Apparently it's their 'anniversary' :
Agree with what phamnotof said regarding merch. Especially 2) - that's why the example with American band making merch with cyrillic doesn't work the same way.
Love the photobooth poster, much cute.
Echoing SquishPhan's super cute. I feel as if Dan added those hashtags to make his original statement less sincere and a bit more #ironic but pal we all know that japan was your dream trip you took with your original internet celebrity crush.

It's too bad they don't have any time to be on panels:
Maybe next year.

They just used japanese characters. It's just one way to write something. I sometimes use them to write something I don't want others to read. Sure, I don't make money from it. But they didn't put Geishas, Sumo wrestlers or a Shinto shrine or something on the shirt. Relax. your anus.

Yesss I am right there with you!! Forever sad Dan never talked about the Christmas Takeover R1 thing (and therefore Rose and Rosie) in a liveshow, really hope they do end up working together again one day.

This!
So I have thought about the same thing about Russian...
If I were to use cyrillics in the same context would it also be inappropriate? I'm not Russian, I do speak some Russian but that is besides the point. I don't really romanticize Japan or Russia myself because they are both awful, even if i really like certain aspects of the countries.
Edit: I do use both cyrillics and hiragana/katakana often, the only difference background wise would be that I have Russian native speakers around all the time and I was born in a country that was part of the USSR
I'll stop rambling now.

Hello! Whoo, my first post here after finally finding out where all the GG discussion moved to.
Re: new merch: I was so happy to see something I can finally wear without giant colourful letters screaming DAN & PHIL at everyone that goes past me. I thought the design was cute, and finally incospicuous enough for me. I never even thought some people might see it as 'problematic' in any way, though after reading here I see I was wrong. I see everyone's point, but I'm still going to happily wear it as I love Japan (welp, call me a weeb), and I love Dan&Phil and that we finally got merch that is so subtle.
Seeing people's reactions to it, I wonder if they'll address the cultural appropriation argument in a liveshow or sth. Dan might do it, but if it's a joint liveshow I have a feeling that he'll ignore it for the sake of Phil who usually stays out of anything even mildly controversive.
P.S. love how this new forum works!! Finally no glitching

I don't see what's wrong with it, to be honest. Maybe that is because I live in a multicultural country that promotes sharing cultures as much as you can and nobody really cares if you wear each other's traditional clothes. Yeah, that. Nothing more from me on this subject.

Isn't Russia's culture and especially its people fetishized to death though? With the ways they are represented fuelling stereotypes and denying the complexity of their culture?
phamnotof wrote:
2) cultural exchange is a much different thing when the power dynamic has been messed up by history, so yeah, western people adopting japanese texts is different than japanese ppl using western languages on their designs. and the ever-brewing culture of fetishization of japanese culture that in many ways fuels stereotypes and denies complexity makes this even more complicated
on this idea that some cultures should be more sheltered and protected than others because of past dynamics, I actually kinda have a problem with that? I see it as some kind of weird patriarchy. Like a reversed fetishisation. One end of the spectrum you have orientalism and weaboo culture etc. but on the other end you have this idea that it shouldn't be touched, interacted with or mixed with by non-natives and it effectively puts it on another (inferior) level, like a child that should be protected because it is weaker? I don't think Japanese culture is on a weaker level compared to western culture and I don't think it should be given a special untouchable treatment.
Trashqueen, I also want Rose and Rosie and Dan and Phil to become friends (or just collab tbh)

I am too , I love Rose and Rosie and think that they adore DP! I want to see some couple vlogging
About the merch, I really like the shirts but can understand the controversy behind it. You don't know how many times I've seen shirts with Arabic calligraphy and gotten annoyed not only because it was on a random DIAMOND Co. t-shirt but that the language (which in itself is holy) is disrespected for the purpose of aesthetics. I understand the need for respect among cultures especially because Japanese culture hasn't always been portrayed correctly by the media. I actually live with a Japanese and Korean and have learned a lot about their culture. There is a huge disparity on what we see as Japan and what the culture really is and I'm sad that it's not understood.

As phamnotof said, eastern culture, especially east and southeast asia culture is heavily fetishicized in the west, and the world nowadays is very western centric, so multinatinalism and cultural appropriation is just have a fine fine line between them. Multinatinalism is builded on mutual respect and understanding. Cultural appropriation is one-day taking-without-understanding. It's different. I simply wish Deppy would treat such issue with sensitivity.

Looks like Dan is wearing his iconic eclipse shirt again to preform in, wasn't he like only wearing that outfit on the UK shows? lol Maybe that's the reason he bought a bigger one this year
hmm I wonder if they will go all Free! (anime) themed this year instead of brokeback mountain

Honestly, that's what I reckon was in the box between the piano and the door in his room through the liveshows recently. Tons of them so you can wear one onstage, then peel it off (eww, stage lights are effing HOT...!) and chuck it afterwards.
They're gonna NAIL it though.

There's some deep political conversations taking place here and here I am posting bad photoshop edits. (I enjoy the conversations, though. )
Anyways, I knew Phil's eyebrows were light/a different color than his dyed hair, but in those photobooth pictures they really stood out to me. Have some super bad photo edits of him with filled in brows:
Note I don't mean these edits as like a "this is what 100% what he should start doing and this is the only correct way to manage your appearance," I was just interested in what the darker eyebrows would actually look like (as an amateur makeup artist) and I was bored and had 5 minutes to play on Photoshop. I for one actually like the fact his eyebrows don't match, it's interesting and kind of quirky in a nice way
