My thought was that i wish they would just tell us the truth instead of hinting and flirting and what-not, and honest sit down video with no jokes or rolled eyes.
But then I started thinking, what if that was an honest sit down video about how they are not together? Not old content from years ago but a new one.
Would you believe it? Especially if it did not change how they behaved toward each other? DnP have not really truly mentioned it in years, but what if they did? It's easy to deny the campy bus tour stuff, but what about seriousness?
What would it take you to truly believe they are not together?
ps. Anti-phannies could technically answer this as well. If they truly came out, but didn't change their behavior at all, would you really believe it? Or would you still think it's fanservice to make money? What would it take to make you believe they are together?
(This is just a thought exercise, please don't start wars over it. I am just interested in what makes a thing real for you. Even in Yuri on Ice there are still disbelievers, because they were not 100% flat out and instead hinted at things, even if they hinted really really obviously. It makes me soooo curious about what is going on in our heads. Psychology student, can't help it.)
pps. I want my sims video, I'm jonesing here!
I'd believe it.
My opinion about D&P is they are fairly unconventional men who have a fairly unconventional relationship (romantic or otherwise). People have interpreted their unconventional relationship as being romantic and D&P benefit greatly in terms of $$ from that now. They make money by keeping their audience engaged and interested. "Phan" is a part of that and they know it. I don't think they orchestrated phan on purpose- I don't think they ever set out to mislead people like that at all. But now that it has happened, I think they're hyper-aware of it and it influences all of their interactions in the public eye. I think they would lose money if they stopped catering to it, and they know that, so they won't anytime soon. But if they did, I absolutely would believe them, because I don't see what they have to gain from doing that.
If they sat down and seriously said they weren't together, the fallout would be horrendous.
1. The mystery would be gone - they would lose some appeal. (Not all, obviously)
2. Shippers would be disappointed and many would feel sad, possibly even depressed, AND blame them for ship baiting / queer-baiting, thus liking them considerably less
3. Non-shippers would accuse them of ship-baiting (edited typo) and probably rub it in former-shipping fans' faces
That would be a nightmare. Would they survive it? Maybe. They have a lot of people who love them as individual human beings and they are funny, intelligent guys. But I think it would seriously damage everything they have going on right now. So if they did that, yes I'd believe it.
In terms of why they don't make it clear:
IDB recently had a great discussion (IMO) about the expectation for non-straight people to come out which I think is important to point out here again. But also: they are entertainers. Their job is to engage and entertain their audience. Their job is not to disclose intimate details about their private lives. That's why I personally don't mind that they don't. Am I curious? Yeah, of course!! But I don't expect them to do that. They shouldn't have to; they don't have to.
This is my first post- hi. This is just my opinion- it's totally fine if people feel differently- I'm not attacking anyone who feels differently!
I'm having a stress.
