I love the Crafts video don't get me wrong, but the phandom ruined it for me with comenting "don't x, craft!" under every single video I watch on Youtube.
But tbh, I hope they join in the dog thing on twitter. I really like it lol

i don't have anything of substance to add to the current discussion but after reading 40+ pages of posts can i just express my undying love for you all?
More stuff happening over at GG.
[offtopic]GG is now a login only site. That's going to make him lose even more people. I'm guessing it's an April Fools joke thing though.

btw, love the song you all are writing
When I found the song it I listened to it on repeat for like a whole day straight. It’s so catchy.
And the whole time, I just kept thinking of Dan, idk. I think the song articulates EXACTLY what he doesn’t ever ever want to do or be. And yet at the same time, ironically, I think Dan does (or at least did) desperately crave attention and has a certain kind of personality that makes him open to doing slightly demeaning things. For example, on DailyBooth, he was pretty willing to post whatever people wanted in order to attract followers (e.g. nakedbooths), and in at least one of the captions he straight-up said he felt like he was prostituting himself. I think he’s made that kind of remark on other occasions as well. So to me, the “YouTube Whore” song describes what very well could have been Dan, had he started YouTube while he was in a more vulnerable/desperate position, without the safety-net of his association with Phil. He’s actually been pretty lucky, in my opinion, and his early/continued success has given him a lot of privileges. He’s able to do things like never spon Audible, bash challenge videos, etc. But at the same time, I bet Dan has plenty of personal “walls of dicks” that he’s sucked. Maybe Phan itself is one. Who knows.
Sorry if this sounds really cynical.
P.S. If anyone ever wants to make a video correlating parts of this song with clips from various popular YouTubers’ videos, I would watch it. I actually think it’d be kind of poignant?
busy being happy~
I love how so many people have joined and all the new posts.
Just wanted to say Hi and please never think what you are going to post is not worthy, or that your English is not good enough, every person that joins this forum is important and we all welcome whatever your thoughts are. And I am always blown away at the people that can write or speak in different languages you inspire me and a lot of times you sound better than I do.
I am 39 and I am going to tatinof by myself my daughter is 15 but she said she didn't want to go because of the phandom. I will be in the 7th row right in the middle and I am so excited. I didn't do a vip and I am kinda happy I can just enjoy going to the show and not have that stomach flippy over thing that happens when I go to meet and greets. So if anyone is going to the Milwaukee show on Sunday just look for the old lady with a big smile on her face proudly wearing her Dan and Phil shirt.
Love and Hugs

i love how many lurkers coming out from the shadows (welcome btw) are calling the gg thread elitist and stuff like that when we were literally the same people posting
we love you too guys
im jk
i actually said something like this a few months ago when the gg thread was going through that one dramatic stage when we all kept fighting each other for some reason (i'm blaming d&p for not giving us things to talk about) and i think most people disagreed, but oh well, maybe it was the mood of the thread at the time idk
i think dan had it extremely easy at the time all thanks to phil, he never had to prove himself and start from zero, he basically had an audience willing to commit as fanbase from the start, and maybe that's still somewhere at the back of his mind making him insecure and making him feel like he has to prove himself
idk, as we know he's pretty self aware and feels the constant need to justify his actions, that might have something to do with it (although i'm pretty sure he doesn't care as much now as he might have a few years ago, closer to 2009, but still)
im a big fan of online april fools day (i can already smell the clever advertising campaigns i'm gonna be discussing in class next week), so i really hope they do something cool, not necessarily a video (irl april fools is v annoying though)

No wonder pew can be on South Park, this song just screams Cartman to me.oqua wrote: My favorite "critique of YouTube culture" song will always be "YouTube Whore" by PewDiePie, personally.
I think the problem with youtube is that this is a very young industry with relatively young group of creator. Some of them are literally kids. The industry itself lacks regulation and moral guidelines, and most of these youtuber are not mature enough to make good decisions.
I believe the nakedbooth not only happened to Dan, but to a lot of other youtubers in a similar way, or still happening. I just feel like for Dan it's more than just bants, it's more like a self mockery after self reflection but in a more subtle, self removal way.
I'm i making sense?
Putting this under spoiler because you might be tired of this subject by now, but I wanted put my two cents into the conversation before we move ondaphenaxa wrote:tbh I don't think he needs to completely rebrand himself, but he needs to stop pigeonhole himself. danisnotonfire is not an evil alterego that prevents Dan to express depth, sincerity or any other emotion than relatable irony. if anyone wanted to share their thoughts on this bit of dan's live show from late last year, i'd really appreciate, i saw it a few weeks ago for the first time & it's been on my mind ever since, like whoa a lot of information & boy does he need a rebranding after the tour
[offtopic]sorry, no idea how to put tumblr videos on here[/offtopic]
It has not always been that way but he has been going more and more one note, further and further in this caricatural presentation of himself. Without completely changing everything and having a like Miley Cyrus explosion, I think he can just ease back to being a bit more himself aka a bit more subtle and just more than deadpan relatable self-deprecation.
It has always been clear the persona on his channel was only a small part of his personality and he has stated it before. It just seems like he forgot it at some point?

I think Dan has always been kind of self aware about how he became popular. One of my favourite videos of all time is How To Befriend Your Favourite Internet Stars, just because it's so self aware, cynical, and calling everyone, including himself out. I mean, times have changed, and this was more relevant then than it is now. But, even back then, he wasn't clueless about how he got to where he was.trashqueen wrote:im jk

Also, about elitist accusations, you guys must be long time lurkers, bc that was us (the old timers), when we had stopped posting, and were mad GG wasn't interesting anymore. That was, like, more than 3 months ago. The new crowd in GG was quite nice

Nah, it was obviously an elitist group of people who had fast internet and unlimited patience and forethought to save their posts on such a buggy site. The rest of us were just mere mortals who weren't worthy.trashqueen wrote:i love how many lurkers coming out from the shadows (welcome btw) are calling the gg thread elitist and stuff like that when we were literally the same people posting

But in reality, I think it was just the reputation of the site that made everyone seem very aggressive or dismissive (even when they weren't), as well as the fact that there was no way to really introduce yourself without interrupting a conversation.
I think I may have agreed with you or I at least said the same opinion at another time. Dan definitely got to skip a few steps thanks to Phil. Starting off with a youtube friend that can promote you to their followers helps, since that is usually the hardest first step to acquire (making friends with popular youtubers that is),especially now that the recommendation system is different, so no hope of getting the front page. That being said, befriending Phil was probably another metaphorical dick that he metaphorically had to suck. Sure, much more metaphorically enjoyable since he got friendship out of it this metaphor is killing me, but it was still a bit along the lines of putting yourself out there in a vunerable way to beg for a collab, a guest spot, or a shout out. For attention that he may not have gotten without Phil. And maybe the nakedbooths were just him attempting to get that first metaphorical dick to metaphorically suck in the first place. Climbing the ladder to success they say.trashqueen wrote:

Now, the real question is whose dick did Phil metaphorically suck to get his first few subscribers?

maybe. I think interrupting a conversation without introducing yourself is the best course of action. It's what I have always done. People aren't likely to find you rude, but they may counter what you say, which is fine.angrymob wrote:Nah, it was obviously an elitist group of people who had fast internet and unlimited patience and forethought to save their posts on such a buggy site. I totally agree with this. I always see Dan as so conflicted, part confident and happy, pleased with what he's creating and where he's going, and part completely insecure and doubting every move. I mean that Tumblr/YouNow video was basically two minutes of him apologizing for being too sincerely appreciative ("soppy" in his words). They'd just finished these two huge accomplishments and I don't know, that's not something I think he should've felt he needed to apologize for. But therein lies the conflict, I guess. What a gemini istgtrashqueen wrote: i think dan had it extremely easy at the time all thanks to phil, he never had to prove himself and start from zero, he basically had an audience willing to commit as fanbase from the start, and maybe that's still somewhere at the back of his mind making him insecure and making him feel like he has to prove himself

I also feel like we dissect Dan so much that I'd really like to crack open Phil that sounded wrong but he doesn't really give us much to go on, does he? Wonder if/when that will change.
