Imo, he has so, so much untapped potential with his linguistics degree, post production masters, his darker sense of humour and appreciation of dark humour(?) etc (maybe I’m biased lol bc I love dark humour but nevertheless)
Tap into his inner Science-Of-Sleep Stéphane that he self-identified with and he could really go somewhere amazing. The way he does interpret things, shown over the past years, I think is incredibly intriguing, he just never delves into it
And for the love of god, make a video about linguistics (biased again lol)
If he were to just step up the level of maturity/intellectualism, even just a bit, I’d cry. In saying this though, I do understand that he does aim for an age level lower than mine, but I feel like he could still aim at relatively the same age group, manipulating the content so it still an amazingphil production, whilst getting more depth in there? Or maybe not lol
As for the creepy dolls video there definitely was a count freeze, I went back a few times over a 2 day period after and the number stayed the same 2 days later.

Saaaaaame.
Honestly Phil can't aim for the young audience like he does now forever, people will eventually find it creepy that a 30 year old makes videos like that and has a Twitter header that says Rawr. A while ago there was already Tumblr post going around that actually kinda bashed him for that stuff.

I would be up for Phil to do some rebranding and I'm hoping that it is going to happen after the tour. Though I'm not convinced at all that it is actually going to happen.
I noticed the count freeze when I watched the video again the next day, and it was still at the same number as the night before. Just kind of unprofessional on Youtube's part that it took so long to fix and that the views they got during that time just got lost. If I had a channel, I would not have been pleased about that.

let's hope after the tour he starts going in this direction, at least the tour provides a good divisor for that, I really hope they take the chance to change, even if it's gradually.

bit late to the party but, as someone who has recently finished uni and no longer needs this kind of advice, i enjoyed the video more than i thought i would. the jokes made me laugh out loud despite the 'serious' exam talk in between being very boring imo i pretty much zoned out at those points .
just happy that he's doing good sketches again, happy for content, happy happy happy
i'm sorry i just came back from watching busted at the o2 and i am a big trashcan of happiness also i had too many cocktails so slightly intoxicated
also YES to the phil re-branding.
it wasn't until recently that i subscribed and properly watched all of phil's videos, as i found the whole 'weird' 'rawr' 'lions' 'lolzor' stuff cringey, i was a charlie mcdonnel/dan fangirl for a long time in my teens and never saw the appeal of phils vids i'm sorry for being a twonk but in the last few months i've watched pretty much all his vids and got my boyfriend into them too, and he prefers them to dan's.
i think his persona can be off-putting to the more serious minded, but his lovable nature, humour and creativity shines through after you get used to it

I didn't hate the video but it's not one that will ever be getting a second watch. As someone else said (sorry can't be bothered to go back and look who) I'd have preferred a more sarcastic what not to do video.
Regarding the water bottle I don't think it's proof of anything as it's not that unusual to have crap on both your bed side tables but that being said I'd still have expected Dan to remove it before filming to avoid it becoming an issue.
Dan knows their fanbase (we analyse what is reflecting in their eyes for goodness sakes) so I'd have expected that before shooting anything he'd assess what is visible in the background and remove anything that could raise any questions (even if their is a perfectly reasonable explanation). Having two bed side tables look like they are in use is a fairly easy flag to spot and remove.
Catallena wrote:
Phil's subscriber number don't nearly match his views either. Now this isn't a rare thing among YouTubers, but it's usually time to start worrying if your subs grow (or worse; stabilize...which is kinda what Phil's sub count is doing I think?) but your views decrease. Phil's video CREEPY DOLL WATCHES ME SLEEP still hasn't broken 1m views. I dunno what's going with that one, did people hate it that much or are the views frozen? His video with Louise and Dan has broken 1m, but I'm a bit concerned about whether he's only able to get good views when someone else (mostly Dan) is featured. Doesn't look good for potential advertisers either. Phil has lasted on the platform far longer than many others and I hope he'll be able to go on for mant more years, but if I were Phil I'd start worrying rn. Dan might want that rebranding, Phil NEEDS it.
Phil hit 3million around October and now his at around 3.5million so he has gained around 500000 subs in around half a year which actually is a fairly steady growth rate so his not stabilizing yet. (While Dan's growth rate is higher I don't think it's been much higher in this period maybe somewhere between 600000-700000).
As for Phil's viewing figures, while they do seem to be dropping (along with Dan's) his numbers still don't seem that bad to me, there are youtubers with 5mil + subs that don't seem to hit a million with every video whereas Phil can usually consistently manage that (the doll one isn't there yet it's not that far off either).
I don't think either Dan or Phil need to worry too much at the moment.
That being said I really really wouldn't mind Phil rebranding... sadly I don't see it happening anytime soon.

off topic but: I keep up with the Sherlock fandom on tumblr and they're so much like us it's hilarious, the lack of content generates so many discussions it's not even funny, and it's easy (by that I mean: people dig more when they have more time in between things to watch) to talk bad about something and find a whole list of defects and bad decisions when you have time and content just to turn around, watch something new that's given to us and forget all about it until next time that people go weeks without new content

Yes, please! I hope he does start to "age" his content, or he will start to look a little creepy. He doesn't have to start bringing strippers on and swearing all over the place, just make content that he would like to watch. Don't they always say make content you want to watch? I can't imagine he is seeking out content like his from other people. I don't know what he is into, but I doubt it is the majority of his stuff. Don't get me wrong I love Phil and I am just a bit older than him and watch his stuff. But I watch it because it is him, not the content. I enjoy his vids but they are not specifically what I would seek out.
Also side note, did anyone else see that Louise said she was starting to rebrand herself too? She said she wanted to be more herself on her channel. She swears a lot, and has a dirty sense of humor. I was all for that as well. I am a fan of hers for multiple reasons but if she starts acting less prim and proper I will like it even more.

I already have friends who used to like Phil, but now find him creepy for being so(?) old but stuck inside the manifestation of a man-child. It makes me a bit sad, because I've always been partial to him so I'm mostly just a bit biased/blind to it all, but I still totally get where they're coming from.
It's weird as someone who's watched him for the past 6-ish years, I was going through my own scene/geeky/random phases which is probably why I was initially drawn to him/related to him. Now that I've grown out of those phases myself, sometimes I look at him and it's like he never did and he's still stuck back there.
Still though, as always.

I really don't get where people pull 'man-child' from with Phil's content. Making content suitable for all ages is not synonymous with making content for children. Phil's vlogs aren't aimed at kids. Stories about losing a contact lens on the train, creepy dolls in a room he's staying in on holiday, favorites videos, staying up all night - those aren't for kids. They're just not so off-color that they'd be inappropriate if they were playing with a kid in the room. Lack of crudeness is not a reflection of immaturity, it's just a career choice.
I'm also not sure where the idea that it's creepy for an adult to make all-ages content comes from, either. Children's tv show presenters aren't typically kids. Children's content is written, created, and executed by adults and generally those people aren't considered sad or creepy, so even if he were to suddenly make his channel for children it still wouldn't actually be a negative reflection on him. He is a professional entertainer.

I think many would agree that his personality and persona are two different things. What I think people want to see is a change in his persona to reflect his actual personality a bit better.
Just to clarify, I'm not saying his current persona doesn't reflect any of his true personality because I believe it does, but I agree with those that say he's holding back a little bit.
Also, this person clearly doesn't care:
Proof they're a Dan stan:

i liked the video and laughed lots but also im drunk and have an exam on 30 hours that i haven't studied for at all and im literally fucked if i don't get an A so idk
phils definitely childish tho. 1) he wasn't like that before, you can't say it's just naturally the way he is, 2) he literally produces as much content as possible showing himself as a CHILD to keep up this innocent smol bean child friendly image. unlike a lot of people's childhood videos, he's literally a baby in his so you can't risk seeing him as a real person, the childhood story things are so associated with him that some people act like he could sue others for talking about their childhoods, his entire 'weird' persona relies on liking things made for children while he makes jokes about anyone doing anything actually out of the ordinary, 3) it's so baaaaad just because you like it doesn't make you the target audience, it's geared for a young audience who think he and themselves are even younger, adults liking things made for children doesn't make them for all people
but i only find it creepy when he very deliberately drops innuendoes in then makes a face at the camera and is like "what?? i don't know what im saying omg what are you talking about was that a fisting joke omg what's fisting" which he does a lot sooo

I just... completely disagree that his content is made for children. I don't get that impression at all, I wouldn't call any of his content for children. Drawing from your own past for content doesn't equate to being 'for kids' for me. But to explain any more would just be repeating myself. We watch the same content and just have totally different takes on it.

but his reasoning for avoiding that stuff is to be suitable for children. he's not a very coarse person in general, he doesn't need to swear to need be childish, but he's said himself that aspects are catered towards children

thanks for putting into words what i've always thought abt this.
imo acting literally like a child that has not happened since 2013 I belive?
Like I can't imagine phil making a vid abt his chat logs, weird things he thought as a child or even one with him jumping in his bed and being super hyped like he used to and that's when I realize his content has changed.
Even when he made the diary vid, he just read it. I feel like old 2012-2013 phil would have acted it out
@jaej being aware that children watch him and not swearing due to it is not the same as making content for children, it's just being considerate of a large part of his audience
adults unwrapping kinder eggs now that's content for children (yeah that exists, my 3 yr old cousin loves that shit)

I'm with you thinking that he doesn't make children's content, I find that they are for all-ages too, I'm sorry if what I said somewhat implies that, I meant to say is that I, like so many people, can see the potential in him to do so much more but not while he's 'stuck' with only this side of him. You get what I mean? it's late, english is hard, lol
I for one, wouldn't mind if he kept making videos like this but I fear that he may become irrelevant if he keeps to just that. (which in itself is 1000% better than 'adults' that try to keep themselves relevant by doing challenges and swearing all over the place).
I really want to see him put all his ability to use and let us a little more inside his fascinating mind.
Also, something that I feel like it needs to be addressed is that phil's videos have uniqueness-philness to them that sometimes is jarring to new people, like, you need a three or more videos to 'get' him and his personality to the extent that you'll understand why he makes the jokes that he makes and the way he sees things in his unique way (and love it), some people don't give youtubers that chance, they watch one video and if it's not what they identify with they leave.
I believe that making a few different videos with still his unique way but in a way that we can see more of his intelectual and creative side (not that we don't see it now, I just want more) could bring him more subscribers and attention and I'm all for that.
I really really hope I'm making sense, anyone with the same opinion can help me word it better?

I really dont see much criticism on dans persona other than the usual "he is so LOUD". Is it just his loudness?? They both have their personas but if we have to choose which one overuses (is this a word its 4am sorry) i would say hands down dan.
is dinof reflecting dans actual personality better???
why do i feel like some people dislike the fact that phil has a persona (not the actual persona) but refuse to acknowledge that dan has an ugly persona too? not directed to you blueapple_x
also another difference in their sub counts: Phil content is not aimed at teenager(yt demographic) like dan. I think kids and adults can enjoy phils content more than teens. (generalization sorry but i hope you get what i mean) I think its the fact that he is not being that "serious" and he doesnt give the "substance" so many want. Everyone in their teens wants to be taken seriously its like seeking validation through youtube . You cant possibly watch sth that is just fun/silly entertainment you need sth "deep" and fake "important" to make you feel smart and intellectual .The fact that they search for it on youtube of all places is a joke..
kids dont think like that and adults get over it at some point and they chill

edit: wait let me rephrase. I like Phil's personality and don't want him to change it.
I think many would agree that his personality and persona are two different things. What I think people want to see is a change in his persona to reflect his actual personality a bit better.

I agree completely, I guess I thought his persona seemed very true to his real personality, but then again I've been absent in the deeper phandom lately that I've missed a lot of things.
