I cried reading this a lot. I will warn that this story doesn't end well and that the major charater death tag does give away the inevitable. But it's so beautifully heartbreaking and well written.
Wow, what a beautiful and heart wrenching fic. A good cry if you ever need one!

alittledizzy's new fic is just what I needed! Soft, lovely, and perfectly characterized.

You all and your angst can go take a hike! Isn't there enough of that irl?! :platonic: Honestly, though, I am going to freak out if either of them show obvious signs of weight loss anytime soon.

I just read this fic earlier today and it was one of the best I've read in a loooong time:
Once I Was 30 Years Old by outerspacehowlters

Summary: Phil’s 30th birthday brings a flood of growing up-related anxieties, much to his dismay. Dan, however, knows just how to fix it: by recreating the day they met, swapping out Manchester for London–and with a surprise Phil never sees coming.

I'm glad I didn't let the title put me off, because it's named after my absolute most hated song on the planet.

Now this is a fic worthy of being in a big bang:

Let Me Down Gently by INeverHadMyInternetPhase - gorgeous 50k au with a slow burn romance, really good characterization, and angst that plucks at your heart strings just enough for it to really feel amazing when the author makes it all better again. Highly, highly recommend this one.

If you enjoy period piece http://archiveofourown.org/works/853373 ... s/19563175

Summary:

The year is 1817. April blooms and the Social Season is fast approaching; a time for the rich and prosperous to leave their country estates and arrive in London, the perfect backdrop for festivities and to some, the grandest marriage market in the world. The assumed role of the gentry is to become besotted with and court the wealthiest, most suitable ladies to offer; however, not all gentlemen are too keen on upholding their honor, not all are willing to sacrifice their happiness for marriage. These gentlemen have no other choice. Regency Phan AU.

Yes! Best pbb fic, hands down! I stayed up way too late reading it, but it was so worth it.

Hear the Sound of the Falling Rain by lukeinallhisglory - Nice 2011 phan, insecure moody Dan with some inner conflict and - the best part - communication! And resolution! In a happy way! Perfect fic where they work through realistically measures issues and doubts.

Let Me Down Gently was beautiful.

I don't even know much about Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I am really loving Burn and Bloom by jilliancares so far. http://archiveofourown.org/works/8000935

A SUPER good fic I read last year was Closed Eyes by phanallamallama. I cried through about half of it, but I'm a sucker for angst. There's also a (slightly happier but not really honestly) sequel called Him(?) that's a WIP but still really good. At the beginning the author talks about how it's based of a comment that may or may not have been my (very cringey) comment so that's pretty cool too I guess.

This is already in the other fic thread, but in case there are people who don't check there:

Dan and Phil versus the World by mysterylovescompany - another absolutely amazing phandom big bang. This one is 12k and it's extremely canon compliant so if you want to read fic about a mix of past/current/slightly future deppy working through some realistic issues pleaaaaase go read it.

I just finished reading this and I am not okay :wahh: :wahh: :wahh:

The angsty/death fics always get me. I am gross sobbing right now, the unflattering snot bubble/wrinkled up red face kind. 10/10 fic it ripped my life apart, would recommend Amazing writing! I'm being serious, not joking. When you can hear the quotes in their voices you know you're writing a fanfic well

I just read this whole fic in one sitting:

Fool's Gold

Summary:

Fashion designer, or rather fashion student, Dan Howell has just moved to NYC and meets Phil Lester, an aspiring advertising major. Success seems like an easy task but will Dan’s ambition and trips to the other side of the world interrupt his life too much?

Coming from someone who doesn't normally like AUs, I was skeptical when I saw the summary, but it's beautifully written and I literally couldn't stop reading!!

This is succulent the way the writer managed to still merge their real personalities and history in it

I just finished this! Liked it, couldn't say I loved it? Dans character in particular was pretty selfish and naive?? Like he expected so much out of Phil's character and their getting together a million times didn't seem the most healthy. He basically left and didn't care about anything but his career which doesn't seen like something a guy in love would do?? It's pretty good but needs some polishing on the story and the characters :thumb:

I beg to differ in reality, love does not conquer all especially when it comes to ambition and career. They were only at the stage of bf not engaged/married, hence personal development will tend to be main focus especially when you just started a career.

Infact marriages do break when spouses could not agree with their other half decision to move for career sake, especially in USA where your country is so damn vast. In smaller country such as UK it is still quite manageable.

Lets just say being in the position myself at a young age love is secondary when opportunities come, blame it on being individualistic and not knowing to prioritise but then who can guarantee the person you love at that very moment is the real thing.

Sorry to rant, its just how I see it from my view but saying that you are right in looking at it from your own perspective.

I was talking more from the perspective that Dan expected Phil to leave his job in NYC and live with him in Paris "out of love" which was naive but when Phil refused he just left and didn't contact him for the whole 6 months which I found strange. He expected Phil to move out of love but then cut all ties with him when he refused. But maybe it was character growth??

(Sorry for totally jumping into the middle of your conversation but I just finished it (I loved it!) and I thought I would give my two cents)
I get what you're saying but I can't say I agree. I think for Dan, the fear of rejection was too great to even attempt and contact Phil. He was so worried that Phil would hate him and/or have someone new, and that he wouldn't want to talk with him, Dan had rather just focus on his work and not even allow his heart to be broken more. That's another thing; in the beginning, Dan didn't want a relationship because he was going to a new school in a new country and he wanted to focus on his studies. I feel like maybe this was a similar thing- he was in a new country with a new (very important) job, and he might have felt like it was just too much to try and fix a relationship (which would be a long-distance one, had it been fixed) on top of that. Granted, the author didn't really mention that, so maybe that's not right at all, but that's kind of how I took it. (Of course there's also the thing of that even if he had tried to contact Phil, he had gotten a new number, but )

This actually makes alot more sense then what I initially got from the story :platonic: It just didn't make sense to me since it took them so long to finally get together and both had to mature. The feelings were so strong that it felt too abrupt to suddenly end it over something that small? I would like to think, given their strong feelings that were hinted throughout, that they would be more mature about addressing the relationship and even trying to do long-distance (idk why this part bothered me so much im sorry :shame: )

Yeah I get what you mean. I got strong "I'm not good at communication" vibes from Dan at the end  (but I'm glad what I said made sense!)
