So I'm not EXACTLY sure how many people might care about this but since the topic "Would Dan and Phil's carreers suffer from coming out, money wise?" comes up a lot, and I've discussed it a bunch with mostly non-deep-in-phandom people, I thought I might just sum it up and do a long post on here if someone is interested.

Just to make it a bit more than speculation with no foundation: I work in Marketing and I have a BA in Media and Communication, and I think about these things way too much for my own good.

First of all, let's ask what makes them get those sweet money? Would losing a bunch of subscribers in the event of a coming out affect them? Would being labelled as LGBTQ+ be a bad thing for their channels?

In the grand scheme of things, really, not. Not at the point they're now. Even if they did lose a bunch of followers because of a coming out, that wouldn't affect ad revenue, since subscribers don't really influence advertising. Likely, the people that would choose to unsubscribe from Deppy are casual viewers and people that don't really care for them as creators, which probably means that they don't engage with the ads (either through adblock or skipping them altogether). So, from them, Deppy are not getting revenue. Likely, they're probably not buying merch, or going to see them at conventions, or buying their books - all things that give them more money than advertising itself.

All things considered, if they DID come out as a couple, their popularity on youtube would likely increase. This is a trend that has been seen before on other youtube channels whose creators have come out - the videos go viral, and they experience an increase in views and followers. One thing that comes to my mind is, for example, when Zoe and Alfie were "exposed": they both experienced an increase in popularity, because people wanted to see more of them as a couple. I can admit it's why I subscribed to Alfie's vlogging channel, I found them cute and wanted to see some domestic. Granted, for a LGBT couple it would also get some backslash, but in the youtube corner, it probably wouldn't be that bad. It's more likely that Deppy would get sh*t for denying it for so long, but the positivity from the fandom would be way bigger.

The big question would be what happens outside youtube? How would that affect other opportunities in, let's say, traditional media? That's not something that can really be predicted, because it depends on what those opportunities would be. They wouldn't have a problem being called at conventions, they would still get publishing deals if they wanted to make another book. They do not relate on a third party for their merchandising, which gives them a solid return of cash that they manage themselves. Considering the popularity they have, the rumors ongoing for years, they could likely film a documentary or two about their own story and that wouldn't have a problem being produced.

With the kind of fame and money they have, and the kind of independent creative work that they made for themselves, I doubt very much would change, unless they wanted to, let's say, try out for a blockbuster movie. And the reason they wouldn't get casted is probably because they're not the best actors.

And they would probably get hateful comments and people talking about their sexualities and intimacy more than they already do. But their community, which is really their target audience, wouldn't really change that much - more annoying, sure. But, I can say quite surely, way more engaging. I'm pretty sure they would get even more money on YouNow, because more people would buy bars to give them in the hope to catch some domestic moment during their liveshows.

So on a marketing/economic/whatever this way level, on youtube as a platform and outside of it in the real of what they already do, it wouldn't change much. The only unpredictable thing that could happen is brand/companies wouldn't want to work with them. But what brand? They already have very few sponsored content, and it's clear they select the companies they want to work with. And these companies approach them because they know their audience is right with the company's target. They know their audience is mostly young viewers who believe they are together. And that hasn't affected them before, I doubt it would now.

I think the reason for not wanting to be official on youtube is to keep their privacy more than a business security. On the other hand, though, there's also the big risk that, if someone had to happen between them, their brand would be way more damaged than, say, them deciding to focus on different solo content in a couple of years as a consequence of naturally growing apart. An eventual break up, made "public" by the internet knowing about them in the first place, could be harsh on how their audience itself see their content.

(the idea of considering the possibility of a breakup is sad, but that's something to consider when you work with someone you're dating, whoops)

I'm pretty sure there are other things I wanted to say and I'm not sure I made as much sense as I wanted. I need to stop posting on here when it's past 3am.

I'm catching up (still a few pages left) but I want to comment on Phil's video. Is it wrong that I feel kind of bad about it? It's almost certain that it was staged, and I don't mind about staged videos (because almost 100% of youtubers' content is staged, and that's totally fine) but when something is shown as non-planned and spontaneous, when in fact it's the total opposite, it's... manipulative? for a lack of a better word (i'm sorry i'm not saying that phil is a manipulative person but english is not my native language and I can't think of a better word). I just feel bad, like being lied to. Maybe it's because I'm in other fandoms were people I stan lie to their fans A LOT and I'm just kind of tired of it.
However, if he staged this video to show us that he doesn't sleep with Dan and all that stuff, I totally understand it. Privacy seems important to them and I respect that.

But, on the bright side, I enjoyed some parts of the video, like the candy haul and he showing us the gaming room!

Thanks bookfiend I eventually figured that out and felt silly for including it. It is a nice sound effect that fits well. I was more distracted by the Sherlock theme.

The husband watched it with me last night and found it amusing (so now that vid should have five full views from me with no ad skipping. You're welcome boys). Then I decided to show him The Photobooth Challenge. I had been avoiding sharing that one as it is the stuff of nightmares for me, but Phil really likes it and it's mentioned in TABINOF so I figured why not. So much cringing. I then played Dan's Disstrack that he had previously overheard before he had a good sense of Dan. His only reaction was "why did he dub it?"

Then he asked about the Internet Support Group. We made it through 4 until he started to fall asleep. Though he was happy to see recognizable Dan at this point (I forget how he puts it but it's funny. He's uncomfortable with young Dan pre-2014). I also think this is the point that Dan starts taking the series seriously. Though I when I noticed that Stephen/22/Dublin was the only one Dan gave proper time in the first one. He slows down the scrolling text and zooms in, giving a full heartfelt answer, because "us guys on the internet are here for each other and we understand". Stephen/21/Cambridge in the second also gets some relatability, but it's Sam/18/Nottingham that shows the heart of Dan here.

I might be one of the only one that isn't blown away by the old photo. Sure there is some resemblance in the eyes, but I don't think it's uncanny and I do think it's a genuine portrait. I guess I'm just used to seeing old portraits and they all start to have a familar feel to them. Though there are a few photos of my grandmother who passed away before my siblings and I were born where she either looks exactly like my sister or my aunt. I gifted one of the photos in a nice frame to my sister and she nearly freaked out saying "How is that hat on my head?"

I'm wondering if maybe, just maybe, they've reprised some role with the BBC (maybe BBC 3 as that's now online only) and have produced something for them? My only issue with this is that it would have to have been scheduled in advanced so if you knew where to look there might be a trace of it

The current LGBT+ programming season is because of the celebrations for 50 years of decriminalisation in the UK. Programming has been announced in April (at least for the BBC), so I do think if it was something for that, D&P would've mentioned it at some point, considering it's all airing right now & the official date of celebrations was the 27th of July. I suppose they might still pop up in a documentary, but that probably wouldn't take several months of filming for them.

I love how Phil says 'hide the dead plants' instead of 'throw away'. Is that what their massive amount of storage is for then? Dead plant cemetery. (jk I hope they're all having a great time with the lester family)

Personally, I would love for a secret project to turn out to be about them doing the new 100 days like John Green did at the beginning of the year. They're in such a perfect position to take over that channel, considering their constant image of 'lol let's never go outside' and 'what even are sports', a turn-around of that for their health would be amazing especially with their influence on a younger audience. That, or a podcast. Maybe something serialised instead of just weekly bants. But I guess all of that is just wishful thinking.
