I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but seriously, it doesn't look like it says Howell, James, or any variation of Dan's legal middle and/or surnames....

Like I'm SERIOUSLY trying to give him an out. I even contemplated that it could say "Dil Howlter." It doesn't even look like that. The first part seems to be "Dan." The second part seems to be "Lester."

If the dream journal part of TABINOF is believed to be accurate and true, then he signed it as Howell in the beginning of the book, and in part of the audio book he confirms he received the journal when he was 9. That doesn't necessarily mean he wrote his name in that journal when he was 9, could've been a lot later obviously but eh, for what it's worth I guess.

I am pretty sure Dan's surname is Howell because that is what he registers to vote but why did he cover his name in that passport?

Remember recently Dan said something about using a star as a dot in his signature on his passport that got his mother angry? Did I imagine that? Can someone confirm?

I obviously don't believe Dan's parents were abusive, but is it possible that he actually went through a period of being extremely angry at / borderline estranged from them at the time when he wrote these rules and therefore used some other name, like his grandparents' surname or something? PLEASE NOTE: I am like 100% sure he was never that angry at his parents. Idek what I'm talking about anymore.

And I remember YouTube comments were theorizing that it was because he actually said "Lester," or wanted to. I remembered what I was thinking of. It's the second PINOF, and it's actually Phil who pauses. The question asks him to choose a surname, and he starts to say something then cuts himself off, and pauses for awhile, before eventually saying, "Striker."

But, in searching for it, I uncovered this moment from their Seven Second Challenge thing with PewDiePie. At 2:40, Dan says to Phil, "What's my name?" And Phil literally says nothing for six seconds before going, "Daniel....James....Howell?"

Yes. But this is him identifying his last name as Howell in something, which would be evidence that it was his real last name at the time of writing in that journal. Unless this part of TABINOF was fabricated and written from scratch all at once just for the book. Which is possible but seems like a lot of work for one part of a content-dense book

I do not believe they were actually married in 2012, and I'm pretty sure they're still not actually married. But the idea that Dan would imagine they were is...kind of plausible. Either that or they signed it as a total joke because lolzor they're platonic and wouldn't it be hilarious to do? Idk. I could imagine jokingly signing a list of domestic rules with my platonic roommate's last name...maybe...if I had a different sense of humor. (??) I'm trying so hard to not get swept away by #pheels, can you tell?

Is it possible he made the "h" in "Howell" lowercase? That could look like a capital "L." It doesn't explain the letters after the mid-word tall letter, or the fact that it looks like only one letter with a cross, not a double-l.

I have nothing to add to the surname discussion - other than I can now see Lester so clearly, you've all ruined my life - but I do think the third word in 6 might be 'begin(,)'. And while I agree that it doesn't necessarily seem to be in quotes from the first mark, the second possible quotation mark is quite distinct, and I'm not sure what it is otherwise?

Having gone from seeing nothing in Dan's chicken scratch to my brain possibly making up words to give me some kind of satisfaction I'm now mostly back to seeing nothing though, sadly!

also as daft as those PINOF overreactions to Phil's surname pause may have been that actually inspired my first fic! Good times... Probably for the best that that's been lost!

I figured that Dan's handwriting is just so bad it makes the tall letters look small because he just scribbles at the end. Plus signatures don't even need to be your real name or look anything like your real name. When I sign the first letter of my name it looks nothing like its supposed to because I changed it to make it easy to sign.
