for example about the potato sack jumper -- i don't really see anything original floating around except for people having divided opinions on it? or for "danger men at work", i saw it adapted to memes (e.g. the "psychic reads my mind") one, but not actually any new ones related to it? or for dan's missing legs, there definitely were some memes, but i feel like most of them followed the same pattern as dan's missing eyebrow, so at the moment i can't really imagine how this would be funny.
the science of memes. jokes aside, though, it's a long list and it'll be a top 10, so i suppose we can rest assured that he'll choose which ones to include depending on what actually gets sent in. let's just hope for the best. I never understood what memes are. Internet jokes? When does a joke turn into a meme? I am confused. So I don't know if the things are actually memes or not. And I honestly don't care. I just want a funny video. The one last year was pretty funny, I believe in Dan's ability to make this one funny again I look forward to itlurker wrote:i feel the same way. maybe memes just aren't what they used to be anymoreRaspberrypi wrote:The list is certainly a lot longer than I thought it would be but I feel like only a couple of them were made into memes and the rest of the list...are just things that happened? As I understand it, meme are like big inside jokes that are passed around and declined so many times they look really detached from their origin and non-sensical and that makes it even funniernephilimcat wrote:I never understood what memes are. I was talking to my Mum about the gas leak and she said they would of got very ill if they really had a leak for 4 years. I'm not sure what to think. I mean saying a year would of been more believable, but 4 years??!!
I don't care if it's a white lie for them to use as a reason for moving, but make it slightly more believable lol.

This made me worried so I asked a fellow friend, student in medicine. She told me the immediate symptoms were nausea, tiredness, headache and irregular breathing but they will disappear as soon as the gas leak is repaired.MoonPride wrote:I was talking to my Mum about the gas leak and she said they would of got very ill if they really had a leak for 4 years. However, there may be long-term consequences both mental and physical if the gas leak was important enough, it is not sure though, it all depends on the quantity of carbon monoxyde inhaled.

It all depends. I had a gas leak for over two years in my tiny flat in the hallway but it was close to the front door so when they found it, they said that because of the frequent air flow and because it was a tiny leak, it never affected my health. I never smelled anything either. Even if they're moving, doesn't mean they are lying about this. We don't know where exactly the leak was. If it's high up it also depends on how heavy the gas is compared to air etc. They also wouldn't spend much time in the hallway anyway, so they wouldn't be exposed to inhaling gas for longer than a few seconds at a time.MoonPride wrote:I was talking to my Mum about the gas leak and she said they would of got very ill if they really had a leak for 4 years. Yeah my mum said it also depends on ventilation and stuff and if they kept windows open etc, but I think they should at least get a full health check with their GP if it really was a 4 year leak just to be on the safe side.lerien wrote:This made me worried so I asked a fellow friend, student in medicine. I still reckon it only got discovered because they are moving and the landlord needed to get the flat inspected. Not because they decided to get it looked at.

I believe them mainly because if I would lie about this I would say something like 1 year and not the extreme case of 4 yearsRaspberrypi wrote:I was talking about the gas leak with my mom as wellMoonPride wrote:I was talking to my Mum about the gas leak and she said they would of got very ill if they really had a leak for 4 years. My landlord sends someone around every year to check my gas appliances and for leaks etc. That is another reason I think it's odd it's taken 4 years to discover.malday wrote:Doesn't the Uk have mandatory gas installation safety inspections like the rest of europe?

Well isn't the point of the meme video to talk about his year? So it makes sense to just get funny things that happened to him ideas (the first tweet about the video) and then the phandom can turn them into memes (the most recent tweet). I'm not sure how he did it last year. Also, all the dan memes from last year's video were not original dan memes. Some of them were established memes adapted for Dan, so I think there will be enough content for a video. He's only done it one other time so it's not stale to me and I liked it last year, so I'm looking forward to it personally.
Keeping my fingers crossed for a ls today, though I won't be able to watch it unfortunately. I wish he did his ls the same time Phil does, because I never get to see his. Oh well, I'm sure you guys will fill me in lol.
I suspect that someone is probably exaggerating about the gas leak. Be it the gasman, the landlord, or Phil. Didn't they move into the flat 4 years ago? Was it not inspected then? They've been gone most of last year so I suspect it happened sometime last year and they were never home to notice.

Phil said the gas leak was in the downstairs hallway, so I guess that means it's the hallway leading up to their and their neighbor's apartment doors (as seen in the festive DITL) and not the hallway in the actual apartment. In that case they wouldn't have constantly been exposed to it and then 4 years without either dropping dead gets more plausible?
It's possible, hopefully Dan can clarify in the live show.Catallena wrote:Phil said the gas leak was in the downstairs hallway, so I guess that means it's the hallway leading up to their and their neighbor's apartment doors (as seen in the festive DITL) and not the hallway in the actual apartment. We're only 10 days into 2017 so this year still has so much potential to not be a steaming trash pile and if I pretend for a sec that I'm not entirely a bitter shell of a human, I can be optimistic that Dan meant it when he said this year is about focusing on YT (only 10 days in; I always can look back and laugh about this later). So the fact that he's starting the year out with a glorified tumblr tag video (not even a drag, I liked the one from last year) is whatever; it's a way to look back over the past year and dive into the next.
The first upload (dapgoose doesn't count) in two months since a 'hot sexual mess' of a video that marked a turning point kind of builds up some expectations; this will be the first dinof vid after a 'post-baking universe' began and while dapg has been a wild ride, I want to see if and what creeps in to how he approaches things on his own channel this year. Does PBU only apply to him and Phil and their dynamic together (since dapg and AP have both been graced with the term already), or will Dan have any kind of noticeable shift on his own? What does a post-baking universe look like on the channel the baking happened on? Related/unrelated idk but personally I'm wondering if something akin to 2015's 'editing tips' nod will make it into this year's vid..
BUT, in terms of expectations of any kind, I'm not pinning too much on what is essentially a fluff meme-retrospective to kickstart the year. If Dan's not full of shit, there will be relatively plenty more videos where this one comes from and I'm excited for them. Oh the false promises of a new year.
And the gas thing, how about just wait and see what Dan says about it. Maybe the landlord smelled it and called someone, maybe D&P finally noticed their bills were too high, or who knows. It'd be a pointless thing to lie about as a cover for anything so even entertaining that thought is a waste. If they really are moving and want to not bother being upfront about it (both remain to be seen outside of conspiracy theorizing for fun) then needing storage is plenty 'cover'.

It actually makes sense if it's the hallway of their apartment (or is it the hallway of their building? I haven't followed) but I'm still amazed that regular check-ups didn't find the problem.MoonPride wrote: I still reckon it only got discovered because they are moving and the landlord needed to get the flat inspected. But I don't know what they would lie about it? To make us accept the fact they're moving more willingly? They know better than babysit us with lies, right?

A few possiblity with the gas leak;
• Phil is lying about the time frame for a dramatic effect, which he's done before. Remember "the police are going to be called again" and Dan told us that the police were never called on them for noise complaints before.
• Phil might have misunderstood what was being explained and they say said something along the lines of "for years" but Phil thought they said four years thus leading to him thinking that it was about the leak.
• It did go undetected for years due the the fact it was very minor and no one thought anything of it. And like people said about ventilation and stuff being the reason why it took so long.
But still!! Hopefully dan explains it tonight because this is kinda confusing!
edit: oops looks like most people already posted these by the time I did..

what about gas detectors, aren't those mandatory everywhere there is a gas installation to automatically shut down gas if there is a leak?MoonPride wrote:My landlord sends someone around every year to check my gas appliances and for leaks etc. That is another reason I think it's odd it's taken 4 years to discover.malday wrote:Doesn't the Uk have mandatory gas installation safety inspections like the rest of europe?

I dont think Phil exaggerated as much as you guys say. The difference between now and the other times he's exaggerated is that usually when he exaggerates it's a clear cut joke, this tweet was funny and lighthearted, but serious. Like saying it's been happening for 4 years is way to specific to be a joke. e They weren't straight inhaling a constant amount of gas and could only faintly smell it, so it makes sense that there was no health effects (as far as we know, keep in mind even if it did chances are they wouldn't tell us).
I have a carbon monixide detector installed by my landlord, so by law they should have one too I think. If not they should invest in one.malday wrote:what about gas detectors, aren't those mandatory everywhere there is a gas installation to automatically shut down gas if there is a leak?MoonPride wrote:My landlord sends someone around every year to check my gas appliances and for leaks etc. That is another reason I think it's odd it's taken 4 years to discover.malday wrote:Doesn't the Uk have mandatory gas installation safety inspections like the rest of europe?

I'm a bit curious of the inclusion of the dan howell starter pack. There are not that many pics and they mostly concern phil, lbtq, no homo and black. Don't know quite what to do with that.fancybum wrote:The first upload (dapgoose doesn't count) in two months since a 'hot sexual mess' of a video that marked a turning point kind of builds up some expectations; this will be the first dinof vid after a 'post-baking universe' began and while dapg has been a wild ride, I want to see if and what creeps in to how he approaches things on his own channel this year. it's definitely plausible. carbon monoxide is mostly dangerous because of its imminent danger, i.e. it reduces the blood's ability to absorb oxygen. as for long-term effects: it is classified as reproduction toxic as well as organ damaging, however this is to some extent put into perspective by the animal expiriments this was deducted from, i.e. inhalation of carbon monoxide for several hours a day over the course of a month with concentrations of several hundred ppm of carbon monoxide (which again would have to be scaled up to account for humans). i'm not saying it's all harmless, but if they didn't notice the gas leak, i.e. by breathlessness, dizziness, headaches etc., the air concentration was in all probability very low.Catallena wrote:Phil said the gas leak was in the downstairs hallway, so I guess that means it's the hallway leading up to their and their neighbor's apartment doors (as seen in the festive DITL) and not the hallway in the actual apartment. tl;dr: the time during which they didn't notice the leak doesn't really affect the plausibility, as if the air concentration is low enough not to cause immediate reactions, it can go unnoticed for a long time. if the leak was actually in the hallway downstairs, this makes even more sense as they probably don't spend extended time there, therefore the actual exposure to the substance would be low.
thank's you were great
I mean this is the same apartment that had a mice plague (ok fine it's an old building in the city shit happens I guess but I'm just saying) and where sparks flew from the light switches a few years back. Not to mentiont heir landlord let's himself in whenever he pleases like in that one video... me thinks their landlord is shady as hell and it wouldn't surprise if he never bothered with regular checks of the gas pipes or carbon monoxide detectors.
