Every time I see that Dangirl vs Phillion I think: Can't I just be a Dandelion? There is no way I can ever choose! Is there an official name for being 50/50?
That Jam and Bill video was great, I had so much fun watching all of them. Thanks twix

You don't need to choose! In my opinion, even prefering one of them isn't ultimately about picking sides at this point since they are so clearly a unit. I have a hard time imagining someone being a fan of one of them and hating the other, even though those people probably exist.Whommel wrote:Every time I see that Dangirl vs Phillion I think: Can't I just be a Dandelion? Hmm, I don't know. If I'm being shown around by 2 friends who are, or might be, living in a glass closet, I don't think I would do something like that. It could be seen as "outing" them.capybantsa wrote:I don't know if he really did it but that seems like something Duncan would do lol
On the other hand, if I know they aren't living in a glass closet and are just two #platonicbros, I don't think I would do it either given their phandom's obsessive shipping. Even if they seemed "ok" with it now.
Maybe I'm just projecting -- I would not do that unless my friends were public about their relationship. But then again, I'm old school . . .

Unless neither of them are aware of the shipping..? (unlikely) Or they didn't have the tact to think about how their actions may be interpreted? Anyway, wasn't Mimei found to have liked a lot of phan art on her tumblr? (she didn't realize her likes were public)karma_yeah wrote:Hmm, I don't know. Any thing is possible, but I don't know how they could not be aware of the shipping, especially if Mimei has "liked" phan art.000dia000 wrote:Unless neither of them are aware of the shipping..? Maybe they lack tact, but they're around 30 years old, so I'm assuming some level of maturity, and -- I'm projecting again --, but I think of as being somewhat selective in who they spend time with. But agreed, anything is possible.

Like I said in my previous post, I like the guy but Duncan is not exactly your epitome of tact and sensitivity. I doubt it was meant as outing anyone but more of a 'lol fanservice' thing.. either way if that happened he really should not.karma_yeah wrote:Any thing is possible, but I don't know how they could not be aware of the shipping, especially if Mimei has "liked" phan art.000dia000 wrote:Unless neither of them are aware of the shipping..? I don't really see how anyone could consider this as "outing". If it really happened it sounds like a joke and no worse than, say, when Tyler said he ships phan.karma_yeah wrote: Hmm, I don't know. As for liking phanart, Anthony liked a "jealous Phil" phanart on Twitter some time ago, and he is presumably a good friend of theirs.

[offtopic]You're thinking from an American (I'm guessing) context though, where the dominant culture is white. Not saying you're wrong, as you certainly aren't from an American standpoint in terms of institutional racism, but in non-white cultures that will not be true.onetruetrash wrote:[offtopic]I know, I mean that I haven't heard of racism against white people being the same kind of intense racism that people of color do in the US.[/offtopic]capybantsa wrote:[offtopic]onetruetrash wrote:Also, I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but last time this was discussed, people who were Asian were saying that they've experienced racism when they use their own language, but white people get to use it to make money off of. And there are other types of racism other than simply institutional racism - like I don't think I've experienced institutional racism ever in the UK but i've definitely experienced other types of racism as a white person. And there are areas I am scared to go alone as a white person, particularly as a young (I'm 22 but look 16 apparently ) queer white female purely based on the intersections of my gender, my race, and my sexuality.[/offtopic]

D&P stayed friends with Felix and Tyler even though they made shipping jokes about them. It seems like they probably don't care about shipping jokes that much.

You seem to be judging the rest of the world by American standards. The world is not America. That's actually a major stereotype for Americans in Japan, "they think the world is America".
There are places where white people are killed for being white. There are places where white people are rewarded for being white. The world is a wide place with many different situations.[/offtopic]

Kind of sorry deppy didn't win bc maybe there would have been a prerecorded acceptance. How is the winner chosen? Is it voted on by SITC attendees or a panel? Wouldn't blame them for not choosing deppy since we don't know their reason for not attending. They won in 2015 even though they didn't attend due to the tour (which they probably could have scheduled around SITC if they wanted).flarequake wrote:
Deps didn't win the SITC award for book of the year for DAPGO, btw (thank goodness, I didn't think it deserved to compared to the other books nominated). Hannah Witton won for Doing It.

If that thing with Duncan really happened (I doubt it), I bet he was doing it sarcastically, like saying "This is what you want to see, right?" I can see him do that, like Catallena said, he isn't the most tactful person, but I don’t think he actually did.

On a personal level getting bullied in school in China because your mother is white is horrible and it just shouldn't happen. But the reasons racism against white people exists in places like China or Japan are different from the reasons it exists in the Western world. Like, racism against white people in East Asia mostly stems from the shit white people pulled over there during the colonial era whilst racism against people of colour in Europe and America developed because majorities wanted to keep minorities down. This is not an excuse for any kind of discrimination but I think it's something we need to keep in mind when we're discussing stuff like this. Also let's not forget that white people aren't the only people that could face racism in East Asia. China has a big problem with racism against black people for instance, against the Japanese (mostly to do with the Japanese war crimes as someone else has already pointed out) and against other ethnicities too. Non-white people are absolutely capable of being racist (even though Tumblr likes to pretend they're not) and it's an issue.[/offtopic]

I know this half-white and half-Chinese girl who used to go to school in China and she said she did get bullied by her classmates for looking white. That's horrible but I think the big difference is that whiteness is a privilege almost all around the world thanks to imperialism and colonialisation and that even though racism and xenophobia against white people can totally be a thing in non-white countries, it's not institutional like racism against people of colour in white western countries is. I have a very hard time putting this into words right now but I hope it makes sense. Like: Yes, other countries aren't discrimination free paradises at all but the difference is, once more, historical context. Given Japan's history with America or China's history with the British or the French it kind of makes sense they don't see white people in a very good light. I'm not trying to excuse any form of discrimination. Modern day white people aren't to blame for what their ancestors did (even though we still benefit from it, let's be real) and they shouldn't be subjected to discrimination based on being white but as always there's context.onetruetrash wrote:Also, I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but last time this was discussed, people who were Asian were saying that they've experienced racism when they use their own language, but white people get to use it to make money off of. Just popping in to say i had the weirdest dream last night where D&P decorated my bedroom purple and we all fell asleep (platonically) in my bed I had just got back from a festival though, so my brain was so over tired...
Anyway, super happy they acknowledged the DD monolid issue, i wasn't actually aware that youtube could take parts of a video out if requested. Also very interesting reading about how everyone feels about the japan text, its great to get so many differing opinions from around the world, you guys teach me everyday

Totally agree. Duncan's a huge troll. If it happened then it was probably a "lol shippers" thing. I hope people don't get mad at him though, he's just messing around, it's what he does. He likes pissing people off but unlike his Japanese Youtube stuff this was probably pretty good natured - if it even happened at all, which is questionable.Katka wrote:If that thing with Duncan really happened (I doubt it), I bet he was doing it sarcastically, like saying "This is what you want to see, right?" (Off-topic but did anyone here get to meet Duncan and Mimei? I hope they had a good time in London but from the sounds of their twitter their SITC meet and greet was a gd mess. Really glad I didn't end up going.)
nope.
I'm not up to date with all the theories regarding what they're up to at the moment, but I'm starting to get real curious now. Are they organizing a youtube meet/festival thing? New book? New channel? Launching a company where they sponsor or manage or whatever other Youtubers? Belated Europe TATINOF? Moving to the remote island they bought to retire with three corgis??
