i don't think that it would necessarily have been quite such a big deal to them if they weren't doing it together. it's much less of a big deal to be openly queer in some way on bbc radio as a dj than being openly queer in some way and in a relationship with your co-dj who is also your flatmate on bbc radio. the potential for that becoming the main thing they were known for was huge, and i suspect that "those 2 gay lovers" was not what they were going for with their bbc personas.bookfiend wrote:Catallena you make a good point about the other Radio DJs I had forgotten. I definitely agree with this, yeah. BBC wanted their chemistry but they wanted it when they could play around with innuendo and still ultimately have two non-threateningly ambiguous guys who at face value presented themselves as friends. Not sure they'd have taken the chance if the relationship and/or either of their sexualities were, at the time, explicitly stated.adequate duck wrote:i don't think that it would necessarily have been quite such a big deal to them if they weren't doing it together. it's much less of a big deal to be openly queer in some way on bbc radio as a dj than being openly queer in some way and in a relationship with your co-dj who is also your flatmate on bbc radio. the potential for that becoming the main thing they were known for was huge, and i suspect that "those 2 gay lovers" was not what they were going for with their bbc personas.bookfiend wrote:Catallena you make a good point about the other Radio DJs I had forgotten. *checks IDB this morning, slowly backs away*
*comes back two hours later, nope*
Oh well. Focusing on the positive.
Perfect content for the kiddo, the husband didn't want to watch it because he's a monster, but he enjoyed Mario Kart. (Sorry for getting the breath on your back quote wrong. I made it more shippy, oops.)
Question: We could not make out whether there was a "not" in Phil's mumbled furry comment. Could anyone else tell?
Ooo! Very much yes to the above!!!

Yes, these were also two of my favorite moments as well. Also Dan needing a moment, shaking his head with his prayer hands. Phil being just so excited. Dan talking softly to Sigma like he did with Dewey the Kola. Dan saying he's going to steal the puppy, in the most adorable non-threatening way. This is my favorite Dan. I need more of him in my life.opendoor wrote:At 4:00, when Dan caught Phil sneaking the puppy a treat even though it didn't do the trick and he was like "I couldn't help it" Also when the puppy crossed the "bridge", that was the cutest shit.

I listened to the part several times and I think what he is saying is 'Not that I am saying that I'm a furry'.autumnhearth wrote:

I couldn't hear the "not" part, but when I watched it the first few times, I took it as a side comment to Dan. His tone sounded like he was saying it in a sort of self-conscious way, if that makes any sense. Like, "It sounds like I am saying that I'm a furry!" but he casually dropped the first few words. (But maybe he did say "not" and I just didn't pick up on it. That's just what I heard.)äää wrote:I listened to the part several times and I think what he is saying is 'Not that I am saying that I'm a furry'.autumnhearth wrote:

EDIT: (And the conversation has sort of passed, but since I was the one who brought up her previous dog care stuff, I just wanted to say that I personally can't bring myself to hate Cat, for the dog stuff or for anything else. Her content isn't for me, but her dog incidents seemed like they were taken by some D&P fans and raised up as excuses for their already-formulated, spiteful opinions of her. I think the things she did were irresponsible, and I really hope she's learned from it, but beyond that I don't have many feelings about her at all. Although when my family got our new puppy I did tell everyone to keep their socks off the floor haha.)

Oh and my husband (un)kindly pointed out that Dan was getting in Phil's space/off-center because they were playing the screens opposite them (criss-cross) so that they didn't have to do the weird switch and flip image. Not that they normally need an excuse for the arm touching, but it did actually make me feel better about them being off-center. Is there any other solution for this or have they just doomed themselves because of their name/seating order? I'll take leaning over reverse images any day.

I don't wanna sound rude to Cat but if that's her house they were in, then it looks pretty damn spacious imo. If she's begging money off of her subs and has a house that size... idk, if she's renting it sits slightly wrong with me. If she's already taken out a mortgage on it, I can understand slightly more.
I thought most trained dog breeders didn't let pups be seperated from their mums until at least 8 weeks had passed. I remember watching a show (I think it was Panorama, they had an ep on puppy farming within the UK) and they mentioned one of the red lights was breeders who were okay with the pups being split from their mothers when they were only a few weeks old (also remember how some puppy farmers were bringing in show mothers, so when families asked to see the pups mother - thinking they were confirming that the puppys hadn't been farmed - they were just presented with a bitch of the same breed; it was horrifying tbh).
I have a feeling when if Dan and Phil adopt a dog, they'd spend a lot of time on dogtime.com comparing different features of dog breeds... at least, I'd hope they would. I'd prefer it they could pick a dog that's good for a novice to start (although I really want a Norwegian Buhund so who am I to start saying they should get novice dogs aha).

oh absolutely. in fact i'm pretty sure that people at the bbc know a lot more than we do. that is pretty much my point, that any relationship beyond "heterosexual friends" explicitly confirmed by them to the public would lead to way more speculation and overshadow anything else they did/will do in their careers.Catallena wrote:Absolutely true, although coming out to the BBC would not necessarily mean coming out to the public that is listening/watching.adequate duck wrote:i don't think that it would necessarily have been quite such a big deal to them if they weren't doing it together. it's much less of a big deal to be openly queer in some way on bbc radio as a dj than being openly queer in some way and in a relationship with your co-dj who is also your flatmate on bbc radio. the potential for that becoming the main thing they were known for was huge, and i suspect that "those 2 gay lovers" was not what they were going for with their bbc personas.bookfiend wrote:Catallena you make a good point about the other Radio DJs I had forgotten. [offtopic]Am I kind of a dick for secretly wishing Phil (and Dan) would get their teeth straightened? I don't know if it's the new room lighting, new camera (or plethora of zoom-effects in the last gaming video), but my eyes keep focusing on Phil's teeth especially. Earlier in the thread when the topic was on Phil's hair, my though was I think his hair suits him well enough, it's just out dated and time for a change up—my eyes however keep lingering on their teeth (again maybe the better lighting/camera). I mean, they must have invisalign or something similar in the U.K. that's unobtrusive and not fixed into place unlike braces? Or maybe I'm being to vain and if they don't care why should I? re: Sigma's age - we don't know whether the puppies were abandoned at the shelter without their mum though, that's quite a common occurrence at the shelter I've volunteered with. Ultimately I don't think we know anywhere near enough information to judge Cat on her decision to adopt a third puppy. As far as I'm aware, we don't know if she rents or owns her apartment (but regardless, I'm renting and own a dog, there are some landlords that allow pet ownership). Cat has managed to keep two dogs alive for six and three years respectively, I don't think it's fair to presume that she won't be able to manage a third. I'm sure if she puts in the time and effort, and researches effectively, she'll be okay
(also droopy very much agree with your post re: Cat!!)
+ adequateduck I completely agree with you, I think dnp's potential relationship status would have been more of an issue regarding BBC's decision to hire them than their individual sexualities - taking on a couple is undeniably risky!
phantasy personally I don't see anything wrong with their teeth! I think imperfect teeth are quite nice actually, and give people personality. Straightening teeth is expensive and painful, and while I have no doubt Dan and Phil could both afford braces I don't think it's necessary at all. A lot of people have imperfect teeth, and I think it's just America/Hollywood that has pushed a high standard of having perfectly straight, white teeth

And it's uncommon outside of USA to get braces just for cosmetic reasons. Crooked teeth alone aren't a good enough reason to spend that much time and money on something that could damage your teeth roots or go just end up shifting back eventually.

can't remember which ls, but phil was asked if he'd had braces, said no. said something about liking his crooked teeth, but would get braces if he needed them. he shared a story about a friend who had braces and said her mouth felt weird after they were removed. idk if that helps anyone know which ls it was, but i listen to them every night to sleep, so i'm 100% sure it happened.

I know what you're talking about, it was in one of Phil's liveshows earlier this year. Someone asked him uf he was gonna fix his teeth and he said no and that his teeth "adds character". I agree that his crooked teeth add character and I think they suit him well. Also, coming from someone who has braces, it's not worth it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.MythicalPinkTrashCan wrote:I feel like he's talked about liking his crooked teeth? I'll search for a link. Can't find anything. A little appreciation for Phil's teeth under the spoiler:
I don't blame anyone for being bothered about their teeth if you're used to perfectly straight teeth, it's probably a distraction, but I think they both have pretty nice teeth (and smiles) and I'd never want them to change, as long as they're healthy and they like them I've always loved Phil's little incisor on the right side of his mouth (his left), is that odd? Haha.

I personally hate 'Hollywood perfect'TM teeth - don't get me wrong, if people need braces cause the crooked teeth cause them problems, than it's all fine. But to have these strange beauty standards pushed on rest by Hollywood - not cool. Cause srsly the teeth of Hollywood people look like a copy of a copy of a copy. I was so happy when Tatiana Maslany said in her interview that she was pushed to have her teeth done but she said no and she has one of the loveliest smiles everPhantasy wrote:[offtopic]Am I kind of a dick for secretly wishing Phil (and Dan) would get their teeth straightened? From a few pages back, but I found a thing and got excited! Some more talented person will have to post a screenshot if you want to see it here, but I was on a archaeological AmazingPhil adventure because his odd li'l self soothes me when I'm on edge (I wish I'd known about him in 2008, honestly I'd have felt so much less weird and alone) and sorted his videos from oldest to newest. I found footage of Martyn and his very red hair in video called "The Island" from August 2008. I like the video because it's that old schools strange vloggy thing he used to do and contains Mama Lester as well, who I adore... but the hair color confirmation is a lovely bonus. If Phil's natural color is anywhere close I would be SO IN for him going back to it. I like it as it is, and obviously he does too... but I'm a sucker for redheads.eevee wrote:I was going to just get a pic of Martyn and say "consider:" but martyn literally always wears a hat EXCUSE ME, I WANT TO SEE THE HAIR

yeah, being a gay couple could've become their "thing" under certain circumstances. However, I think at this point, it is a lot of what they're known for, or at least all the phan speculation. When's the last time you said "dan and phil" to someone who was vaguely aware of them, to be immediately asked the question "are they gay/dating?" And, just look at the try guys' impression of them.adequate duck wrote:oh absolutely. in fact i'm pretty sure that people at the bbc know a lot more than we do. that is pretty much my point, that any relationship beyond "heterosexual friends" explicitly confirmed by them to the public would lead to way more speculation and overshadow anything else they did/will do in their careers.
And the BBC hired them both, presumably for their chemistry. Dating or not, their relationship is a thing they're known for, and the BBC was on board with that.
Not really sure what my argument is here, but just some further thoughts.
I just wanted to say thanks for this insight. I hope Cat does her homework on how to properly care for the breed.Catallena wrote:
As a few people mentioned, this is mainly a cultural difference. Coming from an American, we grow up with a very high standard for teeth, and we're super caught off guard by people with crooked teeth because it's so unheard of here. So I don't blame you for noticing it.Phantasy wrote:[offtopic]Am I kind of a dick for secretly wishing Phil (and Dan) would get their teeth straightened?[/offtopic]
However, in Britain and other parts of the world, straightening teeth is much less common, and fun fact, same with getting your wisdom teeth out. Since I've learned this, I'm much more in this camp. I had braces against my will as a child, granted I did have a tooth grow in improperly so I had a bit to fix, I had to deal with braces for 5ish years, including a palate expander when I was as young as 7ish, which was the worst pain of my life at the time. Shifting your teeth hurts, and getting impressions for retainers and things like invisalign triggers your gag reflex, and makes you feel like you're choking to death for a few minutes straight. I seriously wouldn't wish this on anyone that doesn't need it, and it breaks my heart that nearly every kid in America these days goes through it for no reason at all.

Phil looks like he went to sleep at 6 AM and is dying inside, Dan glows like he spent the night having orgasms - Ticia
It's you and the fact you've been conditioned to see straight teeth as better. In Japan, for a while there was a trend to have cooked, fang like teeth - so popular that in fact people would go to dentists and have their teeth artificially crooked. But tbh I don't like that Phil's smile can sometimes be so gummy, that's one of the things I find so unattractive in people.Phantasy wrote:[offtopic]Am I kind of a dick for secretly wishing Phil (and Dan) would get their teeth straightened? Bit late, but I loved the gaming video and Cat's puppy video. It's fun to see them play Mario Kart kind of cooperatively and it gave us a few golden comments. Blue shells where? Ouch.
The puppy video is amazing, I loved just seeing their legs with them sitting on the ground. Cat handing the puppy to Phil and his excitement level off the charts, then handing it to Dan and him holding this tiny creature in those big hands. Phew. And instant face licking.
I was surprised they're home again so soon, hope they're getting over the jetlag all right.

And this is not meant to be an attack, since this mindset seems to be common and I don't blame anyone for having it. I just think it's a bit sad that the world is so focused on appearance and perfection instead of the little quirks that make you you.

it feels like with all this "don't curl, quiff" stuff we're trying to create some perfect image of them. but imo it's not what we liked them for in the first place
that's a great thread name btw, don't get me wrong, by that I just mean a few last pages and this whole "what Phil should and shouldn't do" discussion
it's not a bad thing as I guess everyone here wants the best for them, it's a normal thing if you care for someone
it's just... without all these little things it wouldn't be them anymore
personally I like Phil´s (not so) crooked teeth. I like his baggy pant-knees, his posture, his hands movements. even though I wouldn't mind another hairstyle if he wants one some day, I like his fringe, too. simply because it's him. I would never want them to look like Hollywood stars because their imperfections is what I like about them. wow what a stan here
but in all seriousness, for me that's what makes them closer and more relatable, unique and more endearing

it's not a bad thing as I guess everyone here wants the best for them, it's a normal thing if you care for someone
it's just... without all these little things it wouldn't be them anymore
personally I like Phil´s (not so) crooked teeth.
