It's also evident that this is a British game because in America the words "Law" and "War" definitely do not rhyme at all.

I am super late to the party but this video was adorable. All my favorite parts have already been mentioned so just imagine I've thanks'ed buttoned all of you. I loved all their interactions but I still sometimes just want to punch Phil in the shoulder and scream ITS OK TO MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH DAN AND/OR TOUCH HIM WITH MORE THAN JUST A FINGER but because of this
bedhead91 wrote:I think he's just hyper-aware of how much people freak out if they so much as lay a finger on each other and doesn't want to be accused of soft homo fanservice or ''giving people the wrong idea.'' It doesn't take much with the Phandom tbh..I saw someone on the video who commented ''OMG PHIL TOUCHED DAN'S ARM'' and I wanted to break things.
I try to keep my chill. Also, as a fellow former PATD fandom member,
bedhead91 wrote: I have never been in a fandom with so little chill, and I was a Panic! at the Disco fan as a teenager (to this day, people refuse to let go of their ''Ryden was real'' conspiracy theories.)
is 100% accurate.

Literally just spent five minutes saying law and war over and over and nothing makes sense. When I first heard it I was like that doesn't rhyme but it kinda does. I think it's just a bad example.

They do rhyme in British English, but not in American English. The main reason is that in American English, the "r" at the end of "war" is pronounced, whereas in British English, it is not. Also, in many dialects of American English, the vowel (the "a" sound) in "war" is different from the vowel in "law," but in some dialects of American English, it's the same. I could transcribe the words in IPA (a phonetic alphabet) if you like, but that usually bores people lol. But I love talking about this stuff so let me know if you're interested.

(Also, obviously there are many other dialects of English besides "American" and "British," and even those two categories have many sub-categories, but I focused on them because they seemed to be the varieties in question here.)

eh, it was ok?

a lot less awkward than i was anticipating from the NWW chemistry, but then again kind of expected because Phil was in control and i knew he'd put a lot of structure in place and feel more comfortable reigning in what he didn't like from the other's.I still had to pause it quite a few times though from second-hand embarrassment. i don't think i laughed out loud more than once. i was impressed with Louise's speed, but i can't handle Dan's social skills sometimes. they remind me too much of my own. he drags a moment on just that fraction too long, and is never entirely comfortable or relaxed. it's like reliving video of myself being hyper with other people, and that isn't that enjoyable for me. (felt the same way during the restaurant story vid).

i liked agario better this week but i think that just comes down to personal taste. neither style of video is objectively better than the other.

the video hinting and then twitter hinting afterwards from Dan is something else entirely though. i'm getting that itchy, restless feeling from him again lately. he's pushing and i'm not even sure he knows why or what he's trying to achieve. it's fascinating to watch but i hope it doesn't backfire, or swing the other way.

edit: i'm confused, do people with rhotic accents not 'hear' non-rhotic pronunciation? not impossible i guess, but a bit more surprising coming from fans who've probably listened to literally hours of these two guys speaking in that accent

jk (but no, really)

i loved the video, didn't say anything about it because i was late and everything was already said, i love louise's chemistry with both of them, i think they all slightly socially inept in different ways and that's what makes it work

I have no idea; I feel like the quintessential trait of a British accent is that they don't pronounce those r's at the end of words.

But it amuses me to no end when British people say, "he used to pronounce it as barth, with the hidden r"...as though this is some kind of universal way of expressing those sounds, when in reality, such a statement comes across as gibberish to someone with a rhotic accent. And along the same lines, there's the phenomenon of the "linking r." So if those with non-rhotic accents "hear" an r where there isn't one, maybe it works in reverse too? Like people with rhotic accents feel like they can tell that there's a hidden r at the end of the word when Deppy/Louise say "war," so it seems inconceivable that it could be interpreted to rhyme with "law." I'm not sure if I'm making sense.

You've lost me. I thought British accents tended to be non-rhotic? Am I reading everything you're saying backwards? :?

The only thing I've learnt is that I have a non-rhotic accent, which apparently makes sense because of where I am from.

No no you're totally right, rhotic pronounces the r and non-rhotic doesn't. I'm not sure how I managed to switch them, but I stayed up all night last night and I haven't slept today and it's 10:20 pm...so I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. I'm going to edit my post. Lol, forgive the mixup.

oqua yeah it's been too long since i did intro linguistics at uni but you hear only what you're used to. i think US media being extremely prolific in countries with non-rhotic accents but the reverse not being the case could have something to do with it. as in even very small children listen to hours of the american accent through movies and tv shows (cough Frozen cough), but most american children do not listen to non-rhotic accents every single day that contrast with their own.

i feel bad not commenting much on the video itself- Phil sucking his bottom lip in at 6.29 in response to Dan's JT insistence was familiar. he does that with his mouth after some blatant innuendo in other videos. i agree with alittledizzy that Dan follows Phil's boundaries closely, but i also think he's pushing on them a little bit when he suspects they're shifting. only 18 months after the Taylor Lautner moment, take your time Dan :D

lol spider. i think mine have been since lobster boy last year. but relationship hinting is a bit different and more recent, so i might have to borrow your stapler.

i'm surprised there haven't been any objectifying comments on the reason behind Phil's inability to close his legs. manspreading definitely, but idb has gotten all respectful since leaving gg. lol

Ok, this is going to drive me bananas. (and is going rather off topic, but whatchagonnado)

I've recorded myself saying the line. I now demand that all of you in assorted countries do the same so we can compare.

Also as I haven't talked about it yet, loved the video, will rewatch a lot for sure! Obama Llama was already on my list of games to buy, but this definitely confirmed it's spot at the top of the list it looks hilarious!

Yes! Pronunciation talk! Although I'm late to the party, as usual

I really like how Dan (and I think Phil does it too?) uses a linking /r/ inside words when the sound is not actually there, like when he says "drawring" instead of "drawing".

As someone who was born in England, grew up in Australia, and now lives in America, I'm so confused by all this pronunciation stuff you have no idea. I have no idea how anything is supposed to sound any more. I use "zee" and "zed" interchangeably at this point.

Although, America, I will never understand how you think "Erin" and "Aaron" sound the same.

he's definitely pushing boundaries and i'm in a weird place of loving it and hating it. love it because let's be honest: , hate it because it's a tease. whether or not all this weird hinting comes to anything, it's like an endless cliff-hanger and the slow burn is so real.

also - i feel like this might come out wrong - but... part of why i love the phandom so much is because D&P know literally everything that's said/done - dan, in particular. and i love when he plays with that or makes references to it, but the minute he mentioned ~editing tips~ in his 2015 meme video, he broke some sort of 5th wall (the phan dam? heh) and has touched on the shipping aspect a lot more. i don't know how to feel about this. he's milking it, but like... damn, daniel. (sorry.) at least, when that topic was generally avoided, i could live in my there-will-never-be-closure, "peaceful" reality and now it's just... well. the dam is crumbling and i don't know how i feel about it. i'm sorry if this makes no sense.

ETA: To add to the pronunciation topic... As an American, I can never quite get over how Phil says "says" when describing how to play the 7 Second Challenge, with that long A. "You have to do whatever the other person SAYS." Bless.

I've been getting this vibe from his interactions lately that he's just...really really over it. In several of the most recent videos he comes across as one big sarcastic sigh that's faking a smile. Not that he's ever been a terribly chipper guy, but the live shows, the tweets, the replies, the videos, he seems very done with everyone's shit all the time. (not 100% of the time, mind you, just overall)
