favorite arc ? probably chimera ant it was a bit slow but.. ohh god please dont make me remember.
I heard Dan mentioning it in his last live-show or was i just mistaken ? i hope he finishes it his going to cry like a bitch
Congrats on surviving the chimera ant arc. I find so much of it sooo weird while simultaneously loving and crying about so many of moments in it.
My fave arc is probably the Yorkshin one, it was the last part of the manga I originally read ages ago (like literally. 12 years ago) before I stopped for some reason. I love how clever and surprising the plot is and the psychological tricks and logic games I live for this shit.
Killua will always be one of my favorite characters.
And YES Dan said they started watching/are about to start watching (?) HxH! I can't wait for his opinion on it

Yuri on ice: WHAT was that episode?? Ok, well I feel like I say the same thing every week but damn. Seems like they are really going for it. I am not too invested in the characters and the plot is.. well not really much to speak of. But it's a fun watch and I'm interessted in where they will take it. Also the use of social media cracks me up

Okay, I was turned off anime and couldn't find one I really liked for some time but after jumping on the Yuri on Ice bandwagon it's safe to say I'm back
I was interested in your posts about the figure skaters but for some reason the images don't load for me, seemed interesting from what I could see

Beware, I have no anime experience and don't understand anything!

I was never really interested in anime and for the longest time I genuinely believed it was for kids  (please don't kill me). But this summer I watched the anime videos Deppy made and after Dan mentioned "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", it was available on Netflix and I had a lot of spare time, I gave it a shot. I liked it a lot! However, I didn't start another anime afterwards.
Now I am intrigued again because of the new videos :sideeye: So I decided to get that stupid free trial and started watching a few shows to see if it's something I might enjoy. We'll see if I will fall down the anime pit or can't be bothered to continue watching it after the free trial.

Impressions/Questions:
- The episodes have a perfect length for watching something while eating YouTube videos are often too short and tv shows are mostly too long.

- You can't really do anything besides eating while watching because you have to read the subtitles, which is annoying. I like to tidy my room and watch a tv show while doing so, but that's not possible with anime. Unless it's dubbed, but I've heard that it's better not to watch dubbed anime. Is that true?

- Dan mentioned that there are often homoerotic elements but never any canon same-sex relationship, which really annoys me and I don't know if I want to support an industry like that. But according to tumblr, "Yuri!!! On Ice" is different, so I decided to start watching it, not sure if I like it though. What are your thoughts on that?

- A lot of the animation is flat out ridiculous, but I figured that's how anime works (?) It's hilarious, I just wonder if they do that in serious scenes as well.

Please don't kill me, if any of this is wrong or stupid :shame:
About Crunchyroll:
What I don't get is that some shows are available but apparently not in my region (like AOT or Erased for example). I tried changing my location with hola, but it still didn't work. Did I do something wrong? Is that normal? And is there a way around that?

What a confused mess of a post, I'm reluctant to post this :?

Hi!
Dubbed anime is usually not recommended because of the dub being not really good or accurate I guess? I've heard dubbed AoT and I wanted to die. Also with subs you might have like explanations here and there because Japanese works differently than english after all.

And indeed, Yuri!!! On Ice seems to be going down the path of at least queerplatonic relationship with the two main charcaters. I won't spoil anything, but yes, it's worth it. AoT for example also has canon lesbian couple (or at least two female characters that have been explicitly stated to have requitted romantic feelings for each other and they are very important in the manga)
Loads of the "queerbaiting" in anime is just japan portraying close friendships between guys with a dash of fanservice and fujoshi fangirls jumping on that with canon theories.

Ridiculous animation is part of anime and is the thing that makes it so specific.

And I do have crunchy premium and watch it with hola. Clear cookies in your browser, that should help.

Also to anyone -crunchyroll also provides loads of manga, so do notice that too! If you loved Attack on Titan anime, I guarantee you won't (but also will so hard) regret reading the manga, I might even say it's better than the anime. First chpaters are drawn a bit sloppily, but it improves so much. Anime also omitted and changed few important elements and I really wonder how they will deal with the changes/omissions in future seasons

also if anyone wants me to talk their ear off about haikyuu, yuri on ice or snk, hmu

To have access to unavailable content in crunchyroll you have to change the language of the page, for example there were some animes that weren't available in my spanish version so i change it to the us one for a bit, of course i had the eng subs intead of the esp ones

Entirely depends on the show you're watching. I personally exclusively watch my anime subbed but there's no rule that states that dubs ruin anime. There was a time when most anime dubs were literally garbage because anime just wasn't big enough for proper experienced VAs to do their thing.

That has changed though. A lot of the popular stuff these days have reasonably good dubs, with certain dubs even being preferred over the originals by the masses (e.g. Baccano). If you're a person who'd much rather watch your shows dubbed, the best thing to do would be to just Google if the dub of the show you want to watch is any good. If the consensus is that it's good, go for it.

True in a lot of cases. You'll find plenty of anime with extremely deep devotion between two characters of the same sex (e.g. Madoka Magica), but that never gets established into a proper relationship.
Then you have shows that are literally created for homoerotic fanservice but it's best not to expect anything to come out of them. Since fanservice is their main purpose, the creators like to have "moments" between all ships that exists. And that wouldn't be possible if there's a canon relationship. I can't speak for Yurii!! on Ice though. Haven't seen it.
nephilimcat wrote:- A lot of the animation is flat out ridiculous, but I figured that's how anime works (?) It's hilarious, I just wonder if they do that in serious scenes as well.
Depends on the anime. Just bear in mind that anime is not a genre, but a medium. The only difference is that anime can be a lot more versatile in its presentation. I can't say what anime as a whole does because there's no such thing as that. A certain subset of anime might do things a certain way, while another subset tackles the same thing in a different way.
So yeah, there are definitely anime that employ ridiculous animation (e.g. Gurren Lagann) but there are also those that do things in a very subdued, serious way (e.g. Monster).

I guess I'll have to watch more anime to have an opinion on that, but fanservice is okay as long as it's not too extreme imo. And I just started watching AoT and I already like it. Knowing that there will be a lesbian couple at one point, is great

True, that still happens to me. When I hear the word anime, the first things that come to my mind are big eyes and squeaky female voices that scream "senpai". But I figured that's not what anime is all about  It's easy to forget that generalising anime is probably as stupid as generalising all tv shows.

I just saw this on tumblr and it cracked me up - what if Yuri on Ice's Victor was a daily vlogger?

one-very-sexy-katsudon
@mia7437 aight

• Yuuri doesn’t come off as the kind of person that would have his own skating vlog channel but I’m 2638738% he is in so many of Victor’s vlogs that he could basically be considered a vlogger
• Please recall Victor saying Hi~ to the news crew in episode 4, THIS IS HOW HE STARTS EVERY VIDEO
• Victor likes to put Yuuri on the spot when filming
• “say hello to my subscribers, Yuuri!”
• “Em… Uh…. h-hello?”
• “what kind of greeting was that hahahaha”
• The skating otaku community erupted when Victor posted a video titled ‘guess who’s going to be a coach??? :D
• There are a lot of hate comments posted on more recent videos of Victor since a lot of fans are hating on Yuuri for stealing him away
• Sucks for them cause Victor owns the channel and he can delete ur stupid ass comments before Yuuri can see them
• one time Victor live streamed inside the change room at a competition and HOLY SHIT the screenshot count crashed the website
• Sometimes Victor makes Yuuri vlog and frankly he doesn’t know what to do with himself
• “Uh…. hi? So Victor gave me his camera to film my side of the competition…. Uh…. so this is my um… sports bag…. I got it from my mom”
• Victor’s subscribers think Yuuri is the cutest most precious lil baby that must be protected at all costs
• When Victor posts a video without Yuuri, you can bet half the comments are just “WHERES OUR LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE?!”
• It’s like Dan and Phil, but gayer
• Phichit is also a big vlogger
• YUURI AND PHICHIT DO THAT STUPID VLOG-CEPTION THING BECAUSE THEY ARE DORKS
• They film a lot of pre and post game dinners cause that’s when the real shit goes down oooooooh
• sometimes Victor will film himself and Yuuri getting ready in the hotel room before a competition and that is what the fandom truly lives for.

BTW I may or may not have written my first Fanfic ever about Yuri on Ice - I love love and there is so much love between these two I couldnt help myslef. Its not smut, just fluff :)

I don't watch dubs, but I have friends who watch both depending on the type of anime.

To explain; two of my favorite anime are Slayers and NANA. Slayers is a fantasy anime, it's set in another world with magic and demons and dragon and none of the characters are Japanese. Japanese culture or language doesn't play much of a role, so it doesn't matter much if you watch the English version. NANA is a more realistic drama anime about two Japanese women that is set in modern day Japan. There's plenty of references to Japanese culture. By watching it in English, you might take a little bit of authenticity from the series and most of those things can't properly be translated in English speech anyway while subs might have some translator's notes.

A recent example of a dub that completely took away the authenticity of the original is imo the Free! dub, which is also set in modern Japan and can also be categorized under the Slice Of Life genre. They tried to make the boys talk to each other like American frat bros and that's ridiculous and awkward to hear, but even if they hadn't gone that they never would've been able to show the subtle but important difference in how every character speaks and addresses others. Haru never really using honorifics, Makoto being more polite but teasingly using -chan for Haru, Nagisa calling everyone -chan no matter how close they are, Rei's super formal speech and addressing everyone with appropriate honorifics; they're all subtle little looks into the the personalities of the characters and the relationships they have with each other (arguably the most important thing about Free! because who really gives a damn about the swimming) and that is completely lost in the English dub.

Not every series set in modern Japan really tries for realism like NANA or is that deep about the way their characters engage with each other of course, so it might not always matter. But that's maybe something to consider when choosing in which language to watch the anime you wanna see?

Question:
Are there any good yaoi/yuri anime/manga out there that aren't cringe or fetishy? The only other one I have watched, except for Yuri on Ice, has been No. 6. I've encountered some that fall under this genre but have stereotypical tropes

Someone on my Tumblr dash has started watching Sakura Trick and from the gifs she posts it looks absolutely adorable. It's about the high school romance of two girls I think.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is amazing. Aside from the lesbian themes (I think it's only in the movie where they're a confirmed couple though) challenging gender roles is basically the plot of the entire series. And I'm truly overdue for a rewatch 'cause I watched it when I was 13 and half of it flew over my head. Still, it's classic and more new fans should watch it.

Can't really think of any anime rn, but here are two old-school manga series that don't fall under the regular yaoi tropes (and I really mean old, so warning for homophobia and some weird treatment of gayness):

New York New York
I read this ages ago and remember that I loved it. It's a really sweet love story but with lots of angst and some hard to stomach topics. I should probably re-read it as I don't remember the ending, so it might be sad just saying.

Banana Fish

I wish more people knew about this manga because it's a masterpiece. Basically a mafia/street gang thriller, really amazing story. The art style is unique and I love it a lot. The romance is more implied but beautiful. Tragic AF. Will make you cry.
warnings:
violence, (implied) rape, death
If anybody has newer stuff to rec that'd be great! There are lots of yaoi/yuri manga but they all seem to be really short and superficial in characters and plot.

I have heard YuruYuri is a good yuri slice of life anime. I've been watching Sakura Trick, it's a bit cringy places, but the actual romance is so sweet you're gonna get cavities from watching it.
For yaoi, watched few episodes od dramatical murder and can't tell if it's gonna be good yet. I know my friend loved Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, it's in my crunchy queue and apparently it's really good. I have few more shounen ai in my queue but can't tell if they are gonna be good.
Also Akuma no Riddle (i think that is the name) is really nice yuri manga i read while back

victors head is to far in for it to be a kiss, they might have kissed before that shot but i'm not convinced. lets just say its the creators leaving it to interpretation

Ahh I'm glad you watched Hunter x Hunter. I first got into it back in January of 2015 when Digibro made a video about it, and I got deeply obsessed. Honestly when I watched episode 135 (Meruem and Komugi ) I cried for atleast two hours and didn't finish the series until over a year later when I finally got the courage to. That episode ripped me apart. The Chimera Ant arc was my favorite, minus the ending. That said, the ending of the Chimera Ant art also was my favorite part of the series. It was the most emotionally moving thing I've ever seen and it was perfectly made.

On the topic of YOI, all I can say is: OH MY GOD! :o I posted this video I made in the main thread but I think it's more appropriate here:

My all time favorite yaoi mangaka is Shungiku Nakamura. Almost all of her work were turned into anime. You can try watching her most famous work, Junjou Romantica. Her more recent work is Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi. I highly recommend Hybrid Child. But you'll have better experience if you've watched Junjou or Seka.

About Yuri on Ice, that was totally
a hug. The scene was set up for a kiss, yeah, but Victor's head position makes me doubt there was any smooch action. Then again, this is coming from someone who was so sure Kumiko x Reina was gonna be a thing after a literal love confession, but then... You can say I'm still salty and no longer trust easy.

Despite this, I'm still watching Hibike season 2. I don't know why I hurt myself like this.

I thought it was obviously
a kiss. The highlighting of their lips beforehand and the obscuring of their lips with Victors arms seemed pretty suggestive of a kiss. Yuri's eyes widen when the camera switches to behind Victor's head and he's really shocked. You could argue he's shocked by the enthusiastic hugging but they hug all the time? Even the others are shocked, and they have seen them hugging before. Also Victor states he wanted to surprise Yuri but I don't think hugging him would be surprising at all. It's definitely not going to seriously surprise Yuri as he had Victor lying on top of him while he was supposed to be taking a nap earlier in the episode.

YOI
Look at the scene. It's really up to your own interpretation. If you want to see them kiss, they totally did kiss. If you want to see them just hug, they hug. Like really, this show has been so extremely ambiguous for an anime that has no shounen ai/yaoi-tag on it I can't even believe it myself. For me this really pushes the boundaries and it makes me so happy because you could say that they're canon with a straight face, even if they "officially" are not. They can't really directly say they're gay, but they can strongly imply that they are. Japan handles queer relationships in an extremely delicate way because they still are kind of a taboo over there, and they're usually presented in a "soulmate"-kinda way if the show is not exclusively yaoi/yuri.
Also I've never seen a "straight" fujoshibait series that has presented the main relationship in such a blatantly affectionate/romantic/sexual way. And I thought Free!! was extreme for a non-BL series.

Aoi Hana, Tamen De Gushi (technically manhua, but that doesn't really matter here), Asagao to Kase-san, Magan he Danai (also manhua), Girl Friends, Love My Life, Beloved (manhua), Sasameki Koto.
Shounen ai/yaoi "Gender bender"*
Bokura no Hentai, Hourou Musuko.
(*Gender bender is the genre name which I personally kinda dislike, but both of these titles deal with both transgenderism and general cross-dressing/gender identity stuff.
Bolded ones have anime adaptions.

Btw, I finally got around to watch the recent episode...
yeah, that's definitely a kiss. no doubt about it. makes sense in context and what happened, the sparkly lips and everyones surprised reactions, i dont think they're "already dating" at this point but I think they're close enough that they should be lol and I found this on tumblr anyway:
