thank you very much! yes, I agree - I wasn't actually a contributor to the forum so I can't really speak for anybody, but the whole general vibe of gg was pretty unsettling and I felt as if some people really crossed the line at times with personal attacks directed to the ytubers in question and other users.

@ corn flakes I agree, I really think it's a direct result of their personas - I'm guilty of thinking that if Dan tweeted some dark existential crap (like he does on occasion), I wouldn't bat an eyelid, yet if Phil tweeted something even remotely negative I'd be a bit concerned. The Phandom would comparatively be in absolute meltdown if Phil even expressed some form of discontent. i can just see the #staystrongphil trends haha

trapped in his persona - yeah, ugh, exactly. and i absolutely agree it's not fake, but he's not a glee character & does not have just 2 personality traits, so i think being expected to always be the same, especially considering how much time has passed & the fact that his persona was established when he was in a far, far less happy place... yeah, ugh.
and absolutely, it's the same for phil, only the persona he's "trapped in" is the polar opposite of dan's - though with phil, not sure if it's a trap or actually his shield of choice

I don't have that many thoughts except I consistently marvel at how self-aware he is. It must get tiring to always be analyzing yourself and your social interactions and your creative output. I don't know why he views danisnotonfire as this precious, holy thing that he's afraid of sullying by soppiness or trashy/fun content. I wish he would get over that. It's interesting how he feels such a need to justify himself. All the time. Everything he tweets, everything he does...if it's in any way out of character or received any attention in the phandom, he'll talk about it in a liveshow and explain himself / give excuses. I appreciate the realness, but sometimes I feel like he's just saying what his insecurities obligate him to say.

All the sentimental things that he was saying during book promo (their wish to preserve "the world of D&P", that they doing it to appreciate the fans, etc) does not fit well with danisnotonfire persona, to the point that it sounded very fake and insincere to me. It seems Dan realised it too.
Now i'm inclined to think that money was not their only nor main reason to do tatinof. The amount of time and work that they putting in it and the high quality suggest otherwise. They look genuinely excited about it as well as the majority of their fans.

As for him viewing his main channel the way you describing, i have a feeling it slowly getting better. The lack of sketch comedy that everyone (including me) are mourning, might be a sign of him getting away from dinof to DH. It seems that his content becomes more diverse with time. Maybe not better, and less consistent, but diverse and less dinof-y. I am not talking about quantity, only quality

I think one of his big problem? I think, lead to his crative crisis and sometimes self justify, is I think he uses self critic as a coping mechanism of his insecurities.

It happens when you did something, and received some negative feedback, so you feel bad about yourself. It happens a lot so you see the negative feedback as an inevitable outcome. And in order to deal with it, you began to run through all the worst possibilities in your brain, and your emotion were set to deal with these possibilities. Finally you make a habit out of it, unconsciously, you internalized all the negative feedback, and you became the biggest critic of yourself.

It's sorta like how self sabotage works - because you never experienced much positive emotions, you became use to deal with negative ones, so when real happiness do come, you would feel unsettling and fear it would go away any moment, so you self sabotage, just to get it over with, because at lease you already know how to deal with sadness and anger.

In Dan's case, because he internalized all the critics, before he could actually do anything for others to criticize, or before others criticize him, he could be "i'm already criticizing myself, i know this video idea is not good enough/i know i'm soppy, so you don't have to do it to me."

I don't know where he got this habit from, maybe his family, maybe his school days, maybe his earlier youtube years. But if he really does that, i think he should realize that, and not to over think everything. That's why i'm kinda happy to see in this week's liveshow he apparently don't give much shit about many things, except for the crunchyroll ad. He should totally take a page out of Kanye's book and be more unapologetic of who he is and what he does.

Not implausible. D&P is such a big name now, namedropped everywhere, and they at least should be likely to be used as an example the same way Zoella is (it actually surprises me how very often Zoe's name is mentioned in everything from tabloids to serious news to her own Youtube peers having a go at her, when D&P are only ever mentioned in a positive or jokingly insulting way - like someone said earlier, they've gotten famous in an intelligent way).

They've certainly been on Jack's mind lately, what with his YTer impressions vid, the reactions he got from it, and his Younow chat clarifying to him they're CHILL VLOGGERS ( ).

tbh I don't think he needs to completely rebrand himself, but he needs to stop pigeonhole himself. danisnotonfire is not an evil alterego that prevents Dan to express depth, sincerity or any other emotion than relatable irony. He has made it himself by becoming a caricature of danisnotonfire.
It has not always been that way but he has been going more and more one note, further and further in this caricatural presentation of himself. Without completely changing everything and having a like Miley Cyrus explosion, I think he can just ease back to being a bit more himself aka a bit more subtle and just more than deadpan relatable self-deprecation.
It has always been clear the persona on his channel was only a small part of his personality and he has stated it before. It just seems like he forgot it at some point?

Is Flula not as well known as I thought? I first saw him on MDK in 2013 with Hannah, and his Auto Tunes vids are great It's safe to assume most things he says are said in jest.

Like his recent JackAsk where he used all Shane Dawson videos as an example of what he'd rather not be doing? Loool. He basically said no one was being shaded, he was just comparing different genres, but... why so obviously use one specific YTer as the joke if you won't just own it (I mean he obviously wasn't trying to be subtle)? Especially somebody he's friendly with. And then he asked why it's impossible to have a serious discussion without people yelling 'shade' from the sidelines. That video was not meant to start a serious discussion of any kind so what a weird attempt at justification. I found the whole thing kind of odd.

On topic: umm... 10 days until Tipsy Talk! And probably/maybe another video since Phil said he also filmed with Hazel for his own channel! But he still needs to do a solo one as well first? And he's not going to put out 2 videos within 10 days, so... ? These guys are frustrating.

The new themes have made me realize that Dan and Phil have the same duvet covers (I mean I knew this but it just hit me).Didn't Phil have his way before though? Does this mean that Dan purposefully searched for the same one, like a copy cat? I sort of want to go back to watch some vidoes to see if Dan was maybe trying to be another version of Phil, consideirng the mention that he was imitating Phil's humor in AmazingDan.

Now to catch up on the rest of this thread! There have apparently been chickens mentioned and I'm confused.

I'm slightlhy uncomfortable after watching this.

I love the Jon Cozart video. I feel like he was making the same point as Jack Howard did about the state of youtube, except Jon did it with a healthy amount of self-awareness and parody toward what he himself as part of the youtube community is guilty of - while Jack Howard just came off as whiny and pretentious.
