. Then again, part of me is like “That was so fake and they know they have a smart audience. It’s almost like they were saying ‘of course we shared- but we’re not going to make a thing of it’ by making it so obviously fake.”

Them being separated in the hotel actually made me feel a bit…better in a way? Like, we get it, they spend every waking moment together and usually they do as much at home. But touring is stressful and intense and they were on a very tight schedule. I don’t take them needing to compress a bit away from each other while working so intensely as no-homo-ing...OK, the several floors apart business was a bit much and I have no doubt in my mind that they were only apart to literally sleep but…they didn’t crack my phan-goggles with that. Smudged them a bit, maybe.

The way they talked/narrated the whole thing reminded me of that one part in Say Anything where Diane and her dad tell that story and then Lloyd is like, “you guys are amazing.” I felt like Lloyd watching the whole thing. They’re so in sync, so happy, and just so…alive, having seen each other through.

I adore them so much. I really do.

Going to go off and watch the docu again before I sleep bye.

But. I am extremely disappointed, I would even say irritated by the fact that they haven't as much as mentioned fanfiction live in the doc and why they've made that (unfortunate) decision. I know I'm getting into a dangerous territory here, the word "fanservice" could be mentioned, who knows, so proceed at your own risk, but I have a lot of opinions about this (honestly, if I had time I'd get a third Master's only to write about queerbaiting and shipbaiting in contemporary media). YOU CAN'T AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN SLASHY FANFICTION AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME (sorry for yelling). Well, you can, but it's literal shipbaiting - hinting about something more without ever going through with it, what are you doing, reassess your life, you are better than Moffat. Like, I get they are real people, not characters, but at the same time they are, they are playing them every time they're on the internet, they've just written a show about those characters, own up to your fucking choice. I need them to at least address it in a live show. Sorry for ranting, but the decision to include fanfiction is the only one of theirs that I don't understand and can't even begin to explain however I try

My opinions on why they included the Fanfiction bit

If the show is a homage to their past, fanfic is a big part of that. going back to their earlier liveshows they couldn't go a week without people asking if they read the newest ones, and dan at least always said yes. Heck dan did a three part video series on shipping, fandoms and and all that. They acknowledged it in dan's tumbler tag, and in the book. I think it would be more strange to ignore that it exists entirely than to use it and make it your own and make fun of it. There is power in that.

Also it wasnt their fault, Dil made them do it They messed with him, so he messed with them back.

Why not talk about it then? I understand your logic, what I don't understand is deppy's attitude.

Like, in the beginning, when Dan did those videos, it apparently was something that surprised him, it was becoming this big part of Internet culture, it was a thing his audience in particular was interested in, so he tried to understand it (but the less said about some of his opinions form that period in general, the better, imo). The next big change came in late 2013 with the tumblr tag, the book idea (apparently) and Deppy being more comfortable with shipping. I guess, all of this is somehow related (and with them doing well on BBC, too, but I can only speculate). I actually think they've handled it very well in TABINOF: they've honored the fanfiction writers by doing their own, it was a bit fanservicy, especially Dan's, but not over the top. What's different about TATINOF, though, is that they've actually written it themselves - and it's slash, nevermind their scripted reaction. In the tumblr tag video, when they're reading the skin fic, it's something that's already out there. They could have done the same for TATINOF or, I don't know, ask to submit fanfiction as a part of audience participation in the same manner as 7SC (which is also played in the show as a thing orchestrated by Dil), but they chose not to. Instead, they actually had to sit down and write it, why? That's what bugs me

Unpopular opinion(?):

Am I the only one who hates all the Dill stuff? I like the SIMS videos a lot, but the Dill stuff is so icky to me for some reason....someone (sorry can't remember,too far back to look) thought he was freaky. He was! When he came out irl I was thanking God that I was on the other side of the freaking room. HORRIFYING! I get that he is a pivotal 'part' in TATINOF but still I do not like him. And then the "scenes" in the doc were soooo unnecessary. Give me more Deppy crap/cuteness not this stupid yoga/diva shtick. I did like when Dan put the head on though and chased Phil....that was cute, but not reason enough to have that heinous thing exist. I hope they put a match to it when they are for sure done with the show. Nightmare material.

So I watched the show first...I've seen it live but for some reason it was way cringier than I remember it being?? Idk, it might've been because being there in person made it a more enjoyable experience. I still loved it though, cringy as it was. The song at the end is my favorite part and always makes me feel super happy. It's nice to have a clear recording of it since at my show I could barely hear them singing over all the screaming

I loved the doc so much that I've already watched it twice! Behind the scenes stuff always fascinates me...I just really love seeing how stuff is made. I could tell they put so much work into this tour and I felt so proud of them

My only complaint was that I wish it was longer! It seemed like they filmed a ton of stuff at a lot of different places over the course of the uk and us tour and we only saw tiny snippets. I'd kill to see the rest of the footage.

I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary and it made me adore Phil Lester more

Not bothered about the #busgate as I pretty made up my mind on whats reality so the smokescreen does not affect me.

The reaction of a sick guy being woken up by someone, that sealed the deal for me I can imagine lads will poke nose or ears or something similar, but playing with the fringe as a method to "irritate" and the victim to wake up with a smile instead of being grumpy/pissed off well lets say no "acting" can beat that instant sincere reaction

The reason people are upset about the bed situation is because they lied and used the #nohomo card. It doesn't matter if the rest of the doc was good, the fact they lied like that ruins it for some people, which is totally understandable. It's like listening to a speech of your favourite politician and everything they say is incredible but at one point they clearly lie on something, well then the whole speech becomes shit and whatever else they say doesn't matter anymore. The reaction is absolutely fair.

Tbh I hope it was as some of you have said and it was just a injoke and they don't expect us to believe it, but then it sends a really bad message to the general audience and people that are not that invested in them.

Let me explain it. The way they addressed the whole bed situation was that they would rather have one of them sleep like crap on those tiny bunks than sleep together. Sharing that big bed was never an option for whatever reason. But what would that reason be? Clearly that was before Phil got ill so that's not one. Which for me leaves two options: that they don't feel comfortable at all sharing a bed, to the point they would prefer that one of them sleeps like shit and have terrible muscular pains the next day, which in my opinion reeks of homophobia. Or that they are so closeted that they wouldn't want to come out even to the bus crew, which would be insanely sad. Of course none of us believes Dan slept on that bunk, but the general audience would, which is problematic for the aforementioned implications.

Does any of you have another reason why sharing the bed was totally out of the question?

I'm gonna watch the show again with you guys, but I did watch the doc today. I found it the most adorable, sweet thing. I would point out parts but I'm too lazy. I have nothing more to say.
This sounds so cheesy, but what made me so emotional is that it is a end of a era. Who knows what will happen in the future, but whatever it is, I'm excited. (unless it's a moving out, which I'd rather not have.)

Okay, so imma talk about the bed thing. I know it's been talked about over and over but like, I have an opinion so here we go

I feel like the thing about Dan and Phil is that everything is one giant in-joke. So many of us have been here for so long, it's all just old jokes and nostalgia. And at this point, it's kind of 'we know, they know we know, they know we know they know' kind of thing. We're all 'in on the joke' and we let them pretend they don't share a bed just to humour them, and we just have a laugh behind the scenes. That's fine. If they don't want to share that stuff with us for whatever reason, that's fine. HOWEVER, I feel like them adding in stuff over and over and over again that 'we aren't sharing a bed' 'we got separate hotel rooms' ect. is just patronising at this point? Most of us have been here long enough, are old enough, or smart enough to realise that they are blatantly lying. And I don't know why but that really makes me mad. Why go out of your way to lie about it? Just leave it, don't include it, whatever, but they went out of their way about three times to say they weren't sharing a bed, and it feels old and patronising and im tired.

Also, I would be more likely to believe they buy two damn tour buses before I believe diva dan squeezes his ass into a tiny bunk for two months, but nice try.

Idk, overall I loved both movies, and im emo and happy and in love with them both, but i feel like the who 'bed situation' that shouldn't even be a situation is this big shadow that shouldnt exist. I have some theories on why they're doing this, but honestly it's 2016 and its time to stop pretending like the audience is stupid.

I hope that's the case.

“We don’t burst into song like Troy Bolton” makes me think that whoever said before that High School Musical may have played some role in inspiring Dan while he was coming up with tatinof could be right.
Dan gets mock upset by graphic phan art, and decides 'everything has gone wrong'.

The whole existential crisis section: possibly insight into Dan’s psychology – he feels like he doesn’t want to be ‘stuck’ making youtube videos forever, and would like to break the mould and do something new.

Later resolved: he can see the point of it as an escape for people, to distract them from their problems. Then right at the end resolved further with the take away message that Dan should feel like what he does is important because it makes people happy and creates friendships, and that Phil should feel happy being himself and not try and change himself to meet other people’s approval – because he already has other people’s approval!

I thought the existential crisis scene was interesting – with Phil reassuring Dan while he was worried, and it made me wonder if this is how it is in real life when Dan’s worried about something. Phil immediately said that what they were doing was worthwhile.

Dan’s singing was mostly good – and this is live so I suspect he can do better in calmer conditions. I expect great things from his forthcoming piano album I am still convinced he will make.

Phan things:
Presumably Dan and Phil decided which 'crafts' to include & decided to include the trophy saying Dan is 'Phil Trash #1' 'from 2009 to infinity'.

They presumably came up with the idea of themselves, old and grey, in matching clothes, still drawing cat whiskers on their faces and saying ‘how many years have we been doing this now?’

Dan calling it a "family portrait" when he holds the baby Dil up next to Phil, followed by audience screaming.


If I had one complaint it would be that the movie has made me consider an AU where Dan is a "good Christian boy" – I mean, how boring

Documentary thoughts under spoiler (haven't watched the show yet, will wait till the weekend when I can drink, not even joking)

So, I have to confess I couldn't watch it straight away because life, but I have zero restraint, so I read you guys' thoughts on my way home and I knew what I was getting into (you were all so upset in the beginning I actually hesitated before buying it, lol).

Liked it overall, definitely will rewatch multiple times, especially loved all the actual making of parts, they've worked really hard (why are all the trainers and creative people they've worked with (white) men, though? I guess, tumblr's getting to me, sorry), disappointed by the bus tour yadda yadda (why, oh why not just say you took turns? look at your life, look at your choices Deppy smh) - but not as much as some of you, I guess, because it was quite predictable, even if I hoped for something better (like some of you said, they won't come out in paid content - and they should have the decency not to do so if they ever do come out).

I kind of disagree that the Fanfiction Live was shipbaiting. I think they were doing it because they are trying to please the fans. I dont think they were expecting people to take it seriously, it was almost like them writing fanfics in Tabinof or dan reading one on tumblr. I think its closer to shipbaiting when dan titles his videos like this..

75% of me so happy about this and all of the cute and Phil just shone so bright in that documentary that... honestly, just let me drown in the dumpster that is my life. Phil and his pillow and his illness and Dan being fond just... as someone who leans more towards being a Dangirl, this doc did nothing but highlight Phil. I forced my friend into watching this with me and she came out saying she loved Phil and that he was more believable and adorable and it felt like everything Dan said was scripted. I can't say I disagree. What I can say is just...... Phil.

The other 25% of me really wanted more. There was too much interview and not enough actual behind-the-scenes. I don't necessarily want everything filmed, but I'd love to have seen the process of imagining it, the various concepts they went through, more dance and song practice, why they chose certain bits, more discussion in general. I really like that shit. When they were sitting on the couch making a decision, I was like... MORE PLEASE. IDK. I feel like I got as much out of that doc as I did it's teaser.

Re: the show

I saw it in Boston and noted this then, but it goes without saying that I'm so absurdly proud of these guys. How hard they work. You can see it in every shot. And it's a lovely show, be it cringy or not. I don't have words. It's great. The dance number is great. The future portion is great. The fanfic is questionable great. And boy did I appreciate them replacing mountain dew with "wine".

In general, I'm just.... really excited about all the gifs that are gonna come out of this. And my are just where they were before, if not more secure.

No spoiler comment: ok guys I think we are all being quite negative about this, i mean, ITS YOUTUBE RED FOR FUCKS SAKE!, im really not amazed that its not what we expected if its made by such a commercial company so pls dont let this influence on what you have believed for YEARS, and also of course there wasnt going to be lots of domestic stuff if a camera crew is following their every move, these guys dont even enjoy vlogs, imagine how awkward it would be if someone was following you with big camera equipment while you are doing your daily shit, no wonder it feels kinda scripted. Plus and most important: if they were going to come out this year, it would not, and i repeat NOT be in a youtube red vid that didnt even show or mention something as important as their family. (at least for phil not to mention it its surprising, like at least your brother? i saw cornelia in the back, you cant fool me)

I just watched both and I haven't read anyone's opinions but I just need to share my thoughts.
I'm so proud. So, so proud. Seeing people praise them and talk about how hardworking they are really made my heart swell. Whether they slept in the same bed or not, the love came through in small moments.
There were a lot of rehearsed answers, bad acting (ahem...) and those scenes made me cringe. They really try so hard to get a certain image across and nothing but that image... I kinda expected that.

But. Holy crap. I'm so overwhelmed right now. I'm gonna watch everything again soon and come back with nitpicky opinions.

TATINOF was as good as I remembered but some of the magic was just not the same in a video. Very lucky to see it live and glad for everybody who was not able that now there is a film so they can see it too.

The documentary was very cute until

and then it was like there was a bad mood in the rest of it. It was also very short. Don't know why they cut out so much when they could leave in many more parts. Wanted to see more of everything including behind the scenes making of TATINOF and domestic and travel parts and even more. If they made a 2nd documentary maybe it would be enough.

Had teary eyes during some parts of TATINOF and the documentary. So proud of Deppy. They make me happy and happy for them. It is nice to see something they worked hard on and are proud of. Would like to have nicer things to say so I will watch the documentary again when I am not feeling unhappy about that part.

The mentionitis was indeed strong in this LS.

Did you catch the bit where Dan spoke about "breaking charcter" on stage? Their characters are their YT legacy. They spent the entire doc and show being true to these Dan and Phil personas which they have meticulously cultivated. It certainly wasn't the time for balls out honesty. Give it another decade, maybe?

Very very annoyed about busgate. If Deppy keep making phan hints and make profits from things like the fanfiction part of TATINOF while they keep doing 'no homo' then I will not be around in a decade. Maybe not even a year. Like Lurktacularr I am feeling phan doubt and if they are not together then the phan hints and jokes are shipbaiting or even some queerbaiting and I can't be a fan of people who do that. Am a fan of Deppy because they are nice and funny guys who are nice to their audience and they respect the many LGBT fans by not queerbaiting with their relationship. If their relationship is not real then that respect does not exist and they are exploiting fan trust.

Don't think they really are not together. It is mostly anger and frustration that are giving me a doubtful feeling. It is not a good feeling to have.

So in the doc they go on the roof of the dolby theater, and Dan says "it always feels like we aren't allowed to do this" - Did they ask to go on the roof of every theater they went too? Do they go to roofs often. is that a thing they do. its so anime lol.

It is also a romantic trope in anime to have characters confess love on the roof. Deppy are such weeaboos.

Did not expect them to come out. Nobody was that naive. It would be easy for them to haru it but instead they made 3 minutes of an hour video about their fake bed situation. Even if it was a big joke like some people said it was a waste of time and only gave people negative feelings when they could have harued it and made phans and anti phans satisfied.

The only thing I'll say is that it was dirty of them to post the most ditl-y bits in the trailer. But that was misleading, not actually dishonest, it's not like those parts weren't in the documentary at all.

Completely agree the trailer was dirty - even though I liked the doc, I felt like I'd already seen the best bits, and that was no co-incidence. Actually, not just the best bits, but basically the only bits like that.

Then I remembered them emphasising when it was announced that it was a proper 'making of' rather than a DITL - a line I noticed they were very quiet on in the actual lead up to release (with Dan even tweeting about 'domestic bus antics', of which there were basically none)

Idk, overall I loved both movies, and im emo and happy and in love with them both, but i feel like the who 'bed situation' that shouldn't even be a situation is this big shadow that shouldnt exist. I have some theories on why they're doing this, but honestly it's 2016 and its time to stop pretending like the audience is stupid.

Whew. It came out at 2:30 my time, by then I had already made it from work to class, class literally 3pm-8:30pm nonstop back to back, I rushed to get a sandwich and rushed home and immidiately turned on the docu (since I had already bought YTR earlier and all I needed her in the US was a subscription). I chose the docu because I had already seen the show in person. So this post is just for the docu as watching it and reading all your responses has brought me to nearly midnight. It's been a long journey here.

Well, watching the docu has convinced me to watch the professional tatinof show. I'm excited to be able to see their expressions and just see everything up close.

Re: the fanfiction part:
It was interesting to me that they kinda haru'd the fanfiction part of the show in the docu. Almost...almost as if to convey "yeah, that ended up looking dickish and baity, but we wrote it in 2014 and by time we got feedback on it, the show was set in stone. But yeah. Not proud of that." I honestly think that they thought the fanfiction segment would get lots of praise and evoke phangirl pants creaming, when in reality it induced at best eye-rolling and at worse actual feelings of upset and shipbaiting and "you're living a huge lie and selling it to me" and lots of bad stuff. Well done deppy!

Something people haven't brought up: potential suicide trigger warning: Dan mentioned that he loves it when people tell him that they were going through a hard time and their videos helped them. This was after at least one fan said they "saved her life." I have a huge problem with this. Countless people have told dan and phil that they're only alive because of them. That they were going to kill themselves and then decided not to because of Dan and Phil. I know that with telling them that you have good intentions, but imagine the immense pressure that puts on them to remain the same. The pressure that puts on them to never leave Youtube, and finally, the immense pressure that puts on them to never break up. I mean, they know as well as we do that the phandom would shrink by half if they were to break up/go separate ways, but now they have the added threat of some fans actually killing themselves if that happens. And that's just not pressure I'm comfortable with dan and phil having on them. Ever. But there's nothing I can do to stop people from saying that, and Dan is encouraging it, but he'd also kinda look like a dick if he didnt mention it. Out of obligation, he has to say that it's good to hear. But I can't imagine how that'd be good to hear. People don't like hearing that their best friend is only there because of them. It's unsettling. I've had people tell me that if I kill myself, they'll kill themselves. I've had people ask me to kill myself at the same time that they kill themselves. I'm sure that after reading that, you're like "woah, too far." Well what the fuck do you think dan and phil feel when they hear it over and over and over and over again? "Wow, hundreds of people havent killed themselves because of me...what if i change? what if i somehow fuck up?" Honestly this ties into my whole thing about they're keeping the ambiguity of phan in order to keep us around. If something major changes, they risk losing some of us.

Anyway, my next question is, is Chai Cameron single, to which sweetmm informed me he's never been seen with a girl, to which I asked, oh, is he a celebrity? Turns out he's a youtuber. Commence Opteration Chai Trash #1. I'm gonna Dan the fuck outta him. Stalker city. Until he loves me. Okay probably not, I'm too busy for that shit, but that'd be fucking nice. It was so nice to see a guy talking about dan and phil and saying theyre great, bonus hes hot...so...

#busgate. oooooooh #busgate. I'd like to start off by saying, I still believe. Hell, I was there for 2012. I really don't think it gets any worse than that. And I've come out of it alive. But that being said, if anything like it happens again, I'm fucking out. Just like dizzy said. If they make it super clear that theyre not dating in the future, I'm actually leaving. Because exploiting dedicated viewers, who have invested years in you, denying them of the truth, knowing they believe a lie, and cashing in on it...that's fucking vile. And I'm not going to jump to that conclusion because as Dizzy said, they're closeted. Someone brought up that they couldve been closeted to the entire crew. Which would be sad, yes, but to be honest, i wouldn't put it past them. Unless every damn crew member signed an agreement, theyd be risking a crew member leaking it, either out of ignorance, or just thinking the world should know, i don't know, any reason for leaking, and honestly I feel like the possibility of one out of however many crew members they had spilling the beans, I wouldn't put it past them to not come out to the crew. Anyway, that doesn't explain why Dan didn't fucking know how to get out of the bunk, and why his hair was straight, and he was already clearly awake, and why he hasn't complained about the bunk, why he hasnt been seriously injured by said bunk, etc. It's possible they shared the bed and didn't come out the crew. Like people said, best friends can sleep in the same bed, no problemo. Maybe they did alternate, which honestly I think they would've said they did if they had thought of it. Oh well. We still have a lot of unanswered questions. When I first saw the rock paper scissors thing, I got deeply upset, I was really mad. I had to take a break. I just felt hurt. This is not what we deserve. They know that phan is a huge part of why they're famous. So doing this to us is just cruel. But like people said, they prefaced it with the tweet long ago, and we shouldn't have expected anything else. At first I saw it as a phan denial, but the more I think about it...they had to choose between "yes we sleep in the same bed" which leans waaay more toward a phan confirmation than not, or saying they slept in separate beds, which says less about their relationship status but still leans on the no phano side. I feel like they almost didn't think of not even addressing the issue. That obviously would've been a good way to go. I'm going to convince myself that they didn't think of that, because I feel like going above and beyond to prove they didnt sleep together is really rude of them. okay, I think that concludes my rant.

I agree that the docu is too short. I was pretty upset when I heard the length earlier today. Dan said feature film length in the liveshow. wtf man...oh well. i just feel like they filmed so much they really couldve done a lot more with the docu. But oh well.

I did cry at the end, because damn, they've come a long way.
