dan is objectively very good for someone who is self-taught and doesn't know how to read sheet music. i think that's mostly the point people are making when they praise him and enjoy listening to his snippets
re: flaps discussion on last page
it's horrifying to remember those who don't 'know' dan, like that youtube comment, can misinterpret a comment as agreeing with them that the thing Dan has respect for and repeats/corrects a lot is a 'cancer'. that's a big problem, when you think about it...(don't really know what the answer is though, you shouldn't have to cease sharing a sense of humour on sensitive topics with your core audience)

I was thinking about how Dan mentioned in his liveshow that his family all called him Daniel and I remembered that about ?last year? some people here deciphered what that christmas card Dan had in the mantlepiece said. I had the idea that it said 'Dear Dan' (as if it said Daniel I think we would have discussed that) but now I really want to go back and check. Can someone tell me in each thread it was? Or if Dan had ever mentioned his family only calling him Daniel?

dianapml, the Christmas card you're talking about is summed up here and in the posts above it: http://indepthbants.com/post46495.html#p46495
It says 'To Dan'. I don't think it's a big deal though. They could call him Daniel most of the time, but still use a nickname on a Christmas card.

Thank you! Yes, I wasn't questioning what Dan said, I agree with you.Susannah wrote:dianapml the Christmas card you're talking about is summed up here: http://indepthbants.com/post46495.html#p46495

This is cute...I wish I could draw!
Re. PianoDan, I think he's really good considering he only had a handful of lessons when he was much younger and has only had a crappy piano to practice on in recent years. Being able to play by ear is a blessing. Bit of context: I met my husband at uni where we both did music degrees, he played piano, I played sax and flute. We were both grade 8+ standard but, because he couldn't play by ear, he had to do endless practice and really analyse what he was playing, whereas because I could play by ear, I found it much easier and could get away with doing a lot less work. He used to really resent that ha ha! I could also improvise easily, which is something he really struggled with.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how Dan develops his piano playing, he clearly gets a lot of enjoyment from it. I hope he learns the rest of the YOI piece as it's gorgeous
Finally, HAPPY STAR WARS DAY!

Omg Dan as sassy Rey. I gave a very undignified squeak. Yeah, I'm going to need a calendar next year...

I enjoyed this whole rant and I agree for the most part. I don't play piano, but I am a trained singer so I know a bit about this stuff. I would argue, however, that Dan does NOT have perfect pitch. That's a misnomer. I think what you mean to say is that Dan has a good ear - he can hear songs and figure them out easily because he understands chord progressions and basic movements in music because he can hear them, not because he learned them. I was also born with a good ear. I can pick out accidental notes that don't belong or predict how a piece will go just because I hear it and feel it, but I don't have perfect pitch.Pianist Flutist wrote:
If he had perfect pitch, you'd be able to play notes and he could tell you which note they are without looking, or if you said "Sing a C3" he'd be able to perfectly do that. I don't believe that he can. There are not very many who do have perfect pitch.
I don't mean to attack lol, it's just that people often tell me that I have perfect pitch because I have a good singing voice and I can hear and correct when my voice goes a little off very easily, and I usually have to explain to them why they're wrong. I just don't want people here to be thinking that Dan's some kind of whiz kid who can hear a complicated chord once and name all the notes in it.
I am always on Phil Lester's side

De-lurking to add to this - I always thought his family called him Daniel because at about 3:11 in this video someone refers to him as Daniel:dianapml wrote:Off topic:

I agree with this. I don't think it's so much (or at least, I hope it isn't so much) that people think he's some kind of piano prodigy so much as they enjoy that he's interested in piano and has a good ear/is obviously still interested in learning, then go way overboard encouraging him.mermaid blood wrote:dan is objectively very good for someone who is self-taught and doesn't know how to read sheet music. i think that's mostly the point people are making when they praise him and enjoy listening to his snippets
Some more peer interaction around Dan's rebranding:
(He liked Liam's tweet, but not Hazel's. )
I guess they're flying to Orlando today...have seen some other YouTubers who appear to be en route!
New Sims video tonight do you think? Dab upgrade? Hope so, I'm just interested to see what his hair looks like!

I agree and this is what I thought too I only said he has perfect pitch bc that is what he claimed in a live show. I didn't really believe him tho lol but I just added that bc he said it himself. I have the same thing! I can distinguish wrong notes and stuff but I don't have have perfect pitch- I don't think think Dan knows what perfect pitch is if he claims he has it then lol but I wasn't sure- thatnks for confirming this!

Yay another flutist!! Best instrument everrrr and yeah it's so much easier to compose when I can play by ear- I don't have perfect pitch but on the flute sometimes I'll just play random notes and I'll know what notes sound good toghther and be able to make a piece- alsoI played sax and flute
I can play songs from the radio on the piano by ear lost of the time- it makes everything so much easier to have a good ear!! It's cool that u have a degree in flute!

I have a BA (hons) in Music with sax as my first study. I enjoyed the flute but I was very average at it and really struggled to get to grade 8 (I failed the first time I took it!) It's a shame that I don't play anymorePianist Flutist wrote:Yay another flutist!! Thank you for pointing that out. This also reminded me of this video from a lady who was in Dan's class in primary school, and she always addresses him as Daniel I believe, and she pointed out in the comments how everyone at school called him Daniel and she only heard him being mentioned as Dan on Youtube. There was a photo I saw that someone posted (here?) of Dan as a child with a group of girlfriends and a girl very alike the one in this video was in the picture, so it must be her.cosmicdisco wrote:De-lurking to add to this - I always thought his family called him Daniel because at about 3:11 in this video someone refers to him as Daniel:dianapml wrote:Off topic:

I was thinking about that today. I was in Uni, practically staring at the wall whilst doing work and thinking 'I wonder what Dabs hair will turn out like.' How sad of me.DatCog wrote:I guess they're flying to Orlando today...have seen some other YouTubers who appear to be en route!

I am praying that he has emo hair. Just imagine. I'm also wondering what they'll dress him like and what traits they'll give him.
I fixed the embedding in your post. There's a handy guide in our Forum FAQs that covers embedding both full and shortened youtube links.dianapml wrote:Here's the video (I think we have talked about this before but I have the memory of a goldfish):

Based on Phil's tweets I'd agree that he flew yesterday. And I can't imagine them leaving a day apart (I could see if Phil went ahead by like five days, but no.) Oh wait, now I'm reading them in context. They are replies, so he wasn't necessarily breathing in "the fresh scent of eagles and waffles" yet.alittledizzy wrote:

Anywho. I managed to jot down the exact quote about storage.
"'Enough storage?' So much storage. You have no idea. An incredible amount of storage, just surplus storage."
Combine that with: "I am upstairs (quote quote) in this apartment, as you'll have known that this apartment is on like nine floors, basically, it's super complicated, there's like a lounge downstairs which is super nerdy looking, which is where we're going to play video games and film videos and there's a small lounge upstairs here which is basically just a bunch of grey carp... (splutter) chairs which is just for sitting in, but we're not going to bother dragging lights and stuff upstairs, so you'll probably not see this other than in uh photos that Phil inevitably posts of me like doing something like what, stop taking photos of me you creep."
So seven floors of storage, a major exaggeration or some 999 ???
Sorry, I'm reading too much into things. I'm just going to continue re-watching The Story of TATINOF before I have to cancel YouTubeRed. (And freak out over their seperate hotel rooms floors charade).

I think Dan in the video said that he was called 'Dan Howell' in high school and that's why it reminded him of school, and the lady in the video is talking about primary school, when they were 5-8 years old.awsugar wrote:haven't had a chance to watch the video yet since i forgot my headphones but wouldn't this contradict what he said about using daniel since being called 'dan howell' reminds him of school?dianapml wrote:Thank you for pointing that out.
