Specifically when they got to the "If someone finds out a person used to be emo they could lose their job, their friends, or even the love of their family" part. It...idk it felt like mocking coming out. And like obviously that would not be what they were trying to do, (especially dan I mean we know he generally is cautious about this stuff) but its just I can't read that sentence as not blatantly parroting how people often talk about how lgbt people can lose their jobs and friends and be kicked out by their family if they come out and aren't accepted. And just idk, the people throwing rocks part too? People throwing rocks has a pretty vivid connotation to stoning for me idk.
That part threw me off too. I live in a state where you literally can be fired or denied housing bc of your sexuality. I know he and Anthony are very sensitive to those issues, but maybe being from Cali and the UK, they didn't think about all of the places in between?
My state just approved an anti-LGBT discrimination law lmao fml
I don't think anything was meant by it. It did catch me off guard for a split second though.
Not to tell either of you what to find funny or not. but the reference/comparison to lgbt discrimination/other types of discrimination was defintely the Joke in itself, that they as two fairly privileged guy would compare it to that level of discrimination, is obviously silly? That's what they aiming for, in my opinion. I didn't feel Lgbt discrimination was the the punchline. if that makes sense.
But obvs, if you feel it missed the mark, that's fine too.
Sorry to hear about your State

As a former Emo myself (who has been bullied for it a LOT in high school), I absolutely adored this video. It came at the right time for me too, I've been listening to a lot of Nirvana and Green Day the past week or so and generally feeling a bit like my emo!15-year-old-me again, so this was absolutely hilarious. This must've also been so much fun to make, I don't get how they managed to keep those serious faces. I need a blooper video asap. I also loved how Phil actually comes in IN SKINNY BLACK JEANS to stop Dan and Anthony.
I do get that the lgbt comparisons might be harrowing, but personally it didn't bother me. This whole video was so incredibly over the top anyway, I didn't take any of it seriously whatsoever.
(I also once got surrounded by a group of teenagers and then shouted at, in a train, for being an 'emo gothic lesbian' despite wearing bright pink shoes so idek, maybe I just deal with it differently, having actually gone through some similar experiences?)
EDIT: I'm also writing this at 1.30 AM and I'm super tired so sorry if I come across as rude or anything! I genuinely don't see it right now. (oh god I've written two posts here and both were when I was half asleep, I'll come back some day when I'm actually awake.)

just watched Dan's new video, and to be honest I'm really surprised to admit that I actually liked it, despite the fact that I never really was a true emo, nor was I a legit MCR fan . for whatever reason I absolutely didn't feel his and Anthony's first collab on Anthony's channel, it was just too extra and over the top and nothing in particular was funny to me, on the contrary it was rather obnoxious. I noticed that basically everyone loved the vid and to this day don't get the hype lol. but I'm pleasantly surprised by the new one, it didn't leave any negative feelings to me like I was expecting and like it sometimes happens when I watch Dan's main channel videos, but rather cracked me up a few times. Phil being in the video helped a lot and maybe somehow toned down Dan's usual over-dramatic, extra, ott self lol although I must say the whole "message" behind it is confusing, "stop emo-shaming, but let us also shame Phil and his emo fringe" what were they even trying to achieve there? but overall I just really appreciate all the gorgeous pictures of Phil Dan decided to include I also appreciate the fact that the video wasn't so overwhelmingly "#relatable" for a change, and good on him for not dragging it out to 10:01 minutes for the extra ad revenue because if it were any longer it would have probably killed the whole thing for me.
oh, and Phil liking that tweet something that I definitely didn't expect to see, but, again

Oh god, that video was way too relatable. I haven’t laughed so much at a Dan video in ages. Correct me if I’m wrong, but is this something Dan’s younger fans might have problems understanding? The big emo craze was about 10 years ago so viewers in their twenties probably could relate to the tight clothes thing and the picture comment bit but is this something present day teens know about? (I feel so old right now, man.)
I personally don’t think they were mocking anything except their younger emo selves (and Phil) actually. The whole thing reminded me of the kink shaming meme on Tumblr at best like
adonais said, it might have been inspired by that. And as others have pointed out, the rock throwing story was actually something that really happened to Dan so I guess they took stuff that really happened to them and exaggerated slightly.
The thing is, back in like 2006, emos got a lot of shit. I was told to go kill myself quite a few times just for how I looked, people kept cracking “jokes” about self harm and killing emos, emos got beaten up regularly… I don’t know, emo was a really weird cultural phenomenon that sparked a lot of hostility and a lot of people don’t remember that but it happened. Everybody hated emos. People wanted to hurt emos and they did. So I felt like they were jokingly referencing that as well when they said “you could lose your job etc.” You obviously couldn’t but people got beaten up for being emo, bullied and cruelly mocked a lot. It was a whole thing to hate emos so I think that’s what they were getting at there. Obviously if you felt the video was disrespectful that's valid too but I just thought I'd point this out since context is important.
To be honest, having been part of the emo scene is one of my fondest memories of my teen years, no matter how much shit I got back then (and still get, people really truly make fun of you still when they find out you were emo in 2006…), it was seriously fun.
Edit: This was the video with the rock throwing story, in case anyone cares/wants to revisit 2012 Dan:

didnt help that the Daily Mail did their 'suicide cult' moral panic.
Apparently The Black Parade is the place emos believe they go when they die
