I think people are coming at this from different perspectives because many people class 18 as being as adult.
I personally don't look at this situation and see a child and an adult exchanging flirty tweets I see it as being two legal adults.
In the UK she had legally been able to consent to sexual activity for two years and she'd have left school at 16 and could have been in full time work if she opted not to continue with her education.
Someone who can get a full time job, live on their own, have sex, get married and drink alcohol is an adult to me.

And to put this in perspective we know Phil was not having sex with her as they apparently didn't meet for another few years. It really was just flirty online messages.

haha you misquoted me for jaej. Any the argument you make jaej about the initial power disparity would only be viable if Phil actual took advantage of "said" power over Dan. That was NEVER the case. He never manipulated Dan into liking him or emotionally attached Dan to himself in the aim of having someone to become dependent on him. Dan was an adult of 18 years and yes Phil was his idol but they had talked many times before ever meeting and before ever implying romance. It started with similar interests than skype calls and a friendship that formed not a manipulative power driven relationship.

The situation is harder to phantom now but fan/idol relationships never last as long are seem as healthy as deppy's. Look at the 5SOS scandal, the admitted to hooking up with fans but thats all it was, a one night stand. That could be viewed as a star taking advantage of their fame but this wasn't the case for deppy, if it was they wouldn't still be together.

I feel like I have more to say but I'm sick of saying the same things over and over again. Ill just say that I'm not blind to the action DP make and though I have a preference I would recognize if they did something that I saw as wrong. :sideeye:

i've literally said that it's not about anything being illegal, it's about it being unsafe, and how the older person should know better and be aware of their actions. like it or not, 21/22 year olds have power over 17/18 year olds, they are literally worlds apart, and there doesn't need to be an act of outright abuse for this gap to be there. it's not even necessarily intentional, but there is an imbalance and it will be used. the fact that it exists is uncomfortable, and the romanticisation it gets is horrible. the fact that phil is so consistently found to be linked to this makes me uncomfortable. i apologise entirely for being uncomfortable about people making jokes about yet another dude so seemingly obsessed with vulnerable people, sorry for being personally upset and uncomfortable with the lengths that people go to to deny that these situations can't just be ignored bye every1

To be fair, Phil is a bit immature, so maybe he just got on with people slightly younger than him?

No one was implying that anything would be illegal in any of these situations, but someone out of high school and a recent university graduate are at very different life stages despite the former being a legal adult and it's kind of uncomfortable to some people.
The idea of Phil being controlling (I don't think he actually is) is such a common and romanticized phandom trope, both in fic and just in discussions. It doesn't really make sense why, bc it actually has such disturbing implications? Like there's nothing cute about the concept of Dan being incapable of functioning as a human without Phil there...

Idk if anyone saw this, but I found it really funny for some reason. It was in Phil's likes on Twitter

I think there is a huge cultural barrier between me and you thats why I don't undertand your viewpoint. Here in America it's not taboo for a high school senior to be dating a college student. Half my graduating class including me did that. I think Dan was more mature for his age and not as well understood and Phil was a little young for his age and his interests didn't coincide with people in his age group.

Also about the daddy Phil thing:
I don't know if the daddy kink is understood by you but it is part of BDSM which usually involves the consent of both parties. I'm not implying that Dan and Phil do it but you seemed to see it as an abusive thing which many don't agree with. It's just a form of sex or a kink of sorts with one dominant and one submissive. I know a couple people who participate in it and they are very functional and healthy and only act in this way in the bedroom. UGH this is weird but hopefully you understood my explanation

I actually agree with you, but not completely with jaej, so I think you guys are saying slightly different things. jaej mentioned it based around age, while you mentioned milestones and experiences in life. Where I live 17-22 year olds are often all considered to be at the same stage, depending what area of the country they grew up in. It'd be difficult to tell the difference between the 17 year old uni student and the 22 year old uni student, meanwhile, the 17 year old college student and the 18 year old highschool student often not considered in the same group, because the 17 year is more independant and at a more advance stage of life than the 18 year old.

I assume someone has already mentioned this... but The Phandom romaticizes so many potentially unhealthy behaviours, however they are also the ones that exaggerate a lot them to that point in the first place. For example, Phil most likely just offers critic or a second opinion for Dan's videos, but the Phandom often interprets that as Phil checks over all of Dan's videos and has the final say. The first of which sounds like a helpful friend or good business partner relationship, and the second sounds obssessive and controlling.

While I do understand where you are coming from and agree that suspicious and inappropriate behaviour should be called out the reality is we don't actually have any proof Phil has been romantic with any of these people (including Dan).

And it's not even like he went around online only chatting to the younger people he could potentially get in the pants of, we know he also befriended the younger PJ (I think his also 25 now) online around the same time. (PJ to my knowledge is a straight male so not a potential love interest for Phil.)

And I personally simply don't agree with your assessment that being 18 automatically makes you vulnerable when interacting with someone who is a few years older then you. The fact is people mature differently/have different life experiences. There can be 18 year olds with more life experience then a 21 year old. I really don't think the power imbalance is always there. This is just my opinion of course.

And " uncomfortable with the lengths that people go to to deny that these situations can't just be ignored"
It's not about going to great lengths it's about looking at the facts and the fact is the girl you said was 16 was actually 17/18. And we know they didn't meet in person so there flirtation (if it was even serious) never went beyond messages. When you are implying he was behaving inappropriate these are important facts that need to be acknowledged. Pointing out facts is not going to great lengths to deny a situation it is painting a clearer picture.

So when it comes to Phil being a predator other then Dan we have an 18 year old girl he sent a few flirty tweets to but apparently never meet in person and charlieskies who has actually denied that he was romantic with Phil and who has always spoken highly of him. And no fan from the past is ever came out with their story of how Phil took advantage of them like has happened with other youtubers.

Actually no one who has meet Phil has ever said anything bad about him so saying he was obsessed with vulnerable people because he was open to making friends with people younger then him when he was in his early 20s just seems really unnecessary to me. Like I'm not trying to ignore the evidence Phil is a predictor preying on the vulnerable I genuinely don't think it's there.

With Phil, the implications of him possibly being a closet offender of predatorial, abusive behaviour is strange and surprising to me. In light of Tobuscus and the other incidents of YT'ers using their status to take advantage of others I think it's appropriate to hold up a ight of discretion against public figures and expose abuse for what it is, but in all the years of his online presence I've never heard of one accusation against Phil to suggest this as being remotely true. There's something off about profiling someone with criminal or abusive intentions without any basis other than what bits of his social etiquette we see in videos and what theories are pieced together based on exchanged tweets and projected ideas about what it all means.
It reminds me of behvaioral screening the TSA are said to do when sizing up what passengers could be seen as security threats when many of the things said to be listed as part of their 'redflag traits' could have belonged to anyone suffering from stress or anxiety. It just all seems like a poor litmus test to understanding the motivations behind someone's behaviour, much less attributing them with an accusation that serious.
There's a difference between being cautious and not idolizing public figures to the point of blind adoration-and then outright assumptions that Phil is attracted to vulnerable personality types and/or employs tactics to subvert power in his favor and then leads them on in order to withold that imbalance, unconciously or not.
In terms of fan narratives and off the cuff remarks about how 'adorable' it is that Dan seemingly can't hold his act together without Phil, it's a troublesome exagerration, but in saying this might actually be a reality that Phil enforces, it crosses over into absurd.

Romanticising abusive behaviour is harmful and in the guise of young fans idealizing such traits even in jest when they might not be aware of the serious implications behind it until they're in such a relationship and don't have a basis of comparison to alert them to how unhealthy it is or understand terms of consent when employing submissive and dominant behaviours in the bedroom-yes it's absolutely serious and should be given a second glance of prolonged discussion, but in the context of saying Phil might be an offender, it strikes me as the worst overgeneralization.

yes to everything kuensukki said

17/18 and 20/21 doesn't seem like that much of an age gap to me, at least where i live the life of recently graduated hs students and a uni students isn't that different tbh, and age alone wouldn't be enough for it to be a power imbalance, maybe if the 17/18 yo was completely inexperienced in sex and relationships then yeah, but that can happen with any relationship between young adults

but our university experience is very different to the one people have in the uk and us, most of us live with our parents all the way through uni for example, so yeah it's probably just a cultural thing and idk how relevant my opinion is

i also don't understand why phil having friends who were a few years younger than him come across as predatorial to so many people, it seems completely normal to me, especially because it was people he met online, i have a few friends online that are 16/17 (i'm 20) and i swear i have no ulterior motives, they are just cool people, and my irl friend group also goes from 17 to 23, maybe (probably?) it's just different life experiences idk

You say we are ignoring it but personally I don't think there is a great deal of evidence to back up the argument. We have a girl he sent a few flirty tweets to but apparently never meet in person and charlieskies who has actually denied that he was romantic with Phil and who has always spoken highly of him.

This was brilliantly said. I think because Phil keeps on the private side people automatically assum he must have a secret agenda :tsk: I have known about Phil for a while and stalked fan accounts and other youtubers perceptions on him and they have been nothing but positive. Yes he controls his image but doesn't mean he controls Dans. As angrymob said before his influence on Dan is more of a supporting one and not a image control one. When I write an essay I have my friends proofread it for me, that exactly what Phil does for Dan he doesn't say take this out, he gives him advice/constructive criticism. Dan has a tendency for rambling so having someone there that is not afraid to be honest with you is helpful. Also I think it works both ways but Phil's not as vocal about Dan's help

Another phandom stereotype that is romanticized is vulnerable/ suicidal Dan. That makes me very uncomfortable because they always break down his personality/confidence and beliefs so he is nothing but an insecure desperate version of himself. Dan is mature, successful and for the most part happy so don't paint him as this vulnerable weakling in need of Phil's everlasting support. It only gives more encouragement to the controlling Phil over vulnerable Dan

I mean, I think it's a combination of gaps in life stage and in age, which are both present in the D&P relationship at the start. The two generally go together though ofc there are some exceptions as you mentioned.
And yeah, the issue is not something that Phil actually does but what people for some reason romanticize him as doing (control Dan's entire life bc he's his #daddy or whatever and Dan's just a mess who can't adult without his guidance). There have been too many cases of the type of power imbalances that were present at the start of D&P's relationship being taken advantage of by various YTers for that not be a sensitive subject (to put it very lightly). Jokes that imply that Phil had done that and romanticizing him controlling Dan (for which there is no actual evidence) are disturbing. It's not some slight to Phil for people to point that out.

Have we gone through all the bingo threads in the past 48 hours? I really think we have o.o

They are both positive influences in each other's lives if you ask me. I also think nobody should ever blindly follow a yt or celeb for that matter, but Phil has not ever given evidence of being a predator.

His relationship with Dan did start the way we don't want kids to meet these days (traveling hundreds of miles alone to see a stanger) so Dan was really lucky on that regard. Unfortunately that's just how yt was back then and things have positively changed ever since. Phil remarks always that people should meet safely when the subject is brought up by anyone.

Anyways, I dont think Phil has total control over Dan or viceversa. Dan has made more than enough projects alone to prove that and his tweets/attitude is sometimes soooo different to Phil that you can really see the boy has no filter sometimes.

Same for Phil, the fact he can be comfortable saying he turned down an interview with jlaw and a documentary with the bbc which would have reinforced the brand even more says lots abt his independence.

As for tatinof, they're both obviously involved in all aspects of it. They've both said as much a lot of times.

Sorry if this was just a rehash, I just wanted to point out that they have quite a healthy relationship imo.

I'm from America, and the kind of age difference we are talking about here (Phil and Sarah, though it works for Dan and Phil too) is the equivalent of a high school senior dating a college senior. That's a lot less accepted than a high school senior dating a generic "college student."

I think this discussion comes down to the difference between the specific relationship we are talking about and life stage differences in general. From my point of view, the specifics of the example, namely, it being Phil and twitter interactions, do not hint at an abuse of power at all. However, in general, the age differences between Phil and Sarah usually correspond with two very different life stages (again, this is where specifics are important; I am 22 and know many 18 year olds who are more mature/adult than me) that would prompt me to dig into the specifics of the relationship. And again, we know the specifics, so I think we can rest assured that the relationship in question wasn't an abuse of power.

completely off topic but i think someone mentioned the zalfie boyfriend tag video a few pages ago (or maybe it was another thread idek at this point) so i went to check it out and i'm only 7 minutes in and they have already mentioned: 1 - going on their first 'date' to a ferris wheel 2 - having 6 hours video calls on skype when they first started talking, i'm starting to believe yt couples have some sort of check list

honestly if dan and phil ever come out as a couple i would give them all my life savings to film this video but it's never going to happen

Oh no I missed all the good business discussion and barged into a very messy long-paragraph discussion about a very weird topic of phil being manupilative/controlling :(

So going by the Zalfie-Melix relationship checkbox they're due to get a pug soon, they are even a bit late by now!

I'd also very much like to see doing a bf tag, only because i know they would try their hardest not to be sappy but they would totally fail and that's just too adorable. I love me some soppy cynics in luuuuuv

But speaking of the business side of Phan™ , so many people are of the opinion that when you have amassed the success deppy have it is a good idea to start a business that will be a long term investment for not so rainy days. What do you think should be s next, more long term business venture?

I personally think they could have a future in marketing/advertisement. They clearly understand markets, and while they may not be completely savvy about it, I think they're both wise enough to know when to delegate responsibilities according to people's strengths (so while they first seeked people to produce the UK TATINOF, they felt like they could do some of the things by themselves for TATINOF USA because they've learned how to)

I just watched it, and say what you want individually about Alfie and Zoe as YouTubers, but they seem like a sweet couple. As you mentioned, the parallels are pretty uncanny, right down to the lovesick puppy eyes Zoe directs at Alfie ‎(mirroring the famous 'Heart Eyes Howell' look.) Not saying this proves anything, I just thought it was amusing.

I thought he was 21 and she was 19? daichii I was just thinking about the board. We always come full circle to this and the conclusion is always the same  I think people use the power difference to justify why Dan is still with Phil after all this time and all his other countless options. The only conclusion is that Phil is manipulating him muahhaha...... :|

Deppy need to start posting asap or give us something other than Phil's abysmal driving to gossip about

[offtopic]It just occurred to me, Youtuber behavior dictates that it's totally absolutely normal to film absolutely every aspect of your life so...I wonder how many Youtuber sex tapes there are, and moreso how have none of them ever leaked? I wonder if there's a dodgy copy of Hangover 3 sitting on a decorated shelf that holds within a home-burned copy of a DVD featuring an explicit and extensive sexual Deppy session. I should go to sleep.[/offtopic]

Dan's jeans usually has really low crotch so there are plenty of dick space i would imagine. So we can't really tell. And Phil I've seen some nice bulge from him couple of times.

I personally believe, which is based on my completely untested unscientific theory, from their personalities, that Dan doesn't seem to have a D that is too big nor too small, and Phil are more likely to have a big D.

honestly if dan and phil ever come out as a couple i would give them all my life savings to film this video but it's never going to happen
I would not be surprised if most youtbers couple look at as rel goals ;)

lol i've thought about this before, especially because many youtubers live with cameras and lights set up pointing to their beds (well maybe some tidy people would put them away after filming, i know i wouldn't), if any of them where into that it would require very little effort...
