is it just me or does anyone else feel like there's a huge disconnection between part of the phandom we see online and most of the people that show up at meet ups for example? like how can the stuck in 2011 cat whiskers people exist next to the actually not cringy more self aware part of the phandom? idk, most of the fandoms i've been part of had been a lot more uuuuuuuh homogeneous? than the phandom

I think it's just a case of the loudest, most annoying fans getting the most attention. I actually think that the embarrassing fans are less numerous than most people believe, but they are the ones that are PRO-tiping all over YouTube comment sections and posting regrettable things on Twitter, while the rest of us just suffer in silence (or complain on here.)

I can think of three factors. About the heterogeneity of the phandom I think the time you have been in the phandom actually plays a huge part. Like at first I would say people are more "normal fans" they are liking the content and dying over the cuteness and stuff but through interaction with the phandom itself and immersion in the phandom culture and bants but also with getting to know Dan and Phil's whole universe and histories and you know tics and flaws etc. people become more self aware and ironic while still being stuck and becoming a bigger and bigger
so I would say the cat whiskery special snowflakes probably have more chance to be newer fans (but it doesn't mean newer fans are gonna be like that automatically).

I also think in their content, Dan and Phil actually have an incredible talent for ambiguity. Like honestly I think really young or more innocent people can watch them and think they are cute and funny and then older nose perverts or self aware teens can laugh at their dirty innuendos and analyse the moment they are more real but usually passing off as a joke. I think they have this ability to have a double entendre on their content so that two groups of widely different people can both like them.

Finally for the difference with the persons at the meet ups. I actually think all those peeps being real and ironic on twitter are exactly the same that type in capslock that they "are so tall" and post cutesy picture and text posts about Dan and Phil being angels. Because at the end of the day, I would say the majority of us all really like deppy and so when we meet them or go see the show, the full on takes over.

I find this stuff all really interesting and I think another factor is the nature of YouTube—in that videos from way back (apart from the privated ones ) are just as easy as ones from, say, last year? I think the disconnect in the phandom is mirrored by a huge disconnect in Dan—I actually find it so hard to believe that 2009 Dan and 2016 Dan are the same person. Phil on the other hand is apparently unchanging. So people can be taking 2016 as a sort of starting point, or the 2009 version or anything in between, but if it wasn't all so easily accessible on YouTube, the cat whiskers/placenta part of the phandom would surely be less numerous.

That's such a good point, and probably how it works. All the videos from all the different ~eras~ of Dan and Phil are still up so people can start anywhere and pick and choose which era they relate to the most and finds the most funny, and leech onto that.

I certainly have! Leeched on, I mean. My first contact with Deppy was Dan's 2012-2013 videos, where he was arguably a lot more of a sassy sarcastic bastard than he is nowadays. And that's the sense of humour that I liked, and it's the sense of humour I'll constantly perpetuate on Twitter, and the sense of humour I rejoice over when I see Dan use it in newer stuff. But if I'm honest with myself Dinof hasn't actually been like that for aaages and the channel's current brand of humour is more "awkward ha-ha" than anything else. ....Which I don't like as much, but I guess I tend to ignore that and pretend like it's still all about my sense of humour, and it's easy to do because lolz old videos. If I was all about llamas and placentas, I'm sure I could've leeched onto that instead and it would have worked perfectly fine.

Also about the video.. I laughed so much because I love the three of them together but I felt kind of bad for TomSka because he looked really uncomfortable. As everyone here already said, this is really not style of videos and go against their brand and really, I wouldn't like it at all if they did something like that. They are our old married nerdy couple not just some 'best bros' that electroshock their balls on camera. In moments like these we really can see the difference between and everyone else on YT/ guys that are just best friends and nothing more. Things like these make me appreciate more than I already do.

Oh yeah, they've done challenges with electroshocking devices plenty of times (sorry, on mobile, can't reply properly) - it's just a different context entirely when you turn it into *that* thing. To me, that's basic bro-lemme-show-you-how-I-can-out-bro-you-bro, and they're not even being ironic about it. It's kinda like - D&P've made some good fart jokes, but this video is like, the equivallent of trying to light those farts on fire. It's not like there's anything wrong with it, or with enjoying it, I guess I feel about it the same way I feel about FIFA let's plays - I know they're out there, I know people enjoy them, but they're just not for me. Like it's just that very very "boyz will be boyz" culture that I see no allure in, I guess. I was drawn in by D&P because it makes me very happy that boys who like playing video games together can also be gentle, subtle & have these fascinating boundaries and so much depth for me to depict & overanalyze. And just generally, but that's my weird things, I like that despite being friends with most these people & having things in common with them, they don't feel the need to fit perfectly into that mold of a stereotypical dude bro broing about with his other bros.
