Dan & Phil Part 52: And They Were Roommates

I saw someone mentioning on Tumblr that the fact that Phil didn't tweet yesterday meant that he was really upset about the Dream Daddy video "backlash". Along with hundreds of comments about how we will be lucky if they EVER make another video and how now they are going to be afraid to be sincere in their videos.

Is there any truth to the amount of tweeting they do and their mood? What do you think? Personally, I think that's ridiculous, but I haven't been in the phandom that long, so...

The phandom likes to be overdramatic with these things. Though, Phil didn't tweet at all the day after he put out the sleepless night video (I just checked and saw nothing from July 31st), but that could possibly be be explained with his parents coming into town the next day. He probably didn't tweet yesterday as dan said something about having "a long day" so maybe that involved both of them and when Phil was going to tweet, he saw the stuff in his mentions about what had happened or whatever and chose not to tweet as it wouldn't have looked appropriate to tweet about something random and not about what happened.
This is all just speculation/my opinion though. Also, some the phandom on Tumblr is being highly extra with they're attitude about this and quite frankly, I wish I could unread half of the comments I've read about clearing up the situation. seriously can they stop babying two adults who actually took action with something that was legitimately upsetting and bothering many people?!

Is it pointless to hope for a video today? I'm not even sure what video I'd like, in a perfect world I'd love a gaming video so that I can see both of them together and die over domestic banters but it's been basically two weeks since Dan's last video and I think he said something about being due one soon?

In a perfect world we'd get a video featuring both of them while they go in details over that week in March and announce their convention, but only after they return from their honeymoon where they're going to pick up their new dog.

people were super upset about the book announcement and felt really mislead. people felt the trailer was ingenuine, it was during a time of some hatred towards YouTuber Books™ , there was talk of selling out, some hurt over the potential solidification of the "best friends and roommates" branding, people saying they were tired of the lads never uploading anyway and this was the last straw, etc.
although in hindsight, it was the event that really breathed new life into GG (at that time) and the eventual creation of IDB

I wasn't around for that, but looking back at the gaming channel it seems like they didn't upload a gaming video between Dec 25 2014 and Jan 20 2015, after up to that point uploading a couple times a week. So... I can see why people were already primed to be confused and upset.

I agree. I understand that a lot of their fanbase is in their tweens, but really...
Phil is 30. He stopped being innocent ~20 years ago, unless he was a sheltered child living in fairyland. I hate when people try and make him look like a little kid. He may play things down for his audience and keep things PG, but I am convinced that while he is most definitely a polite person, he understands all the jokes just as well as any other human being his age. He's just not rude, brash or loud, but definitely not clueless.

Phil is 30. He stopped being innocent ~20 years ago, unless he was a sheltered child living in fairyland. I hate when people try and make him look like a little kid. He may play things down for his audience and keep things PG, but I am convinced that while he is most definitely a polite person, he understands all the jokes just as well as any other human being his age. He's just not rude, brash or loud, but definitely not clueless.

This made me imagine Phil on the tube, trying to mug someone, and he's all like 'listen here u lil shit.' I'm here for dark, adult phil, who makes sex jokes and then goes home to his loving wife, Janice.

Real talk though, Phil's videos give off the impression that he's "an innocent angel bean that must be protected" because he wants his videos to be more family friendly. But in the end, he is an adult man with a job. This is giving me flashbacks of the flight thing, and how it really sort of was Phil's fault, but because, once again, he is an innocent angel bean, we must not blame him.

This whole day has just made me remember once again that dan and phil aren't always the ones being problematic, it's just certain fans. People can make anything problematic if they want to.

"But it's appreciation! We know they really love Japan!" Eh no we don't. We just assume. They have never said anything about language, history or culture. We know they love anime and aesthetics and that's about it. And that's fine, you can like and appreciate those things and that's not wrong or problematic. Reblogging some aesthetic pic with a quote in kanji from your fave manga on Tumblr seems fine to me (and I do it all the time oops). But making money from this shallow and somewhat fetishist understanding of Japanese culture is just so different. That's not appreciation anymore. D&P and IRL Digital are not big corporate powerhouses but they are a business. Thinking that they just wanna share the love for a culture is incredibly naive imo.

Agreed. I seriously am so tired of these responses. It's so cringey to even read. They do realise he is literally a 30 year old man? He's not a little boy. I know his channel is family friendly but the probability is he's not like that off of camera at all. He is a man. I do wonder how he feels about being called 'innocent' and an 'angel bean' and whatever, if he just takes it because fans have normalised the phrases or if he hates it.

This is amazing and probably true. and kind of weird to think about. but amazing

And maybe Phil is a little bit more innocent compared to Dan, but he is not innocent. I'm pretty sure he understands these kind of jokes. Just because he can control his mouth doesn't mean he is innocent, I've had plenty of friends who are polite and don't swear as much, but they have the dirtiest minds. And he is a 30 years old man.

And I don't know if Phil is bothered by everyone calling him 'innocent smol bean' all the time, I guess it has become part of his branding, like Dan talking about dying all the time. I'm sure they don't act like that all the time, and hopefully, most of the phandom knows this.

I see their Japan merch as a memorial to a special point in their lives, ie marriage or engagement or whatever I don't see it as any sort of appropriation. Some of the folks on Tumblr? I don't think they know actual cultural appropriation if it bit them in the butt.

SUPPOSED RACISM:
When I watched the Daddy video and got to "that" scene, I told myself someone was going to lose their shit over what Dan said, but I didn't take it as a big deal. Needless to say, when I got over to Tumblr I wasn't shocked by the shitstorm I came across.

Arguments supporting the racism I could not take at face value because so many of the posters were using words I don't think they actually knew the meaning of. As well, some posts came across as if the poster was simply getting on the racism bandwagon because everyone else was doing it.

Granted, there is a bit of a stigma of the UK as they were once one of the biggest colonizing empire in the world, with certain areas (Middle East) still recovering from the upheavals caused by WWI and II. Not that the US are angels: we dropped two nuclear bombs on them and threw Japanese-Americans into containment camps because of the "Yellow Threat". If anyone sucks, we do.

Cultural appropriation, to me, is not using a certain language on merch. Would the conversation be the same if they used French or Italian?
Women dressing up as Native Americans for Halloween, that appropriation. White folks using black face? Appropriation as well as just plain racism. Building a wall between the US and Mexico, while eating a taco salad? Jesus Peaches I can't even with that...

Bottom line for the entire thing: Dip and Dot come across as totally harmless who would never say or do anything to upset or offend anyone consciously.
