Am I the only one who thinks it's been a lot of merch this year? Even too much?
If he wants to have a fashion line, that's fine with me, but it just seems weird to sell merch for an almost dead brand.

Aww, Dan tum. Also hip bones. Ya-hum. I could really go for those pencils and maybe the notebook. The black-edged paper really makes it.

I mean, that's basically what it is at this point, but I'm okay with that. His merch has his logo sure, but there aren't direct references to his channel/videos anymore- it would be different if they were still putting out new DAPG merch, or maybe even new ISG merch after that mug that we know he was working on for a long time. He's not even promoting it via his channel, so it's basically just Daniel Howell merch and he still has a presence in some forms online. I buy merch for tv shows that ended a long time ago all the time- Lost may have ended 9 years ago, but you bet I bought a mug last week that has the smoke monster appear when the mug gets hot.LtrllySusan wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:53 pm Am I the only one who thinks it's been a lot of merch this year? I actually quite like the design of the sweatshirt (and I rarely like any of his stuff), but I see Dan went to the same school of Ruining A Perfectly Good Sweater With An Awkward 2/3 Crop as the rest of affordable fashion. Thanks, I hate it. I'm tall and have large boobs. Normal sweaters and shirts are often already too short. Please release me from the cropped nightmare that has become shopping in the last 2 years.
I really like the backpack and I considered buying it but... I also haven't used a backpack since I was 15. I would literally never use it and it'd be a waste of money. It's still pretty tho. I'm such a whore for glitter.
Also still feel like not enough content for this much merch but I already said that at a previous merch release.

I’m new to the fandom and from my perspective their merch seems to be another avenue for their creativity, related to but not wholly dependent on their identities as content creators. I really really like that their merch doesn’t have a lot of branding on it. IDK, they just seem to really enjoy creating things and I support that.

WHY THE CROP TOP?! I would have bought the normal sweater so fast, damn it.
Also Dan is cute and all but my eyes only see the two amazing ladies there, sorry.

I use a backpack every day (seriously, if you haven't tried it for a while, do it. Free the arms and hands for activities!). I just bought a pearlescent silver one though and feel like I probably don't also need a black sequin one.... but I want it. It could be my 'party' backpack?
I think I'll just put it on my xmas wish list.

yeah i agree. tbh i think the effect of the triple merch drop since june has been softened on me because i'm still slowly working my way through all their 2017-18 content for the first time. otherwise i'd be feeling more cynical this evening. as it is, i'm not annoyed or anything, just kinda indifferent, i guess.Catallena wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 8:29 pm Also still feel like not enough content for this much merch but I already said that at a previous merch release.
i mean the photos were cute and all but like... i miss dan

I realise I say this at every merch launch, but I genuinely love the new products, once again! I’m a total stationery fiend so obviously I was gonna be all about the pencils and notebook, I love anything glittery and I carry a backpack every day (after years of destroying my shoulder with a huge handbag) so hell yes, and the jumper is so cute. (I’m incredibly short so most of their merch is super long on me. This’ll be a nice change lol!) I also like that it’s subtle in terms of what fandom it’s from; all my fave fannish merch is like that. (The bag also reminds me of his sequin jacket.
)
Can I get some Fs in the chat for my poor credit card after all these merch launches though, ouch.

You make a very sensible point. I agree. Thank you.onceinaugust wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 8:03 pmI mean, that's basically what it is at this point, but I'm okay with that. We had a lot of merch and not as much content this past year but i don't really see why would we need content for merch (which could be considered for some as content bc dnp love creating merch) and i also don't see what that would matter.LtrllySusan wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:53 pm Am I the only one who thinks it's been a lot of merch this year? Merch is definitely not mandatory so anyone is allowed not to buy it.

The photos are lovely and fun, but MORE merch??? It’s excessive, borderline ridiculous. He’s produced one video this entire year. And had, what, 3 merch releases? 4? There doesn’t have to be a 1:1 correspondence between merch and content but sheesh! There needs to be some sort of balance. This excess of merch feels a bit exploitative.
Also, the cynic in me can’t help but notice the timing of this drop in relation to Phil’s most recent instastories. Phil gets the phandom riled up, and then Dan drops his new merch. I want the two to be unrelated but...

Like onceinaugust and Ataraxia25 said, merch isn't mandatory to buy, nor is it something outside of basically being a fashion line. Similarly to what onceinaugust said about Lost, would the same be said for buying merch for bands? Nirvana hasn't been together since 1994 but that isn't stopping them from making more merch, or me from buying it. I don't think Dan, or Phil for that matter, are trying to exploit us by making merch. They like making merch, they have a whole merch company that they're proud of (and recently stated so, in Phil's DML2) so why wouldn't they continue to put out completely not mandatory to purchase, brand-related merch?sapienveneficus wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 10:52 pmYou are not alone.LtrllySusan wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:53 pm Am I the only one who thinks it's been a lot of merch this year? I know merch isn't for everyone, and that's totally fine. I'm not trying to make people want to buy their merch, and I personally don't like everything they put out, or feel the need to buy it. I just think trying to have an excuse for it is a bit odd, all things considered.

I feel a bit sad that Dan’s putting his focus on merch instead of videos (as far as I can tell, but I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes). But I think he’s just catching up and getting ahead on merch. I remember he wanted his own merch as far back as 2014, but didn’t realize that dream until 2018. I also feel reassured by the merch that he plans to make more content in the future. I do have slight side eyes at Dan putting out stationery bc unlike Phil, Dan has never expressed a love for it like he has for fashion. So those items seem a bit exploitative of their school-age audience, whereas I’m definitely here for the glitter backpack!

Sign me up to the a lot of merch with no content but add it’s very over priced to the list. I actually quite like the pencil set but for £9 plus shipping I’ll have to give it a miss. Also for a cropped sweater, £35 is quite steep especially as the normal hoodie is £40! I know they need to make a bit of cash as he’s not doing videos but some of the prices are very steep imo. I’m glad I don’t really need to buy a lot of merch these days

I agree about the tumblr queue but I don’t think they use the insta stories with any intention of making sales. To me that would be too much scheming and I don’t really get that vibe from them. (Of course everyone can have their own opinions, just thought I’d throw my two cents in)CapriciousCrab wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 11:07 pmMy first thought was well, that explains the random tumblr queue today.sapienveneficus wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 10:52 pm Also, the cynic in me can’t help but notice the timing of this drop in relation to Phil’s most recent instastories. so, bit random, but--when I was glancing thru dan's replies earlier, I was *delighted* to see this tweet from Eugene from Try Guys:
I love Bake Off so much, and it has always bummed me out that Americans had to wait so long (thx netflix!) (we usually get everything first so shh its okay). Anyway, I'm watching the first episode right now and there is a Dan contestant & a Phil contestant and I can't believe they wouldn't make a comment about it..it gave me a little giggle.
Yay for Bake Off!!
