One of the survey results I was most curious about just went up. I typed the answers out to be able to do a direct percentage comparison to each response.
2015 vs 2017: Do you ship phan?
So basically... less people ship them, but also less people don't ship them. The middle ground of 'partially' is what got bigger in 2017 compared to 2015. I wonder if that's just the normalizing effect paying off for them?

I think as the years go on, more 'proof' and theories can be collected and believed but we also have to remember that's more years of Dan and Phil still not coming out. It makes people lose interest and not know what to think, if there's still all this speculation but no give.
[offtopic]Not sure if anyone cares to hear but there's been an accusation by a fan's mother that Dan (and/or Phil?) have sent her horrible messages. Obviously, this is a catfish but her account is now on private and she's contacted the met police. Just thought I'd share because having false police reports against you is really harrowing and I wonder whether, if it goes through or not, they or any other YouTubers would comment on it? I know Emma Blackery has as she was the one to tell a fan to contact the police.

As I'm studying for my last exam ever, which happens to be applied statistics, I can't help but wonder how we're comparing the numbers here? Cause I remember waaaay less people took the survey in 2015, which would easily explain the higher percentage.alittledizzy wrote:One of the survey results I was most curious about just went up. Actually, more people took it in 2015 than 2017. But I know nothing about numbers, all I did was take the percentages from the post from 2015 and the ones from the post from 2017. There'll be someone who actually knows what they're doing making proper correlations. (Though if the percentages listed are just the percent of people taking the survey who felt that way each individual year, why would number of people who took it matter?)

I only saw Duncan and Mimei meeting people from a few lanes over and that point it was fine, but from Twitter looks like it ran over time and they had to rush through some people. That's never good. There are a few others who like to talk so they let their meetups run longer, it's fairly rare for them to have to speed it up, but last year they did that a little with Jon Cozart's cos he had to be onstage at 6pm. They didn't speed it up terribly, though, you still had time to say something. Generally it was a really well-organised and chilled event all weekend.

On a lighter note, I believe that when I took the survey I was one of the people that said I didn't ship them, but I do think they're together. At the time, I didn't really ship them them in a traditional sense (didn't read fic or look at fanart or things like that) but that's changed in the meantime still, I'm interested in how these survey results compare against the queerbaiting theory, because so far it looks like a good chunk of fans aren't interested in phan? I'm waiting until all the data is out to do more of an analysis though!

Well if 2000 out of 3000 people said "i ship it" in 2017 and the same number said "i ship it" but more people took the survey in 2015 the percentage is obviously different, even if in numbers the same quantity ships it.... but maybe this is why i'm having so much trouble with this subject don't mind me at this point lmao
I'd be interested to see the results of only people that took it both in 2015 and 2017, see if their opinions changed.
In other news, I'm in need of a new video. I know I said that yesterday, but I still do. I guess it's more probable we'll get it tomorrow if Dan is skipping his ls

[offtopic]What......the fuck..........I'm sorry but how sick do you have to be to do this sort of thing. Jesus Christ, how disturbing. Why would you do this? What do you get out of it??? I don't understand. Maybe it's a really young "fan" (like 13 or something) who just doesn't understand the gravity of what they're doing? But god, I'm 27 and just thinking about someone doing this in my name is making me want to pour bleach all over my skin. It's fucking disgusting.
This person's caused so much hurt to the mum as well - how terrifying it must be to get some messages like these. I don't have kids but if they got messages like these I'd be locking them up and taking away their phones/tablets right away. All the youtube scandals just make this seem more believable.
God, the person who did this is a real piece of shit. I hope it all gets sorted out and Dan doesn't feel too upset and disturbed about it (if I were in his shoes I would be really upset, I think that's inevitable but I hope he doesn't take it to heart too much). He's a sensitive guy and seems to sometimes struggle with the bonkers reality that is being a professional youtuber, I hope this doesn't make him feel like he's doing something wrong. He's not. There are just some really twisted sick fucks out there.[/offtopic]
Oh thanks!! That doesn't sound too bad, I guess we'll have to wait and see from the vlog footage (if Mimei was vlogging ofc). I hope they had a good time in the UK but if their meetup was a bit chaotic and their hotel was crappy it doesn't sound like it...that's such a shame, especially seeing as Duncan hasn't been back to the UK for so long. Anyone else feel weirdly responsible when people come to their country? Lol. I just want everyone to have a good time!flarequake wrote:I only saw Duncan and Mimei meeting people from a few lanes over and that point it was fine, but from Twitter looks like it ran over time and they had to rush through some people. This is incredibly disturbing. By the looks of the messages, it seems like the catfisher had been in contact with the girl before messaging the mother. Aside from the whole situation being ick, that must be a terrifying message to receive. I hope the family's doing okay and the police are giving it the attention it deserves.plath wrote:[offtopic]What......the fuck..........I'm sorry but how sick do you have to be to do this sort of thing. I'm not super familiar with police proceedings so maybe someone with more knowledge could answer this, but if the police do follow up, would Dan and Phil get directly involved? I'm not worried about them; it's upsetting, but I'm sure they'd handle it fine. But it does make me wonder if they'd be questioned or have to hand in their electronics or something. Or would that even be necessary? I hope this doesn't come across as overly dramatic - again, I'm not that worried about them aside from how upsetting I'm sure it is for everyone involved - it's just... well, I'm just wondering.
I hate to say it, but I'm honestly surprised cases like this don't pop up more often.
I'm the same way! My hometown is small and has quite a few... eccentric festivals it's known for, and I'm always so sad whenever someone says they didn't enjoy it. okay are you sitting down...I still remember the day the bour (this was a phrase people on gg made up which was a mixture of book/tour) announcement happened like it was yesterday.leaveimreading wrote:EDIT: I'm out of the loop, what happened with the tabinof announcement that made people upset??
Dan and Phil had been quiet all week (I had been on annual leave that week and was miffed they weren't tweeting) and then suddenly one evening Dan just uploaded a video titled '?' No tweet to go with it, no after tweet, nothing. The video was something not in D&Ps style, it was very different and people were quite confused. The video revealed the book and the tour which was put on sale the exact minute the video went up. I remember people - myself included - having so many questions and they stayed silent.
There were a lot of people who said they didn't agree with them doing a book (a lot of people called them sell outs which I don't agree with) and how could they do a tour. A lot of people didn't have the money for the tour tickets as there was no warning about any secret project, suddenly there was this tour and tickets for the m&g were expensive and people didn't have time to ask their parents etc for the money.
I think the reason they got backlash is because of their silence. They dropped this massive thing and it took them over 24 hours to say anything. Dan shows his twitter replies of people being excited in the making of tabinof video; but honestly a large portion of the phandom were angry and confused. It wasn't like them to make this overly produced video announcing something exciting and for them to not say anything. The next video they put out actually explained things so much better and the backlash kinda died down. I'm still convinced they put out the second video because of the anger, Dan looked petrified in it.
I still stand by the fact I think they went about the announcement the wrong way. Later on, when they released extra dates and also announced the tours in the other countries they at least gave notice, and gave people time to save up.

EDIT: more stuff about the catfishing thing
[offtopic]So, I don't want to go into too much detail but a few months back I was targeted by an older woman who'd be recieving anon hate online for various problematic shit she'd done (like writing many, glorifying r*pe fics about an underage boy in a fandom full of underage fans, nice). The hate got pretty intense and lead to doxxing which meant she had to take action but to cover her ass, she decided to frame me as some lesbian lolita jailbait who'd been so distraught that I wasn't in their gc anymore that I was the one who'd somehow doxxed her etc. She filed a police report and my social worker came over - funnily enough, I didn't do a thing as I still thought we were friends, civil. I ended up telling the social worker of all the nasty things the other woman had done, such as being sexually inappropiate to minors and sending her followers after vulnerable ex friends. And that wasn't all of it. TLDR; woman tried to pin a just-legal autistic girl with the anon hate (just delete your ask fm lady) and it ended with the police and social services finding her to be awful and manipulative. Police report went nowhere [/offtopic]
To answer your question, no, Dan wouldn't have to turn over his electronics if the woman filed. They might not even have to question him if they're smart enough - the username of the person sending the messages has been revealed, and so all they have to do is find the IP address/email linked to the account to disprove the account as belonging by him. It's still the worst thing to be falsely accused of stuff though, even though you know you haven't done it the anxiety of people thinking you have is just agonising
The owner of the account claims he is a male teen, also. I wonder if it was predatory as we might assume or in the name of getting money. I heard that he also asked for the poor girl to meet up with him I can't imagine the hurt of the girl after speaking to her favourite YouTuber and having this all shattered in a few minutes, ugh. This is what we really should be concerned about in fandom.
EDIT: Mum knows that it's just an imposter so the panic over Dan being falsely implicated can die down thankfully Hope she gives him hell.

Thanks for the write-up! This was very interesting to read. Have people expressed worry that something similar might happen, considering the current secretiveness that seems to be happening (#thatweek, "long day", irrelevant tweets, LS cancelled,...)?missemma wrote:okay are you sitting down...I still remember the day the bour (this was a phrase people on gg made up which was a mixture of book/tour) announcement happened like it was yesterday.leaveimreading wrote:EDIT: I'm out of the loop, what happened with the tabinof announcement that made people upset??

I think announcements are always tough to handle. You definitely want to ride the hype and surprise, but you can also catch people off-guard. The problem with the phandom specifically that I see is that if D/P ever put out a tweet saying "Important vid/announcement coming tomorrow", people would assume that it would be about coming out and would express anger if it wasn't that. Guess that might be why they never teased about the moving thing, but rather "planted seeds".
Wonder what other seeds have been planted already...
(I am only using that seed metaphor cause it's a Dan quote but I find it odd to talk about planting seeds in the context of relationships)

I honestly don't think they'd do the same thing again. I remember at the time we were waiting for 'Just Dance' to be released as dapg had been relatively quiet. They seem to have a much better upload schedule for the gaming video now plus they are good at dropping hints for stuff. The 'ask me in 5 months' thing is a prime example of that. With the bour, we didn't have any build up at all. There weren't any clues about it, although Dan did say he couldn't get younow to connect for the liveshow that week and then suddenly the bour dropped and they were doing a joint liveshow - a few people accused him of lying just so they could cash in on the profit from the joint show.LtrllySusan wrote: Thanks for the write-up! Just posting briefly to say i almost believe the plushie story with Duncan (here me out!) I met Duncan and Mimei on the second day of Vidcon last year where there weren't many people and we ended up having a really nice few minute conversation. Before more people came and rushed over I was really struck with how awkward Duncan was in real life. I totally saw it as a case of a Youtuber shining online but being sort of reserved in real life, and I ended up talking to Mimei for the most of it. I was the first person to get a free t-shirt from him (he had put on twitter that the first 3 people to come up to him and shout pdr sucks would get one, and he seemed totally surprised but happy I knew about him beyond Dan and Phil) Anyways I could see him being awkward and not knowing what to say potentially and just doing it, but yeah, it does strike a little bit of a
I only talked about how I enjoy their videos and didn't mention Dan and Phil but I could totally see a fan not knowing them much being a weird conversation to navigate. The interaction made me feel bad the day after where they were completely swamped with a huge line of fans, it didn't seem his vibe at all (Mimei could hold a Good conversation though ) but idk proof me wrong. I ended up being in her vlog for a few seconds too so it was worth Duncan barely speaking to me

Tbh I would guess that any decrease in shipping might stem from the fact that people believe they're legitamently together, rather than just the usual "I like the idea that they're together." A few people on Idb have I believe expressed sentiments like this, and I know I sometimes feel weird saying that I ship them, because it feels different than how I have shipped people before?liola wrote:Oh really? I typed the answers out to be able to do a direct percentage comparison to each response.
2015 vs 2017: Do you ship phan?
So basically... less people ship them, but also less people don't ship them. The middle ground of 'partially' is what got bigger in 2017 compared to 2015. I wonder if that's just the normalizing effect paying off for them?
But I know nothing about numbers, all I did was take the percentages from the post from 2015 and the ones from the post from 2017. There'll be someone who actually knows what they're doing making proper correlations. (Though if the percentages listed are just the percent of people taking the survey who felt that way each individual year, why would number of people who took it matter?)![]()
[offtopic]wow the whole cat fishing thing is so sad to think about. I'm glad the mother found out about this, though. (Her daughter was the subject of this incident, right?I don't know the details). Does anyone know any instances where other youtubers have had something like this happen as well?[/offtopic]
(It's interesting to hear all the Duncan interaction stories ! I love his videos, I've always wondered what it wouldn't be like to meet him irl. I guess it's exactly how I imagine )
Not gonna lie, the first thing I thought when I saw the super awkward fan hugs at cons was "that's very appropriate". Maybe I'm old but I picked up immediately that they were making it suuuper professional. It's good tbh. I'm glad to be stanning good guys with clear boundaries and not those other Youtube creeps who prey on young girls.dontpanic wrote:Edit: I would not be surprised about the Duncan story, only because he's awkward person who, while seemingly well intended, is super awkward and thoughtless. We all used to like making dolls kiss and/or fight (only reason to have them lol), i wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have them also play fight. Especially since it's awkward already to have someone bring some other youtubers merch while meeting u. There's nothing to read into here either way, whether Duncan knows the nature of deppy's relationship or not.

I also love hearing the Duncan stories! That's really interesting kinemacolor, I've never imagined him being that way but it makes total sense. I'm glad you had a good chat with Mimei. She seems so lovely, I hope I get to meet her one day. I can definitely see Duncan being so awkward and just messing around with the dolls, if it went down that way then he probably put zero thought into what he was doing other than "lol funny".
nope.

So the % of people who think they are in a relationship went up from 2 years ago (it was 14%).
And the % of people who think they are platonic is almost the same.

I'm actually quite surprised by how many people think they're platonic, I have to say it. Mostly because the survey is anonymous so everyone could indulge into their shipping side without feeling judged.
It's pretty interesting!

Will probably never be over the BONCAS and the beauty of Phil Lester.

The survey actually came out slightly before they moved, and the bulk of people who took the survey did it within the first few days. I wonder if that'll make any difference next year, if any of those people on the fence had their minds made up by the move?liola wrote:I'm actually quite surprised by how many people think they're platonic, I have to say it. that or shippers are just a more visible/ vocal group
The majority still thinks they are/were together.riperoni wrote:people might feel pressure in certain fandom circles to ship them, liola wrote:I'm actually quite surprised by how many people think they're platonic, I have to say it. Catfishing and especially celebrity catfishing sucks. I've known a few guys and girls who got tricked into sexting and some even sent pics or videos. All minors. I think the people responsible never got caught...
Don't send nude pics of yourself to people on the internet! Even if it's a real celebrity! Don't!
Unless you're a consenting adult and you don't mind the idea of those pictures getting leaked and a ton of people seeing them, in which case you do you
