I can assure you, my friend had braces when she was about 12/13. She was gummy before, during, and after. The gumminess doesn't go away. That's just what some people have. I personally like "gummy" smiles like Phil, I think they're really cute. It's one thing I always like about his smile. Phil doesn't need to get his teeth straightened, its one thing wishing he'd shake up his clothing or hairstyles because that's normal, getting haircuts and buying new clothes are normal. But if Phil got his teeth straightened I'm pretty sure people will post "omg he should do his nose next!!!!"sentinel wrote:It's you and the fact you've been conditioned to see straight teeth as better. In Japan, for a while there was a trend to have cooked, fang like teeth - so popular that in fact people would go to dentists and have their teeth artificially crooked. But tbh I don't like that Phil's smile can sometimes be so gummy, that's one of the things I find so unattractive in people.Phantasy wrote:[offtopic]Am I kind of a dick for secretly wishing Phil (and Dan) would get their teeth straightened? I don't know if it's the new room lighting, new camera (or plethora of zoom-effects in the last gaming video), but my eyes keep focusing on Phil's teeth especially. Earlier in the thread when the topic was on Phil's hair, my though was I think his hair suits him well enough, it's just out dated and time for a change up—my eyes however keep lingering on their teeth (again maybe the better lighting/camera). I mean, they must have invisalign or something similar in the U.K. that's unobtrusive and not fixed into place unlike braces? Or maybe I'm being to vain and if they don't care why should I? personally I like Phil´s (not so) crooked teeth. I like his baggy pant-knees, his posture, his hands movements. even though I wouldn't mind another hairstyle if he wants one some day, I like his fringe, too. simply because it's him. I would never want them to look like Hollywood stars because their imperfections is what I like about them. wow what a stan here
but in all seriousness, for me that's what makes them closer and more relatable, unique and more endearing

One of my favorite things about both of them appearance-wise is their front teeth. I absolutely love when people have features that stick out and make them more memorable. (Just think how the girl from Dirty Dancing got a nose job and lost the thing that made her stand out)
Maybe it's because I have the blandest face myself. I always think it's sad when people correct the things that make them interesting.

Wow, I usually just lurk but I have been really uncomfortable reading here these past days. First with the fringe/quiff discussion and now teeth? It feels like some of you try to create this perfect ken doll out of Phil. It's Phil's choice to have a fringe so let him have it. When he is comfortable with changing his hair style, he will do it himself. If he likes his fringe does anything else matter? I dyed my hair bright red 5 years ago and since then family members tell me to change it, that is doesn't suit me and do you think that I have done it? Hell no, because I love my hair. And the same is for Dan. Everytime people started persuading him to stop straightening his hair, I just silently screamed that he will do it himself when he is ready. And it seems he finally is. Just stop trying to change things on these guys they themselves don't want to change (yet).

Idk, I don't think discussion's been too out of line and in need of policing. Like, it is a forum, people are allowed to share opinions that everyone else might not agree with, and talk about stuff not everyone might want to talk about.tymyky wrote:Wow, I usually just lurk but I have been really uncomfortable reading here these past days. And there's a difference between posting on a forum and tweeting this stuff at Phil. This wouldn't be the place to post if the goal was to 'change' them. I don't think there's much of a chance of either of them reading stuff on here.
Personally, I think Phil's right and the wonky teeth add character, but I don't care if someone else disagrees, especially if they're from a place where it's common to straighten imperfect teeth. I don't think we have to censor what we say and only ever be positive, essentially, and that the boys' appearances/fashion decisions shouldn't be off-limits.
Ontop of that, most people have been quite positive. Just wait for the collective death next time either of them posts a selfie- most of us do like how they look.
Look at me getting involved in the discourse oh god what have I done.
I miss Dan Howell's stupid face.

I think commenting on hairstyles and clothes is fair game maybe, as those are changeable and a bit more surface-level. But Phil can't help the way his teeth are, and I just think of people reading here who are insecure about their crooked teeth or their big gums or whatever, and I hope they don't feel bad. Not to sound corny, but our imperfections genuinely are what make us beautiful and unique. It's expensive and painful to straighten teeth, and no one should ever feel that it's something they are obliged to do in order to achieve an unrealistic, Americanised standard of beauty. Basically - embrace your so-called "flaws", and there's nothing wrong with having crooked/'imperfect' teeth
I personally don't feel like the discussion has gone out of line and it is interesting to read, but I don't want to participate in it anyway, for one simple reason: if Phil were to read this, I think he'd feel bad. This is a forum made up of their fans, and hearing such pointed critique wouldn't be nice for him, I think.
It's one thing to hear some random hater call him ugly etc., it's another when his fans are discussing his teeth or his hair and how they like or dislike it.
I don't mean to be schooling anyone! I just have too much empathy, I guess. I for one think they're both handsome men and if they're happy with their appearances, they shouldn't change a thing.

re: Phils hair - I like it? I think he could style it better but thats my being picky. If he wanted to change from black to his natural colour it would really hard. Black is a bitch, it won't strip easily so you either have to wait it out (it'd make him look bald for a while due to the contrast of red/black) or strip and dye it which is so damaging. And the more black dye on his hair the harder it would be for him. (I also love his black hair, I like it pushed back a bit though)
re teeth: I have some small teeth problems (overbite and a crooked tooth) and was denied braces on the NHS because my problems were very slight. I don't want them to fix their teeth - especially Dan. His chipped teeth make me feel more confident about my chipped teeth. They're not like Emma Blackery's where they 'needed' fixing - their teeth aren't perfect but they're not problematic so it would be a waste of money.

Coming from someone who has braces, Phil doesn't need them. I needed them for a while, I really don't anymore. At this point, my teeth don't need braces, but I have to keep them on for about another year to have "perfect" teeth. I hate it, so I understand why Phil wouldn't wanna fix his. It's a lot of trouble and an unrealistic expectation.
Most of us participating in the discussion have said the exact same thing though. The most important thing is that Phil is happy with his look and if he is then that's amazing and I'm glad for him. The discussion was mostly about what we would like to see him try look-wise and since none of us went and tweeted him about it, I think that's okay. It's all in good fun and everyone was being respectful as far as I remember. Like, no one will go up to Phil and tell him to change his hair. If he's happy with the way his hair looks that's absolutely great. But I don't think there's any harm in talking about what we think would suit him on a message board at all. As long as it stays here and no one literally goes up to him and bothers him about it like your family did I think it's all good.tymyky wrote:Wow, I usually just lurk but I have been really uncomfortable reading here these past days. Like, back when that "they've put on weight!" discussion was happening I was also uncomfortable because it was dangerously close to body shaming. But this hasn't happened here, no one is seriously shaming Phil for his hair choices, it's just a nice little chat about what we think would suit Phil. I mean, it's just hair after all. We talk about their fashion styles and what we like to see them wear a lot too and I think talking about hairstyles is the exact same thing, completely harmless, whereas discussions about weight (and the teeth thing to be honest, I agree with you on that) are connected to certain social expectations about beauty which is where it gets icky, like sentinel and dia explained.

Hey everyone! Been lurking keeping up to date with everything (on here, Twitter and Tumblr) but was busy with work (summer job, yay).
Just want to get my thoughts out when I have this spare time!
Vidcon meetngreets: It's such a shame that some people who had paid to get the wristbands didnt get to meet DnP while people who had fake passes did. Fingers crossed that things get sorted out for next year and for future meetngreets (not just for DnP, but for all Youtuber meetups.
Try Guys: Never heard of them before Vidcon. They killed it with their impressions of internet history. But DnP's impression was definitely catered to the shippers. They knew that. That impression was based on the reputation that the phandom has for shipping Deppy.
As a shipper (and trash), I did scream when I saw the gifs circulating on Tumblr. But looking at the video on subsequent viewings, it's a bit out of place compared to all the other Youtuber impressions that were just their greetings. Plus they said 'Hello' for Deppy way too many times!
Pretty awkward for DnP considering they were just offstage.
Night Of Community: I love domestic bants. They are such an old married couple. (I had to use that phrase and I'm not apologising!). And it is equally both their fault that they missed their flight. Looking forward to the liveshows returning for more domestic stories.
Tomska vlog: I love Tom, that is all. That moment on the beach was so precious.
Fine Bros: So many good Youtubers. Such a bland video. At least Deppy looked good. And more of the Sexual Fantasies jumper pls Dan!
Cat video: GET THEM A DOG PLEASE!!!! THAT VIDEO KILLED ME!!!!! cute af!
Gaming videos: It is truly an experience to watch their 2017 vids vs their 2014-2015 vids. They are just so much more happier on camera knowing that they can exchange flirty banter and funny comments (and touching!) without having people overanalysing every single touch. They just do not give a toss anymore and that is beautiful.
Someone here said that this is a golden period atm. I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.
Sidenote: With their overall openness and flirtyness this year, do people here think that they going to make Phan obvious? Or just quietly mention something? There has been such a change in their behaviour and in how people will percieve their relationship to each other more than ever these days.
In other words, do you think they will 'come out' this year? I'm fairly sure that yes, they are in a relationship (in a glass closet). Singapore, moving into their 3rd apartment, forever home and future dog (corgi?) was the turning point for me.
Curls: Gimme some volume Phil. I love the quiff. I like the curls. I think its time to start to loose the super straight hair. I want some shaggyness (like in 2013?)
What a photo to use of Dan's straight hair amiright? (Pretty boi)

And THERE WAS A LION IN THE CORNER OF THE ROOM! Not og Lion (where is he???) but the lion that Phil hits Dans head with while saying 'Attack!' (what video is that?)
Also, thank you to all the amazing posters who create timestamps for everything (especially alittledizzy! I love your Tumblr btw). They always give me a laugh and make me notice things that I missed.
Wow this is such a long post. I'll shut up (for now).

Lovely post, AmazingOCD! I too keep wondering where og Lion is.
I'm really sad he's not in the background like he always has been.
Re, the hair thing: I think people are also not giving Phil enough credit if they think his feelings are hurt by people saying they think he'd look good with a certain hairstyle. After all, how many years did people demand Dan stop straightening his hair? And when did Dan actually do it? ... when he was damn well ready to himself.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with people on a forum discussing how they think someone else would look good. We all become pseudo-stylists in our own head when we talk about the hair/makeup/clothes of celebrities and youtubers we like from that kind of superficial aesthetic point of view. In my opinion, neither Phil nor Dan need to be defended against that, and no one needs to feel bad for enjoying it.

Reading all these posts reminds me of the FaceApp video where Dan is freaked out by the smile that gets put on Phils face. It looks unnatural, it's not Phil-like.
Wearing braces myself for the last 3 and a half years (to fix a multitude of dental problems), I do want straight teeth. But by having train tracks, I've lost the gap-tooth i had between my two front teeth (which I miss so much, to compensate i look at pics of Madonna)
Phil's teeth: while not straight, they do not need to be fixed.

Teeth / braces discussion: I had them when I was in my early teens (and so did my older brother - bad teeth run in the family, apparently.) My parents were smart enough to install the braces in us at the same time to minimise squabbling / teasing. Anyway, I had a gap between my front teeth, an "overbite," and not enough room in my skull for wisdom teeth to erupt in the future. For the most part it worked: no drama in the wisdom teeth presentation, and my teeth are relatively straight (the lower front teeth are ever so slightly jammed together / not aligned perfectly (probably my fault for being a bad patient and not wearing my retainer - I'm such a rebel,) but I do have issues related to having had braces. First, the bands can damage gum tissue on people with smaller teeth when the bands dig into the gum line, requiring grafting later which is not cheap. Make sure to insist on technologies that does not use bands, although if your teeth are severely misaligned, moving teeth a significant distance can cause gum / bone issues anyway. Secondly, some dentists don't know shit about what they are doing, so be careful when selecting a provider. My current dentist thinks my orthodontist fucked up when designing my treatment plan because it actually affected my profile, making my chin a bit more prominent than it should be (lower teeth should have been moved forward rather than upper teeth moved back.) Bottom line is that orthodontics is not something to consider lightly. As someone mentioned above, slightly crooked teeth can be a feature / charming. Don't mess with them unless they are really bothersome or are causing a health problem. One of my friends just recently completed his treatment for cosmetic reasons. I never knew it bothered him, but it didn't change anything in my eyes, he's still cute as f*ck.
I don't really care about this conversation (lol great contribution me), anyone can do whatever with their teeth and hair. But yeah, *needing* braces and *wanting* braces are different things. I had very crooked bottom teeth and some slight vampire fangs (because my incisors were crowded/too high up) and I was insanely self-conscious about smiling or anybody looking at my teeth for my entire adolescent life. And I'm the kind of person who won't do anything even slightly horrifying until I have to (or am told to) and my dentist never told me to get braces, so I just miserably dealt with it for too long because that's how I roll. But then I was like, damn if I can do even one thing to hate myself less, might as flipping well and so I got braces when I was like 19 or 20. And it sucked haaard but now I don't cover my mouth when I laugh. And like, nobody was throwing tomatoes at me over some crooked teeth, but they bothered me. Now if somebody (as in, not a dentist/ortho) had said to me 'wow you should get braces' I would have nodded politely and then cried about it alone later lmao. It does feel like a mean thing to comment on, because 'fixing' them is a long and anxiety-inducing/amplifying, money-draining ordeal. I don't regret it, I regret not doing it sooner actually, but if Phil (and anybody else with not perfectly aligned teeth) are fine with them, man let them live. I still have stress dreams of being in the orthodontist chair having the braces removed, and all of my teeth falling out. Shit sucks.

I had braces for 2 years as a child, which cost my parents a lot of money. When my wisdom teeth grew in a few years later, my bottom teeth became almost as crooked again. I think it's valid for people to choose to get braces if they want and can afford it, but I don't really like the societal pressure to have perfect teeth, because even people who spend a fortune fixing them don't always get it "right". Also, while I don't feel like getting into the discussion about whether or not fandom should discuss looks, hair style, etc., I do think the comment that said Phil's smile is too gummy (?) was a bit unnecessary. To paraphrase something I think Phil said in a live show once: you shouldn't criticise something about a person that they can't change. But maybe I'm projecting; I have very visible gums and it's been a source of a lot of insecurity over the years and stopped me from smiling with my teeth a lot.

Finally got around to watching the youtubers react. I liked the fact that I knew every person there, and enjoyed their content to some extent. Topic was rather bland (it isn't k-pop tho so...). I found some of the ones funny, stealing the shoes was v amusing.
Dan and Phil doing it on their chairs (innuendo wahyy) was better than the others, and Phil interrupting with "British people" instead of "Bitches" reminded me a bit of the internet is here lmao.
Overall, meh. They looked gorgeous though, great outfit choices lads

What is your source for this information?AmazingOCD wrote:Vidcon meetngreets: It's such a shame that some people who had paid to get the wristbands didnt get to meet DnP while people who had fake passes did. Fingers crossed that things get sorted out for next year and for future meetngreets (not just for DnP, but for all Youtuber meetups.
When I was sitting in the arena waiting for Jenna and Julien's Q&A, a girl behind me was talking loudly on the phone about this, and she had just come from the dan and phil meetup. This is my best source of information on the topic, since I'm not aware of any official statements (if there is one, please let me know!)
According to her, everyone who won the Dan and Phil meetup prior to Vidcon did get to meet them. This is what she described:
-About an hour into the meetup, security noticed there were more people in line than expected.
-Security announced that they were going to aquire a list of names of attendees who won the Dan and Phil meetup (this is possible, since the lottery system is online and connected to your ticket, with your name.)
-Security announced that anyone who could not recite a name to identify as someone on the list would have their badge confiscated and be kicked out of and banned indefinitely from future Vidcons.
-Attendees were given the opportunity to leave without fault at this point.
The girl behind me speaking on the phone said that she doesn't know what happened after that, because she took that opportunity to leave.
It's possible that security did not actually get the list and just relied on the threat to be enough motivation. It's also possible that they did get the list and honored everyone left on it. However, what didn't happen (apparently) is the line getting cut off and people who honestly won the meetup getting denied the meetup. From what I've seen, Vidcon takes honoring these meetups seriously, and I can't see them just cutting it off.
Just wanted to shed some light on this. If there's further information on the topic please show me!
They had to say hello that much, people were screaming so loud and for so long!! lol. I personally loved their impression. I think it was very daring and i have to hand it to them. Although I can understand why some people were uncomfortable.AmazingOCD wrote:Try Guys: Never heard of them before Vidcon. They killed it with their impressions of internet history. But DnP's impression was definitely catered to the shippers.... Plus they said 'Hello' for Deppy way too many times!
I wonder if the try guys got a DM?

Phil looks like he went to sleep at 6 AM and is dying inside, Dan glows like he spent the night having orgasms - Ticia
