Dan's RYC reached over a million views in under 24 hours. Though it's been so long since he uploaded that I have no idea what's actually normal for him to compare this to.. but it's still really good though. I wonder if it might be on it's way to become one of Dan's most watched videos?

The video is growing on me (not that I disliked it, I just like it more and more now) and I even rewatched a bunch of times... the only DINOF I did that with in recent memory was the anime one and I was kinda over that after two replays. The cringe at the rapping isn't as bad when you already know what's coming

OK, I've watched it drunk, i've watched it sober and I've watched it after a tonne of caffeine and...I still hate it.
Now, I'm no danphil333. I LOVE Dan. I occasionally fantasize about ditching my family and moving back to England so I can be closer to him. I only really watch Phil because he's such a big part of Dan's life. (not really true any more, i've grown to love Phil too. But I'll always be a Dangirl first)
I just can't see how it is self aware or groundbreaking. To me it wasn't really an honest "roast yourself". It just sounds like Dan reciting a list of his most frequent hate comments. He knows what we think. He can read. He said in the description that he doesn't necessarily believe or agree with any of it.

It also does not in any way convey someone’s actual opinion on something or the truth. This whole thing is a joke where I just desperately attempt to make things rhyme, so if anyone tries to take any of it seriously in any way I'll come to your house and deactivate you.

The only bit that sounded like it was a genuine Dan thought, rather than just saying what he knows his audience think, was:

you procrastinate making videos, cause being judged is scary? - ooh
you’re so close to being forgotten, the hate’s imaginary - woah

His rapping was awful too. He just doesn't have the voice or the accent for it (btw I have almost the exact same accent as him. I have never attempted to rap. Just saying.) and the way he butchered the lyrics to make them rhyme was agonizing.
tl:dr As much as I love Dan, imo the video sucked.

Day after thoughts: Dan didn't really roast himself that much. He roasted his audience definitely. He lit didn't roast himself at all with the sexuality thing. All he said is that people try to fit him in a box. I saw a more brutal roast floating around Twitter that says smthg like ' you mention sexuality so people will think that you're gay'. Of course it's not exactly true but it kinda is. People love those sexuality mentions. And the ship criticism was completely turned outwards toward the audience; it was almost defensive. He didn't say anything about his role in the ship

i have to admit i thought the roast video was a bad idea and was ready to cringe and hate it but dan did well i think there were so many little things to pay attention to. ngl i watched the whole thing with half the speed a few times and had to pause to savor the closeups and annotations his rapping skills (that "problematic" pronunciation ) and the "music" in the background is questionable but overall i enjoyed immensely and had to laugh and smile and rewatch
maybe danphil333 and bluntedclaws can collab and make a diss of the roast

I would disagree. sexuality/relationship bits aside, he said he overeats, is lazy, is a disappointment to his family etc. Thats definitely roasting.of course if your comments were specific to the sexuality bits then don't mind me

What you want isn't really the point of the Roast Yourself Challenge though. The original point of it is looking at yourself like you're another person and then roast yourself like they would. A person who doesn't know you will always comment on the image presented on YouTube. And it's also to reflect on the criticism you get instead of just going on about haterzzz (like 99% of creators tend to do) before coming for someone else.

You can debate on how much the second part even applies to Dan (he never bashes on other YouTubers and seems pretty self aware compared to many others) but he definitely did the first part right. That DINOF style part really did overpower, but I do think he tried to find a balance between that and getting a bit more personal unlike what most people did in their versions. And I liked that a lot because RYC's just get better that way. I can see why the empowerment of the DINOF brand might make this video a miss for other people though. But personal criticism is simply not the point of the whole thing.

I still want a video of Dan's audience roasting him. Last night when people were waiting for the upload and uncertain about whether it would even happen, the phandom was hilarious on social media. I can dream.

I also 1000% agree with the end of your post; to me it seems like Dan's been pandering to shippers a bit but I can't help thinking how much their personal relationship must have been affected. He really drove that point home back in the day, and that bitterness doesn't just go away.

Roast yourself videos basically ARE acknowledging what your audience says about you (whether or not it’s true is irrelevant) coupled with adding in a few disses about yourself. Every single one I’ve seen has done that. Dan was just stating "the obvious" in his description to play the safe route so we don't analyze every single thing imo**. I’m not sure how many of you have watched other people’s RYC, or even Ryan Higa’s (the guy who started it all) but that’s what he did and other people followed suit. I’d say Dan did a pretty good job at doing both things but I guess that’s subjective. But I definitely believe he roasted himself, his audience, the youtube community/culture and the challenge itself.

**Btw I’m not saying that I think his video didn’t contain the absolute truth at some parts (about what he thought of himself and what others think of him) because it definitely did, I’m just saying that “the obvious” bit he stated in his description was that it was all in good fun and it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they think….he just worded it very absolutely to play it safe but we all know the shade being thrown contains some real shit.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Especially in relation to Cat (assuming that friendship is holding strong post-Vidcon 2016). She's straight up called Dan "straight" before and we're all well aware how poorly she handles hiding whatever relationship they have going on. How are people like her meant to ...er... "perform" around them now? In front of a camera, that is. Like, is anyone of that friend-caliber (that's a weird concept) allowed to make a detailed comment on this? Is Louise allowed to be a bit more relaxed when vlogging them? I'm aware they're still keeping their relationship hush-hush, but... Well, mostly I'm just curious to see how Cat would act around them after this.
