That was a daft video, but funny. That last box was too random, but just the candles might have made it worth what he spent on it. The other boxes were quite good. His hand-flapping at the packet of cotton buds was hilarious, it doesn't take much to freak him out, though I guess he didn't realise at first that they were clean. People will sell some weird sh*t, and buy it too the clutter-clearer in me can't stand the sight of all those random little things, they're too hard to re-home if you don't need them.

This way, when you are cutting with the scissors, the blade you are pushing down is toward the hand that is using it, and is operated by the thumb. At least when you use them in the proper hand. Also the more I think about his parents never buying him any the weirder it is - my ex was a leftie and when she went to uni ALL of her stuff was left handed, I was impressed by how much stuff she actually found.[/offtopic]

The way that last box was taped up would have been a huge red flag for me. It's one thing if you know the mystery box is coming from a business (like when I was little, there was a place in one of the malls here that was kinda like a Claire's Boutique that did mystery bags so it was jewelry, nail polish etc) but these random ass people from who knows where sending who knows what, is really creepy to me.

To be fair, my parents never bought me anything lefthanded, not even scissors, because I could use normal ones perfectly well. If it was the same for Dan why would they bother? I don't think it's weird at all, most lefthanded children can use righthanded stuff just as well as righthanded children. I use scissors with my right hand to this very day for example. I think I would be clumsier using my left hand actually? And since Dan once said he was slightly ambidextrous he probably does quite well with righthanded stuff. (Lefthanded stuff is usually way more expensive than normal stuff which is unacceptable so I guess if a lefthanded kid can use righthanded stuff alright, most parents won't bother getting an expensive alternative.)sparkle wrote:Also the more I think about his parents never buying him any the weirder it is - my ex was a leftie and when she went to uni ALL of her stuff was left handed, I was impressed by how much stuff she actually found.
I loved the video by the way! It was gross but also really fun and the book made me snicker. I used to read those when I was younger, they were really big with young girls in the UK when I was a teen.

[offtopic]I've never bought anything specifically for lefties either, but my right hand is basically useless. I use my left for everything, even righthanded scissors. but my biggest pet peeve is lecture halls with no lefty desks. It's the one thing that's actually incredibly inconvenient to me.[/offtopic]
The video was enjoyable! It reminds me of those cute mystery boxes you can get in stores like Hot Topic that have one random collectible per box. I have a bit of a weakness for those, but the mystery boxes Phil bought seem like a quick and easy way to clutter up the house. I'm tempted to buy one for my friend as a joke birthday gift, though.

i liked the new phil video! it was cute and he got some cool stuff in the boxes. except for the last one, let's not talk about that one o-o the book reminded me of those cliche romance books for like, young teens lol. cute video though! idk if i'd rewatch it but i enjoyed it nonetheless.

That was a fun video! I'm laughing at the fact that it was exactly 10 minutes and 1 second, also his lighting was really flattering and he looked lovely As much as I find the idea of mystery boxes alluring I'd be way too terrified to order any myself, so I'm with Dan in admiring Phil's bravery.
Left-handed solidarity: I'm with you katka, my parents never bought me left-handed scissors because I got by pretty well with right-handed ones - using scissors is actually the only function my right hand isn't completely useless at doing. I think many left-handed people just end up teaching themselves to use the right-handed scissors.
Also droopy oh my god tell me about it!! The lack of leftie desks in lecture theatres is the bane of my existence smh, such a hard life. Dan's video about being left-handed is the most relatable content he's ever made tbh

The video was so simple but I laughed so much. Especially that last box, my god. Phil flailing from the grossness is something I didn't know I need in my life. Why would anyone send some of that stuff???
I wonder now if anyone ever actually buys the millionaire mystery boxes? Is that a thing for people who have more money than they know what to do with, buying surprise boxes off ebay?

I didn't even know this was a thing! It was really funny, specially when he showed the last box. Omg, what even was that thing. So full of crap, and so gross. I hope he really washed his bedsheets after that.
The other boxes were fine, I liked that one of them even had a book! Now I'm intrigued and I'll probably watch more of this type of videos (Phil, pls, make another one in the future).

I'm back from a week long trip! I wanna get into the habit of posting here often since I always end up really happy when I get replies and get to read everyone's opinions.
I liked the video it was a really sweet way to start my day, but the minute I saw ebay in the title I was immediately concerned. There's just something about ebay that just screams BAD IDEA to me, and the last box only makes me more uneasy about the site. Also, is it just me, but even though AP videos are fairly long I always feel like they are super short? Like one second I'm hearing him introduce the video and then the next second it's over, while a dapg video feels like forever sometimes.
I'M VERY UPSET I MISSED THE LAST DISCUSSION IT'S SUCH A GOOD TOPIC so I'll give my input now. Literally everyone already said everything I was thinking of and I wish a could quote all of you since i share like 80% of all your opinions. Although for cringe I never saw anyone mention that one clip from a louise vlog when she asks Dan why he can't vlog at parties. gOD I can't watch that clip. And when Dan says "no,,, I wasn't gonna say...." my whole body just screams.

I'd just like to thank the people concerned/worrying/freaking out about the dirty sticky stuff on the duvet cover for making me laugh brightening my morning.
After all, it's not like he sleeps there...
Yup, that's pretty much my takeaway from the vid. That and rolling my eyes at the "£8 is a lot of money" comment...

This is actually a thing I really appreciate about Dan and Phil. I think it's nice how, despite the fact that they're clearly ridiculously rich and don't have to worry about spending 15 quid on mystery boxes for a video, they both tend to discuss money in a way that shows they understand the value of it and that not everyone has the same financial means as them. I'm not saying they're perfect about it, and they certainly buy expensive stuff all the time, but when they make comments about something being expensive, it's usually something I myself would also thing is outside of my price range. Whether that's leftover attitudes from when they weren't as well off, or if it's a conscious way for them to remain relatable, i don't know, but I kind of like that. I've seen other youtubers be quite wasteful and excessive in how they discuss/spend money for pranks and videos, and it's always left me feeling a bit put off.IckleMissMayhem wrote: Yup, that's pretty much my takeaway from the vid. Also, sorry to IckleMissMayhem if quoting you makes it seem like I'm criticising your comment, that's definitely not my intention! I completely agree that this isn't a big sum of money for Phil to spend, but I just wanted a chance to discuss the way they speak about money and your comment reminded me

To be fair, even though he can afford to waste it, £8 is a lot of money to spend on something when you literally don't know what you're getting! I appreciate Phil staying true to his frugal roots despite probably being a millionaire by now! It's a lot more relatable to watch him complain he didn't get his £8 worth than it is to see beauty gurus casually using a £36 lipstick like it's no big deal!IckleMissMayhem wrote:I'd just like to thank the people concerned/worrying/freaking out about the dirty sticky stuff on the duvet cover for making me laugh brightening my morning.

I'm not coming for you by the way I know it was a throwaway comment! I have just always appreciated Phil's refreshing attitude towards money. I also think Dan has a pretty good attitude to money too despite dropping a lot of cash on designer clothes which I think is fair enough if it's what he likes to spend it on and can afford it. But it's obvious neither of them live a super-lavish lifestyle and although their flat is very nice and probably way out of most of our budgets, depending on where in London it is, I wouldn't imagine it's at the top end of their budget either. It seems obvious to me that the boys know YT won't last forever and are being smart with their cash to make sure it lasts after their careers start to wind down or go into the next phase. I also think this is why they haven't bought a house(s) yet and I don't expect they will in the near future (or if they do I expect it will be relatively modest).
I really cringe when I think about Zoe and Alfie, mortgaged up to the eyeballs in their new mansion, struggling to pay for everything when they're not regularly getting 1M+ views anymore, and it's nice to think D&P will never have to do that.
EDIT: idkwhattowrite said it way better than me haha.
No offence taken, don't worry!
Yes, no-one should buy dodgy stuff like that from ebay/similar - but (perhaps wrongly) I'd have thought that anyone old enough to have a credit/debit card and be able to pay for stuff online would be old enough to judge for themselves what is/isn't a good use of money. (I've bought mystery items off Groupon twice now - once I kept the item, once I sold it (on eBay, and for more money than I paid. )
My rolling eyes at Phil partly comes from the constant "oh, I have such a young audience" schtick (Don't get me started on censoring out his one slip in the CB vid, when Dan'd been effing and blinding throughout) mixed with he's spent roughly the same amount on all three boxes together as you would on a takeaway pizza - but for him it's money invested for a very high return, not at all wasted.

hi! I've been ia for the past few days but now i'm almost caught up with the 10 pages i missed. I have, however, been having a LOT of deppy related conversations with a friend, and some thoughts were sparked that I felt like would be interesting to share on here and get some opinions
So one thing that my friend brought up was that she doesn't enjoy Phil's main channel content anymore and that if she came across one of his videos today, not being aware of phan, or even dan, not even the gaming channel, she wouldn't be interested in him. I didn't really get this at first, but the more i thought about it, the more I realized how much it applies to me as well. This made me think of a few things that I'd actually really like to hear you guys' opinions on: How many of you enjoy Dan and Phil's main channel videos, regardless of their ship? Would you still be as excited about everything if the gaming channel wasn't a thing and they rarely made videos together? And if people just believed they were best friends, with no romantic elements involved, and less theories, would you be as invested in the Phandom and their videos?
-(kinda irrelevant here, but violet-writer's post a few pages ago made me think about this) How long do you guys think Dan and Phil will stay relevant? My personal opinion is that their career has been at it's peak since 2014, but if they stay at the same rate they've been at for the past few months, they're going to go down soon. Unless, of course, there's another tour or book, or *the documentary.* Phil's never come off to me as the kind of person who values his content based on how many views it gets. He seems to just make his videos as he pleases, but i don't think that's the same case for dan.
This whole post is basically a gateway for opinions and a discussion tbh because I'm really interested in knowing what you all think about all this, so feel free to agree and disagree
-and finally, a VERY plausible theory for that week in march. Get ready to cancel all the moving talk: Phil got a girl preggo, and that's why Dan is stalling telling us, trine get to 9 months, and was all like 'you may or may not find out,' and it also explains his reaction the first time he mentioned it. And it's why the Lester's were in London. They were all there for an ultrasound appointment. Phil seemed off in the DD video because he was realizing what his life will be like in 15 years when his child is a teenager. Dan did a live show in his room because Phil was buys putting together a crib, and the crib is now on the other side of Phil's set, which is why he won't show it to us. We're also not getting an apartment tour because they're getting the baby room ready. Dan's really going to have to work on not screaming if they're going to have a baby in the house though

Dan and Phil are only as successful as they are because of Dan and Phil. It isn't really even an opinion at this point, it is a fact. In all honesty, if they hadn't met Phil would probably have stopped making videos by now and Dan wouldn't have even started. If they had met but they weren't as close now, I reckon Dan would still have a few million maybe and Phil would maybe have around a million.leaveimreading wrote:How many of you enjoy Dan and Phil's main channel videos, regardless of their ship? If they still made videos together and had the gaming channel but people believed their relationship was purely platonic they would still have a similar amount of subscribers, maybe a bit less, because in the end it is there friendship that attracts people to them. BUT they would not have as active a fanbase, this sites like this probably wouldn't exist and their views would be lower. Even though they have less subscribers then some, they have one of the most active fanbases and I think that stems from the closeness of their relationship and how invested (often overly invested) phans are in their lives.
That wasn't a very good summary but nevertheless it was a summary of my thoughts

i was just coming to talk about how much i loved phil's new video lol. for me one of my favorite things phil's said was "this is my channel there's no integrity here" because i get it and respect it. it allows him much more freedom. my main priority as a viewer is to be able to just sit and chill for 10 mins and easily consume something light and funny. phil does just that haha. so yeah i enjoy phil despite whatever i believe is true between the two of them. but i'm also trash for videos of them together. it's a good balance.leaveimreading wrote:hi! I think if Dan and Phil hadn't met, Phil would basically be Jimmy right now - a youtube dinosaur with a smallish channel (Jimmy has about 100k subs) still making videos because he likes making videos, but with an actual career that isn't youtube.archived wrote:Dan and Phil are only as successful as they are because of Dan and Phil. Personally, I'm one of those rare people (apparently) that isn't here for the ship to begin with. I watch their videos with the assumption that they are best friends with no romantic elements involved, because that's what they want us to believe and that's what they portray. However, that friendship? actual goals right there. I'm so here for their chemistry and I love seeing how comfortable they are around each other and how they poke fun at each other and then laugh it all off. For me it doesn't matter whether this is a romantic relationship or not, it doesn't matter what I believe or what anyone else believes. Their relationship is one of those very rare, very deep ones that only a lucky few get in this world, and I'm thankful they share it with the world in this way (and also jealous because I'm terrible with friendships and I'll never have anything like this, so I guess I'm kinda living through them as well?)leaveimreading wrote: How many of you enjoy Dan and Phil's main channel videos, regardless of their ship? I'm fairly certain I'd still watch them if the gaming channel didn't exist, although I do think dapg is a very, VERY good addition to their nook of the internet and I'm very glad they made the decision to start it. But I was around before the gaming channel existed and I enjoy their solo content (especially Dan's) enough as well. But like others have said, I'm also trash for videos with both of them. They're just really funny together and I love it.

Dan maybe not so much, but then I don’t even watch all his videos now. Though I do always watch his live shows, which can be great.
I don’t think I ever understand it when people think that Dan and Phil’s channels are slowly dying. I mean Phil’s newest video is already at 800K and will probably hit 1 million views soon, his previous vid hit 1 million in like 24 hours. I don’t think he is doing too bad at all.
Dan’s vids are still getting tons of views and their gaming channel is doing great, so I can’t say that I’m worried about them fading anytime soon.
I think that if they had never met or their friendship never really became a thing they wouldn’t be as popular as they are now, or maybe they wouldn’t even be on YouTube still. It’s hard to say.

It isn't really even an opinion at this point, it is a fact. In all honesty, if they hadn't met Phil would probably have stopped making videos by now and Dan wouldn't have even started. If they had met but they weren't as close now, I reckon Dan would still have a few million maybe and Phil would maybe have around a million.
I agree, and he was already pretty successful without Dan and got invited to do the radio presenting by himself originally, so I could see Phil still doing radio presenting & working his way up the BBC ladder or joining another smaller production company as a main career, while making videos on the side, because he likes it.
But Dan was a natural at presenting his personality from the beginning so I'm sure he would have started making videos at some point and gotten popular, just a little more slowly. Or maybe he'd have given up once he got to uni. I like to imagine he and Phil meeting like in AgingPhangirls's AU.
