That video was a lot better than I expected, I was laughing the whole time , especially when the app fucked up the smile filter on the picture of Dan

that app made me almost have an asthma attack laughing when it made me a man, so i was super chuffed to see deppy attempting it. it's the best when it glitches! those teeth! i was crying.

i really want to see them try to follow a makeup tutorial now.

I agree about the angle, but it's such a sweet, unstaged, candid photo. I don't know, I love the photos Phil takes of Dan so I might be biased.

That last photo of Dan reminds me of boys from years ago, yikes. I hope they add something to the wall, the room looks plain being so big. They do make pretty girls, but the rest of the filters are frightening. The intro was fun, though, Dan's reaction to Phil's "Faces" line was funny.

When they used the "girl" filter on Dan, I didn't see any resemblance to Louise until he mentioned it, and now I can't unsee it. :wtf:

That would be so good. I can see it now - Dan attempts a smokey eye (or Phil tries to do it for him) and ends up looking like his idol Pete Wentz who he then remembers unfollowed him, ending with the video of Dan with smudged eyeliner everywhere and tears running down his cheeks.

That's all I want in life now.

(Also looking forward to Dil video soon! I hope they age Dab up or focus on Tabitha a bit more, I was binging some of the recent ones the other day and realised that Tabitha brings in a LOT of money but they don't do much with her. Apart from let her be abducted. I just want to see if when Dab ages he has their iconic emo fringeTM, and if he does I will die happily. Or of laughter. That's the other thing I want in life.)

Its been a week, and we have more than twenty thousand responses to the 2017 Dan and Phil Survey.

The survey still has a couple of months to run, though, and if you haven't done it yet we'd appreciate it if you did.

You can find more info over here, along with a link to the survey.

This may be a mindset for an American, but I'd just like to say that there other places in the world where inequality still exists, for all different types of people, and erasing people's struggles is doing the opposite of good. "Reverse racism" may not exist for you, but that doesn't mean there are groups and communities of white people being discriminated against.

I can see your point of how their use of the Japanese language may be ignorant for some, but there's nothing malicious about the use. Where exactly does the line of cultural appropriation draw the line? Where's the point where people can have a genuine appreciation and draw inspiration from other cultures?

Yay! Gaming room! Is that tile on the floor? (That might not be so good for the sound carrying to the neighbors). Nice lighting! Dan's hair is a lovely rich brown, not the faded color it was before that made me question his natural hair briefly (I love curly/wavy Dan it was just looking grey on DAPG because of the intense light being on his side).

Bless Phil for the little lamps. But they kept the futon They also kept the board/table leaf, you little thieves! The red cabinet is intriguing. It reminds me of the YouTube logo (but it also makes it feel like they are in a very large laundry room) are those closets on the right wall? I'm sure they'll add more to the walls, at least the YouTube plaque for the gaming channel.

Yay pink shirt on Dan and Phil's butterfly shirt! They both look lovely. I'm on my second watch if this and mostly I love how they are reacting to the others looks. Dan's little tantrum at 4:40 "No! I don't like this!" in reaction to female!Phil is the best. Bless.

The color of their selfies for this game are horrible is it the phone or the app itself? I keep having to do a double take to the right and be like no Phil is still pale and beautiful.

"You don't know the ship name, Phil? Do you even lesbian on Wattpad?" No. No I don't think that he does. Smokey eyed Dan, I'm down for that. Ladybird Phil

I really liked the video, it was so funny! Dan talking about eye make up, Phil saying Danny over and over and just, so funny, I really needed something light-hearted like that. (also I downloaded the faceapp just yesterday to be traumatized by my own face for months so it was funny to see that my face isn't the only face that makes the most horrible mutations with that app ) Also I'd like to quote myself from fw days back about DAPG videos in the new place:

Cry laughed over the final Faceapp edits, dear god, it's the middle of the night my neighbours probably hate me now.

It's strange to see them film in a different space. Also we haven't seen any natural light or doors or windows yet so in my head they' exist literally in these rectangular boxes with all their stuff.

Also, Corndog, that's... flattering

That was a cute surprise DAPG, just when I was moaning about missing DAPG earlier today! However, every time I see the thumbnail for the video, I get freaked out because Phil looks EXACTLY like my oldest daughter...same nose, same cheeks, same eyes, same hair (although she's blonde, not grey )!!

Dan will be more free to be quoted as Dan Howell and not danisnotonfire but he'll still continue to use the danisnotonfire name where it's most applicable - just like Louise now being Louise Pentland on twitter and being comfortable with her full name as a primary association, but still utilizing Sprinkle of Glitter in some of her branding.

I don't actually think this will involve more of a change in content than what we've already seen shifting. The things Dan wanted to leave behind seem to have already been left behind.
what you're saying seems really reasonable to me and it's kind of what i'm expecting now, too. what i can't imagine, however, is how a video introducing this change would look like -- after all, there wouldn't be a huge announcement to make in this case. i remember speculation in an older thread (whenever the first mention of the cheeky video was) that it might contain skits about people getting his username wrong, but i can't really see how this would work out. but oh well, i'm not writing dan's scripts, so i'll wait for him to surprise us.

about the merch i just want to ask -- does someone here know what the writing actually says? i'm really curious about that.
with respect to the discussion i'll just see what others have to say about it as i don't feel qualified to add valid points.

i didn't expect a new video today so it was a pleasant surprise! as others have already mentioned, the new gaming room looks so good -- and the lighting! no more greyish hair for dan! the video itself was good and made me laugh all the time. little snippets i remember and liked (in small font because after i typed that i realised that they are not as...eloquent...as i planned them to be...oh well):
- what is wrong with dan to criticize the ladybug sweater selfie
- phil setting up boxes as tables and decorating them with the lamps was too cute, as was the entire intro
- i loved their confusion about the "male"/"female" filter (highpitched "what does that even meaaaan" sums it up pretty well imo), and dan correcting himself to "if i embraced make-up" without preposed "as a girl". *phil voice* yaaaaas
- phil was so attractive with the "female" filter wtf
- i can't believe they stole the goddamn table
- phil's reaction to old!dan was so soft??? what did i witness??
- "i need a new profile pic" "let's just photoshop curls on that one" was hilarious to me for some reason
- i loved how phil was just like "that one's on me, i don't care if it's cringe, we're doing that as long as it's still relevant" at the beginning. more of phil not having any fucks to spare, please.

I'm working on a huge final project right now for class and this video was the best mood booster. The filters were seriously funny, I loved all the individual commentary on the pictures too lol.

Also living for the "new" vibes in the room, it obviously needs more things added in there but the lighting is already a huge plus :D

...also when Dan was mentioning if he ever got into makeup.. And then Phil mentioned if Dan would be a smokey eye kind of guy and Dan happily agreed.. Sign me up

there's nothing malicious about the use maybe but it definitely normalises the "omg im such a weeaboo!!" mentality in the younger audience especially. i keep seeing people using that word like its something that just means youre a bit of a dork. a large reason of why i stopped interacting with d+p fans (even here!) even before i stopped watching them so much is because of the fetishisation of east asian people and cultures that people are proud to share as a community trait.
it just feels creepy to have people talk about how theyre obsessed with your ancestry and try to engage with you about minor parts of that culture, especially when their knowledge of that culture is lacking beyond a couple tv shows and a pop group nobody here likes.

basically, my main problems with it are that its just encouraging this behaviour, like a few things they do. "i like japan" shouldnt be a personality trait, especially when youre profiting from it. i know more than a couple of east asians who feel uncomfortable in the phandom now because of this stuff. its especially weird when, to my knowledge, neither of them speak japanese beyond "haha senpai!!" got a genuine appreciation for japanese language and culture? buy from a japanese brand, dont sell or buy the stuff because its ~your aesthetic~

also while its relevant, the obsession with boys/amab people in makeup also drove me out of the community before video quality did. not here for being 14 year old girls on instagrams fun new doll because i wear dresses and glitter, not here for obsessing over how a grown man presents because it would fit your edgy views more if he was more Queer™. its weird that the phandoms obsession with being inclusive and different just pushes people out lol

I really don't want t pick fights but that's how it ended up but like I said people love sharing their culture and they have no issue with this, so what exactly is the issue?
SexyTrashCan wrote: Exactly! But honestly raising this point is pointless because some people don't listen to logic
ok.....but this is just my opinion and how i personally feel about the matter. your opinion is also an opinion and not 'logic'. i'm not saying my opinion is right or wrong because i'm white so i'm not speaking on behalf of people who are japanese. i just personally don't want to wear a language i don't understand that was put on clothing for aesthetic purposes. some people love 'sharing' (it's not d&ps to share) their culture but there's also people that don't.

first thing: hey, haven't seen you post in a while, hope life's good

second: your post was well articulated and actually give a proper explanation of how they profit from using the japan branding, rather than just state "its bad" with no explanation. I appreciate that. I agree, while they have stated how they are unapologetically "weaboos" they have reduced the culture to a novelty for their audience. I understand your alienation btw I respect your decision to distant yourself

1. i didn't quote this bit but you talked about ppl misusing the word weeaboo. i only know it as a word for anime nerds and just, what is it actually?

2. yeah, tbh i've been thinking of getting the black cherry blossom sweater bc it's a good picture/design of dnp and it would match some of my clothes, but ehhhhh about the writing on it. idk, i'm not a fan of wearing clothes that i can't read. edit: this is more an aesthetic thing than a belief thing. i don't like writing on clothes in general and i'm paranoid that if i can't read it it could say anything

3. so with you on the amab ppl in makeup thing, tho i do it a bit myself. my thought process is more like "yes! more queer representation, more people being okay with vaguely gender-y stuff" as that directly benefits me as a queer, vaguely gender-y person.
also dan is good looking and i like makeup in general so

an argument over them using a different language on their merch... really guys? i'm all up for calling out cultural appropriation but this is just??

also, reverse racism does exist - i have a white polish friend who could prove that to you (try not to forget about white minorities as well!)

Agreed. I just think that language is not the same as culture. To me, language isn't something that belongs to anyone because we all have the capacity to learn different language, change language, have individual differences in dialects and usage, etc. etc. etc. Cultural appropriation is real but I don't think that Dan and Phil putting some Japanese graphemes on a shirt is something that anyone should be too concerned about.
There are much worse things to be upset over in this world.

it basically is, but its an insult. its not just "haha hes a loser for liking anime, thats CARTOONS!" its like... "its incredibly embarassing that you think a country is a hobby and you entirely misunderstand a lot about that country and as japanese people we want to be nowhere near you"

thats xenophobia, and for any european country usually stems from religious or (often centuries) old political discrimination. your white polish friend isnt being discriminated for being white.

As someone who started off as a (white) weaboo, then studied Japanese for 6 years, lived there, and acquired a much deeper appreciation for the history and culture of the country, and as someone who also likes the look of Japanese kana, cherry blossoms, pastel colours and D&P shirts, I still wouldn't wear the new merch. jaej expressed it much better than I ever could. D&P have nothing to do with Japan, really. It's not 'theirs' just because they went on holiday there and they like sushi and anime. They claim to 'love Japan' and express it as a part of who they are and a part of their 'nerdiness' when they only know it on such a superficial level and don't seem to care about the country past the pop culture. I feel like I'm making a big deal over it but it feels so wrong to buy something with their names written in kana. It would make more sense if they had a huge fan base in Japan and this was a japhanshop exclusive maybe? The shirt looks very pretty but I also don't like the idea of Asian script being used as an aesthetic for them to profit off of.

I loved this new video and actually got quite couple-y vibes off it. Just thinking about them all cosy and safe in their new, barely-decorated home before anyone (inevitably) discovers their whereabouts and having complete privacy does things to my insides
