I would also love to know if Dan watched the Bo Burnham special. Bo has such an ambivalent relationship to creating and to audience and to himself. It's a hard thing to watch, but also brilliant.

I like the selfie from the new place. They look tired but happy. I really like the grey of the couch; it looks cozy. This space looks like it might be open plan so perhaps top of stairs? marked any details of interest I noticed. Anyone notice anything I didn't?

So I'm actually thinking that's a mirror at the top of the image rather than further space. The plant is reflected.

Yeah I don’t see any of the things you have pointed out. A sofa or oven? The photo was taken in the room they have showed us. The thing you see as an oven is storage. If someone can post the flipped version of this photo (you can easily see it’s the same room once it’s flipped) and the screen shot in the hair cut video you can see it’s the same room. I have the photos but have no idea how to post them

Merch- I like the design on the bag. I rarely buy any merch from them so I won’t be getting anything this time

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a bit weird that he released merch about a self help book? Probably. But like.. a hoodie with the book’s title on the front and the introduction from the trailer on the back? I don’t like the word ‘cringe’ but, yeah.

Anyway the sun/moon design is kinda cute, I wish he used ONLY that for his merch. I haven’t bough dnp merch in years but the tote bag would have interested me if it didn’t have the book title written on one side.

Dan's email to go with the merch drop:
Hello everyone.

It's been almost two weeks since my mind-child was released into the wild. I will be honest, even after years of being way too TMI online, I was nervous to release this book. Not just because of all the personal information and embarrassing admissions padding the pages (which was there in much thiccness), but because I wanted this book to sincerely help people in a way I wish could have been there for me.

Seeing all the responses so far, that this book has already helped people, taught them things about how their minds work and how the tips and exercises are making them feel better ..makes me feel great. All the creativity in the community too, from art, to tiny book earrings, make tiny tears start to form in the corner of my eyes.

To celebrate the launch, for anyone like me who loves having a piece of a book they love literally close to their chest and around their house (I recently realised exactly how too much book merch I have in various boxes), we have created an amazingly cool looking new merch collection inspired by the words and illustrations featured in This Night! It can be a call to action (perhaps a divine sign) for anyone walking around seeing your t-shirt to go sort their life out ..or if you're like me, maybe just a reminder for yourself.

T-Shirt & Hoodie
A black (obviously) logo t-shirt and big comfy hoodie featuring my intro piece in a retro print on the reverse! Might cause anyone reading your back to have an existential crisis if it touches their soul, but that's okay you can just throw the book at them.

Tote Bag
A big, sturdy and practical tote bag - featuring the title print inspiring moon and sunlight illustration! Verified deep enough to carry enough books to be bad for your shoulder.

Black and Gold Mug
Feel the light with every sip. A black and gold mug, with the title and illustration. Good for looking at a positive mantra to start your day while shoving that warm drink in your mouth.

Be Your Own Light Print
You have the power. An affirmation and reminder that you will get through the night in A3 matte black print with metallic foil detailing! I might stick this on the ceiling above my bed so I can't escape the truth.

These words mean a lot to me and it makes me proud that they have to so many of you too. I hope this book has a legacy in your life and whether someone compliments you for the words on your back or that cool illustration on your bag, that a little bit of my message of hope can insidiously trickle through the world until everyone's just a little bit happier.

Thank you for all your support for this strangely sincere project of mine.

Posters with quotes or the graphics is cute and kinda a less cringe Live Laugh Love type motivational poster vibe, but yes I agree on having it on wearable clothes isn’t my cup of tea. Then again I can’t think of any wearable merch I like from any artists/creator because they always feel a bit juvenile in design or in your face so maybe I’m just anti merch in general.

I would have loved a simple tshirt with the moon art on the top left pocket and leave it at that, but then I guess artists view merch as a walking free advertisement for the creator so subtle defeats the purpose.

Dan is threatening us with content.
The merch looks fine. If I'd be anything it would probably be the mug. The sun and moon thing is really cute, to the point where it feels very at odds with Dan's usual aesthetic choices. Maybe there's hope for him yet. I can't unsee how similar it is to the logo of a kpop group I like.

See some people on Twitter saying IRL no longer ships to their country. Is this a Brexit thing?

Yeah, not into this collection either but I don’t think I’ve ever bought solo Dan merch before. His stuff isn’t really my taste and even though I’m not usually a fan of text as a design, You Will Get Through This Night is a bit much. Agreed that the sun/moon design is really cute though, I would have loved if he’d focused on that instead of the in your face title print.

I agree on the stick to the drawings less of the words.

What this reminded me of though is, I only knew of dan cos I subbed to Phil. In 2008 I'm following Phil, but alongside I followed this other dude Josh. He has his huge youtube group and they have their merch but, he has his own separate brand under a different branding and, call me crazy, but does this not give you more Dan vibes than Dan's merch https://zrk.london

The subtlety of this is much nicer that the large white stock font on black Dan seems to be so fond of. I might even consider buying a YWGTTN tee or hoodie if it was smaller black embroidered text on black fabric without the trailer text on the back.

Someone was talking a few weeks ago about how Dan's tweets get more traction despite being on the side of generic relatability while Phil's get less even though he is putting out more personal, non-traditional tweets. I feel like it's the same with merch. Phil does collabs with designers to make more unique, distinctly Phil merch while Dan's is more generic. I get that Dan's aesthetic is monochromatic minimalism but surely something can be done to make it less 'text in a font from word slapped on a black object of choice'. I'd be interested to see how their individual merch sales compare to each other.

Edit: unrelated but while I'm thinking of it, here is a screen shot of the room from the hair cutting vid for comparison with the joint moving selfie:

I get you, I love all the ideas, the execution isn't my fave. Phil's robots hoodie would be better darker, Dan's book artwork would have been great as a package of temporary tattoos, the tote with the imagine only etc.

On another vibe I saw someone on tumblr say that they live near dip's new home and honestly, I knew where their 2 apt's were as soon as Phil tweeted that picture of where they didn't rent. because with context I realised me and mr fc's assistant had viewed a few places there and the place they didn't rent is on the opposite corner to the fancy duplex they did rent, So I hope the tumblr person enjoys being stressed as fuck all the time!

I've just read you YWGTTN reviews!! Awesome. Can I quote here from there and comment? Or should I write there? I haven't read the book (nor will I, most likely).

I agree with all of you in regards of the merch. Plus, I am too sensitive, but "You will get through this night" to me evokes depressing thoughts rather than positive ones, so I would never gift merch like that to someone I care for, nor would want for anyone to be randomly reminded that yesterday night you had fallen into the depression hole or something like that.

Feel free to respond to the reviews on the book thread however you like! Quoting from the book thread and commenting on it in the main thread is a great way to mix it up.

My grumpy merch opinion: it's fascinating to me that reaction to Dan's merch is always 90% negative. He knows it will be and is ok with that--he still achieves his goals of engagement, sales, etc. My own mental health could not stand that level of negativity--I'm more concerned about his reading all the criticism on here than reading speculation about his sex life (which I could personally laugh off).

I'm listening to Dan's latest podcast (Queerology) and I really like how he opens it up saying how much he doesn't like labels because sexual and gender are so complicated and he's the same with religion - when pressed he identifies as an agnostic atheist. Not many people ask them about spirituality or faith, and I didn't really expect it out of this one either, but I really identify with him talking about identifying his own meaning in the world and wanting to manifest positive impact.

Also: who the hell booked him on these podcasts oh my god?! While I appreciate that this one is a bit different, his book isn't about faith or religion, those aren't topics he's ever wanted to broach or address. Did he have any say in these choices? I'm guessing not.

The merch is.. fine. As usual his merch sounds very much like my cup of tea in theory and then I see it and I'm just.. nope. I like the t-shirt on the front cause it reminds me of the Have the courage to exist (which i do have and like) but I hate the back, it's so busy and confusing. The moon and sun logo is... cute (but I swear there's an identical looking design on canvas that I used literally 3 weeks ago so I'm curious about his design team tbh). I really read his tweet, saw the word sign and thought he was finally giving us something for Gemini season, but alas, it wasn't.
Will probably never be over the BONCAS and the beauty of Phil Lester.

Maybe they've been planned so he reaches different people to the norm, particularly older but also more males and more gay males?

At 30 as a gay man it must be a bit annoying to post a thirst trap on instagram and it's not other gay guys commenting on it and giving you attention, it's girls 10-15 years younger predominantly saying things like 'did phil take this'.

Which is nobody's fault, he was in the closet, girls often like gay guy's content, much like he and most of my male friends who are gay like female content like real housewives but yeah that's just my guess as to why he's on and why he's not promoting the podcasts very much on his own socials.

The merch was pretty much what I expected, it follows a similar style as he's done before as well as the branding for the book. Makes sense to me. I'm not too keen on the big text print but I got the tote because it promised to be sturdy and have pockets. I can always carry it with the cuter design outwards.

I enjoyed the latest podcast a lot, we don't hear him talk about faith or religion that much so it was interesting to hear what he thinks about it these days. The host also just seemed completely charmed by him (as with most interviewers this whole tour) and I find that delightful.

I just read the PinkNews article that was linked the the YoungMinds tweet that Dan liked (what a sentence) and I’m kind of confused by the marketing that has come up a couple of times recently about how it’s a book tackling masculinity and mental health for ‘queer and straight men alike’. I can understand it coming from GQ but the focus on men feels really strange coming from Pink News which is supposed to be for the LGBTQ+ population in general, especially when this makes it sounds as though the book revolves around the relationship mental health has with masculinity when in reality it’s such a small part of the book. Obviously young men are an important audience for mental health awareness but it still seems like a poor way for them to talk about it when this has the potential to make a significant portion of people who read the article think they aren’t the target audience of the book.

If you see something new happening in Dan and Phil land, please drop it here! There's no rule saying only certain people can post updates. I'm kind of sad no one is talking about Dan and Phil's gay tweets from yesterday or the new baby Dan pics or the comment Phil left on GMA.

And they both blessed us with some gayness for the first day of pride, and cute replies!

New Dan video going live on June 25, 9PM BST!
https://youtu.be/ifJYb2An7wE

Image

Description:
On June 25, Join Daniel Howell as he celebrates YouTube Pride 2021 by taking a journey through his past, and asks - what would have been different if Dan was proud? It's going to be an emotional and metaphorical rollercoaster with music, surprise guests and of course a lot of inappropriately self-deprecating humour. Most importantly, it will be a celebration of acceptance and everything Pride stands for.

It’s going to be a great party—and it’s all in support of The Trevor Project and AKT. Tune in June 25 at 9 PM BST / 1 PM PST, only on YouTube.

I'm incredibly impatient and want fresh Dan youtube content now.

Interviews about his book are lovely and all, but I feel like I've heard the same 5 thoughts a million times now. Is that terrible of me? Feel like I should appreciate what we have.

Also. Um. I miss Phil.

It's a good thing I have finals now to distract me from buzzing with energy about looming content, plus I will be completely free the weekend of phandom watch and I am reaDY.

I feel the same about the interviews, little bits and pieces are interesting and unique but overall I'm not that interested 'cause a lot of it is fairly repetitive. Which I don't really think is a bad thing, since it's not really content aimed at us (a core audience that hoovers up every second or word of anything that Dan is in). But it does make me hungry for more Dan, like fresh, not just book stuff Dan.

Also same. I miss Phil. I know he's probably been doing a lot with the house stuff and lying low while Dan does all his book things but damn it I miss him! I'm also immensely curious what sort of plans he has for the month, any pride related videos (more awkward stories from the closet? I'm a sucker for uni Phil stories at any rate), if he is going to change up his background at all with moving or keep it the same, I just want some Phil in my life.
